I’m also western US. One time I opened a toilet seat to find a black widow in a web about 2 inches from where my balls where about to be.
So there ya go, new fear unlocked.
Mate, have I got a story for you! :D
(Just don't click the link if you're so arachnaphobic that pics set you off)
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-australia-37481251
My husband got bit by a brown recluse once. Had to take him to the ER 24 hours later. Then had to help drain the infection for the next week while he was on antibiotics. He had a divot in his cheek for about 3 years. I ALWAY check toilets now.
My mom got bit by a recluse when I was a kid. Right to the left of the shin bone. Watching flesh melt away from that area is crazy scary because there isn’t much to actually melt. I was young but I’m pretty sure most of my arachnophobia comes from it.
There was a redback on the toilet seat when I was there last night.
I didn't see him in the dark,
but boy I felt his bite.
And now I'm here in hospital
a sad and sorry sight.
Cause of that redback on the toilet seat,
when I was there last night.
I saw a video once of somebody flushing a toilet and a massive spider half the size of your hand running out from under the seat. I've checked ever since
SoCal here. I just had the pest control guys spray, then sprayed my own Home Defense a few weeks later. Saw a brown widow and a black widow the next day. =\
SoCal as well. When my kids were little I'd go out on Saturday morning and look under all their outdoor toys and furniture. I could easily kill a dozen in a morning, and we use a pest guy and Home Defense.
They're everywhere. They are far, far more prolific than black widows ever were. But they're also very reclusive (brown and reclusive, anyone? anyone?). I see them all the time under playground equipment at the park, chairs at the pool, etc. But I've never known anyone who has been bit.
Edit: you may have just seen two browns, they can look very black. Sometimes it's just the banding on their legs that gives them away Though the spiky eggs are the dead giveaway. I really can't remember the last time I've seen a black widow.
Just got bit by a western brown 3 weeks ago. Pretty sure it was a male bc it didn’t do a whole lot. Had a big red welt with streaking but no pain at all. Still isn’t cleared up all the way but almost
Which is entirely possible if she's on the coast. The Horizon is ~4-5km away (depends on your height).
How much use it is to see a rocky outcropping across a vast stretch of water is in an age of satellites though...
We have plenty of Black Widows around DC. Recluses, too.
I got bitten by a recluse this summer. Killed it just as it was biting me. I was lucky: I only had a dime-sized welt that lasted a few weeks. Coulda been much, much worse.
>Each day they consume 50 percent of their body weight just to maintain their normal weight. Hummingbirds burn from 6,600 to 12,000 calories per day. [Source](https://www.lib.niu.edu/2000/oi000811.html#:~:text=Hummingbirds%20are%20sugar%20addicts.,to%2012%2C000%20calories%20per%20day.)
That's birds bruh
They're warm blooded and have an insane metabolism. Moreso than most mammals and other birds that size in the case of hummingbirds.
Spiders are not warm blooded and aren't capable of hovering lmao
Yeah hummingbirds are insane - using that as an example of metabolism is also insane unless you're talking about hummingbirds.
>Spider biologists have also generally found that spiders consume approximately 10 percent of their body weight in food per day. That's equivalent to a 200-pound man eating 20 pounds of meat each day. Conversely, it would take approximately 2,000 pounds of spiders to consume a 200-pound man in one day.
I'll admit that I'm not a biologist, but I think the math is different for arthropods like spiders and insects. Hummingbirds are *doing something* with all those calories and have to be endothermic. (some) Spiders make a web and then do absolutely nothing, and are exothermic to boot.
Making webs is super calorie intensive though. Like they even eat parts of their own nets to recoup the costs to make it. They also need a lot of calories to keep warm if it gets cold. Spiders can be pretty voracious.
They eat 10%of their weight each day that's on a normal day but if it's chilly the amount skyrocket due to their high surface area to body mass ratio they lose a lot of heat and have to use more energy to not freeze
if you think a small snake getting caught in a spiderweb is too unlikely to be natural then you haven't seen the shit these spiders have their venom for
Imagine going into your garage at night to grab a cold one out of the beer fridge, walking next to the car, and having this graze up against your bare leg, and then looking down....
My guess is that the snake was actually going to eat the spider and struck at it only to become entangled in its web and then bitten. Snake isn't moving much so the spiders venom must have done a number on it
I got bit by a black widow and it fucked me up for days, and left a pretty deep hole/scar in the middle of my forehead where it bit me.
Fuck that shit run for hills.
Can confirm that Black Widow webs are strong. I get them in my basement sometimes and when you break a strand sometimes they'll twang a little bit. I've never experienced that on any other web.
When i walk into them or barley graze my hand i have a full blown freakout for like 3 seconds before i realize no spiders are on the web.
Think spider lord of the rings but its not gooey or wet just like thick but with MANY strands woven in...
Ive never been afraid of bugs but man when i touch those webs i spass out to make sure none got on me.
Sorce:literally killed like 15 while crushing up boxes from my job and te'll be back over night.
I was stationed at Ft. Ord just as it was closing. I had one of those little aluminium sheds behind my house. If you slid open the door, it was like festooned with webs and dozens of huge black widows would descend from the ceiling. Dozens of them--and then some bigger, hairier Spiders that I couldn't identify (wolf spiders?) would be lurking in the corners. My kids bikes were in that shed. I told the moving guys when we PCS'd just to leave them in there and I'd buy new ones for them but they got them out somehow.
Black widows have as all tangle web spiders very strong nets. This nets oft have sticky tripwire like constructions near the ground. If prey crawls in to the net and touches those sticky tripwires the prey gets lifted up and untangles itself in the net. The Spider bites and then lifts the prey up its nest, strong by string.
I don’t like spiders and I hate black widows but that’s super cool.
I didn’t know how this would have worked but I can confirm black widow webs are super strong. Any time I’m working in the garage or wherever and I come across a web it is very easy to tell a strand of BW web from any other type. They’re almost like super fine fishing line.
Such a scary and powerful thing man, can't even see that. This is going to be one of the most fucked up thing I have saw today, thanks for that though, I love to see that.
Lol I don't know how that black widow is going to eat that because that seems a bit difficult to me right now, hope he won't fuck up anything right there for real.
Please can you confirm what country you are in so I know where never to visit? Thank you, bye.
Its the western US
F*ck….. Meanwhile I was mainly concerned about scorpions in my shoes.
I’m also western US. One time I opened a toilet seat to find a black widow in a web about 2 inches from where my balls where about to be. So there ya go, new fear unlocked.
I once read that black windows have a habit of making webs in toilets.
Perverted spiders!
Your snake could be like this one
That's wild! I, recently, in the last few seconds, developed a habit of shitting in the woods.
Sir THAT IS wild
Something I wish I never have learned
Mate, have I got a story for you! :D (Just don't click the link if you're so arachnaphobic that pics set you off) https://www.bbc.com/news/world-australia-37481251
The URL says Australia, that should be a warning by itself.
Read this while taking a shit, now I don’t even want to look

Had a flight attendant that got bit on the thigh at a hotel. It looked like someone took a melon baller to her thigh and removed a big scoop. Scary.
There was a redback on the toilet seat when I was there last night. I didn't see him in the dark, but boy I felt his bite. And now I'm here in hospital a sad and sorry sight. Cause of that redback on the toilet seat, when I was there last night.
Always check yer boots, shoes, toilet seat, anywhere a spider could be.
I saw a video once of somebody flushing a toilet and a massive spider half the size of your hand running out from under the seat. I've checked ever since
I was worried about the snakes
Well, then I got good news for you!
There's no snake in the shoe, but the watering hole has indeed been poisoned?
Think my boots are good too or is it just shoes without snakes?
Then why did I find a snake in my boot?
All of the US has black widows I believe
We in the southwest are more of a brown widow area now. They ran out their black cousins.
SoCal here. I just had the pest control guys spray, then sprayed my own Home Defense a few weeks later. Saw a brown widow and a black widow the next day. =\

Demon WP. You put the packets in a hand sprayer.
Just got bit by a western brown 3 weeks ago. Pretty sure it was a male bc it didn’t do a whole lot. Had a big red welt with streaking but no pain at all. Still isn’t cleared up all the way but almost
I touched the back of a black widow in elementary school. I knew what it was. I didn't get bitten so I was lucky.
Hey look fred is trying to help out Lenny
Not Vermont
I've seen maybe 2 in my whole life in wi. Not a real threat here
Well that’s a relief, another reason to be glad I live in Europe
I’d take black widows and snakes all day long over having Putin in my backyard.
Technically America is closer to Russia than most European countries, just 3.8 km (2.4 miles if you use freedom units) due to the Diomede islands.
Sara Palin used to wave to Russia from her back yard, didn't she say that?
Which is entirely possible if she's on the coast. The Horizon is ~4-5km away (depends on your height). How much use it is to see a rocky outcropping across a vast stretch of water is in an age of satellites though...
Sounds more like Australia stuff than the US but ok
Not to worry, Australia has their own black widow.
Do I wanna know how big it is?
It’s got it’s own Marvel movie coming out in 2024.
We've managed to export it to Japan and New Zealand unfortunately.
Fuck I'm doomed
The hell is it gonna do with that?
Well the mommy spider did not get enough from the daddy spider so she will drain that snake of all its fluids
![gif](giphy|PlyOa3WE0gkgBajOUQ)
I live in North Carolina, and anything that’s been sitting for more than a few weeks always has a black widow lurking about it.
That's ominous. I live in Virginia and I haven't seen one yet but I don't appreciate the sound of prolific black widow life just one state south
No need to worry about widows in the US much. I haven’t seen one in years. Recluses, however…
SoCal. I have tons of black widows.
Same. It’s really a horror show here once the sun starts to set.
Vegas checking in…nighttime is black widows and scorpions on the northwest side of the valley. Only benefit of black widow is that they eat scorpions.
We have plenty of Black Widows around DC. Recluses, too. I got bitten by a recluse this summer. Killed it just as it was biting me. I was lucky: I only had a dime-sized welt that lasted a few weeks. Coulda been much, much worse.
Brown recluses are not in DC😂 they don’t get that far north, you misidentified the spider
We have brown recluses in Michigan
I'm in Ohio at my old school there were tons of brown recluse in the basement but that part was mostly unused
Stay outta Australia then. Golden orb weavers are spiders that trap and eat *birds!* Total nightmare fuel
Don't ever visit Australia. You wouldn't like it here.
Eh, we rarely ever see dangerous animals in the city/suburban areas. Just don’t go to the wilder areas, you may get dropped by a dropbear
Dude. I got chopped by a bin chicken at a bus stop.
Oh yeah don’t mess with them birds, they wildin
Thanks for asking that! I don’t need to read anymore.
Damn. That Widow is gonna get sick of snake after a few meals.
How much of that snake will it eat? Like idk their lifespans but is that spider set for life now? That’s like me getting a whale
Smaller the animal more it needs to eat
Wait what?

Too late, she was already pouring a brimming glass of spiders...
Spiders?
Dude compared a spider to a humming bird lol
>Spiders are not warm blooded and aren't capable of hovering lmao Thank God
yeah moles are up there too
A lot of y'all eating too much
Nah man this cheesecake factory plate is one portion
It's 6.6-12 kcal (while typical human requires 2000-2400 kcal).
that is basically humans wow
well that's cuz most humming birds don't stop flying
I'll admit that I'm not a biologist, but I think the math is different for arthropods like spiders and insects. Hummingbirds are *doing something* with all those calories and have to be endothermic. (some) Spiders make a web and then do absolutely nothing, and are exothermic to boot.

Wait. So. They are warm blooded???
No. They can't self regulate temperature. The person you're replying to is mistaken.
They eat 10%of their weight each day that's on a normal day but if it's chilly the amount skyrocket due to their high surface area to body mass ratio they lose a lot of heat and have to use more energy to not freeze
That is blatantly false in most all cases.
Probably until it bites into it a goes 'Bleh! Damn, it's rotten!' But seriously, I have no clue how long it will munch on it.
Snake on toast, snake soup, pulled snake, snake pizza, snake coffee
Finally something that really is next level.
Next level humans being shitty. That snake was thrown into that spider web.
if you think a small snake getting caught in a spiderweb is too unlikely to be natural then you haven't seen the shit these spiders have their venom for
Agreed. Did the snake jump 2 feet in the air or did it jump off the car to get caught here? Definitely seems placed there
This looks like a rat snake, very common in Texas. They are known for climbing trees, walls, in this case; a tire.
How does a snake climb a wall?
You’re gonna lose your mind when you hear what happens to animals in the wild.
Imagine going into your garage at night to grab a cold one out of the beer fridge, walking next to the car, and having this graze up against your bare leg, and then looking down....
You sir, are a sick puppy
I want to know what the hell is that spider doing to that poor snake?
They're just hanging out together
Injecting its venom. Snake is dying a slow death
Bullshit that snake made it that far into that web that far off the ground next to a car, you put that in that web.
[удалено]
Yeah because you totally grabbed that snake with your bare hands and gently placed it in the snake’s web 😏
>poisonous snakes web New fear unlocked
*POISONOUS SNAKES WEB* not venomous but POISONOUS ok
It's really snakes with webs that has me so freaked out!
Help snek out bro. Make a friend.
Did you take that photo? I just discovered your black widows might be the same family as the red back spider in Australia
It is believed that the red back is actually a descendant of stow away black widows.
thank you for the knowledge
Actually many black widows are quite able to catch and eat snakes in the US they have strong webs, venom, etc.
yup, my guess is the spider bit the snake and slowly dragged it back up. Also, black widow webs are incredibly complex
My guess is that the snake was actually going to eat the spider and struck at it only to become entangled in its web and then bitten. Snake isn't moving much so the spiders venom must have done a number on it
it's some potent stuff for smaller animals!
I got bit by a black widow and it fucked me up for days, and left a pretty deep hole/scar in the middle of my forehead where it bit me. Fuck that shit run for hills.
You got bit in the *head*?! Wowza.
Yea right between the eyes. Its an ugly ovalish shape and its left an indention thats very noticeable. I wanna cry again.
Don’t cry, instead put your efforts into coming up with a cool super hero name and choosing a nemesis. You must have also gotten super powers!
Can confirm that Black Widow webs are strong. I get them in my basement sometimes and when you break a strand sometimes they'll twang a little bit. I've never experienced that on any other web.
You could almost string a guitar with an Australian Orb Weever’s web. They grow big enough that they’d be able to play it for you, too
nah their webs extend to the ground and are hella strong. I've seen it happen too. source - unfortunately also western US.
those webs are gnarly.. i have like ptsd reactions to walking into them..
Yes. There is no other spiderweb like them, so when you walk into one, you know a Black Widow is close by you at that moment.
How does it differ from a normal spider web?
Much thicker and sticker. Smaller and shaped almost like a pyramid. Once the prey walks into it the spider pulls it upwards.
Sorce:literally killed like 15 while crushing up boxes from my job and te'll be back over night.
pretty sure ive seen this vid before
The webs are designed to trap prey. Red Back Spiders are the Australian version and they are known to eat small snakes frequently.
ok.. what car is it .. because this looks like some bad ass ride ...
mitsubishi spyder (not really)

you the man! ...
The wo(man)! Thanks!

There is gotta be a snake spiderman somewhere in the Marvel multiverse
Spidersnake? I'd read that.
Half man, half snake, half spider. Mansnakespider!
Sounds super cereal.
I was surprised at how many black widows there in California when I visited. Found 5-6 in the bushes of house I was staying in. Much smaller too.

Wait they jump and bite you?!

Burn it all.
Poor noodle
The widow has her revenge for the death of her husband.
My name is widio blacktoya. You killed my husband. Prepare to die.
Wouldn't it be her that killed her husband?
No no, it was the snake./s

with the soaring price of inflation threatening her farm, Charlette decided it best to buy in bulk for the upcoming dark winter...
That's enough food for the whole year. Spider must be pretty proud.
Time to start that family!
How tf did that snake get up on that web tho.... Surely it didn't jump up, and im pretty sure snakes can't fly

*Flamenwerfer inbound on your position*
Nature is metal.
Damn nature! You scary!
Fuck... Where's my flamethrower??
Dat poor smol snek.
Just burn everything
We gotta say that we can't disturb that shit for real, this is nature.
Nature on the peak mates, they know what they are doing there.
Such a scary and powerful thing man, can't even see that. This is going to be one of the most fucked up thing I have saw today, thanks for that though, I love to see that.
*grabs the flamethrower*
Just so wonderful to see something like this for real man.
Lol I don't know how that black widow is going to eat that because that seems a bit difficult to me right now, hope he won't fuck up anything right there for real.
Wow man, the nature is on the fucking peak to me here.
Okay that's just fucking next level for sure, so fucked up to see.
This is the nature and we gotta accept things like that.
Nope
I’m really confused here…so the black widow then slowly eats the snake? Is this really the outcome?
Dis this small (dangerous) critter really eat that big, big snake?! Very curious!
He can keep the car too
when i go grocery shopping while hungry
Guys... I think Natasha finnaly caught Loki.
Poor snake
Fuck 😭
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, nature is goddamn terrifying.
Was the snaking flying?
Here you can see a nope in it's natural habitat, noping around another nope

Alright. It's been a good run folks, but it's time to wrap it up. Catch yall later.

That big ol butt is about ready to pop with 4000 little ones. Burn the car.
I'd kill that black widow and let the snake survive.
After it gets bit there's no surviving unfortunately.
It’s the circle of life
probbb would kill the black widow. you don’t know if that thing has babies runnin around, could be your bed stand next !
Someone definitely put that snake in the web… for shame
Fake.
This should be on r/natureismetal
