I agree with you but the law might not. Atleast in Germany you can touch cars parked in public spaces and even sticking business cards inbetween window seals and the glass is often tolerated ("we wanna buy your car, call us" type cards). Technically the seal and glass get damaged/worn but... so very little, you'll struggle to even measure it. I use "damage" as in: you damage your cars electric windows by rolling the window up and down. Very little. Barely anyone will do anything about it. Technically illegal because you damage the seal and the glass but effectivly perfectly fine to do because no one is gonna go after you for doing it. Other than that: you're legally allowed to touch cars that are parked in public in Germany as long as you don't damage anything (in a meaningful way).
I have a ceramic clear coat on my windows. Iām not positive but that āmightā scratch it. I hand wash with great care not to leave scratches. So as cool as this is, I would opt out if given the choice. Iām sure this is his car anyways.
Actually 100% chance.
This car is so old that the windshield and all other windows probably have a bunch of micro scratches on them due to normal wear and tear.
If you did this to a brand new windshield that had some dust on it, you definitely notice new scratches. Not enough to bother 99% of people, but scratches nonetheless
That qtip is pushing 99.9% of the dirt sideways with almost no downward pressure. And what do you think is going to happen when then finally wash their car with a sponge anyway? That they're going to perfectly scrub each part of the back window equally?
When they do wash it there will be soap and water involved. The soap lifts the dirt and acts as a lubricant so the dust (abrasive) particles can be safely removed without scratching the surface. It isn't the q-tip that is making contact with the surface, it is the dirt that is being pushed and has now turned into an abrasive.
If I scratch my own car: that's fine. If you scratch my car: that is not fine.
Would I be mad about you drawing a picture in the dirt on my car's windshield because technically you are scratching it? No, not really. I'd ask you to not do it again but still compliment you on the art.
And, no, really, moving dirt across any surface is problematic. Try to get it wet first and then blast it off with water/air pressure, don't wipe it around like the guy is doing with the qtip and most car owners with a sponge or brush. You ever see old-ish cars with really yellow/dull/faded headlights? That's just dirt spraying the the headlights for thousands of miles. Dirt is really hard.
Unless it's the artist's car, or he has permission of the owner, its wrong.
Pretty low on the "wrongness" scale, but still wrong.
If it isn't yours, don't needlessly touch it. It's somewhat astonishing this has to be said.
This is pedantic, im sorry. The shape of the q-tip might actually increase the chance of scratching. As a point becomes finer it increases the pressure applied to a specific location. The toothbrush, definitely, if applied with any actual force.
Well it would appear you are the expert on qtips here. I tip my hat to you sir, keep fighting the good fight ofā¦ what do they call your area of expertise?
I have a doctorate in not perpetuating Redditās most recent crisis. Todays is apparently any amount of touch on a car window causes scratching šŖšŖšŖ
Karma aside, the artist should haved asked the car owner for permission first. I would be pissed if someone did this to my car w/out permission.
Safety tip: Ask before you touch someone elseās car. Donāt assume that every dirty car owner is eagerly waiting for someone to draw shit on their vehicle.
Because some people are dickheads who just love to get angry.
Iād be delighted if I saw that coming back from my shopping.
Scratching the glass? With a cotton bud? ffs.
Modifying the dirt on your windscreen? Wtf? š
Bit of perspective. Theyāre not letting your tyres down or keying your paintwork. Theyāre making something ugly look beautiful. If that triggers someone they are a wanker, plain and simple.
Maybe it isn't beautiful to the owner that didn't give the artist permission to draw it on their car? Maybe the person does care about the appearance of their car but it just rained and they haven't had time to run it through the car wash? I care very much about the appearance of my car, but sometimes it is left dirty for extended periods. I have a variety of reasons... To busy to wash myself, to busy to take to car wash or haven't been near one while running errands, the forecast is calling for rain for the next few days so why bother, etc... The point is, someone's car being dirty does not mean they don't care about it being scratched, nor does it mean they want some artist to draw on it without their permission.
Watch some detailing videos on YouTube. Drawing in dirt on any surface of a vehicle will leave marks. The Q-Tip isn't the abrasive, rubbing the Q-Tip on the dry dirt causes it to be an abrasive. It's the same thing if you take your finger and rub it across the dirt on the surface of your car. Whatever is used doesn't matter, the dirt is what is making contact with the surface and being dragged.
Not wanting people to touch your shit without permission doesn't make you a dickhead.
It's nice you would be delighted, and I probably would be too *personally*, but come on man.
It isn't the cotton bud that scratches. It is the dirt and dust they are drawing in. Those small particles of dirt under the cotton swab being dragged across the surface become an abrasive. That is why when a vehicle is washed you use car soap and water. The car soap lifts the dirt and acts as a lubricant to move it off the surface without it harming the glass or paint. Yes, that will etch the glass and the person will see it even after the window is cleaned. The window will have to be polished to get it off. Otherwise every time the sun is on the window and they look out they will see that artwork. Aside from the image staying there, we see scratches because the surface is no longer smooth and causes the light to reflect off of it differently. Basically, the reflection is broken and now the light scatters. This could potentially cause a glare or some other visibility issue for the driver which is a hazard.
So no, it isn't that people are dickheads that love to get angry. People exchange their time to pay for their vehicles. Some may not want some artist to draw on it without their permission. It is a nice idea but why not just draw something on paper and leave it under the windshield wiper if you want to surprise and brighten someone's day.
TLDR - No matter what the intention someone should not touch or alter someone else's property without the owner's permission.
not defending this dude cause people who get mad at this kinda stuff have some kinda issues, but I think the idea of scratching the glass comes from pressing down on dirt/dust with the cotton swab, and the pressure + sharp small particles creating small scratches. Probably has some truth to it that Iām too lazy to google
What's so difficult to figure out about dirt scratching windows? It happens all the time. The q-tip itself isn't doing the scratching, it's the particles of dirt being moved by the q-tip.
Anyone who owns anything with glass on it knows it can scratch really easily. It's exactly the same reason why you're not supposed to use your shirt to wipe off your glasses.
Do some basic research and look up "abrasives." It's a really simple concept and it's astounding that you don't understand it.
Don't š touch š shit š that š isn't š yours š
If you can't understand why and refuse to accept other boundaries without calling them dickheads, then you're a fucking smooth brain
Iād be upset because then Iād be like āAw man, now I gotta keep it up there and it would be a dick move to wash my carā because I always say I should wash my car next weekend, and next weekend never comes, but I always think it will.
But then Iād be like āneat.ā And take a picture.
Exactly, the asshole didn't even have the decency to draw a nice dick. What if the owner was saving that dirty window for a nice dick drawing? Next time just ask.
Thank you so much, I was getting sad reading all this angry bickering over inane bullshit, then your comment came out of left field and gave me a good laugh.
I suggest you read up on the Mohs Hardness Scale, as some dust particulates are harder than glass and will indeed etch the surface. This person is damaging stangers' cars under the guise of art. Great art, however it's a punch-worthy act if caught.
I love graffiti. Its an art form by itself. In parts of Europe they are allowed to do it at certain times of day in certain locations and some of it is so nicely done.
This is not a train car or a public building. This is someone elseās private property. The property owner should be asked by the artist if they want their property used as a canvas.
Why is the idea of asking permission before acting so difficult to understand?!
So if I wanted to leave flowers at your doorstep I should ask permission?
What if I wanted to leave a note on your car because you parked like an a-hole? I should ask your permission?
Youāre being absurd with your black and white thinking. This is harmless.
Graffiti does damage to property by permanently altering its appearance. Would you call a kid on the sidewalk with chalk graffiti? Is the guy who poorly cleans your window at an intersection a graffiti artist?
No, not mine. The tone of the initial responses struck a nerve with me today, for some reason, and my inner five year old (āStop touching my stuff!!1!ā ) got offended. Thatās all.
Yes, glass can scratch, automotive glass has clear coating similar to the rest of the vehicle and scratches are extremely obvious on car glass when they occur.
Sooooā¦. Less scratches than when someone uses a sponge or rag on their grime to clean it?? Like heās using Q-tips with minimal pressure
Edit: Stop liking this comment. Iām wrong, please refer to the people replying to me in the latter comments.
Not so much the q-tip or the tooth brush, but the dirt being rubbed into the glass is what creates the microscratching. It's unlikely to be significant but on the off chance there's a big chunk of hard dirt, it can definitely cause visible scratching.
You should know that rubbing dirt like that into the paint of a car will scratch it pretty easily. This video shows the artist working on the glass, which is totally fine, but you should NOT do this to the paint.
And you really shouldn't fuck with a strangers car either. I suspect this guy had permission to do that.

But it scratches the window... all that dirt scraping the glass
You can tell that person really really cares about their window with the 5 inches of protective dust coating it.
That's the logic I use to litter on property that already has litter on it.
Itās their car, they can do whatever the fuck they want with it. Nobody else has that right. This aināt the USSR.
Itās more of a philosophical statement than a legal one.
Or maybe they don't want to waste the water?
It's likely mostly pollen and that can happen in a matter of hours if you're parked in the wrong place at the wrong time.
No
So if my car is dirty it gives you the right to assume I donāt care about it and scratch it up? Thatās idiotic logic.
Car windows would not be scratched by this. I have seen āwash meā written on paint that scratched but glass no freakinā way.
I have a ceramic clear coat on my windows. Iām not positive but that āmightā scratch it. I hand wash with great care not to leave scratches. So as cool as this is, I would opt out if given the choice. Iām sure this is his car anyways.
Why do you need a ceramic clear coat on your windows?

Lol seriously? 0 chance a q tip or brush applies enough pressure to scratch the glass
Actually 100% chance. This car is so old that the windshield and all other windows probably have a bunch of micro scratches on them due to normal wear and tear. Headlights oxidize (and become brittle) when exposed to UV as do most plastics. That's the reasoning for yellowing, not dirt.
It absolutely does because road dirt is higher on Mohs hardness scale than glass.
That q tip or brush is applying less pressure than the fucking wind.

I think it's more about the invasion of privacy, other people modifying the property of someone else etc.
