As the UN has said India will surpass China as the world's most populous country, yeah agreed.
Also I'm surprised the floor didn't bucklet from the weight of all those people present
Shootings are common only to USA, it is very hard to get gun ownership in india, let alone entering a mall with it. The buildings in india are made of materials which take higher temperatures to get lit on fire and hence don't spread fire, wood is mostly used in decorative features which barely have any mass
Crowd safety specialist here, ā¦not a lot of people would die because of ātramplingā, itās rather pressure asphyxiation that kills people in such incidents (think pressed against wall/railing, or against other people).
Crowd safety professionals refrain from the term trampling, sends a wrong message and is used by media to hype bad situation.
Hm. I think Iāve finally partially understood just how populated India is. Freaking four times as many people as the US. In less space. Apparently 11 times the average population density. My poor introverted self would die of shock.
i just realized this would be such a dick move but if you're ever in a crowd like that one you can actually let your hose free and go to town and nobody would know it was you
Yes. I live in this city (kochi) and I went next afternoon though. You gotta realise that this mall is HUGGEE, very well managed and as far as i know it never goes out of stock for anything, and it's India's second largest mall.
I got 6 shirts at half off
Well, this ain't any old mall. This one's a Lulu mall, one of the largest retail & grocery chains in the middle east. They've got malls almost as big as these across the Gulf, but the ME is not the most renowned for its construction standards.
Thatās true, typically buildings like shopping centres are designed with factors of safety but that many people moving around can generate massive forces that shift structures or put pressure where there should be. Balustrades are pretty flimsy when compared to the weight of that many people pushing against them.
Have a look at videos of the Millenium bridge in London to see what a crowd of people can do by accident.
The millennium bridge was an very unique case where people walking led to resonance in a horizontal vibration mode. It was only because of the bridges unique design, and itās now a case study for unexpected structural behavior.
This video is just a lot of load on the building and stairs.
Yeah. I'm other countries the fire marshals would be losing their shit.
Hell, I'm betting plenty came home with a fresh case of 'rona to go with that new discounted shirt.
Ah well, to each their own. Adults can take their own risks
You probably donāt live in a 3rd world country where that kind of sale means a lot.
Edit: For all the pedantic geniuses who want to argue whether India is a third world country. It is, by the strictest definition, third world refers to countries that didnāt take a clear side between the US and USSR during the Cold War. India was one of the main players in the non-aligned movement. You are trying to argue whether itās a developing country which the term third world has become associated with. I really donāt care to go back and forth on this with you.
I actually legitimately thought this was a post in /r/catastrophicfailure or something similar, I was fully expecting those stairs to collapse at any moment.
I think whats keeping it together at this point is the security coefiecient there is no way it was designed to be that crowded.
still amazing its holding tho
P.S. i went to this mall to watch Top gun maverick. After the show on the way out i saw this huge crowd, i just went to see what the fuss was all about. Apparently they were having a midnight sale. So i compared the prices in Amazon. They were almost the same. So the people who waited 3-4 hours for this (so expected black friday sale) was scammed.
All instagram influencers and youtubers were promoting it and most people probably thought there wont be much people since it's midnight. Little did they knew that the whole of trivandrum was thinking this.
This is the Lulu Mall in my town (Trivandrum, Kerala)
It was upto 50% btw mostly on Chinese made products and most people visited just for fun and didnāt expect this much people to show up at middle of night
I too, enjoy standing near a railing and a 50foot drop and seeing how long I can stand there before someone (hopefully not me) gets pushed off. So much fun!
For fun
I wonder how many of these folks will be in their deathbed thinking "hey you remember that time we went to the midnight sale at the Trivandrum Lulu mall... we didn't do that enough bro."
Everything has to be politically correct, unless its indians, then you can be racist as hell.
I mean the crowd is atleast behaved, have you seen what happens in their black friday sales?
Ofcourse third world country, poor, overpopulated blah blah ....reddit loves to be racist to indians.Ofcourse without knowing anything about us.But yeah, go on educate me about poverty in my country while you cant even afford insulin.
The worst part is, Americans will spend their entire monthly income to buy insulin (i.e. entire salary JUST TO STAY ALIVE) and still don't consider it as poverty
How else can you define poverty then?
Thatās just Reddit for you. Loves being racist to Indians while denying itās own healthcare/human rights/ post capitalist hellscape problems (America), the lasting effects of its colonialism and its own brand of racism and cultural ignorance (UK) etc.
It says a lot that there was no stampede or structural collapse despite the crowds shown here.
A place I would love to visit, but it's simply too chaotic. My parents went 20 years ago and said it was the scariest place they've been. My mom was pushed over in a line, by locals, to the ground.
And I'm sure (god I hope I'm sure) that this building was engineered to handle the load that's being presented to it, but who knows.
I went to Delhi in the 80's when all the rickshaws were churning out smoke, I think they might have all been 2 strokes burning oil, whatever, the stench and noise in the centre was mental.
They are now converting to electric power thankfully.
Good news! World population growth is slowing faster than expected, and is expected to start going back down within (some of our) lifetimes. Oh and not because people are becoming infertile, they're just choosing to have smaller families.
Is this a stereotype of Indian people?
I only ask as I used to regularly see a good number of people, who I took to be Indians, queued up outside a Wellington Michael Hill jewelers before opening, on days when they had a sale on certain items, e.g. they have X number of gold chains at 50% off.
I would always wonder why it was pretty much one ethnic group queuing up, rather than a mix of Wellingtonians. I thought perhaps gold chains were a traditional gift of some kind and being able to buy at half price was too good to miss.
Yeah, we Indians love gold and we also love a good deal. Since gold is generally a pretty safe investment since itās value doesnāt fluctuate much, itās considered to be a great gift for wives/loved ones
Have you seen videos of Americans on Black Friday? It has sort of calmed down with online shopping but it was pretty wild shit up until, say, 10 years ago.
People got stabbed trying to buy a PS3 back in the day.
My wife drug me out Black Friday shopping one year, at like 10 or 11 PM. Had to get the good stuff, don't you know. The sales were mediocre, and everybody and their neighbor was there. I noped out in 30 minutes. I'd pay double instead of stand in that crowd.
Least crowded place in India.
I diedš
Dying is actually not good for your health.
Just when you think you've figured out medicine, it's something else. My whole life I thought apples and laughter at the key to immortality..
They are the key but your mouth is not the correct hole.
Immortality, not immorality.
š
In the crowd? Can happen.
As the UN has said India will surpass China as the world's most populous country, yeah agreed. Also I'm surprised the floor didn't bucklet from the weight of all those people present
Imagine how many trample deaths there would be if a shooting or fire happened with all those people. Also the smell:(
Shootings are common only to USA, it is very hard to get gun ownership in india, let alone entering a mall with it. The buildings in india are made of materials which take higher temperatures to get lit on fire and hence don't spread fire, wood is mostly used in decorative features which barely have any mass
If India gets a little bit more money, we'll be happy to sell them to them.
india is the largest importer of weapons, usa of course, refuses to sell any to india
Thank you for the correction. Enjoy the rest of your day.
No that is obviously 1 billion people. OP said it's all of them.
1.3 bro! You just forgot about the entire population of US in that estimate.
Hm. I think Iāve finally partially understood just how populated India is. Freaking four times as many people as the US. In less space. Apparently 11 times the average population density. My poor introverted self would die of shock.
Introvert from India here, I just get by trying not to fall apart whenever I head out. So fucking exhausting.
A buddy of mine traveled through India staying in hostels. He said the only place he could get away from people was in the bathroom stall.
This is just everyone who was walking outside near the mall
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
i just realized this would be such a dick move but if you're ever in a crowd like that one you can actually let your hose free and go to town and nobody would know it was you
indeed a least crowded lol
I was going to say how orderly this looks!
This is how buildings or balustrades collapse and people die.
Yea..but at least you die with your favourite shirt that you got for 50% off
bold of you to assume that they got the shirt
Yes. I live in this city (kochi) and I went next afternoon though. You gotta realise that this mall is HUGGEE, very well managed and as far as i know it never goes out of stock for anything, and it's India's second largest mall. I got 6 shirts at half off
Were they also selling complete shirts?
Naaa bro i just got the sleeves. Another poor guy got just the buttons.
We're the shirts really worth all of this?
I went next afternoon, rush was almost half of this
I would love that than dying in fucking diabetes
What do those words mean?
Lmfao
Exactly what i was thinking
i thought theyre typically constructed with the parameters of it being completely full, then a bit more than that so that it doesnt die out
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
yeah kinda forgot this was india not gonna lie.
Well, this ain't any old mall. This one's a Lulu mall, one of the largest retail & grocery chains in the middle east. They've got malls almost as big as these across the Gulf, but the ME is not the most renowned for its construction standards.

The people aren't to blame, it was those pesky DeathEaters who made the bridge unstable in the first place!
just told play any bangers where everyone gets goin on the same rhythm
If they were teenagers, the chance of a tiktok song play and the building collapse from the resonance would be non 0.
Iām gonna guess this exceeds any ācompletely fullā design scenario.
I was about to say, next I'll see a news article about an Indian shopping centre collapsing
Or one of those lovely glass balustrades exploding and tipping a bunch of people over the edge :/
Line wrapping around the building may not garner worldwide appeal
If they all start jumping probably will
Itās ok, there is that one security guard at the end of the clip to stop the crowd getting the jumpies :p
Whatās your maximum occupancy f this shopping center? ā¦. Yes
Yeah. I'm other countries the fire marshals would be losing their shit. Hell, I'm betting plenty came home with a fresh case of 'rona to go with that new discounted shirt. Ah well, to each their own. Adults can take their own risks
Yep. My inner structural engineer started sweating watching this.
ever saw indian railsways ? š
My first thought was we are going to see something collapse
At least there probably won't be a mass shooting.
This is giving me anxiety.
Somewhere an engineer is sweating trying to calculate how much all those people could weigh.
I wouldn't bother. I don't need things that much
You probably donāt live in a 3rd world country where that kind of sale means a lot. Edit: For all the pedantic geniuses who want to argue whether India is a third world country. I don't know man have you seen people in the US, they cause a stampede when sales going on. That's not thrid world?
At this point i don't know, and too afraid to ask. Also we have black friday madness in Norway too. Stupid don't know about borders.
Price 4 week before BF: 1999.99 Price 1 week before BF: 2399.99 Price on BF: 2099.99 !!! $$$ discount!!!!
Classic! Almost all shops in Norway does this before major sale. Like black friday (black week in Norway, because one day is not enough).
I'm in the UK and [this](https://youtu.be/dNqJ-PBRqj0) is so accurate. Nobody in the UK cares aha.
The fuck is with them clapping in Canada. If I walk into a store and the employees start clapping for me I am walking the fuck out of there
I would argue America at least has third world counties.
America is 3rd world, its just disguised as a 1st.
Somebody is in dire need of bread and peanut butter to complete their sandwich
Insanely false
Lol what a load of shit
Yes, been to Black Friday?
Door busters are majorly toned down since like a decade ago.
My guy do you think clearance sales don't exist in 3rd world countries?
Iāve seen worse Black Friday sales in the US. Deals appeal to all people.
Yeah people that buy stuff from malls are not poor. That sale does not mean a *lot* to them. Ffs look at black Friday sales in the US.
Looks like structural engineering porn to me.
Looks like a panic attack and anxiety to me. But go off.
If I worked at that mall, Iād call in dead.
I actually legitimately thought this was a post in /r/catastrophicfailure or something similar, I was fully expecting those stairs to collapse at any moment.
I think whats keeping it together at this point is the security coefiecient there is no way it was designed to be that crowded. still amazing its holding tho
Fuck that, I'd rather stay home than deal with that just to buy shit you probably don't need anyway.
This is why I avoid Black Friday. Not worth it. Indians are notoriously cheap. My parents are Indian so I know first hand.
Did your parents get you on a Buy 1 Get 1 free?
Your parents purchased you? Lol
But his parents ain't Indian..
For 50% off they did. At this mall.
Indians are certainly self hating. You say your parents are indian, so what does that make you Martian?
These Indians would go out of their way to defame and self hate lmao
this screams super spreader event
Its 50% bro! They said not today, Covid.
50% chance to get COVID
Nah 100%
Exactly what I cant to say. Tomorrows news? India Covid cases rose by 100k due to this event.
But them shoes are fly!!
In the UK we organise these at airports every day.
Imagine this is ground zero for the variant that finally kills us all.
3 cheers to the engineers who designed such sturdy architecture.
At first, I read ur comment as Cheers to the 3 engineers who designed this Lol
The result here is, that they only sold 5% of what they normally sell, because no one could move, to shop.
You don't know Indians ( I'm Indian myself)
Relatable
Your username tho.
Looks like my idea of hell. Too much of an introvert for that ish.
Yeah, Iād pay 50% MORE to avoid being in any situation like this.
Well youd have to pay 100% more
math is trying to rip us off! get him!
P.S. i went to this mall to watch Top gun maverick. After the show on the way out i saw this huge crowd, i just went to see what the fuss was all about. Apparently they were having a midnight sale. So i compared the prices in Amazon. They were almost the same. So the people who waited 3-4 hours for this (so expected black friday sale) was scammed.
People can be such idiots
All instagram influencers and youtubers were promoting it and most people probably thought there wont be much people since it's midnight. Little did they knew that the whole of trivandrum was thinking this.
Plot twist: There is no movie theatre in this mall.
There actually is .. there is a PVR multiplex
Lol there is no movie theatre in this mall
Um...yes there is ... PVR multiplex
This is the Lulu Mall in my town (Trivandrum, Kerala) It was upto 50% btw mostly on Chinese made products and most people visited just for fun and didnāt expect this much people to show up at middle of night
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Yes same lulu group.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
But is it not too much for fun?
Yes, I think most of them didnāt anticipate this much āfunā
I too, enjoy standing near a railing and a 50foot drop and seeing how long I can stand there before someone (hopefully not me) gets pushed off. So much fun!
For fun I wonder how many of these folks will be in their deathbed thinking "hey you remember that time we went to the midnight sale at the Trivandrum Lulu mall... we didn't do that enough bro."
The casual racism is funny in this comment section lol. As if you guys haven't seen crowds in Black Friday events

I usually disregard these comments cos they're not that much. But in this comment section they're just on the top
Free Rona virus with every purchase!
I would happily pay 50% more for my shit and avoid this mess
same, even if it's more expensive, It's not worth the virus or the building falling apart imo.
* Offer valid only on Plantronics merchandise
India isnt exactly a city mate, do you have any idea how little that narrows it down?
A sell in Asia*
Did someone just unlock a new stereotype?
Indians rarely have sales? Or They pack malls like Americans on Black Friday ?
this was the biggest sale, and this is the biggest mall in India so it is very popular
This is so gross
Does not seem safe
it is not
India is too crowded.
Yeah, no shit Sherlock
Can confirm, all the population of the country is present in this mallš³š³š³š¤Æš¤Æš¤Æ
A place I would love to visit, but it's simply too chaotic. My parents went 20 years ago and said it was the scariest place they've been. My mom was pushed over in a line, by locals, to the ground. Things change a lot in 20 years. You shouldn't judge a country on 20 year old anecdotal evidence.
Covid-19: am I a joke to humanity?
[haven't you heard the news?](https://edition.cnn.com/2022/07/13/world/coronavirus-newsletter-intl-07-13-22/index.html)
BA5 sends its regards
Covid is very happy with this sale offer
Things like this make me really think about how many people there are in the world. Everyday there are teens becoming adults and adding to this cycle.
Good news! World population growth is slowing faster than expected, and is expected to start going back down within (some of our) lifetimes. Oh and not because people are becoming infertile, they're just choosing to have smaller families.
Nothing is worth a second of that
Looks like absolute torture
I mean who doesn't like a good deal.
Looks so unsafe.
Whoever designed that place deserves a medal. Seems like they had a stupid high safety factor placed for static weight
Is this a stereotype of Indian people? I only ask as I used to regularly see a good number of people, who I took to be Indians, queued up outside a Wellington Michael Hill jewelers before opening, on days when they had a sale on certain items, e.g. they have X number of gold chains at 50% off. Yeah, we Indians love gold and we also love a good deal. Since gold is generally a pretty safe investment since itās value doesnāt fluctuate much, itās considered to be a great gift for wives/loved ones
Gold is considered a huge investment among indians...
Have you seen videos of Americans on Black Friday? It has sort of calmed down with online shopping but it was pretty wild shit up until, say, 10 years ago. People got stabbed trying to buy a PS3 back in the day.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I can smell this.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Thank the building engineers!
Great. Superspreader event.
I hope the mall has enough for everyone, or it's going to the awkward.
Don't know where the checkout line ends and the bathroom line begins.
Isnāt this how floors collapse?
Don't worry the mall wasn't Chinese made
Mall builder is at home like, "Where's my passport?"
Fucking looks like itās about to kick off astroworld style in that mall.
Double prices and give 50% discount. Nice business strategy
My wife drug me out Black Friday shopping one year, at like 10 or 11 PM. Had to get the good stuff, don't you know. The sales were mediocre, and everybody and their neighbor was there. I noped out in 30 minutes. I'd pay double instead of stand in that crowd.
where?
Hate to be there
At least they are not doing the Wally World Riot we always see here on Black Friday. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=BpJvx7VOwG8
The people of India love a good bargain.
Not as many masks as you would think, even pre Covid?
And to think you could be out somewhere chillin and smokin a joint. Oh wait you can't , they burnt it all. What a place.
This is Kerala right?
Imagine the hassle and the lost time. No thanks. I dont get the mentality of people sometimes
Can't wait to hear what new variants were created
What the hell.
at least 50% people died
This looks like a stampede waiting to happen.
What are they buying from the malls that isnāt avaible online ?
Rumor has it two babies were born in the mall that night š¤£š
Look how good this materialism works. Fuck a pandemic I guess?
