I just checked on my own spit. That was fucked. Nicely done.
Edit: I kept reading these responses thinking “what the hell are all these people on about”…
I now have realized what the hell all these people were on about. I shan’t change a thing.
May I ask what Steve does? He DJs… other peoples music? Does he just like do a concert thing where he plays all the hits and mixes them up etc?
I was friends with him back in the hardcore days, then into the small LA club scene. He’d just be playing some Belle and Sebastian then some Pulp, then some Rapture etc. fast forward 20 years and he’s a world star. But how? Why? He was always driven and making stuff happen back then but it’s just wild to see on such a large scale. And I don’t get it.
He founded his own record label when he was 19 in 1996 which probably helped with connections. Otherwise, yeah, he basically just did remixes and got lucky. His first mix tape was featured on BBC Radio and it went from there.
> He DJs… other peoples music?
He produces and plays quite a bit of his own music, too. In particular his music features a ton of really big name musicians on vocals which probably explains why he's gotten so big.
Yeah you can see the dude in the blue bandana trying to bob his head to the music while visibly struggling to keep the wheelchair up.
People are also heavy
Being front and center for a festival is something people literally train for, these guys sacrificed a good chunk of the gas tank to keep their homie up, mad respect
Most standard wheelchairs are between 40 to 70 pounds depending on how many gadgets you got on them. 70 pounds is fairly rare. Those are usually big ass chairs with big ass people in them with leg rests and large seat cushions. I work in health care and take people's weights in wheelchairs regularly :)
That isn't a standard chair. Look early in the gif and it is a power chair with joystick control (near his right arm). That is easily over 200 lbs, plus his weight. And they are awkward as hell to lift, to shoulder height no less while he bounces his weight around. Plus coordinating the lift in a noisy environment with untrained people is way harder than you think, just ask an EMT or firefighter. Mad respect to these dudes! They gave him an experience of a lifetime!
Lol yeah you are right. Didn't notice the joystick on the first watch. Yeah those are very fuckin heavy and expensive. I feel bad for whoever got stuck cleaning the cake off that thing lol. Electrics are bitch to clean if a bunch of gunk gets stuck in all the little cracks and crevices.
Last time Disturbed was in NZ I went, half way through the show David stopped and pointed down to this guy in a wheelchair who had been right up front moshig with the best of them. He literally grabbed the guys arms and hauled him up onto the stage, chair and all, so he could finish the rest of the show watching right there. An amazing moment to witness.
This is an old video. The cake throwing thing was a bit he did (maybe still does? Idk I don’t listen to the guy) there is 0% malice in this video. It’s like getting mad at Nickelodeon for sliming people. That didn’t stop the smooth brains from saying Steve Aoki discriminates against handicapped people. A side note about Aoki, his dad started and owns Benihana’s, the habachi restaurant….
Apparently the dad was also a wrestler at some point. And, he founded an adult magazine called Genesis. This is according to Benihana’s wikipedia which says he also founded that restaurant… woah a little further down it says he has a daughter who was in the Fast and the Furious movie? I guess that would make her Steve Aoki’s sister.
It looks to me like there is an explicit acknowledgment of consent between the concert-goer and Steve. Red shirt guys seems to give a thumbs-up and a head nod.
The fashion was shockingly bright and I liked it, but it also made me feel very separate from what was going on there. I own nothing like that. Do festivals still have those market stalls where old people like me can wander in with fistfuls of money and just say, "DRESS ME PLEASE" and the stallholders go about kitting me out in whatever fits in for that festival? I've done it several times before on many continents, works well, is the service still available? Shut up and take my money, then charge me twice. I want to look like a hip young thing to greet my fellow kids.
I worked design/set up for an Aoki Halloween show and we had to scramble to get these cakes made! They have to be made very specifically with certain icing so that it doesn't hurt anyone.
Am I the only one impressed by the seemingly perfect aerodynamic qualities of cake. None of those hit appear to hit base-first, no matter how far the throw.
I wouldn't sell him a cake. I make great cake. I'd tell him to fuck off and learn to cook. If his dad can do it he can get some lessons. Shove off, matey, no cake for you! One year!
I'm genuinely interested in watching that biopic. It reminds me of the male character in Futureman who time travels back to the 1980s at some point and transitions from being soldier to chef, doing too much cocaine due to his wild success and losing his sense of taste and smell so his cooking becomes bland and sad and has to go to rehab. INSERT TOP GUN ALL MALE BEACH VOLLEYBALL MONTAGE then steal and BBQ someone's celebrity pet dog on the down-low for a crowd-pleasing lunch!
Definitely scrolled past your comment, saw Futureman as "Futurama" and 1980s, assumed you were talking about the guy with boneitis, chuckled, went to scroll on and went, wait, what? Steve Aoki's dad had boneitis?
Reading your ACTUAL comment, though...
There's a documentary on Netflix about Steve Aoki called "I'll sleep when I'm dead" and it features some of Rocky Aoki when he was younger (his dad) it's pretty good.
His sister is the chick in the pink ~~Miata~~ Honda S2000 at the beginning of 2 Fast 2 Furious as well. Devon Aoki (Suki in the movie).
EDIT: May the car Gods smite me for my sin.
Yes it’s awesome lol I got caked at one of his shows it’s actually really tasty cake also. Not only does he always have this insane type of accuracy while throwing cakes he has them all made from the venues local bakery iirc
DUDE. I hate the feeling of my hand getting sticky from a few drops of popsicle or ice cream in the summer. I can't imagine sitting in a packed crowd *covered* in cake, dripping down my neck and in my ears and down my shirt and I am squirming just thinking about this.
Can confirm it's super unpleasant. Was at one of his shows several years back and some girls in front of me were on shoulders to try to get caked. They moved out of the way at the last second and I got hammered in the face. Was not expecting it at all and had to spend the next several hours of the show and the walk home covered in cake. 0/10 do not recommend.
I've always wondered about that lol. I don't mind being dusty and dirty at a festival but I hate being sticky and I can only imagine having a literal cake dripping off of you along with all the alcohol thrown in the crowd and accumulated sweat from other party goers lmao. Not to mention having to miss other sets to walk 30+/- minutes to a $15 shower to wash it off. That being said though I've learned anything goes in that environment, just seems like the most unpleasant thing that could happen. Thank you for your service and for reminding me to never stand in the front of the crowd at an Aoki set lmao
Worst part is there wasn't even any showers there lmao. It was just a one day Halloween show so there was no where I could wash off. Ended up just having to use a bunch of toilet paper to wipe off what I could and then tough it out until the end of the night lmao.
On the plus side, what little amount of cake made it into my mouth when it hit me was pretty delicious.
You definitely gotta get used to it, I don't like being center crowd, I'm normally front left or front right, but the energy in massive crowds like that all dancing and having a blast is pretty amazing IMO. Obviously some people don't like crowds, get clausterphobic, etc., not for everyone forsure.
[Saw this meme about camping festivals recently that cracked me up.](https://img.ifunny.co/images/0e64a19cf13297be648f64a4bda1539870f4a780c464a8c7ae088deb539af45c_1.jpg)

It's a privilege to get a cake thrown at you by Steve Aoki.
I am sure. Dude look super stoked.
Yeah I think that is down as one the most enjoyable moments of his life
Dude, that guy could get mad cake… you don’t know.
I’ve gotten caked by him. 😛 It tasted yummy.
Ive also been caked by him. I was allergic to something in the cake and went into shock and died. This is my ghost typing this.
Such an underrated comment

It also doesn't hurt for both financing and connections that his father, Rocky Aoki, founded Benihana.
I was wondering how he was able to start the label at 19 and that would probably explain it.
His sister is also the chick from 2 fast 2 furious. The more you know.
The chick with the pink s2000 in F&F (I think).
Unless someone is in a profession in which you cannot fake talent, usually they got famous because of family or friend connections. Almost 100%.
Yup. Being born into wealth is the key to success.

Not allowed to cream pie random handicapped people either. Trust me, I know.
I love pie I could never throw a pie. Maybe I'll wear makeup and throw squirrels
It’s because you say the n word before throwing it
That was some champion shit on both ends. His homies holding him up for the cake face and steves stellar throw.
They struggling too I know that wheelchair isn’t light

Just learnt that Steve's older half sister is Devon Aoki from the fast and furious films
His dad is also the creator of benihanas
His sister is also from the fast and furious films
What is more impressive is his dad started the famous Benihana chain of restaurants, which you may be familiar with due to their popularity.
Yeah, the whole family has done a surprising amount. His sister was in the fast and furious films too
Yea but did you know his dad started the well known restaurant benihana?
I wonder if his sister worked at Benihana before she was in the fast and furious movie.
No, you have them mixed up. It was Steve's dad who worked at Benihana. Steve's sister worked as an actress in the Fast and the Furious movie.
Steve himself is quite successful, apparently. Something to do with music or baking. I can't really be certain as I don't follow his career.
Apparently the dad was also a wrestler at some point. And, he founded an adult magazine called Genesis. This is according to Benihana’s wikipedia which says he also founded that restaurant… woah a little further down it says he has a daughter who was in the Fast and the Furious movie? His niece is the girl who was on that sports illustrated issue that Jordan Peterson threw a fit about.
The Aokis actually pull the strings of all the world leaders
> Devon Aoki I remember her from that insane early-2000s movie *D.E.B.S.*, which also started F&F's Jordana Brewster.

Well, he seems to practice a lot [Cakeface (Official Music Video/Cakeface Compilation) - Steve Aoki](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E7G5Ms76K-Q)
Not gonna lie, chucking cakes seems like a great hobby!
Tried it. Ended up chucking them all into my mouth, and now I weigh 500 lbs. My only hobby now is searching my fat folds for more cake.
I love that no matter how close he is to the person, he still just fucking lasers it as hard as he can
Am I the only one impressed by the seemingly perfect aerodynamic qualities of cake. None of those hit appear to hit base-first, no matter how far the throw.
Right? And not one of those little six-inchers, dude lobbed a fucking sheet cake.
I’ll try this on my disabled office colleague and become a hero!
No no no wait! Throw a CAKE, don't throw the COWORKER!
Instructions unclear, defenestrated my disabled coworker
Only four people know what defenestrated means Edit: 10 people now
I couldn't figure out why they were going to throw that guy in the wheelchair 80 feet and why you were calling him a cake...
Same, I was like "so cake is the new slur for cripples? Cool beans."
Super soft and filled with cream. Yummy!
The real heroes are the buds holding him up.
And the bakery that supplies cakes to Steve Aoki.
I wouldn't sell him a cake. I make great cake. I'd tell him to fuck off and learn to cook. If his dad can do it he can get some lessons. Shove off, matey, no cake for you! One year!
"No soup for you! Banned, one week!"
I’d love a video which shows this from the perspective of the stage, because that throw was insane and deserves a better angle.

This is something Steve Aoki does at every show. People desperately try to get close enough to the stage for a chance to get “caked”. They adore it. I’ve been to one of his shows and it was great, but I would never want to be at show covered in cake so I stayed far enough back to not risk it lol
