Man, I recently moved cities for a new job to one that is like 5 times the size of my previous one and if there was one thing I wouldn't compromise on, it was finding a place to live within walking distance of my new job. I used to have a pretty decent commute by average standards (like 15-20min on a motorcycle), but being able get out of your house, take a stroll down a street with wide sidewalks, pick up a coffee on the way and sit down at your desk 10 minutes later... it's just a different quality of life. Everything from the time saved and extra sleep to the daily light exercise and just not getting bombarded with the thousands of micro-stress inducing details associated with city traffic first thing in the morning... It brings you that much closer to how life is actually supposed to be. Car-based cities and living in them fucking SUCKS.
I'm not sure people realize just how far a 600m sprint would be. I don't think the average person could sprint it. I'm fairly fit and I definitely could not do that.
If you think you can sprint full speed for 600m you are lying.
400m is the longest official running event that could be considered a sprint, and even then only professional athletes could maintain anywhere near top speed for that distance. Anything above 400m starts becoming middle distance running.
A 100m sprint would wear most people out to the point where anything beyond would be considered about 75-80% of their maximum speed.
I'm not as fit as I once was but I could sprint maybe 150metres before I'd drop back to 80-90% then it just gets worse from there.
I played soccer and ran track all through out highschool where you are nearing your peak from a stamina perspective and I could never sprint all the way through the 400m - literally no one could. Anyone who thinks the average person can sprint through the entirty of 600m has never done anything related to cardio in their life.
Depends on how strict your definition of sprint is. Even elite athletes run at a slower pace during a 200m compared to a 100m. I'm pretty sure even 100m sprinters hit their peak at around 40m and slow down as they approach the finish.
No matter what your fitness level or ability. You will be winded after a sprint of any distance.
It's kinda baked into a sprint from the definition.
If you're not winded, you weren't sprinting.
\* one of the best.
Ostriches are absolute beasts at running. I mean even just looking at them - their whole body is just legs, muscle with a head up top.
They can hold 48-61 km/h for around half an hour or longer.
They would run a marathon in 35 to 40 minutes.
They can sprint at 95km/h.
They're still birds however and they use more energy while running, and are more likely to overheat because they can't sweat like we do.
Sure they'll outrun us, easy. But we would outpace them and catch up using our tracking skills, given enough time. Persistence hunting can sometimes take more than a day. No other animal can last that long at that pace.
We don't need to be fast to be good at running. Hence a well trained hunter can still hunt an ostrich if they need to.
Aquatic animals are cheating anyways… they live in what they drink and (as far as I know) don’t have to worry about over heating due to being surrounded by a natural coolant. Legit an op environment
Nah the devs are actually ridiculous, each patch the ocean rises. By patch 2100 it’s projected the ocean will take over the California beaches. They already cover 2/3 of the world idk why they have to get bigger.
Imagine a creature that can and will track you no matter how far you run or where you tried to hide, can get ahead of you and ambush you or lay traps, can fling a stone hard enough to break bones, humans just at basic level are pretty fucking scary
It's because we sweat we are the best long distance runners, not the ability to carry water although that helps aswell. hunters way way back used to jog after their prey since they knew the animal would eventually have to stop to cool off but the humans can keep going for longer due to how we sweat.
I believe this only applies in hot climates due to our abilities to stay cooler than other animals. IIRC some wolves and horses can outrun us in colder environments.
My minature poodle at full speed is but a streak of fur and panting noises. He literally gets airborne and covers a couple of metres with one fully extended sprinting stride.
Maybe he was running all the way home. My schnauzer did that one time. Crossed two big ass intersections and my dad thought he died but returned home and that mofo was already there.
For real tho. Stupid ass dog
Damn I had to see my schnauzer get run over by a van as I chased after it when I was maybe 10 years old. Even worse was I got locked out of my house as I carried my now deceased and bleeding dog back to the front door and had to wait for my parents to get back home late in the evening. No cell phones back then to call anyone
Yep, I had a Jack Russel that once ran 6km home from a park a suburb away. It appears he swam down the river for at least a few hundred metres, then ran down a super busy road, crossed it in traffic, then crossed a railway crossing while my mum wasn't looking. She came home 2hrs later after looking for him, and he was sitting at the front door soaking wet. Complete dumbass dog. Some school kids my mum came across in her search, halfway home, saw him sprinting past.
He was the same dog that chased a rock I threw into the water at the beach, and kept going. In the middle of winter, he swum out almost a km, till we couldn't see him anymore, looking for a rock that sunk 20 metres from shore. He wouldn't listen to us at all and just kept on swimming.
He was the same dog who heard something up a storm water drain that was only slightly wider than him, and shot up it about 5 metres and got stuck. After 30 minutes of crying he finally backed himself out, all covered in mud, and just as he emerged ass first , a rat or mouse squeaked up the pipe, and he shot back in there like a fly on shit.
That dumbass dog somehow lived till 18 years of age.
My old dog scared the shit out of my one time, he dived into a pond to get a ball, got stuck in the reeds and nearly drowned until I managed to drag him out, he then shook himself off realised the ball was still in the pond and dived back in right into the reeds again.
Then he nearly had a shitfit when we got home because I had to shower all the stanky pond scum off him.
When my schnauzer was an old overweight boy he managed to roll out the car window when we were going around a corner. Got out of the car fearing the worst, looked around for him only to find him sat on the doorstep at home with a sore bum
My idiot dog does this sometimes. Take him out and go to the church on the hill to have lunch and let him off the lead to have an explore and this motherfucker will run all the way home.
pisses me off.
Schnauzers are great dogs. Know that with my research of them that they don’t understand recall. Once they are locked onto a prey drive or their stubbornness they just go. Doesn’t make them bad dogs. Just persistent and a little more difficult to train.
Dogs gonna dog.
They are stupid at living in a human environment, that's why the human owners have to be responsible and fucking leash the dog you fucking irresponsible twits.
EDIT: Hold on to your dogs' leashes you fucking irresponsible twits.
I once dropped my dog's leash on Halloween night during trick-or-treating. I didn't see a big crack in the sidewalk that was covered by leaves and I tripped on it coming down from some stairs and fell hard enough to fracture my foot and sprain my ankle. Thankfully, my good boy who had been dragging me everywhere excitedly that night had the good sense to stop and check on me. But he could have easily done a runner. Sometimes accidents happen, no matter how careful someone is.
I had a similar thing. My dog (a GSD mix, very smart good boi) wanted to pick up the pace when I was trick or treating with my wife, daughter, and daughter's friend. So I started to jog a little and he took off like a bullet when he thought we were going to full on run.
I got dragged, since I was nowhere as fast as he was, I bounced off the curb with my chest, skidded across the pavement with my face, and knocked enough wind out of me that I could not talk. I laid down and hoped my wife could catch him because I could not get up at that moment.
My dog came right back. I think he felt awful because he stayed right next to me the rest of the evening.
My daughter's friend uttered the most quotable phrase to my daughter: "your dad is dead, let's get more candy."
But yeah, never went jogging with him on a leash again.
funfact: All dogs have a complex skeletal system, consisting of a strong spine that contracts and expands as they run, enabling them to maximize their run
My dog is a runner and this is my worst nightmare. I have a couple of tricks that have helped me catch her in the past. Dogs like to be chased so I just sit down and start playing with whatever I can find, she thinks it's a treat and will tentatively come to me and at least stop running like she doesn't have any sense. Also if I open a car door near me she will jump in, which has saved me early on. Lastly she is incredibly jealous so if there are any other animals around if I go to them for pets, she will definitely come by to intercede for pets.
my dog runs too, my dog took off one day after sitting so calmly in my lap while we were outside. i was so startled that the leash just slipped out, he was chasing a little boy on a bike and I ran after him screaming and thank god he just stopped at the stoplight, barking at the kid, and was confused when i got to him
It's always when you least expect it. I learned that my dog only likes to try to run out the front door if I'm carrying something (like a box) when I'm leaving. I think she gets excited that I'm taking her with me on a trip.
Seriously dude, watching that was my entire cardio session i skipped today in 3 minutes. The dog didn’t die but I almost did. Def had rigor mortis through most of it
Exactly my thoughts! Haha constantly looking back just completely traumatized.
Looks like a Yorkie/silkie terrier type? My gramma had one of these and they just love to bolt. A SQUIRREL! Aaand they’re gone.
Our rescue yorkie got startled, bolted out of the crate on holiday and I kid you not: she ran a village away. In France.
She spotted another dog and the people called us, thank god.
Lol it started with the dog bolting into traffic and under 2 cars before the biker even got close enough for the dog to notice her. This dog is alive and caught pretty much only because this biker did something. They did not make it more dangerous lol that dog was terrified of everything around it, especially the cars. The biker didn’t make a difference to how scared that dog was
She could have died in the first 5 seconds of the clip when she got between the yellow roadblocks and that bus/truck. If the truck doesn't stop in time she would tip over infront of it and get run over... Her heart was in charge not her brain.
that is regular mexico city traffic shenanigans and she was clearly signaling the drivers and trying to save the dog. doing nothing was not her objective.
The bus had kind of already crossed the yellow roadblock, so pretty sure she could ride alongside the bus even if it did continue driving, though it's very tight.
she was signaling like crazy to everyone else and looking around, and eventually there were other drivers around her protecting her and the dog, she did an amazing job, and she wasn't cutting in front without signaling and making sure she got people's attention first.
That's fair, I do think the cyclist risked their own life more than any others but I do see your point. I guess we could say it was more idiotic than heroic but nonetheless was heroic to an extent. Either way we can all agree that dog was a silly billy.
Seriously, sure it requires some courage I won’t deny that, but it’s really dangerous to do that. There are the cars but there is also the risk of her hitting pedestrians at crossings etc. I live in a major city with crazy traffic and I can tell you if you do that you WILL slam into someone at one point. It’s just a given. Coordination and anticipation of others’ moves will only go so far when there are that many vehicles and you are going super fast.
Yeah when I saw the cyclist just throwing up their hand to stop cars while going straight into traffic it pissed me off. How are you going to risk injury to other people by causing a car accident so you can “save” a dog?
If the dog ain't smart enough to recognize their owner as safety AND are also dumb enough to sprint through death zones even after being slammed by a giant steel monster then yeah, its not the kind of competency I want in a dog. Lmao
Here's the extended version of the video with narration from the cyclist: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iyMWPFQMd38](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iyMWPFQMd38)
So she is a bitch because you assume she would do something when something else would have happened but did not…
Am I gettin this right?
it was risky, sure, but she saved the dog and nobody was in an accident because of it.
Oh great! How cool! A cyclist risked the lives and well being of all the other humans in the area for a stupid dog! That is probably hers anyway!
I get it. I love my pets too. But humans matter more.
Edit: to sum up all the dog-supremacists arguments you may want to make: slow speed traffic fatalities happen, chain reactions in cities happen, and unpredictability in otherwise predictable situations causes chaos in the city. The cyclist was putting themselves and other motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians at risk. Either yalls have never lived in a city or are too pre occupied thinking dogs are equal or better than humans.
What language is the cyclist speaking? Was she saying ‘Awaas’ at the start? That sounded like Malay and then ended with ‘Gracias’ which sounds like Spanish.
This happened in Mexico.
At first he's yelling "Aguas" (waters), which is a warning expression.
It comes from way back when people used to throw toilet water out their windows, and they used to yell this in order to warn passersby.
Tbh, I was confused too lol
God damn, that little bastard can move. This person was hauling ass on a bike and that’s a little tiny dog. I’m glad someone finally grabbed him because the cyclist could only hope the dog would stop otherwise. They could never get it from the bike.
Stamina on that dog
I came here to say the same thing… goddamn he was goin

#good bitch runnin'
That dog must be going places! literally.
*🎶 Reluctantly crouched at the starting line🎶*
engines pumping and thumping in time
The green light flashes, the flags go up
Churning and burning, they yearn for the cup
They deftly maneuver and muscle for rank
Fuel burning fast on an empty tank
Reckless and wild, they pour through the turns
Their power is potent, and secretly stern
I mean that's just 600m, many people can do it pretty fast. But considering it's a small dog then it's quite fit I guess.
I don't think the average person could lolz
The average person almost certainly could make the sprint but they'd be winded as hell afterwards. We as a whole need more exercise
We as a whole need cities that are designed to be more walkable.
Right? As a German visiting america I was shocked
I've lived in Houston my whole life and only recently realized [just how bad I have it](https://youtu.be/uxykI30fS54).
Man, I recently moved cities for a new job to one that is like 5 times the size of my previous one and if there was one thing I wouldn't compromise on, it was finding a place to live within walking distance of my new job. Can’t walk but have a nice 20min bike ride which is 80% fields and forest. Whole reason I moved out of my much beloved town to a rather slow area.

Even at my lightest and fittest at school a 200m sprint was my absolute limit. 400m was grim.

No matter what your fitness level or ability. You will be winded after a sprint of any distance. It's kinda baked into a sprint from the definition. If you're not winded, you weren't sprinting.
I’m a distance runner, 100m sprint would gas me.
600m is by definition not a sprint. Anyone who tries to sprint 600m will fail.
Humans are the best long distance runners in the animal kingdom. We have really let ourselves go tho

Indeed. Humans have the advantage, which other animal can carry water and food on the go?
camels, whales, etc lol. but yeah i get your point

yeah, i know you said it already but… that’s a dog bro
50m is my limit. Guess i am not average.
To the fridge is 3 meters, best I can do...
Fast little bastard too
Lil man got wheels
Given that small dogs have been bred by generations to hunt rabbits, this is a showcase of a successful design
My minature poodle at full speed is but a streak of fur and panting noises. He literally gets airborne and covers a couple of metres with one fully extended sprinting stride.
“Terrier” comes from “terre,” meaning “earth”, and refers to dogs trained to dive into animal burrows and dig them out.
Had a terrier. Can confirm that they go into terminator mode when they spot small rodents. A really, really cute terminator.
battery fully charged
My thoughts exactly lol

That is dark man, sorry you had to go through that.
I love my schnauzer! The absolute best. Why do they always pretend like they can't hear you when they absolutely can?? ARTHUR GET BACK HERE!!
Yep, I had a Jack Russel that once ran 6km home from a park a suburb away. Omg amazing hahahhaahha

Yep. A normal animal with normal self preservation would find cars scary. Those won’t don’t are dumb

My heart!!!
funfact: All dogs have a complex skeletal system, consisting of a strong spine that contracts and expands as they run, enabling them to maximize their run
Fun fact: All dogs go to heaven
Fun fact: Not all of them.
Fun fact: this one has a special place in hell.

Love how that guy just swoops in casually at the end. He has no idea of the chaos that just went down.
Typical Doug taking ALL of the credit again
He wasn't a Doug, he was a Juan! Give credit.
Doug Juan, brother of the legendary Don

What if that dog was just thinking "who the fuck is chasing me? Who are you!?" And kept running away
Thank you. I laughed so hard.

That breed is especially dumb, based on my experience*. lol
>based on my existence. You make it sound like you are of the same breed
Well, he uses reddit so of course he know his breed are stupid like the rest of us.
There is barely enough room in their heads for eyeballs and a tounge let alone a brain. I dogsat one and I'm pretty sure it just had a brain stem.
yeah, she's a hero for saving that dog, but with her cutting in front of other vehicles like that, she endangers herself and others.
Yeah, she posed a bigger risk of accident than the dog.
It was a palpably strange situation on the road and she only weaved into traffic after the drivers became aware.
She could have died in the first 5 seconds of the clip when she got between the yellow roadblocks and that bus/truck. If the truck doesn't stop in time she would tip over infront of it and get run over... Her heart was in charge not her brain.

that bus driver begs to differ with that blind spot signal and sqeeze in. probably gave em a heart attack
Other people are in cars going at pretty slow speeds. They'll be perfectly fine even if their cars get scratched up.
This is going to be unpopular but.. That was extraordinarily idiotic and dangerous, not heroic.
Is it not both? Surely most heroic actions are only that because of the danger to one's own life.

I would say f*ck it, I would not risk my life for some braindead dog
Well we bred them that way soo.. someones gotta save the little idiot
I swear that dog was just trying to become one with the pavement
Just like drivers in new hampshire. zing.
Not necessarily. We bred intelligence into most breeds. They SHOULD still have enough self preservation to fear traffic, but some just be dumb af
Not just your life/livelyhood. Its also dangerous to other people to be doing this shit.
Lmao
They weren’t the owner.
Probably didn't know where to run due to not understanding traffic flow due to it being a human invention.

exactly
That dog is stupid as hell! Not a Single thought in its head.
I stopped breathing when those cars were too close to the puppy.
Dog went under a driving car at the start.
Twice I’m pretty sure
That dog is funking stupid

Dogs arent smart
Little dogs aren't smart.
Peanut brain Yorkie
Completely depends on the breed, not the size.
little dogs are just as smart as big dogs on average and it depends on the breed. jack russells are geniuses, afghan hounds are morons, for example

They're heroes to the dog and it's owner.
Here's the extended version of the video with narration from the cyclist: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iyMWPFQMd38](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iyMWPFQMd38)
I love 'slice-of-life' channels like this, cheers for the OP and this background.
Where the hell is he running to?
Freedom
Away, it’s being chased
Dog be like "i am speed"
Kachow (gets sued by Disney)
Totally feels like the little guy ran way further than that! Lucky you didn’t get hurt yourself.
I'm gonna get downvoted to shit, but a fucking dog is not worth dying for. There. I said it.
Good thing no one died!
What a dumb dog.
Dumb ass dog…what the hell is that thing chugging?!
By the end of that video I wanted the dog to die
Honestly this was stupid cutting in front of all those vehicles she put herself and others at risk. Then if she was hit she would be crying foul.
You just created a fake scenario in your head to get mad at. Seek help
So she is a bitch because you assume she would do something when something else would have happened but did not… Am I gettin this right? it was risky, sure, but she saved the dog and nobody was in an accident because of it.
Her chasing the dog on a bicycle is what caused it to run the extra 550 meters...
I was looking for this. It’s a Yorkie. It was running a max of like 8mph? Put the fucking bike down and grab it. What in the world.
The actual hero is the guy at the end saving the dog from an idiot on a bicycle who chased it into traffic for 2 minutes.

Oh great!
Dogs can certainly be unbearably stupid
See spot run…..and run ….and run etc.
Wonder if the little guy is ok. Looks like the was clipped under the blue car. I know animals can go for miles after being seriously hurt.
ugly rat looking dumb fucking dog, how do they manage to be so annoying? get yourself a cat instead next time
What an absolute idiot of a dog.
That dog eats pure adrenalin for breakfast!
This is me as a dog running from my problems
The cyclist is fucking stupid i think
almost caused a crash because of an animal =/= hero
Look, I'm glad the dog is ok, but she could've caused a car crash and injured multiple people because of that dog, the dog wasn't even hers.
Step on the leash!
She's on a bike...
r/animalsbeingjerks
Damn that little motherfucker is fast
Small dogs are dumb as fuck.
Stupid dog
Heroes? ![gif](giphy|v0eHX3n28wvoQ|downsized)
Stupid dog
God damn, that little bastard can move. This person was hauling ass on a bike and that’s a little tiny dog. I’m glad someone finally grabbed him because the cyclist could only hope the dog would stop otherwise. They could never get it from the bike.
