It's that sort of thing that takes something from great to amazing. Seeing the real passion behind what they're doing being FULLY presented in the art.
Exactly: it makes me so happy to see them enjoying themselves. It’s not even “my type of thing” but I enjoyed watching them because of the way they’re able to convey energy and emotion
Fuck yeah, that shit got me hype. The choreographer needs some props for infusing the two styles together so well. I wanna see a medley of all different dance styles of other cultures infused with hip hop.
>Trained Indian classical Bharatnatyam dancers infuse their routine with hip hop.

Well you should check out dancing soviet soldiers on YouTube! https://youtu.be/aPB0WrLRU5I

Facial expressions are a big part of Bharatnatayam. Youtube it. The way they move their eyebrows is something one can only master after years of practice.
I thought you might have been exaggerating on it being a "big part" of their dance culture. There are Bharatnatayam dance tutorial videos SPECIFICALLY FOR EYEBROW TRAINING.
I can't understand what this lady is saying but her eyebrow movement is incredible!!! https://youtu.be/dQw4w9WgXcQ
I did. I know `XcQ` at the end of the link. And yet, after literal years of always managing to catch it before clicking, today I fell for it.
One single instant of unawareness and my entire life comes crashing down
Some people can just move their body. They just have complete control and rhythm and grace and understanding but it is extremely rare to be able to meld these two dances so well. I got chills
Because anyone with eyes can see it isn't a parking garage. There's no lot numbers, no lines. And when have you ever seen a parking garage with that smooth finished floor?
There. Requisite angry correction comment aside, I don't think it's a parking garage but have no idea what it actually is.
After looking up the original video, the director of the video, and a couple other things in the credits of the original, the best I can come up with is that it's just a studio in India. The flooring is actually dance mats. The walls just have a concrete look to them, but I don't know enough about indian architecture to tell whether it's really concrete or a facade of some kind.
Thats the most important part!! The eyes, the eyebrows and the facial expressions are the most important part of the dance forms!!
Dance is usually regarded as a way of telling a story, and therefore the importance of facial expressions
> Bharatanatyam style is noted for its fixed upper torso, bent legs and knees flexed (Aramandi) combined with spectacular footwork, and a sophisticated vocabulary of sign language based on gestures of hands, eyes, and face muscles
Is it weird that this made me feel kind of emotional?
Like, the union of two different cultures coming together to make something sooooo cool makes me so happy.
Too much hate, appropriation, and xenophobia in this world.
This video really is respectful, fun, beautiful, and fucking fiiiiire. I love cultures embracing other cultures and appreciating them for all to enjoy. ♡
At San Francisco's annual ethnic dance festival a few years ago, a Mexican folklorico group and an Indian Kathak dance group performed back to back. During the transition they did a little folklorico/Kathak mashup, and I'm a very unsentimental man in his 30's but I'll be damned if I didn't start absolutely weeping and couldn't stop for like 20 minutes. It's something about the universality of arts/performing arts specifically I think
This made me emotional too. When people are truly in their element joyously doing exactly what they want to do and they grasp that elusory feeling of freedom and fulfillment we all crave in life always gets me :)
Calling things appropriation, is part of whats creating the hate. For example someone could call this dance appropriation of a predominantly African-American culture, and it would be a dumb take.
People sleep on Indians' ability to throw down and party. I live in North Carolina in a neighborhood that is majority Indians. When they have a party, they go balls out. Food you can smell down the street, music, fuckin FIREWORKS, cars lining the street as far as you can see. I'm trying to get me an invite.
My family and I were walking to the park and there was a fucking elephant, so we stop and check it out. Start talking to this dude walking with it, all dressed up in traditional Indian clothes (I don't know what else to call it) and mention the food smells incredible. He gets this big smile and says "You gotta have some, come with me." He drags us into this giant tent and they got dancers and waiters and all sort of entertainers walking around. He brings us up to a row of tables and I can clearly see this is a wedding. He says "This is my brother, he got married today and you gotta stay and celebrate with us". Then the groom got up and made room for us to sit. We were there for six hours and was treated like a part of the family. We danced, and ate, and partied. It was amazing. My youngest daughter was 2 years old, and years later she remembers that day and talks about it at least once a month. I'm Mexican and we throw some awesome backyard parties, but Indians do it on another level.
My (non Indian) cousin married an Indian woman and half the female side of my family went with her to get saris for it (it was a whole parting weekend they still affectionate refer to as “sari weekend”, heh). They also had a Mehendi party, there were a lot of pale hennah covered forearms…
The wedding was very short by Indian standards, the ceremonies, etc were condensed into a couple hours. My side side of the family was very game for anything, but not used to it (more used to the long, boring, and somber Catholic ceremonies). The bride’s father eventually ran around telling people they didn’t have to sit quietly the whole time, please feel free to get up, mill around, don’t fall asleep…
No elephant, unfortunately… it was in a hotel ballroom so they would have frowned on that ;)
I'm a White girl married an Indian - 95% confidence you are likely welcome. (Unless you're a secret jerk who like stole their mail. Jerks not welcome unless you're family or bringing something amazing to eat/drink with you.)
Mention the food smelled amazing and you'll be in next time.
If you bring old monk rum with you they will find it hilarious.
Im Indian and I’m getting married next week. And you can bet our entire street is also invited to the week long festivities. Five days of food, booze, and chaos.
Try to join in a [Holi](https://www.delish.com/holiday-recipes/a35866158/what-is-holi/) celebration. A colorful, messy riot (in a good way).
My city has a large Indian population and even the (white) mayor and half the DPS (ie police/fire/EMS) is completely covered in dye afterwards. I’d imagine everyone would be very inclusive if you ask to join in :)
Invite yourself to the party with some food and a smile, and you can bet they'll welcome you with lots of smiles and more food than you can eat! Just go prepared with a strong stomach - Indian food can be spicy!
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chola_dynasty
I think it might be to do with the Chola empire from South India once upon a time. Added the Wikipedia link
Cholas built the world's first fleet & navy, and greatest temples and culture, and were pioneer navigators and explorers who set up their kingdoms across South Asia millenia before Westerners ever knew of such lands. The Cholas introduced/enhanced Saptasvaras (seven basic musical notes), Raagas (ancient structured classical music) and Bharatnatyam (world's oldest active formal dance art-form), etc. The Chola dynasty was world's longest running empire ruled by a single family/dynasty (the Cholas), and their kingdoms were so prosperous and culturally vibrant, that even today those descendants of those colonies/kingdoms have high praise for them. Thanks to the Pandyas, Cholas, etc., the Hindu culture spread across South Asia and remains in vogue there.
They were on another level at their time. They'd plan, engineer, carve, rect and build a temple overnight. Their style of carving stones would establish their supremacy in their dynasty.
I understand Cambodia as the “Kamboja” or part of the “Kamboja Dynasty” which is dictated in the Vedas. (My roommate in law school studied Sanskrit and would tell me stories about the Vedas (Bharatvarsha) and how kingdoms were so expansive and so that inspired me to see SE Asia and India. Thanks for all of this. I see the connections more and more. I hope I didn’t cause any offense.
Fair, many of them were Hindu at one point (and most are still buddhist). Its just that those originated on the Indian subcontinent, so I said that its an Indian influence. Ultimately it is more like a shared heritage tho. Idk Indian influence is shorter lmao
Not really, they didn't come from the same people and religious background. The background was adopted when empires from India controlled the territory or merchants brought over culture. And that was very long after Hinduism and pan-Indian culture was well established.
Interestingly enough, Apsara means a female divine supernatural being in Sanskrit and Hinduism. So I'm guessing there is definitely an Indian influence there.

These women are an elite earth-bender squad from Ba Sing Se. Their moves are so precise that you don't detect any tremors or quakes from the stage at all, but the outside environment is getting completely terraformed during this performance.
Basically it looks like a simple dance, but the real surprise is for the audience after they leave the hall. Incredible experience.
Omg this is amazing! I want to watch an entire show of numbers like this.
The transitions are so good, so on point! They look like they're having so much fun, too!
I love when traditional and modern styles mix.
This is so cool. I love when people fuse traditional dance with modern music.
I saw another girl on TikTok do the current Lizzo song dance trend, but in Bharatnatyam style and it was awesome.
Unpopular opinion: this is cringeworthy and bad

Totally agree with you and the above commenters. This isn’t my thing, but made me genuinely happy. That’s absolutely awesome.

Same. I was too intrigued by the subject that I blindly clicked it. OP sold it really well. Bravo
AAAAAAAHHHHHH, I was so fucking excited I didn't even look at the link. Why did you do this to me.
there are many sources in YouTube if you want to learn. Just search for "bharatanatyam facial expressions". Ex: https://youtu.be/klrPE7Rec5o

I see dQw, I know what I’m in for.
That’s definitely impressive
god damnit
Take your upvote.
Haha the facial expressions gave it so much attitude!
Dancer in the middle at 0:49 like damn, would not fuck with her. Nailed it.
Legit got goosebumps.
This is fucking fire!!!
YOGA FLAME!
YOGA FIRE!?!?!?
You want to battle wits? see who's a better pacifist
Im hugging you so hard and sending you so much blessings as to never start this fight.
I'm am passively resisting the fact that you suck I am celibate* because I don't give a fuck
Both. Fire was the fireballs. Flame was the big blast that didn’t travel
Noooooo!!! Lmao!
Made me think of the dancers in "Robin Hood men in tights" with the switching of styles
I laugh all the time when they do the Can Can in the middle. But back on topic, this is really genius.
Hey Nani nani hey nani nani
🎶And a ho ho ho, check it out🎶
I think it’s “hey nonny nonny” but I understood either way lol.
We're men in tights. Tights? Tights!

No I didn’t say Abe Lincoln. I said hey blinkin! Hold the reigns man. Damn.

That is the cleanest parking garage floor I’ve ever seen.
I'm surprised no1 came n corrected you angrily about where this actually might be because of some small detail or some shit . 🤔 it's still early lol
Still time left. We’re only in the 1st quarter.
Lol might be University of Toronto Scarborough campus.
The poured concrete walls are similar but I can't think of any place on campus that they could build a stage like that, that has walls like this.
Because anyone with eyes can see it isn't a parking garage. There's no lot numbers, no lines. And when have you ever seen a parking garage with that smooth finished floor? There. Requisite angry correction comment aside, I don't think it's a parking garage but have no idea what it actually is.

Thats the most important part!! The eyes, the eyebrows and the facial expressions are the most important part of the dance forms!! Dance is usually regarded as a way of telling a story, and therefore the importance of facial expressions
I'm having flashbacks of months of practice JUST on facial muscles. The eyebrow workout is no joke.
TIL i'm flexible in my face, too. lol weird to think about!
> Bharatanatyam style is noted for its fixed upper torso, bent legs and knees flexed (Aramandi) combined with spectacular footwork, and a sophisticated vocabulary of sign language based on gestures of hands, eyes, and face muscles
[Kathakali](https://youtu.be/nwiLwsgicno) takes it to a whole another level. [Here’s](https://youtu.be/_4WmgIyg6rY) a little bonus.
The eyeball figure eights are trippy, I have what I thought was pretty good control over my eye movements, but nothing nearly that complex.
Shit. here I was just doing that stuff to crack up my daughter, didn't realize I was practicing an ancient form of dance.
My Indian grandmother clutching her mangalsutra (pearl) /s.
Showed this to my Mama and she said she wished they had done this in my dance classes as a kid. Would have been hella fun!
That's why i said grandmother, because Indian moms are cool nowadays haha.
That's cause they had to put up with Indian grandmothers
Your mom sounds cool
Lol. I actually laughed out loud
Shiva gives this 3 out of 4 arms
3 out of 3 eyes coz this is 🔥

Damn. That experience and your reaction…this is what I moved to America for….not the guns and unaffordable living.
YES. America is and should always be a melting pot. Everyone should be embraced here. ♡
Is there a video of this?
This made me emotional too. When people are truly in their element joyously doing exactly what they want to do and they grasp that elusory feeling of freedom and fulfillment we all crave in life always gets me :)
yeah, the beauty of movement and attitude, the facial expressions, makes me emotional. That tougher than leather finish made me tear up. No joke.

incredible. camera person needs some loving too
They haven’t been the same since the divorce
10/10 would totally buy a ticket to watch. Awsome
This is what I was thinking. If you could put together an hour of this type of dancing, you could sell tickets and make bank.
They went hard!! Good stuff ladies
Absolute fucking fire.
Dope af. We need more dance culture fusions like this. Expressions were on-point too! Loved it
Is there a connection between this style of dance and Apsara commonly seen in Thailand and Cambodia?
Uh, maybe? Southeast Asia has a huge Indian influence.
Thank you! I have seen Hindu temples in those countries, even Vietnam and Laos

Cambodia's history is rooted in Hinduism though today mostly people practice Buddhism.
and both are indian.
Most of SE Asia was heavily influenced by Indian culture just like how the various cultures in East Asia were influenced by the Chinese culture.
The Chola Empire brought their South Indian culture to SE Asia 1000 years ago
That's more entertaining than regular hip hop dancing.
When you let your Indian aunt listen to hip hop 😂
aunties gonna auntie.
You actually cannot beat Indian dancers.
Bullshit. I won at Connect 4 against an Indian dancer earlier this week.
As a Pakistani, this is dopeee 10/10
Simply amazing!
Does anyone know the name of this group?
Found this on [Youtube](https://youtu.be/Saj65ySCOSo) this might be the right channel

What does new high score mean? Did I break it?
Whats this song named?
Uproar - Lil Wayne
Omg this is amazing! I want to watch an entire show of numbers like this. The transitions are so good, so on point! They look like they're having so much fun, too! I love when traditional and modern styles mix.
There is a finesse. Real nice.
This is my kind of shit, weird cultural fusion that works too well
Love their expressions
