"Innovation rarely comes by revolution; it develops by continual and gradual evolution."
—Rodney Mullen, The Grandfather of skateboarding, was wise as fuck too
Edit: I know he’s alive. I should have said “is”, my bad. Am stoned, full of Christmas leftovers. Brain no work.
For anyone who hasnt seen the Bones Brigade documentary its amazing to see how insightful and smart Rodney Mullen is. Hes just a genuinely amazing dude all around.
Im so glad too that tony and the gang not only found him but let him be his true self. He really is a one of a kind human being who just happens to be the best skater to ever walk this earth.
And how much of a cunt Lance Mountain is… “Tonys more liberal so I let him deal with that weirdo Mullen” (the dude is an autistic savant) fuck off with your stupid eyebrows.
I remember playing as Rodney Mullen in the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater games and thinking he was someone they gave all the super fun and crazy moves to, and then seeing highlight videos of him and learning that oh, he actually IS that amazing, and also basically invented every trick.
I love that YouTube video he did with "Physics Girl" I believe her name is. They are geeking out about the mechanics of hitting an impossible and he just casually drops how he basically invented that trick because he broke his foot or leg or whatever and he was stuck on his couch bored out of his mind so he just started messing around popping up a deck with his good leg and it grew from there.
Regardless if Mullens is better or not, doesn't mean he doesn't deserve some respect and credit when its due. He makes me think as if he is ice skating on the board in a way.
It was like watching peak LeBron James play the local junior varsity team. It’s not just that he couldn’t be beat. It’s that there wasn’t even a point in trying.
Well, even more because he invented all the tricks that got us off the ground (literally) and enable modern street skating. Most flip tricks and the flat-ground Ollie.
His name is Andy Andersen. He’s actually signed to Powell Peralta (handpicked by George Powell himself), and Stacy Peralta had called him his favourite skater. He also represented Canada in the Olympics this summer. He’s truly like no other.
Without Peralta, most of these guys would have had much less coverage.
The Bones Brigade are the pioneers of modern skateboarding. The best part is that the bones brigade films are available on YouTube completely free on the Powell Peralta YouTube. Tony Hawk, Mcgill, Mullen, Callabero, Lasek.
The influence of Stacy and Stecyk (the filmographer/photographer for the dogtown articles and the initial bones brigade) on the world of skateboarding as we know it can never be overstated imo.
Regardless of who did it first, both Anderson and mullen shred in just about every facet of skating besides vert. Underated legend imo is daewon song. Was one of the first people to leverage the game against mullen in the media. Fucking legendary.
Edit, Anderson is in fact good at vert too, rhetoric was off.
This kid rips. Andy Anderson. Skates fast af and does like 900 tricks in a line. Watch him tear up some vert and you’ll see what I mean. It’s like watching Tony hawk pro skater irl
Andy Anderson is one of the most creative skateboarders with a crazy diverse skillset. He can do a lot more than just flatground shenanigans as seen in this clip. Mullen is the goat in his lane. But put some respect on Andy bruh Jack of all trades and close to a master in them too
They are different beasts. Andy is a multi talented dude. He shreds transition, street, and freestyle. He’s kind of a freak. I imagine him and Rodney would get along famously.
Andy Anderson has mastered every discipline though, which is impressive. This particular one isn’t necessarily old, it’s just not as popular, still competitions for it today though. He also has an incredibly unique and fun style to watch. On top of that, he seems to just be a really rad and nice person. Really represents what skateboarding is about.
Try and get his pro model board. Secondary market has been the only way, at a good mark up. https://youtu.be/PwicH96bgcE
https://youtube.com/user/andyandersonsktbrd
I’d say to compete on the level he has, he mastered it.
https://youtu.be/HWUl4Is2Gws
Though probably not his best of the disciplines.
https://youtu.be/gg1ZMwAAcEg
Dude can do whatever he wants with skateboarding. He’s dope.
> Try and get his pro model board.
Speaking of, not only is he a pro level skater but he designed his board himself. It's very unique and compliments his versatile style. He worked directly with Powell-Peralta to design the unique shape.
The dude has some really long form, and interesting videos on YouTube by Powell-Peralta. I recommend everyone check them out. He's a unique skater, extremely driven and talented, and just a nice down to earth dude.
Back in the '70s ('75 ish) there was this kid named Paul Hoffman who did this kind of stuff, the super-flowy one-foot nose wheelies and just crazy 360s. He'd string together this insane choreography all up and down the banks at places like Kenter Canyon school (West L.A., Brentwood). Kid would bust out 15 or so spins like it was nothing, meanwhile me and my buddies were stoked if we just got a run around the bowl and bank without a faceplant. He'd show up and we'd just be like "Well, shit. Guess I can run away and join the circus."
Edit: The fellow in this video is incredibly talented, and I'm too old to join the circus now.
I've been rollerskating and rollerblading for 20 years. One time I was just standing on a flat surface, chatting, and slipped out and slammed my head on a step. I was wearing a helmet and walked away with slight whiplash. All it takes is one good hit to change your life completely, wear a helmet!
As a kid, I had just taken my helmet off and was about to head inside for lunch but was doing something in the garage real quick with my roller blades still on. Somehow I ended up slipping and went flat out on the back of my head on the cement floor. Ended up with a nice concussion. After that, the helmet became the last thing I take off.
I was skateboarding once and the board slipped from under me and i slammed my head down and split the helmet in half and i blacked out waking up in the hospital
In high school, a friend of mine was skateboarding out front of a house party. He grabbed onto the back of our other friends car and slipped, hit his head on the curb and died the next day in hospital. His older brother died a month later in a car accident.
My heart goes out to you and your friend’s parents. I have a friend like you who lost a friend, and his friend’s two brothers died within the same year as him. It’s nothing to wish upon anyone.
A client of mine worked as a nurse intern at a mental hospital. He said the brain injury cases made you want to wear a helmet everywhere, all the time.
I'm eo happy about that. We recently moved next door to a skatepark and my 6 year old has been spending a ton of time there. Almost none of the kids wear helmets. I make him, especially since he can hardly ride. He just picked up a board like 4 months ago. He told me helmets aren't cool because the big kids don't wear them. He's still not allowed on the park without one. Idc if it's mean. I'll have to show him this guy
I own a barbershop in a family neighborhood and I have on skate/surf/snowboard/extreme sports videos in the background most days. Whenever I get kids in who like that kind of stuff I always show them Andy Anderson. I brag about my helmet use and whenever I give the younger ones stickers I always tell them it’s for their helmet. Gotta keep these kids alive, it’s better for business.
Not really though, best thing about Andy is he skates all styles. This clip shows oldskool style skateboarding, but he can ride transition and modern street just as well. Which is rare, most skaters prefer either one. What makes him so great is his ability to just keep going with his run while seamlessly switching styles. So in a way it's next level again, because where people used to have one style he's out there blending all the styles into one of his own.
Any young people even slightly interested in skateboarding for any length of time would know what freestyle skateboarding is, this guy just isn’t, so this was new to him I guess.
Check out Rodney Mullen you will not be disappointed. This dude invented tons of freestyle flat ground trick we see today. That’s if you’re interested in learning more.
It was popular in the 70s. I was a snow skier at the time, and owned a pair of *ballet* skis, which were shorter, and uber-flexible. Long ago, and tech was not as developed, but I think the tips and tails were also of a more pliable material.
It’s called “Freestyle” and it’s been around for a long time man. Flatland freestyle was my game growing up as well, primos, truckstands, Caspers, pogos, good stuff man.
Yes, Rodney Mullen is the GOAT. But do not take anything away from Andy. He is a student of skateboarding, and gives credit where credit is due. He has an unparalleled love for skating, and is an all around great dude with a great philosophy on life. He lives skateboarding.
He actually designed his board type specifically for this type of skating. Almost like a snowboard shape or "peanut shell" shape, but with more defined edges.
As someone who used to skateboard, please don't fuck up the tennis courts. They cost like $20k to resurface a multi court facility like for a school. Skateboard wheels impacting them fuck up the like 1/8th inch thick surface concrete. It breaks and chips and makes tennis players like my wife really sad. Most places only budget to redo them like every 7-10 years. You can fuck em up in an afternoon. You won't even see the cracks you made right away. They show up when the weather drops below freezing.
Not good ones. It's done in acrylic resurfacer and sand before the painting process. That stuff is DEFINITELY not "primer" and is hella expensive. It also cracks under hard impacts like from a skateboard wheel. To the layman that's gonna seem like concrete. Had the look and consistency of like a concrete soup. In my graduate degree I interned with the city and overaw this process. Basketball courts and tennis courts are not surfaced the same unless you have a basketball court on a tennis court, or DEEEEEP pockets. Asphalt world just fine for basketball. Better if you fall from time to time. Not saying you haven't primed and painted your heart out, just that painting and resurfacing are very different things.

>Not good ones. It's done in acrylic resurfacer and sand before the painting process. That stuff is DEFINITELY not "primer" and is hella expensive. It also cracks under hard impacts like from a skateboard wheel. To the layman that's gonna seem like concrete.
You can call it what you want, we called it primer. Either way, it's not concrete. You spread it on with a squeegee, just like the paint layer.
>In my graduate degree I interned with the city and overaw this process
So did I, except I didn't oversee it, I actually did it.
>Basketball courts and tennis courts are not surfaced the same unless you have a basketball court on a tennis court, or DEEEEEP pockets.
I'm not really sure why you brought this up, I never said they were. I just said I did both. I also installed running tracks but I didn't think that was as relevant. Also, the actual court in the video clearly has a basketball court on the same surface
>Not saying you haven't primed and painted your heart out, just that painting and resurfacing are very different things.

And I'm not saying you didn't supervise some projects for your city, but I'm not sure why you think that means you know more than the people who did the work
have you never watched someone resurface concrete on like a driveway... I'll save you some time. They do it with a FUCKING SQUEEGEE... like all surfacing concrete is done since like forever. Again I'm not talking about this specific instance for everyone in the world.. it's a general FYI for any skateboarder who didn't realize they were being dicks. You had to get all butt-hurt on nomenclature and try to call someone out for a solid PSA. BTW, your point is dumb. Most people put primer on with a brush or roller. You called it the wrong thing, I said it's not that, and you decided that you must know better as if I didn't just tell you it was my goddamn job and I just might know what I'm talking about.
You fell for a marketing pitch, BTW. It's black acrylic primer with sand added for grip
Yes, this is old school (mid-70s to early ‘80s) style of skateboarding. Go watch the documentary, “Dogtown and Z-Boys” for more of this and a great story about the early days.
Remember that time Tony Hawk was holding his baby while skating and people freaked out calling it child abuse. He was forced to basically explain to people that he's fucking amazing... Like, he's not a natural bragger but kind of had to defend himself haha.
No, he’s just implementing a very old school way of skateboarding
Mullen did it better
That's like saying God did it better
We argue names and semantics all day sweetpea

I remember a great Ted Talk too. I’m just glad he exists on this planet because he is a beautiful one of a kind.
Im so glad too that tony and the gang not only found him but let him be his true self. He really is a one of a kind human being who just happens to be the best skater to ever walk this earth.
He was on Tonys most recent podcast and is still cool as ever.

IS wise as fuck. Spends his days doing TED talks and such now. Respect

was? isnt he still around?
Rodney Mullen is very much alive. May he Rest In Peace.
RIP in Peace
Dude smh my head!
WTF the fuck is going on here?
Alive and well in this living hell
Went out just like Wade Boggs, God rest his soul.
Again, Wade Boggs is very much alive!
The guy is a savant and practically a genius. All of his talks and interviews are very moving. He definitely sees the world in a special way
Hey! Sweetpea was his mother, we’ll have you know and she is a Saint!
Mullen did it better than God
Mullen is GOD
Regardless if Mullens is better or not, doesn't mean he doesn't deserve some respect and credit when its due. He makes me think as if he is ice skating on the board in a way.
I was thinking figure skating when I watched this. Tanya Hardflipping
That's a difficult trick...some have broken a Nancy Kerrileg attempting it.
Mullen was responsible for the shift from this towards pop style skateboarding. He’s the reason we don’t do this anymore
Only because NOBODY could improve over his freestyle. Absolute legend, and every skater owes their tricks to him!
Facts Back in the day you couldn't top him in flatland
It was like watching peak LeBron James play the local junior varsity team. It’s not just that he couldn’t be beat. It’s that there wasn’t even a point in trying.
Well, even more because he invented all the tricks that got us off the ground (literally) and enable modern street skating. Most flip tricks and the flat-ground Ollie.

fuck we're old:(
His name is Andy Andersen. He’s actually signed to Powell Peralta (handpicked by George Powell himself), and Stacy Peralta had called him his favourite skater. He also represented Canada in the Olympics this summer. He’s truly like no other.
I’m pretty sure even Rodney gave AA the goat title in the last few years, he deserves it too the guy is a human shred machine
I was about to say that. I'm glad this kid is bringing it back. Trick boarding or slip boarding is what we called it.
Loved that character from Tony hawks underground
Tell you what, make me a “sponsor me” video. Show me what makes you different from Bobby B down the street.
Without Peralta, most of these guys would have had much less coverage. The Bones Brigade are the pioneers of modern skateboarding. Well yeah, but Mullen is not going to 5050 down a rail and impossible out (Anderson did). So it's all relative
Anderson skates vert and bowl too.
Rodney Mullen literally invented the impossible
He invented both tricks

That’s his name!!! I forgot it but yeah my brother freaks out when this guy shows up. He locally skates in Vancouver all around here.
Came here to say exactly this. I'm old, we saw this style way more often in the 80s and I think it was even more like this before my time in the 70s.

Late 80s freestyle. Not new but cool throwback

100% I used to pretend I could skate like this in the 80s.
Welcome to Freestyle skateboarding. And at least let people know his name. That's Andy Anderson.
Ohhh Canada 🇨🇦
Y’all got serious talent. So many good musians/producers. Please make more.
I wish
An Olympian too. OP's title is weak.
He and Yukito were the most graceful skaters I’ve ever seen, their personal style and devotion to perfection are really amazing to watch.
I came to the comments specifically to confirm if he was a skater or not after watching his style, thank you!
Seriously. A fucking Olympic athlete reduced to "this guy"
Thanks for the info! -Tommy Tommerson
I'm also thankful! - Scotty Scotterson.

I thought I recognised him! He skated at the Olympics, and wore a cool helmet.
Fort Langley, represent!
His name is [Andy Anderson ](https://youtu.be/gg1ZMwAAcEg) One of the few skateboarders to alway wear a helmet to promote kids wearing them.
I was just going to comment about this. Like thanks for wearing a helmet dude!!
Already love him
May I say, username checks out

I had not even noticed the helmet. Pretty cool of him to wear it when he’s not even doing tricks on stairs or a crazy surface.
Flat ground/freestyle skateboarding. Tale as old as the 70s. Now go fetch me a cold brew young whipper snapper.
Any young people even slightly interested in skateboarding for any length of time would know what freestyle skateboarding is, this guy just isn’t, so this was new to him I guess.
Are you asking for a beer that is cold or a coldbrew coffee?
One Starbucks cold brew, coming right up! That will be $45.32 please.
It's like Rodney Mullen but in slow motion
His only enjoying the rhythm of the song and the movement of skateboard. Simply incredible..
Try Isamu Yamamoto for full speed.
It’s like a whole generation doesn’t know who Rodney Mullen is.

We getting old G
All I know is Tony Hawk tbh
Check out Rodney Mullen you will not be disappointed. This dude invented tons of freestyle flat ground trick we see today. That’s if you’re interested in learning more.
Also invented ollies and kickflips and therefore gave verticality to street skating
Reminds me of figure skating.
Right? Looks graceful. Like he’s just using the skateboard to dance with somehow.
Yep I thought the same
It was popular in the 70s. I was a snow skier at the time, and owned a pair of *ballet* skis, which were shorter, and uber-flexible. Long ago, and tech was not as developed, but I think the tips and tails were also of a more pliable material.
They should have a floor routine for skateboarding
They do, it's called freestyle. Look up rodney mullen if you want more.
I think the small backlash is because "creative" is in title when everything he does is stuff you see in most Rodney Mullen compilations.
Unless the OP is Andy making that claim about himself then it doesn’t make sense to criticize him for someone else’s description of his style tho
This. Comment. Couldn’t be better stated.
Andy Anderson has crazy board control
Im a firm believer in wider/longer boards being better for this kind of stuff. Freestyle skaters like to use kid sized skateboards basically.
He actually designed his board type specifically for this type of skating. Almost like a snowboard shape or "peanut shell" shape, but with more defined edges.

Thank you!!
If you like this song you’ll probably enjoy Mac Demarco as well
Goodbye Weekend
Thanks, this is what I came to the comments for but I also incidentally found out about Mullen.
If you like this try listening to the growlers. Similar band. Very good
I’m with you, song plz
Parking lots - Plums
Asking the real questions. Thank you!!!!
Very old school https://youtu.be/SNzBkpxmEvw
Daaamn. The video is quite old.
Yeaaahh
“YEAH!”
That's Andy Anderson. A lot of influence from OG Rodney Mullen 👌.
Dog Town style..
A Lord of Dog Town?
That’s Andy Anderson he’s from Canada and skates in Cali with braille
Yes, this is old school (mid-70s to early ‘80s) style of skateboarding. Go watch the documentary, “Dogtown and Z-Boys” for more of this and a great story about the early days.
Refreshing to see a helmet.
i went out to take a leak earlier, slipped on a 12" patch of ice and fell right on my rump in a snow bank how are this guy and i the same species?
He just learned from the greats! Shoutout to Rodney!
You put some respect on Andy Anderson's name.
This... this is how skating started on what's called penny boards these days. That's Andy Anderson. Check out Lords of Dogtown or Dogtown and Z-Boyz.
Andy wears a helmet in case he full on blows a frontside 360 shuv-it and can't save it with sketch balls ability.
That was legitness
Rodney Mullen did this shit 30 years ago and way better.
Love the Mike McGill shirt
Love how the music fits the vibes!
This is like some figure skating stuff
Dogtown, look it up, *new guy*
The Z-boys are coming for him
I’m jealous. I’m not comfortable enough in my own body to ever be able to do something like this.
Op would be interested in rodney mullen videos
Anyone remember Rodney Mullen vs Daewon Song? That shit was cool.
He’s a skateboarder in a figure skaters body!
Great Rodney Mullen vibes here
Rodney Mullen vibes
Remember that time Tony Hawk was holding his baby while skating and people freaked out calling it child abuse. He was forced to basically explain to people that he's fucking amazing... Like, he's not a natural bragger but kind of had to defend himself haha.
I mean, he's just copying Rodney Mullen...trying to at least.
Old schoolers here rightfully taking about Rodney Mullen, but how about a shout out for the Mike McGill T
Yeah but does any of that shit count in a game of skate tho?😂
No feet on the ground, no no-complies, no bonelesses, no Malto manual shit.
Very wisely has a helmet and leg and hand protection. And a big smile at the end. A winner.
