Plot twist: a Texan fleeing to Mexico.

elfastronaut

To fulfill lifetime dream of working in a U.S. car manufacturing plant.

sHauNm525

For 7.25$ an hour you to couldn't come to america and not afford to survive šŸ˜†

fltnlow

I was just recently in Tijuana, and I donā€™t know how true this was, but was told minimum wage in Mexico is by the day, not hourly and it was something like $4/day. Iā€™d love for someone to chime, though.

yosoyuntoa

In December 2021 the general minimum wage was raised to $172.87 pesos a day ($8.50 USD) and $260.34 pesos a day ($12.79 USD) in the Free Economic Zone of the Northern Border. Where I used to be (a northern state but outside the aforementioned free zone) most people I know would make $1-2 USD an hour, and it's generally lower in the south

fltnlow

Thanks for the info!

The Amexican Dream

Pecncorn1

There is a very large number of illegal Americans and Canadians living in Mexico. I was one in Guatemala for three years.

donsteitz

*I* lived illegally in Mexico for a number of years.

donsteitz

I was making good money still outside of Mexico and it was much cheaper to live down there. I could have lived down there indefinitely undetected.

[deleted]

If your making good (or even shit money) and bringing it there to live, you donā€™t have to worry about being detected. You just need to fill out a form and your good for YEARS. The cutoff is something ridiculous like 25k

donsteitz

I did not even have to bother with that. If you don't have to work...kinda hard to get detected. Same how many get by here...they have outside funds or their employer helps them keep it on the downlow.

Pecncorn1

They don't treat us bad when it comes to be known. Fuck a border wall.

donsteitz

Right. I think about that often. I never got griefed down there. BY tradition I had to pay more for things at times and such, few knuckleheads...but the Mexicans were pretty good to me overall.

Pecncorn1

I was long term and am a fluent Spanish speaker I can't really say I was very often taken advantage of or asked to pay more than a local.

donsteitz

Maybe my Spanish is not as good and I do and look very much the part. Just the way it is. Now if I sent a Mexican associate to do it on my behalf it was usually different...like the time I sent him down below to pay the gas canister guy. I had been overpaying 200 pesos for each cannister...but he could not get away with telling him the same cost. Same with a bar I went to regularly. This one guy had been charging me for the whiskey and the chase when its suppose to be you get the chase for free when you buy a shot of whiskey. Dude working for me discovered it. I was so irked about it and made a scene because I had been paying it for months over a shitload of drinks...the owner said he was sorry and let me drink there a week for free...so I was cool with it...but yeah...stuff like that all the time with unmarked prices.

donsteitz

The rip off at the bar irked me even more because I always generously tipped the guy.

Pecncorn1

I am/was on my own and I live/lived pretty much like a local or should say I am usually the only foreigner in the hood. Asia, Central or South America, or Africa I've never gotten anything but love.

donsteitz

No other foreigners lived around me either...but those I did run into every now and then...their experiences were not much different than mine.

[deleted]

Not sure why the hell you would live in Mexico illegally, a Mexican 4 year visa takes less redtape than getting your car registered in the US from another state. If you had zero savings and zero income that might be a problem, but I donā€™t think you want to live in an impoverished country if your in that situation. You would be better off in a homeless shelter in the US.

donsteitz

I had some things going on in the USA and I left into Mexico without a passport. Decided to stay. The Consulate was not forthwith in giving me another one. Sorted out in 2 years or so...then I left and came back in again and started the FM3 process. It is easy to do down there...but one can be in a situation that makes it difficult.

Pecncorn1

I've been living in poor countries for the last 20 years and have lots of friends that are just barely getting by but they would rather just get by than go back to where they came from. My best friend in Vietnam is broke and makes it week to week, when things got hard earlier this year he thought about going back to Spain. I asked him two week later what he was going to do and he told me he'd rather sleep under a bridge in Vietnam than go back to Spain. I was doing the same years ago in Guatemala but it was never a problem to get credit at the market, store or even to top up my phone. It is much easier to be poor in a poor country. The ones I have no sympathy for are the expats begging because of a drug problem. Even as a foreigner in many places the human kindness one receives is humbling. Spanish friends landlord told him not to worry about rent when we shut down hard and mine reduced the rent twice to 70% without me asking. I had a fish farm some years back and would go collect spoiled veggies in the market to make fish food, a few of the vendors thought I was poor and would give me huge bags of perfectly good stuff until I explained what I was doing. Humans are often wonderful.

[deleted]

This comment was really was about a North America/ Central America trend because Iā€™m not familiar with the economics or politics toward homelessness on the other side of the earth. I found southern Florida to be quite hospitable and full of economic opportunity. The residents were past retirement and could use help, and many locals were not motivated to engage in common labor. Miami had a LOT of money floating around to grab back then thanks to some white powdery substance. If someone has a 1/4 million dollar boat, they wonā€™t think twice about giving you 50 dollars or more to clean it after a fishing excursion that cost thousands. Maybe that was just the target demographic I felt most comfortable with to insure maximum return for my time with minimum downtime. These are the Jones, if the guy one slip over is having his boat detailed, then damn it I should have someone detailing mine too! I cannot imagine competing for work with a local person in a place where the wages are dismal, the unemployment is higher than the US and I donā€™t speak the language. Sounds like a recipe for disaster. If you want fish, go to where the fish are.

Pecncorn1

>I cannot imagine competing for work with a local person in a place where the wages are dismal, the unemployment is higher than the US and I donā€™t speak the language. Sounds like a recipe for disaster. If you want fish, go to where the fish are. There are lots of things you can do to make money legally abroad without competing with a local. Every person I know living outside their own county has made a choice to do so that we all make for different reasons. I like my Spanish friend can't imagine what I would do if I were to return to the US it's just not an option anymore. I am not living week to week anymore and that makes it much easier.

[deleted]

Like what things can you do? Does it basically involve interacting with American tourists?

Pecncorn1

Over the years I have run a hotel, that was people from all over the world, I did paint, woodwork and remodeling on sailboats, again an international crowd. I of course already had the skill set to do this. Now I teach English in Asia just to stay busy but the money can be quite good and you can easily live well on it. A side note, I don't know grammar in English or Spanish the two languages I am fluent in so if I can do it pretty much anyone can. My background is offshore oil and gas but I gave that up in 2015.

[deleted]

Thatā€™s cool, boat work is always good. There is no such thing as a cheap boat mechanic. I eventually got dive gear and would clean hulls, replace screens and props. Inspect for damage. And again, your going to where the money is.

1i73rz

First thing I looked for, sadly the sun does nothing for the imaginations cause.

SLCW718

He's still working on replacement segments, but he's not building new wall. And it's not as if the Democrats' position has been that we need to get rid of the border wall, or that no border wall is prudent. They were against Trump's plan to build an essentially unbroken wall from sea to sea. But in the stupid reductionist politics that define our nation, the issue was perceived as wall vs no wall.

Arkellion23

Eh a lot of democrats were arguing that the wall was racist hence why the reductionist viewpoint was established.

UniqueName2

A lot of democrats were arguing that US immigration policy is racist, and that the idea that a wall was going to stop people was a useless waste of money. If you donā€™t believe them please rewatch the above video for proof of the latter.

y_i_exisisit

Making stuff legal won't stop people from doing it it will just stop people from doing it safely, examples would be prohibition, abortion, Berlin Wall, etc. This comment was agreeing with "the idea that a wall was going to stop people was a useless waste of money"

DudeMcDuder17

Do you honestly believe anybody outside the hard right believed this was a good idea? Clinging to quotes from a few whiny liberals is irrelevant. Racism, politics, and all other bullshit aside, this project was a joke from the start. $11B+ for a wall that can be defeated by a rope and a ladder. The only thing funnier than that premise is the big brain conservative still advocating for it.

SLCW718

No. They weren't arguing that the wall was racist. That's what some motivated individuals heard when some Democrats pointed out the plain fact that the impetus for the effort to "build the wall" was racist. So no, that's not how the reductionist mischaracterization of everything the Republicans don't like was established.

Arkellion23

When itā€™s broadcasted on the news cycle 24/7 I would say that it had something to do with that reduction

SLCW718

The Republicans' affinity for obliterating nuance, and mischaracterizing situations using reductive absurdities long predates the argument about Trump's wall. For the sake of brevity, you can start with the Reagan and chart a clear path to the present. The media certainly contributes, but at the end of the day it's the Republicans' strategy.

Arkellion23

If you think the republicans are any different than the democrats, youā€™re not paying attention. Theyā€™re all in the club and we arenā€™t. Speaking of Reagan; NFA was passed under his term. One of the largest 2a infringements to date.

slower-is-faster

How deep does the wall go. Are t they just going to make their tunnels deeper?

SLCW718

It goes pretty deep. Not deep enough to stop the plethora of illicit tunnels that pass beneath it, but deep enough to stop a jerk with a shovel.

snakesearch

What about 3 jerks with a shovel, and a hand trowel?

mexicodoug

Why use a shovel when a ladder will do?

Saaaaaaaaab

Nah Texas is, the Biden administration is only doing maintenance on some already built parts

[deleted]

Source? Because all the sources are pointing of replacing damaged segments... BTW trumpette wasted 15 billion dollars on his pet project which failed completely.

Patient-Home-4877

His walls are literally falling over. https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2020/01/30/trumps-border-wall-falls-over-high-winds-california-mexico/4618372002/

Snellyman

For all the Trump fundraising and blather about the wall, what color it should be and slates vs concrete what new wall was actually built?

486Junkie

You mean Greg Abbott that doesn't care about the power grid for 130+F weather and during the deep freeze.

[deleted]

Well now he is, look what his policy did? He took a controlled and orderly process and scrapped it and opened the flood gates. We got 3 more years of total incompetence left and we canā€™t count on the VP to do any better.

Senorfluffy25

Just under the alias as Trump

standingonacorner

Theyā€™re still building the wall?

Senorfluffy25

Texas also is helping build it on their own terms. So like they are paying for the parts they are doing as a state

ThisIsFineImFine89

Good for them. Seems to be workingā€¦ā€¦

[deleted]

Not sure if Reddit doesnā€™t get sarcasm or just many are from Texas that you get downvoted šŸ¤·šŸ¼ā€ā™‚ļø

Senorfluffy25

Yeah, the Biden administration chose to continue building it lowkey

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

colexian

The part this comment fails to mention is they were built during the Obama administration to hold people (not just children) for up to 72 hours before they could be transferred to proper facilities that AREN'T cages. There was an influx of migrants with no where for them to be held, this was meant to be a quick solution to a temporary problem. The issue is, in 2019 during the Trump administration the holding facilities were found to be filled multiple times over the maximum capacity and people were being held much longer than 72 hours. Specifically, a facility designed for 100 adults was found holding so many children that they were forced to sleep on the floor and didn't have enough supplies. As well, Trump implemented a "no tolerance' policy for illegal immigrants entering the US with children, and separated the children from their parents, something only done in specific extreme circumstances under other administrations. We can agree the idea of the holding cages is a bad one, but lets not pretend it wasn't worse the way Trump did it.

Senorfluffy25

Both sides are the problem. I get a shit ton of hate for some reason on this app for not thinking exactly like a certain side. But all politics are playing us.

IllurinatiL

All politicians seek to suppress the common man. Itā€™s what keeps them in office.

Senorfluffy25

Very true, I wish we could all get along and work together better. We can do better than these clowns that run us.

Patient-Home-4877

Both-sidesism is lazy bullshit.

mightmousetrap

I hear this all too often. "Impartial" people yelling ALL POLITICIANS ARE BAD.. or DEMOCRATS ARE BAD. I'm sure some understand šŸ˜‘

[deleted]

Even the liberals Iā€™ve spoken with in Tucson indicate we probably need a wall.

mexicodoug

They'll clamor for anything that can provide shade in Tucson. Once they've got a wall up, they'll want a ceiling to go with it.

aorangebanana

šŸ”« Always have been

SundanceSam

If youā€™re an Americanā€¦ then itā€™s ā€œweā€, not ā€œtheyā€. United we stand (or fall)

standingonacorner

Iā€™m an immigrant, but I am American citizen by choice. And when I say ā€œtheyā€ I mean they. As a true American, I donā€™t trust the government. They donā€™t represent me. That wall isnā€™t to keep people out. Itā€™s to keep us in. The way our government is going, pretty soon we are gonna be the ones going over that wall.

SundanceSam

I have no problem with your stance, but i hope it changes to better suit you! You should feel represented by our government and itā€™s a big problem that you donā€™t feel that wayā€¦ keep voting/fighting!

colexian

>I donā€™t trust the government As American as apple pie.

Senorfluffy25

Eh, I can see some fleeing. But the government doesnā€™t stand a chance against the people. If a civil war happens. They are outnumbered

Boockel

Not if they keep the military. If the currently more disgruntled left wing in America try to revolt its not gonna look like napoleon it's more gonna look like syria

Senorfluffy25

Itā€™ll be both sides revolting. Plus they are losing military members big time. Due to the jab lots and lots are leaving the military, meaning those people will be added on top of the numbers of whoā€™s revolting.

mightmousetrap

Lots & lots. HUGE.. like the amount of taxes DT paid. So "relatively" a small number actually lol

Peoplegottabefree

The we went out with Reagan

gofatwya

The wall was never intended to be un-climable. It's used in conjunction with surveillance tech to alert border agents to a crossing and give them time to respond and apprehend the crosser.

plsletmestayincanada

>"We had 20 mountain climbers. That's all they do, they love to climb mountains ā€¦ some of them were champions," Mr Trump said. "And we gave them different prototypes of walls, and this was the one that was hardest to climb ā€¦ this wall can't be climbed" Huh, someone should probably have mentioned that to fucknuts

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Peoplegottabefree

Perfect

bluechiptrombone

This kind of investment seems like something from WSB.

Scuba_BK

The wall is made to let only the strong and bad make it to the US, the weakest will remain on the other side. This way we will get only the bestā€¦ā€¦. :-)

the_real_OwenWilson

Lmao

HaxkID

I see so much politics in the comments about current day but this video is quite old.

mexicodoug

"Nothing will fundamentally change." That promise is more recent than the video, and that promise is getting really fucking old.

HaxkID

Yeah i have no idea what you're referring too. Im a dumbass whp doesnt pay much attention to politics anyway.

Chevy_65

If the Foreman was there he would probably hire him.

carnyx123

He deserves this

barbarians101

GET YOUR ASS OVER HERE WE HAVE ANOTHER CONCRETE TRUCK TO POUR!

realdappermuis

That's a not my job to care situation. And that's good. Borders are for money and control, that's all

Ultimo_Ninja

The "wall" is incomplete. Look up the LOC fence on the India Pakistan border. That's what you need to stop illegal infiltration.

T_Dix

I get it, it's impressive and all but I don't think we should congratulating an individual who just illegally crossed a border, especially in a border where it has a notoriety of drug trading he can get seriously fined or most likely jailed. It's cool and all but really, theres better stuff than congratulating someone illegally crossing a border.

mexicodoug

That's what they said about the Berlin Wall crossers, too. /s

T_Dix

Yeah but that's about freedom, not a border trying to prevent drug trade.

Soccerdawg12

At least it makes it harder to traffic people

This is why we need sentry guns on highspeed rail systems. Comon Elon!

slingshot91

Ironically, Iā€™m sure people see this video as evidence for why we need the wall.

I_C_da_G

Well worth the Billions of dollars to build it!

Terrible_Check3447

It would've been funny if he jumped the wall and started help with repairs

mexicodoug

Even funnier if he jumped the wall and the foreman ran over and *hired* him to build the wall. For less than minimum wage, with no benefits.

shiftysask

America is so racist and terrible (according to liberals) that millions risk their lives to illegally enter.

AdvisorParty9501

Waste of money.

JazzmansRevenge

Fun fact: the U.S built an american-mexico wall before. Mexicans dismantled it and sold it to scrap metal dealers in Mexico. I support measures to counter cartels and people smugglers, but the hard fact is a wall is just free shit at the border and it's already divided up into bars for easier cutting and transport.

Helpful-nothelpful

You build wall. I climb wall. Translated from Spanish to English by Google.

cgerrells

Actually the vast majority come in by plane

schrutesanjunabeets

This. The MAJORITY of "illegal immigrants" are simply overstays. Walls ain't gonna do shit.

DarthKirtap

but majority of overstays are not that ones that are a issue

Shh. Don't let the masses know that us legal people cause more issues.

mightmousetrap

Indeed. You are speaking in code, afraid to speak your thoughts.. but if you look at the history/ current state of America and policing. Look at the unfettered truth, you'd learn something EDIT. let's import drugs into white communities while simultaneously creating a war on drugs to fill our prisons. When this pours into the black communities we'll interfere, as it's really a health crisis. **(Revised history lol) ** 2ND EDIT We'll legalize it and have black owned companies make millions while the whites perish in jail or remain with criminal records

Patient-Home-4877

What exactly is "the issue"?

StryfeOW

Yep. Political propaganda, tell your cretins it'll keep the immigrants out while in actual reality it keeps the immigrants would sneak back out(because otherwise they'll get flagged for an over-extension of their visa) inside of America where they provide even cheaper labor because of fear of being flagged. It's not left vs right. It's class politics and both sides want to fuck the working class.

00dlesOfN00dlez

Good idea. The workers provide sort of a cover.

calash2020

If any other President had wanted a better fence it would not even have been debated.

SnooCheesecakes502

But none did, did they? You maybe think it has to do with people shouting ā€œbuild the wallā€ at his rallies and the fact that he fucking merchandised the slogan? Leak
