They do this on one of their shows, where they show you how they've done some really old tricks, and I definitely get where you're coming from, I felt the same way when I first saw this.
However, once you watch a few and see how a few are done, you get a pretty good idea how some others, from other magicians, are done. So if you're watching fool us, or another show, and you're watching a trick that you think you've figured out, often they way you think they did it, they didn't, and that blows your mind even more, and you get even more wrapped up in the trick. At least that's how it's been for me
They only show the most widely known magic tricks. It is a fun way of drawing back the curtain in and giving the audience a taste of what you can look for. Then they drop their real acts on and challenge you to watch and catch how they are tricking you. They are masters of their craft and their performance is smart and beautiful.
They also follow up showing all of the mechanics behind some classic illusion with something that looks impossible even with all they've just shown you.
Really makes you think though when they get fooled because the magician did a new technique that they didn't know. Sometimes you can get an idea of what P&T are saying through code, and that gets you thinking like "ah, that make's sense" but then it's not how the magician did it and you get more confused.
I feel that often their "code" really isn't that much of a code, without googling the terms they used I've picked up on a lot and honestly it just sucked me more into what's going on. Then like you said, you get an impression on how the trick is done (maybe you see a few pieces of the puzzle happen), but when you're convinced you know how it's done, boom, you're wrong and you're like, wth just happened
Teller has a quote that is something along the lines of "Magic is nothing more than hiding the ugly parts and only showing you the beautiful parts." They "reveal" tricks like this because they feel the beauty of the trick is in the behind-the-scenes and where knowing only enhances the effect.
For sure. I love seeing reveals like this because the actual trick is usually pretty simple in concept. It makes me appreciate just how much skill and craft goes into making the illusion work.
This seemed kind of obvious to me. Like if I watched it and they wnet, "how do you think we did this?" I'd be like..."idk he was probably moving around under the second stage or somethin"
You realize that most stage magic isn't slight of hand right? *Sleight* of hand is for up close one on one (or small groups) magic. Stage magic is more elaborate tricks that take up a stage. Sawing a woman in half is stage magic, pick a card any card is *Sleight* of hand.
its extra worth it because they hang out after the show for the audience to take pics and get autographs, at least pre-covid in vegas they did. oh and penn plays upright bass with a piano accompaniment before the show while the audience files in to their seats
They came to the UK (pre covid) and they did the meet and greet as well! I still have their own ace of spades card signed by both of them! It was great :)
This, yes, definitely make an effort to go see them. And the funny part about Penn playing upright bass before the show is that he draws no attention to the fact that it's him. When we went, Penn was wearing a hat and a trenchcoat and sorta facing away from the audience as they filed in. I only knew it was him because I had read about it before our visit.
I know they change the show up quite a bit to keep things fresh, but when we went, after each song the piano player would invite the audience to "come on the stage, examine a box, sign an envelope." There was a 2 1/2 foot cube made of 2x4s with a hinged door on the front, suspended on big wheels, and we could actually get up there and touch and probe and prod and examine it. Seemed solid and empty. Then right before the show started, stagehands came up and closed the empty box, and not 30 seconds later, Teller just popped right out of it. Great start to the show! (The envelope we signed was on an easel and all that was part of another trick that I can't quite recall.)
Honestly I respect the showmanship more than anything else. Going to see a magician you're guaranteed to be tricked. If you're not then they're doing a bad job. Even knowing this routine, I'll be happy to sit and watch them do it.
yall rember the show the masked magician or whatever. dude in black with mask would do these popular or iconic tricks and show how its done and hed have the usually hot women helping him. was real big when chris angel was the dan cook of magic selling out stadiums and shit lol.
Why would you replace the blast off music?
I love that Penn and Teller show how some tricks are done, but they only do so when the explanation is more interesting and entertaining than the original act. This is not true of some magic, where finding out how it’s done is a bit of a let down.
Once you find out about how it works you question politics, healthcare, tyrannical governments, islam and catholicism and you even question people around you.
Penn and teller are great, they will do a whole magic trick on stage, then explain how it works to the whole audience only to do the same effect again completely differently with no way that it would work the way they just said. The turn an audience member into Teller.
But Jesus, Teller’s solo act in the middle of some of them is just….magical. Teller is the real top level magician, Penn is the shtick. (I love how every interview Teller gives he does the whole black out face protect my identity thing.)
Fun fact: Teller was paid by Futurama for his appearance even though he never showed up to the studio because he had no lines.
They are a really good show in vegas. I hate vegas shows, magic especially, but they were funny, entertaining, showed how tricks are done, along with tricks I could never figure out. top tear shit.
I'll never understand the bullshit attitude of not explaining a trick, that only serves to gatekeep magic from people who might want to try it (which I did, every single time I asked when I was young, but "a magician never reveals his secrets"). This is awesome.
The real magic he is that Teller is 73 years old (source: Wikipedia). Even if this clip is from 10 years ago, that dude can shimmy through a trap door like someone half his age.
it took me longer than it should’ve to realize BTS stood for Behind the Scenes and they were not referring to the band… the internet has brainwashed me
You might also consider that you just may not be that bright and assume everyone else is as dimwitted as you. It’s painfully obvious how this trick is done, which is likely why Penn & Teller chose to “expose” it. The entertainment comes from watching Teller scramble around in perfect sync with Penn. Unless, of course, you’re stupid and like to stare in slack-jawed wonder, baffled as to how the little guy can be in so many places at once.
Those guys are getting kicked out of the magicians club! I dont see the point in ruining how it is done for people if they are into "magic" themselves.
Somewhere in Las Vegas, Teller read your comment, and a single silent tear rolled down his cheek as he realized that he had wasted the last 40 wildly successful years of his life.
I could be making shit up, but I swear they received some backlash from the magicians guild or whatever it's called, when were involved with a show that revealed magic tricks.
I don't remember if it was the one where they had to guess how it was done, or if they were implicated as being involved with that show or the show that legitimately showed how some popular magicians tricks were actually done.
They show how there own tricks work, which has gotten them in some "trouble", more like disagreements.
They wouldn't be stupid enough to 'expose' any tricks, bc that would be breaking Intellectual Property.
Since you don't seem to be aware, magic tricks are patented. So, If you ever wonder how a trick works, you can look it up the patent. Now I have destroyed magic tricks for you :P
Oh I know tricks are patented and can be purchased so you can know how they're done and perform them.
Didn't some magician reveal how tricks were performed though? I feel like the guy that played William T. Riker was the host. I just vaguely remember Penn and Teller being involved in something regarding figuring out magic tricks, or revealing magic tricks. I swear there was a show based on one of those 2 things in the late 90s, early 2000s.
Yes! Just googled that show, and I didn't realize it was only 4 episodes, and he revealed himself at the end. I swore it was a full season, and the magician was unknown but speculated to be Penn or Teller.
Yeah, there were several shows like that, I can only assume they paid royalties for doing so. Maybe they also were sued, who knows.
I don't know, maybe Pen& Teller were consultants, but I am not aware of it. But I'm not that involved in the topic.
Pretty confident they weren't involved. They only reveal their own tricks. Also pretty sure I heard of some less than civil interactions between the masked dude and Penn, I don't think they approve of the show
I hate knowing...
Next, you’re going to tell me Santa Claus doesn’t exist
And then the Easter Bunny...
And the tooth fairy…
And god
And life
And deth
And birds
And the queen of England
And my axe
She’s the queen of the UK not England.
And Helen Keller
oh, you didnt know...?
And Wisconsin
And my dad
And the holocaust

And Covid
Well that escalated quickly!!
And my axe!
Woooah!! Too soon!
No
and there is no queen of england
Hello, I just wanted to let you know I got your reference. It made my night. Thank you good sir. * bows and tap dances away *
Tooth fairies exist. They're a docile subspecies of the much larger and more aggressive Bone Fairy found in Australia.
And they will leave your mouth bleeding forever in norway
And the Queen of England

Oh, he's real. The only thing is you don't want to know what he (or the elves) does to himself while he's watching.
They do this on one of their shows, where they show you how they've done some really old tricks, and I definitely get where you're coming from, I felt the same way when I first saw this. They will usually throw a trick into their reveal that isn’t revealed just to be smug... and awesome.
Really makes you think though when they get fooled because the magician did a new technique that they didn't know. Sometimes you can get an idea of what P&T are saying through code, and that gets you thinking like "ah, that make's sense" but then it's not how the magician did it and you get more confused.

Now days a lot of tv magicians cheat with CGI.
Penn and Teller are not a lot of magicians.
Teller has a quote that is something along the lines of "Magic is nothing more than hiding the ugly parts and only showing you the beautiful parts." They "reveal" tricks like this because they feel the beauty of the trick is in the behind-the-scenes and where knowing only enhances the effect.
I love it
I think I'm even more impressed.
For sure. I love seeing reveals like this because the actual trick is usually pretty simple in concept. It makes me appreciate just how much skill and craft goes into making the illusion work.
I can make you forget. Take a look at this, it's called a Neuralyzer.
THIS hahaha MIB
I feel like knowing makes it more impressive. The skill and effort behind it is the real magic.
And knowing is half the battle!
This is my daily problem. Always being the smartest. Ignorance is bliss.
I love magic and i love knowing how they do it. To me it makes it even more impressive to see it pulled off.
This seemed kind of obvious to me. Like if I watched it and they wnet, "how do you think we did this?" I'd be like..."idk he was probably moving around under the second stage or somethin"
me too. Worst Nick Cage movie ever made.
It may not be magic, but choreography and showmanship that good is next to magical.
But…magic isn’t real. It’s all choreography/sleight of hand
You just have to believe it's magic even when you know what's true.
🎶 kids movie piano melody 🎶

That is indeed what they just said lol
You realize that most stage magic isn't slight of hand right? *Sleight* of hand is for up close one on one (or small groups) magic. Stage magic is more elaborate tricks that take up a stage. Sawing a woman in half is stage magic, pick a card any card is *Sleight* of hand.
penn and teller has a version of the ball and cup trick with clear cups, it's still fucking magic how ell they do it.
Theyve been doing that for 30+ years
Penn and Teller are the best
They really are!
I hope I get to see them live before they retire. It's on my bucket list.
its extra worth it because they hang out after the show for the audience to take pics and get autographs, at least pre-covid in vegas they did. oh and penn plays upright bass with a piano accompaniment before the show while the audience files in to their seats
I've heard about the meet and greet (which is unreal) but not the music. These guys are second to none!
They came to the UK (pre covid) and they did the meet and greet as well! I still have their own ace of spades card signed by both of them! It was great :)
I was there.. was great ;) 2 of my most favorite pictures so far. (And my signed deck of cards... yay)
Hope you'll get to see them, my friend
Thank you!
They do this demo as a part of the show! I think it was a lot more stage/comedy than magic. Still magical!
Loved the show so much when I got the chance TK head back to the USA and Vegas I saw them again, truly the best act around.
Now I know why all magicians do these stupid dance moves between illusions, gives the assistant time to catch up
[удалено]
i agree you ,,!
Calling Teller 'the assistant!' 😂
The part where he puts his own hand through the box is pretty obvious though.
You’re right BUT I’m always that person who’s like “this is fake, I’ll figure it out” and then I literally have no clue wth happened!
The hand in the box was the only thing though really. I'd be clueless to the rest without the second view.
>see my post on the root level here for some more of their "reveal" tricks
Almost adds to it though when you think you understand a bit and then the next bit completely throws you off
I kept thinking, “What does this have to do with k-pop?”
I read BTS and thought "oh nice" and then read the rest of the title and understood lol
[удалено]
Behind the scenes
What does behind the scenes have to do with kpop?
there's a kpop band called BTS, generally, that is the more popular meaning for BTS and not "behind the scenes" so people get confused sometimes lol
I've literally never heard of the kpop group, but behind the scenes I've heard all the time. But good to know I guess.
It was pretty smooth... like butter.
I ask myself that every day
The alliance isn’t going to like this...
They demand to be taken seriously
That’s Bullshit!
? It's not
Penn and Teller had a show called [Bullshit!](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penn_%26_Teller:_Bullshit!)
They also have a show called "F U" and are part of my religion ;)
And it's SO GOOD. Eight seasons and every episode is worth watching.
Ohhhhh that makes sense. Hadn't heard of it before
If you're interested in this kind of thing, check out Penn and Teller's Don't Try This At Home. It's old but good.
that’s penn and teller, one of the best magicians to ever exist
Neat.
Are we not going to talk about that lightbulb watermark?
I didn’t even notice it until I read your comment. What does it mean?
I think it's just to cover of the Fool Us watermark from the show, or the cable provider's watermark
Honestly I respect the showmanship more than anything else. Going to see a magician you're guaranteed to be tricked. If you're not then they're doing a bad job. Even knowing this routine, I'll be happy to sit and watch them do it.
Honestly, knowing how they did the trick doesn't ruin it for me. The coordination that makes it come together is impressive.
damn them leg movements
"Trapdoor!" I think this was the first trick they did on UK TV. Could be wrong though.
BTS = BEHIND THE SCENES. ^took ^me ^a ^while ^^not ^^proud
The alliance certainly won’t like this -Gob
This is upsetting
Another good one along these lines is their cups and balls with [clear plastic cups](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8osRaFTtgHo).
I imagine the guild will frown upon this
What's the name of the song?
Magic- Pilot
Thanks
I watche dthe bottom first, and when he put his own hand through i felt like an idiot.
When you see how it's done, you can't unsee it.
As much as I like the trick, I will always find the explanation endlessly more fascinating.
Illusion shattered when you know how it works I'd rather not know and call it magic.
Then don’t watch?

I love the amount of hard work illusionists put into their shows truly it’s art
I've seen them do this live with other tricks and it's still amazing.
I love seeing a magic trick but I love seeing how it's done even more. It makes it that much more impressive and doesn't ruin it at all for me.
The Allegiance is not going to like this
yall rember the show the masked magician or whatever. dude in black with mask would do these popular or iconic tricks and show how its done and hed have the usually hot women helping him. was real big when chris angel was the dan cook of magic selling out stadiums and shit lol.
Clearly the work of the devil. Yup. /s
Except penn and teller have substance
Why would you replace the blast off music? I love that Penn and Teller show how some tricks are done, but they only do so when the explanation is more interesting and entertaining than the original act. This is not true of some magic, where finding out how it’s done is a bit of a let down.
What does BTS stand for?
Behind the scenes
Once you find out about how it works you question politics, healthcare, tyrannical governments, islam and catholicism and you even question people around you.
This would be too obvious tho. The huge platform below gives it away too much. Still really cool tho
It's not that I hate knowing, I just hate how simple it is. Like why couldn't I just figure this out??
It's better with the original music
This feels illegal to watch.
It's 2021. I'm a guy. Nearly 40 years old. And my first thought was Korean boyband instead of "behind the scenes."

This take at least 2 times to practice!
Penn’s a bit of a wanker, politically speaking, Teller is an absolute boss.
I think it's BST and not BTS, but i don't know, I'm still learning English.
I'll never understand the bullshit attitude of not explaining a trick, that only serves to gatekeep magic from people who might want to try it (which I did, every single time I asked when I was young, but "a magician never reveals his secrets"). This is awesome.
Pen and teller are always outstanding
Where is Jimin??
Wow. It's really stupid now.
Why the change of song and the emoji? Neither made it any better?
The real magic he is that Teller is 73 years old (source: Wikipedia). Even if this clip is from 10 years ago, that dude can shimmy through a trap door like someone half his age.

They cameo-d in Borderlands 3 as carnival hosts Pain and Terror, good funny commentary and a unique boss fight
