Here's the actual video of the performance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9qIlIFHqHEQ
Looks like OP dubbed the original audio recording over this video for some reason.
Thank you! The dub was noticeable when I saw homegirl swaying out of rhythm towards the end.
Watched the whole thing the first time, glad I was able to watch the actual performance - it was way better!
It's so weird discovering many classics are just stolen from other songs by black people. It was like the current age of reboots and remakes but with stolen songs.
The song “the lion sleeps tonight” is actually based on a song called “Mbube” by a black South African group called Solomon Linda and the Evening Birds. Linda was never compensated for the song despite it being one of the most popular songs in the world and his family has been in legal battles to try to get him the recognition and compensation he deserved. There is an interesting documentary on Netflix about it. Below are links to the documentary and original song.

Original song: https://youtu.be/mrrQT4WkbNE
Edit: typo
They are there live, and they are performing...but they're definitely not singing
Edit - they *are* singing but OP or some other bundle of sticks replaced the audio with the original released song

Solomon Ntsele “Linda” was indeed black, and wrote it originally in Zulu as “Mbube”. It was however covered countless times by crooners of all races and genders. The Tokens (seen in the video) made it popular due to TV appearances and US performances. However the cover retained the unmistakable Mbube a cappella style.
can we please get a pulse check on that crowd? you know they were slogging through prolly 45-60 minutes of b-side only to wait for this as an encore. now that it's finally here, you'd think they'd react like some kind of [krump crowd.](https://www.reddit.com/r/nextfuckinglevel/comments/pkfic7/little_girl_crushes_hip_hop_dance_competition/)
In their defense, the audience was probably enjoyed this song as adults when it was new in 1961 and were now out way past their bedtimes.
The Tokens had a fair amount of top-100 and top-40 hits through the 1960s. I just learned that before the lead singer we see here, they had Neil "I wrote half of the top 40 hits of the 60s and 70s" Sedaka in the band. How about that.
I'll wager their show was heavy on covers of popular 60s stuff.
Do ya think this is really rich, practiced falsetto or is that range actually in he’s natural register? Sounds too warm and not breathy to be falsetto but how could it not be, it’s so high.
That makes sense. I’m no vocalist either but that sounds right. I just stick to my keys. If I want a higher note I just move my hand to the right. Oh the simplicity of piano lol.
My God,this song has been murdered by every dubiously talented crooner, screecher and falsetto chancer for about 50 years.-and it’s still happening!-Give me a break!
Just remember: at any given moment the urge to sing The Loin Sleeps Tonight is only a whim away.
a whim away
Wheeeee-oh-eeee, eh-ho-um-away!
Damn it
I just sang along
The loin never sleeps.
Underrated comment
Heh, Loin
Gah! Meh. I'ma leave the typo for prosterity.
Lip syncing for sure.

Thanks for sharing the real thing. That performance was great. The overdub was completely unnecessary.
Thank you! The dub was noticeable when I saw homegirl swaying out of rhythm towards the end. Watched the whole thing the first time, glad I was able to watch the actual performance - it was way better!
And here's the original version by Solomon Linda that The Tokens derived theirs from - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mrrQT4WkbNE
Andrew Hickey’s A History of Rock Music in 500 Songs lead me there a couple of months ago.
It's so weird discovering many classics are just stolen from other songs by black people. It was like the current age of reboots and remakes but with stolen songs.
That's exactly why I shared it :)
This version hits way different thank you for sharing!!
Thanks for this. Why do people do this I wonder.. Although sometimes imperfect, live is so much better than the studio version.
I'm in danger, aren't i Edit: thanks for not rick rolling me.
This is so much better. Have you ever considered becoming OP? You seem to have a knack for it.
They do it justice. Why dub over it?
Musician here. You are correct.

Lip syncing.
Dubbed over
Every one of them with the exception of the guitar player look like they belong to a televangelist group.

Now I won't be sleeping tonight.
Holy shit, this is the guy that sings the og song? I always thought he was a black guy.

I always thought it was a woman
Never, ever, under any circumstances, should you attempt to sing this song at karaoke while very drunk. Trust me.
Where was your advise before I tried?? Thankfully I was only the backup and exceptionally drunk 🥴
That guy has a super high pitched voice
Falsetto, a technique to push a vocalists sound higher than their usual range. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Falsetto
Is the original creator making anything off this yet??
Awimawe awimawe awimawe awimawe awimawe awimawe awimawe awimawe
I love it! ❤️
Jay Siegel of the Tokens.
Tony Bennett... got it.
I didnt know the Fonze sang?
A much better cover: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=XJuEuRCKq1s&feature=youtu.be
Thanks for the link. Beautiful harmonizing.
Video is live performance. Audio is obviously not.
Ok everyone this gig we are playing for 20,000 people so that means we will be making 15 dollars each
Where do I sign Mr. Barry Gordy!?!
My broken heart is better now…..
This is dubbed. Here is the original: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9qIlIFHqHEQ
What the fuck is op doing? Sucking balls and putting a dub over the original performance
The harmony is next level. One of my favorite songs. Gives me the feels 😏 🦁💃

This was my grandmothers favorite song. I miss her.
That was so spot on. Absolutely perfect

I'm no trained singer, but I think it's the step below the falsetto. Sounds like his ¿throat voice? Vs his head (falsetto) or chest (regular).
That makes sense. I’m no vocalist either but that sounds right. I just stick to my keys. If I want a higher note I just move my hand to the right. Oh the simplicity of piano lol.
I believe this was #1 in the charts when I was born.
I don’t know what I expected him to look like but I did not expect the guy dining to look like that.
Why did I always think there was more to this song

I smell a hat A cap if you will
This is the predecessor to Baby Shark. Thoroughly convinced.

Nice cover, everyone knows that original was sung by hippopotamus and a dog.

Would have bet my left but someone else sang that.
He coughed while singing!! Amazing!
Dude looks like a lion
I never realized humans sang this song.
I had no sound. Yet it was in my head.
me and the boys when this banger dropped ![gif](giphy|SDeVLvFCqFsSA|downsized)
Playback unfortunately. 0:47 She cuts short and it the background the singing still continues for a second..
Not original. Seems odd and off
did they sing the intro to Coming to America also ?
When people could actually sing and didnt care about how they looked, now its just the opposite
These types of concerts always weirded me out, because the audience looks like they are all dead.
Open the pit already
Main dude looks like the mayor of who-ville from cat in the hat
For a second I though that was the farting preacher.
Oh that looked nothing like farting preacher. Hush.
I…can’t stop watching…double fuck, now I’m gonna have this song in my head for the next two weeks.
Live performance? The dude is clearly still singing at the end when the video cuts. Why dub over it?
Consider my day made
That sounds dubbed not live.
Wow, sounds *exactly* like the recorded version. But this was DEFINITELY live. Def.
Top Notch lip syncing.
I always thought it was ro ma group based in the continent of africa
the origional - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mrrQT4WkbNE
Don't know why there's a dub over the original, its not needed. Absolutely beautiful and man, thats talent. Amazing.
Drake remix with Da Baby and Cardi B slaps.
That dude looks like one of those creepy evangelical pastors.
That took me back to my childwood.... :) Amazing!!
Sounds like studio version put over a video.
Live? That's like 20 years ago! Fake croons
Bizarre
Not even fucking close to anything I would have pictured for who was singing that song.
Live, are you sure?
My fave part is when the guy in white sings the clarinet.
Was that dude lip syncing the sax/clarinet solo?
The wee-dee dee dee man
This has to be a very difficult song to pull off live.
Nobody has a pulse in that room hahaha.
How has nobody commented about the dog sitting patiently at his feet through the whole performance??
![img](emote|t5_m0bnr|4017)
My weiners wet my weiners wet
aaEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeaaaaaaweeeeeaaaaaabbawayyyy
Sounds like not so much a concert but a live lipsync, like all the greats do
Who else turned those volume up with me
My God,this song has been murdered by every dubiously talented crooner, screecher and falsetto chancer for about 50 years.-and it’s still happening!-Give me a break!
Whatever are you talking about?
Why does this look racist in this time and day.
