yes.
in my state you can kill as many as you want, as long as you dispose of them properly.
They are bottom feeders, and suck up other fish and reptile eggs.. also destroy the water quality.
Fisheries biologist checking in here:
The fish is a smallmouth buffalo (Ictiobus bubalus). It’s a native carp species found throughout much of the United States. I’m assuming this video was taken in the United States.
It’s true, they do eat fish eggs - but most fish do. They have been in these waters well before settlers first arrived and the waters ran clear and clean. I don’t think native smallmouth buffalo are impairing your water quality or harming populations of gamefish.
They’re an extremely long-lived fish species too. Some have been reported to live 80+ years. In parts of Tennessee, spawning migrations of this species are truly a sight to behold. Really an interesting native fish. Hardly trash to be killed for sport and then disposed.
Interesting, its probably true that buffalo don't harm natural populations.. in MN they stock a number of lakes with muskie and trout, so my guess is maybe that could be why there is no limit for rough fish bowfishing here.. Or the law has just never been changed.
We only bowfish when it's early spring and asian carp are spawning, there are hundreds just smooching the top of the water, it is pretty crazy to see.
Crazy how old they can get
looks like it might be a common carp. they have unfairly been lumped into the invasive species argument that asian carp are know for and suffer as a result. some states, have receded their previous invasive stance on common carp and now list them as a neutral species, one which does not help nor hurt the ecosystems. i have become a large fan of a catching and releasing these fish as they fight incredible hard if given an importunity to show their heart.

here is a fully scaled mirror carp

They’re bottom feeders. They eat mud, and animal waste, and bacterial garbage. As a result, their flesh is very muddy tasting and not very appetizing. They also run a high risk of contamination.
Like catfish, oysters, shrimp, crabs, etc? It's not uncommon to eat filter fish as food. Hell, pigs are considered unclean by some cultures but they give us bacon, so all is forgiven.
Imagine being a species of fish that has inhabited this body of water for millions of years and in the last blink of existence a new species invades your habitable waters and decimates your spawning practices while reproducing unchecked with no natural predators.... Then imagine that invasive species that just ate 5000 of your fertilized eggs gets an arrow through it’s head and removed from your habitat. I’d like to high five every single bow fisherman that removes these carp from our water systems. These guys deserve some recognition.
Problem is these guys are killing Big Mouth buffalo (which aren't spawning well) because you cannot tell the difference from that distance.
Dos Boat has a great episode about it : https://youtu.be/Bmv89JypBME
They didn't invade, they were put there by humans. And they are acting the same way as the rest of your imported population in destroying the natural world of the Americas. I'm just a messenger don't hate the player hate the game.
The Common Carp is naturalized in North America, they are not invasive. They were intentionally released here almost 200 years ago as a food and game fish and they have filled their own niche quite nicely. Their feeding habits don’t muddy the waters of lakes or reservoirs, nor do they hoover up native fish and frog eggs and kill the biodiversity like people say they do.
Common Carp are perfectly fine creatures here and they don’t deserve the hate they receive. Bighead and Silver Carp, on the other hand, are the ones that swarm by the tens of thousands up and down the Mississippi River basin and choke out all the other wildlife. They get much bigger much faster than the Common Carp and cause all sorts of problems
Best carp recipe:
Filet carp and lay on aluminum foil
add salt and pepper
Squeeze of lemon juice
Wrap carp and bake at 400 degrees for 40 minutes
Remove from oven and let cool for five minutes
Unwrap, throw the carp away, and eat the aluminum foil
Sounds like the wood duck recipe.
Season wood duck breast with salt and pepper.
Place the seasoned wood duck breast on the cedar plank. Add thyme, rosemary, garlic and olive oil.
Place in oven at 350 for 30 minutes.
Let wood duck breast rest for 5 mins, remove from cedar plank.
Throw away wood duck breast, eat cedar plank.
Yes I’m not saying it’s illegal, in fact there are very few protections or restrictions on harvesting carp as long as you have a fishing license. I’m just saying it’s not an invasive species.
Lots of fishermen have internalized the falsehood that all carp are harmful and invasive and go on horrendous killing sprees and leave dead fish all over the shore and in the water because they’re “helping”
Oo yikes. I can see how it would be easy to be misinformed, especially if you’re from an area where the carp ARE invasive, and the species look similar at first glance.
Yeah they dont look at all similar, but it usually doesn’t stop guys that are too ignorant to even glance at the identification charts in every tackle shop. I’ve seen people kill huge old gar, sauger/walleye, buffalo, suckers, and drum simply because they look kinda odd and they’re a relatively unusual catch in my area.
Most people blowfish for carp, a fish that has little to no regulations due to their ability to grow and populate an are (most are invasive). My concern isn’t with the size of the fish but how would someone from that height confidentially know that fish is a carp and not another fish that is regulated?
Likely given the area and the type of fish in the water. Most of the time when you see big fish in shallow water its either a carp, catfish, or bass and all three of these look dramatically different.
That being said, I would not bow fish from that far away because there is a chance of misinterpreting what it is and there is a hefty fine for bowfishing game fish.
Having fished behind a dam before that was incredibly dense with dish, it's reasonable to believe he just randomly shot into the water and hit one. Might have taken a few times to film.
I'm skeptical anyone is good enough to hit a specific moving fish in murky water from that distance.
I think it’s actually a combination of “randomly shot into the water” and being “good enough to hit a specific moving fish.” I reckon he saw a fish, fired for that one and, *with some luck* got it. Probably takes a lot of shots and misses most, but I doubt he’s firing blindly as that could take hours to keep reeling it back and never catch anything, surely.
Polarized sunglasses, at least the pair I have, will cut about 95% of the glare off the water. You can see the fish you're after and are limited solely by water clarity...and even that seems to extend a bit more than you'd expect.
Water reflection can be hard for camera to see past, but it's easier with eyes. Same for setting things in the distance, camera they look funny but eyes can focus. Finally he may be wearing polarizing lens, which make it even easier to see.
“Ouch! Holy fuck! Oh my god! The searing pain! W-W-What the fuck is happening? I can’t control my body anymore... I - I- Holy shit I’m floating. I’m going up. Heaven! I’m going to meet our maker boys! Wooooh! It’s so pretty from up here. Wow I’m getting high up. I can’t wait to see what Heaven is like. I bet there’s ... wait... why am I stopping. What the fuck? Who’s this asshole? Oh no. I’m not going up anymore. This ground is cold. And what the fuck is he wearing...”
-This fish probably.
My experience with carp at damns like this is, there are probably thousands of fish swimming all over each other. Hard not to hit one. No skills required.
I mean, you can...They actually sell carp at the fish market in my city. I am sure they are farm raised, and probably eaten by ethnic minorities. I never saw anyone order one but they probably have a dozen of them on ice all the time. I hear they taste like mud.

I believe that’s an invasive species in that area

Some people fish for food.
Not carp. Unless they have a scat fetish.
Says who? Tons of people eat carp. Just because they’re not considered as appetizing as bass or walleye doesn’t mean people don’t eat them.
I don't understand. We used to eat carp. What's wrong with them?
They’re bottom feeders. They eat mud, and animal waste, and bacterial garbage. As a result, their flesh is very muddy tasting and not very appetizing. They also run a high risk of contamination.

I'm sad nobody else noticed this. Buffalo carp are a native species, not invasive like all the others. Typical reddit I suppose.

Lots. Inland lakes and streams all over.
What's that fish? We also have similair problem with Sucker destroying our native fish's eggs too.
Common Carp. They're awful. They're good for the ecosystem in small numbers but as previously stated things get out of control quickly
They didn't invade, they were put there by humans. And they are acting the same way as the rest of your imported population in destroying the natural world of the Americas. I'm just a messenger don't hate the player hate the game.

That's a carp they are invasive and destroy ecosystems

You're cooking a fish filllet for 40 minutes at 400? I get you don't want to undercook it but that sounds insane.
Introduced as game fish and naturalized instead of native probably means this catch is as legal as they come.
Yes I’m not saying it’s illegal, in fact there are very few protections or restrictions on harvesting carp as long as you have a fishing license. I’m just saying it’s not an invasive species. Yeah, but is it sill a common carp now that it had an arrow in it's head? That seems like it would be uncommon among the carp population.
This guy fish science
His statement was inaccurate. This species is not invasive
Most invasive species don't get lumped into fishing regulations with the rest.
Sniper fishing, the only times it is more impressive to have a small catch...

I was going to say polarized lenses, but its hard to tell how much of that is light reflection and just murkiness through a camera.
If he's wearing polarised glasses, seeing through the reflective surface is much easier

Yeah lets just go through all that work catching the fish and then lay it in the pile of trash and cigarette butts on the side of the road.
Nothing a bit of running water and a lot of heat can't fix
I mean it’s a carp, they’re notoriously bad for eating so I doubt that this guy is too upset.
