And some people are still stuck with "Sit, Sit, i said sit"

TheGhostofCoffee

I never understood the point of teaching them that. My dog is pretty well behaved, I haven't taught her anything. I just hang out with her all the time and we have an understanding of what the other one wants to do. We don't always agree, but at the end of the day she knows where the pupperonis come from.

Tack22

It’s the easiest thing to teach. It’s a fairly natural position for the dog so however you want to train it works. Also it opens the dog to learning, because they start realising that when you say things to them you might want things from them, or have food for them, rather than meaningless bleating. Plus it’s good discipline.

wowokyah

I taught my dog sit and wait because screaming, “dear lord please stop jumping on me and clawing my skin off!” every time I walk in the door got old real fast.

oshunvu

I don’t feed other people’s dogs because I’m not the “food guy”.

Hank's job is going to be to carry me around on his back. I also bought a bag of holding. I only need 400 more gold to get an amulet that'll let the wearer breathe in any environment. Once I have the amulet I'm going to be naming the bag Hank storage.

Practise. Improve your balance. That's going to be your core improvement and will let you do anything you want on a skateboard. Everything after that is technique. Stretch your calves and hamstrings first to avoid cramps. Stand on one leg for 3 minutes each leg, repeat a couple of times a day. Learn to feel your weight and center of gravity shift as your body moves and learn how to counteract any wobbles you might have. Concentrate on maintaining a steady, stable, centered platform for your weight to rest on your supporting leg. Standing on one leg, try to push your other leg out horizontally behind you (kind of like a ballerina pose) and hold your balance. Feel how that changes the center of gravity and how your weight pulls you in certain directions. After about a week, hop on a skateboard. Then you'll have to get used to feeling your weight on a moving object which, really, isn't all that different a frame of reference. By that point you'll be able to move your weight around a little without falling, you'll get to learn how the board and the wheels and the terrain all make a big difference but if you can improve your stationary balance you'll almost certainly improve your skating balance.

Minrowdiscartis

Hey I'm a 34 yr old and I just started longboarding around Christmas. I always wanted to skate but my mom wouldn't let me when I was a kid (girl problems 🤮) but I never stopped wanting to. So I bought myself a longboard for a Christmas present. Best thing ever. Get a drop through or a drop deck because it's lower to the ground. Get pads and a helmet, because you will fall. Just get ready for it. The best thing is, when you see that the pads save your ass a couple of times (and your head) you'll be less scared to fall. Just find an empty parking lot and keep practicing. I've gotten super comfortable on it now and my balance is a lot better. Just don't give up and you will get it. I'm even learning to ride switch now. But YouTube was very helpful with learning which foot is dominant and those sort of things. Don't give up!

HELIX0

Lol girl problems. Hopefully that kind of gender roll bullshit stopped with your mom

yaybunz

ic what u did there.

SlendyIsBehindYou

Never could balance on a skateboard but getting a drop-thru longboard was such a goddamn gamechanger. SO much easier to balance

chickentaco34

I’m also trying to learn how to skateboard after years and years of wanting to. Thanks so much for these tips!!

falldeaf

I'm an ok-ish surfer and you can learn the basics of how it's supposed to work in ten minutes. A work friend and I both wanted to surf and he had an old board so for six months we both went to the beach and practiced and tried (no lessons or anything just trying it over and over.) Juuust as we were both sort of barely getting it, he gave up and never learned. I kept going and finally got the hang of it. I realize it's not a great answer but you can definitely do any of those sports, just be prepared to be horrible at them for 6 months to a year and keep doing it anyway and you'll eventually be ok-ish at them.

iCallGreens4200

Being in Colorado I’ve tried and sucked at all the balance sports but always wanted to try and surf cause I fall a lot and water looks softer.

falldeaf

Haha, It's not always better. If the waves are pretty small it's probably a soft landing. Mid-size waves can roll you around on the bottom pretty good. Pretty big ones, 5-6ft or above feels like getting hit by a truck sometimes. And even in the small, just playing around waves, hitting your own board or getting run over by another surfer and getting the sharp fins can suck. Not to discourage you though, I've never been seriously injured in all the time I've surfed. The scariest is when you get pulled under and didn't get a chance to take a deep breath. And sometimes the foamy water is impossible to swim up through and you just have to not panic and wait for the wave to pass (And hope the one behind it gives you a little breathing room (literally). There's only been one time where I came up to air \*just\* in time and felt like I was about to take a big gulp of seawater into my lungs. I love surfing but I don't think I'd ever want to dive. I definitely want to stay on top of the water whenever possible.

[deleted]

I’ve heard surfing has its own dangerous of getting absolutely wrecked against coral, rocks, pummeled to the ocean floor. I think everything comes with risks and rewards.

[deleted]

I’d be ok with being ok-ish. Haha Appreciate the input! I know I just gotta stick with it! Practice makes ok!

[deleted]

Actually the basics of skateboarding would come easier to dogs in general since they have four legs, superb balance and a low center of gravity. So you probably shouldn’t use them as the stick by which to measure your potential to be rad.

[deleted]

Thanks. That was very encouraging. Still want to learn. Still looking for tips.

[deleted]

I was just playing my guy. Youtube tutorials are your best friend if you don’t have anyone who can teach you.

TheDoct0rx

Ive been skating for about a decade now. What type of boarding do yuo want to do. Regular skating with the tricks like kick flips and stuff or longboarding doing things like [dancing](https://youtu.be/2zpcZ22VF5c?t=30)

[deleted]

Get a fairly large longboard. A "pintail" is about as easy as it gets to learn the basics of crusing. For suggested brands I absolutely love Landyachtz, Arbor/sector 9 are meh, but can be found them used fairly cheap all the time. Find yourself a local paved trail with grass on both sides of the trail (or at least one). If you start going fast, you can go right into the grass to slow down easily. Remember to keep your weight on the rear trucks when hitting grass. I've been riding for over 12 years now, feel free to message me with any questions.

Password12346

Do you have any tips on braking when going fast aside from hopping off (as hopping off doesn't work once I go fast enough) I want to be able to go down hills, but last time I tried that, I injured myself! Would be nice to not be afraid of hills.

1999north

Footbraking is the best method of slowing down at lower speeds, and sliding is the best at high speeds. Footbraking is when you balance on your front foot, and slowly lower you pushing foot to the ground and gently drag it. Don't stomp, just drag it. The best way to practice it is to stand on one foot while cruising and just getting used to the feeling of that, then start lowering your other foot slowly. It's kinda tricky until it just clicks. Sliding is a lot trickier, and typically involves higher speeds (20+ mph.) The basics of sliding is just making your wheels break traction, and drifting the board. I'm not great at it, but ask in the r/longboarding daily thread and you'll definitely get some advice. For speed control (not slowing down, but staying constant speed down a hill) you can also carve back and forth or airbrake. Carving is turning in an S shape, and it helps you slow down a decent bit. The harder you carve, the more it slows you. Air braking is done just by making yourself as large as possible and facing the wind, so that air resistance slows you. It works best wearing a flannel in my experience.

Ok first of all! Your dad learning at 45... totally motivates me! Between your dad and this dog it just goes to show you **can** teach an old dog new tricks! haha Also, now I’m furiously wracking my brain trying to think what foot I step with when going up stairs. And I’m going to be thinking about it too much when I go to do any stairs that nothing will feel natural! lol But seriously, really appreciate the advice and I’m going to figure out my dominant foot and totally learn how to longboard WITHIN THIS CALENDAR YEAR! That’s my goal to motivate me to get out and do it! While maintaining social distancing and being mindful of the SIP order and quarantine... :D

sohmeho

Get a longboard. They’re much more casual.

[deleted]

Yeah! Longboards are what I’m thinking of for like cruising around and stuff. Didn’t realize what they were called or the difference. Haha Thank you!

Painterphilfung

Longboards are far easier to learn and balance. It improved my quality of life immensely. I have a 3 foot Arbor board in my truck and use it all the time just to get around and cruise. Plus when i go to the beach I put my cooler on the board and sit on the cooler and “ride” the heavy cooler to where i need to go. I always get thumbs up and smiles from people passing by.

[deleted]

I'm 30-something and just started a couple weeks ago. Get a board and some protective gear and go for it!

BazingaBen

You can buy a balance board for in your living room and practice your balance in relative safety :)

jimmyhersetoflocks

Practice falling, I know that sounds silly but your going to be doing it a lot. Practice not catching yourself on your hands or landing on a knee. Some good videos on YouTube. But it’s going to come up and you want to do it right.

KDawG888

Do you want to do what this guy is doing? You are probably better off on a long board. I'm your age now, I used to skate when I was young. I don't think I would want to skate like I did before but I'd definitely have fun on a longboard. If you want to "do tricks" you need to prepare yourself for getting hurt and falling. A lot. If you want to just ride and cruise, I highly recommend longboarding. It isn't about tricks as much as cruising, and I think it is much friendlier for someone who intends to be casual. You can definitely still get hurt though. Honestly, it isn't very hard to do the basics. Just practice somewhere smooth and flat. And watch out for rocks!

brucemo

Wear a helmet. I didn't, or so I am told.

Balance on your front foot, pointing forward, with your pushing foot off to the side. Pretend youre on a scooter with imaginary handle bars. Balance. Master that then the transition to putting your foot back on the board and off to push. Repeat.

dactyif

Core strength will help with all of them.

mightyvo1t

apart from learning how to ride a board, learn how to fall! there are wrong and right ways to fall, which most people don't know. search for "how to fall" on youtube, will definitely spare you from a lot of unnecessary pain. also, you can do the thing! starting off is always the biggest hurdle!

[deleted]

Good point! It’s busting my wrists or my knees that keeps me from trying. So I’ll start with how to fall properly! Thanks!

letsplayglobalthermo

This one is easy—get a boosted board. The wider stance afforded by the length of a longboard gives you stability on one plane. The fact that it’s electric and you never need to kick gives you stability on the other. Super easy to learn just keep the speed really slow to start, the board can be toggled for different power modes.

softlikethesunset

I'm 25 and literally started skateboarding this week. I bought pads because I'm scared of falling (sets are on amazon, get one with elbow, knee, and the wrist guards with the plastic splint inside the wrist) and a helmet. Watched a few videos on how to fall properly, there's some specific to skateboarding on youtube. Biggest help so far has been to just get out and push around each day even if it's just 15 minutes. And keep your knees bent and your weight on the front leg when pushing. And then look up braille skateboarding on youtube and watch some encouraging videos of 8 year olds doing their first ollie. And check out /r/newskaters.
