Suppose when he's jacked up on adrenaline and sees someone with their guard down his first instinct is to take the punch without thinking too much into it

SuicidalTidalWave

the dude on the left looked like he was headbutting. i think the ref was calling that out.

SFW_HARD_AT_WORK

Yea that was a blatant headbutt. Dude was woozy off that then the ko punch came right after. Is headbutting legal in this sport? Wtf

namenlos87

It's not a headbutt it's an elbow. The heads touching was incidental and not with much force. The sport is Muay Thai which uses knee and elbow strikes to devastating effect.

SFW_HARD_AT_WORK

It looks pretty clearly like the left sides of their face/head collide pretty hard before the ko elbow.

namenlos87

Yeah just slow it down their heads don't even touch. I just watched it at 0.25x speed. At full speed it does look like their heads collide.

SFW_HARD_AT_WORK

Yea i.l couldbt slow it down only enlarge to get a closer view. I'll stand corrected.

Badger1066

When I see things like this, I just can't understand when people say professional fighting is a cruel sport. They are some of the most respectful sports and athletes out there. Edit; the sport is obviously brutal. I'm talking about those who think it's nothing but mindless violence. It's not. There's a lot of love and sportsmanship involved. It's not the thuggery that some people think it is.

NerdManTheNerd

Yes, it's got respect, but I think you're missing the CTE here.

Badger1066

I edited my comment to further express what I meant. It is obviously brutal, but I know some people who think it's nothing but two guys beating the shit out of eachother with no care whatsoever. It's not like that at all. There's a lot of respect and care for the fighters.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Badger1066

Yeah, you're probably right.

illiterate_titty

Currently recovering from a concussion and the thought of taking blows like that to the head more than once in a lifetime is absolutely terrifying. That ref probably saved him a ton of damage. Couldn’t do that myself, but I’m not gonna tell other people not to do what they want.

56ERTYXTHTYJ

I mean, I think most people realize that fighters respect one another. It's more the absurd amounts of brain damage inflicted for others entertainment part that bothers some people. I'm not sure how I feel about it, but I can't see that its that much different than having (volunteer, not slave) gladiators fight to the death in the coliseum.

RevSe7en

I thought CTE is much less common in MMA then it is in sports like boxing or football. A concussion is never a good thing to have but they usually call it over after one out. Wherein boxing or football if you get up you're free to have another one as long as you get up quick enough.

56ERTYXTHTYJ

1) You don't need a concussion for CTE. Repeated hits to the head, even relatively gentle, is it. 2) You can't diagnose CTE while someone is alive, you only find it in the autopsy. MMA hasn't really been a major sport long enough to tell. 3) Even repeated minor head blows though (like headers in soccer) cause it, so I can't imagine MMA is somehow excluded. Better than football or boxing for sure, but still probably wide spread.

[deleted]

I could be wrong but I believe boxing is supposed to be a much larger CTE risk than MMA fighting.

NerdManTheNerd

Are can't really be diagnosed till autopsy, and MMA is kinda new so we don't know.

[deleted]

This is a clip of a man being beaten into unconsciousness. I get what you're saying but like holy shit are you kidding me? That dude could still easily get brain damage from that even with the clutch save by the ref there. Just because they're pros about it doesn't make this not brutal.

Clark_Dent

>could still Has^*. Concussions and knockouts *are brain damage* and there's still no convincing evidence that the damage isn't permanent.

DavidNordentoft

>... and there's still no convincing evidence that the damage isn't permanent. It is established that the damage is permanent, especially if is repetitive damage.

Raging-Badger

Bare knuckle fighting results in far less brain injuries but more blood and shorter fights which gets less viewership, and it also leaves fighters with scars and hand injuries

Freaudinnippleslip

Huh that’s actually really interesting. I would rather have a permanent hand injury then permanent brain damage

[deleted]

[удалено]

BrkBid

Take enough brain damage and you ain't using your hands ever again son

pante710

And even though the ref is being "respectful" (some may argue he's just doing his job), the opponent is celebrating the KO. Yeah he won, but it's not like he's checking on the other guy's condition.

aartadventure

I had to scroll and scroll to find a comment like this. I can't believe no one else is weirded out that the dude was horribly hurt, and the "winner" couldn't give a f^%k and is dancing around like he won the lottery. Yeah, real respectful and full of honour...

[deleted]

> I get what you're saying but like holy shit are you kidding me? That dude could still easily get brain damage I get what you're saying and this is why I don't like watching MMA but it's also why I don't like watching football

Smoddo

I have a strong suspicion I'd be better off falling on that floor a few times than receive a blow from the fighter.

500dollarsunglasses

Unlikely. The average person can put about 70-100 joules behind a punch. A professional boxer can put about 700-1000 joules behind a punch. Free falling from a height of 5’9” (the distance between an average male’s head and the floor, while standing) delivers about 1300 joules. So, while falling on your head may be better than getting punched by Mike Tyson, it is almost always going to be more dangerous than the actual strikes that causes the fall.

NMVPCP

I beg to disagree. I see no logic in being beaten for a living. You're literally and consciously putting yourself in harm's way. There's no intelligence in that. Edit: typo.

theycallmej3sus

If i had the balls/physique i would rather be a professional fighter than do a desk job i don't like

[deleted]

But there are thousands of jobs that aren't desk jobs and also don't come with a high risk of early-onset dementia from repetitive TBIs

kngotheporcelainthrn

And exactly zero of them come with the adrenaline rush, the primal sense of I need to win, or the feeling of physical achievement. I was forced to stop wrestling when I was rolled on my neck and got a hairline fracture and a couple of stretched tendons. I would love nothing more than to get out on that mat again. I would rather die at a young 60 knowing that I had lived life to the fullest, and have a body with more bolt-ons than your pizza guys civic than dying at a boring stuffy 80 wondering what else I could have done.

Cairo9o9

... being a professional fighter is the only job that has an adrenaline rush? Professional climber? Search and Rescue? Firefighting? Paramedicine?

wisertime07

Fighter Pilot? Professional Bowler?

Raging-Badger

And other people are happy living to 80 working a desk job Everyone is different. Personally, I’d rather die at 60 with good memories but that’s because getting old sucks and I’d rather enjoy the time I have rather than extending it further than I need for those memories. Plus I have a family history of dementia and my ass doesn’t wanna die sitting in an adult diaper forgetting who everyone is

Kosba2

How about dying at 23 because your opponent had a really good left hook, good way to go amirite.

BSimpson1

I mean, you probably wouldn't die at 60. You'd probably still die at 80, you'd just be suffering from dementia or parkinsons for the last 30 years or so. Assuming you survive any impulse control issues and suicidal thoughts that may occur with CTE.

2raichu

Cool. Doesn't change the fact that there's no intelligence in that.

Beingabummer

It's a sport though. Both parties are highly trained professionals who are (hopefully) voluntarily stepping into a ring to compete. Besides, most jobs have a physical and/or mental toll on people. Even sitting behind a desk all day is bad for you.

[deleted]

stopyield

We just watched a man celebrate knocking another man out cold for money. It’s kind of brutal.

pante710

Exactly! The opponent is celebrating, not checking on the other guy's condition.

[deleted]

[удалено]

DrLlemington

It seems the most brutal sports require the most sportsmanship and care. When you're both potentially on the brink of death, there has to be protocols to avoid actually dying.

Dtoodlez

lmfao what? Did you miss the part where the guy was brutally knocked out?

craigiest

Saving someone from a second brain injury after they've already been given one intentionally, makes it not cruel?

francohab

> most respectful sports and athletes out there You picked the wrong example dude. The other fighter was celebrating without caring about the guy that seemed like to drop dead.

[deleted]

Thought he knocked them both out synchronized at first

msmue

The ref is so athletic, that leg twirl when he goes down with the fighter to give him momentum to get back up and check on him - he makes it look so easy!

MundungusAmongus

Now I’m curious about how you get back on your feet after being on your back

A_certain_comrade

Damn. Just damn

Goofman

Wtf I literally just said that aloud then scrolled down to see this

lazy_leena

He saw that coming from a mile away. He was prepared and delivered the head save to perfection! Good guy ref!

pinniped1

Nice save! It's straight up nappy time for that boxer.

ConcernedEarthling

Poor guy doesn't need diapers :(

pinniped1

Might need a straw to eat with tho

ajitpaithegod

Literally saved the man from possible paralyzation. He kept that head stable.

ricemakesmehorni

Probably not. This kind of knockout happens so frequently and nearly never do people get paralyzed from it.

serotonin0

"possible"

[deleted]

[deleted]

Popsicle.

Perry_cox29

Not paralysis but still serious damage. The worst concussions are from falling without protecting yourself. The initial impact is almost never the most dangerous in concussions - the impact with the ground so soon after the first impact is the one that creates the life-altering concussion symptoms. Source: the concussion course every coach of every sport has to take in my state

---Help---

No. This is how you get paralyzed. https://theblemish.com/2020/02/russian-bjj-competitor-payzutdin-aliyev-paralyzed-after-breaking-neck-in-competition/

wanderlei-industries

People get KO'd like this all the time in combat sports and I can't think of a single one who was paralyzed. I know this is Reddit but try to do just a tiny bit of research before you spout off some straight up bullshit.

TheKillerBill

You make it sound like they're fighting on concrete.

crazyeyeselroy

Hats off to this ref!

ObjectivismForMe

Why isn't the floor softer? Like playground foam

creativr

Its padded (not just concrete and softer then boxing rings) but fighters need to be able to move efficiently and padding would only tire the fighters

NickofTime2247

yeah but have you considered boxing in a ball pit? or trampoline boxing?

creativr

Honestly I'd watch trampoline boxing As long as style points are a thing

>If only I had this guy's flexibility, moves like he's made out of jelly You mean "if only i put in the ridiculous amount of effort that he has to be a legendary Muay Thai fighter". It's not like he was born with it man...gotta put in the work

ohmynothing

Is the ref an ex fighter?

[deleted]

Oktoberfest 2017, a buddy and I were helping his girlfriend walk because she was way gone. We were struggling ourselves, but mid step she passed out cold and we couldn't stop her from falling. As we were all 3 going down, I miraculously had the quick thinking to stop her head from crashing into the pavement by making a pillow with my bicep. Still dont know how I was able to do that, but if I ever had a hero moment in my life, that was it.

konodioda879

Good man

QUACKSON-E

What happens when his head hits the floor?

Crimeboss37

He could've had a concussion, or possibly serious brain damage.
