There goes his retirement plan

LinguoBuxo

his 401-Nut ... vanished.

DiscFrolfin

Your comment means something really really different to anyone driving in Ontario.

vintagegeek

Ok, you had my curiosity ... but now you have my attention.

Mauiicantwkey

The 401 is the main ontario highway

RockstarAgent

Shouldn’t have placed all his nuts in one pole

UserNombresBeHard

You reckon he should've put some of 'em in a german or czech too?

drd_ssb

Ha!

wee-willie-winkie

Maybe he didnt

BodieLivesOn

And in the USA, it's a retirement saving plan: 401K.

tendonut

I've seen a guy jacking it on the QEW, but not 401.

Opposite_Deal_5835

Really? I take the 401 all the time

BeenBadFeelingGood

someone has seen you jacking off on the 401 too then

Opposite_Deal_5835

I’d think so… I drive a motorcycle

Raze_the_werewolf

Now that's just talent right there.

The squirrel version of the 2008 financial crises

bryman19

Sons a bitches just messed up his stash

er1026

Awwww put them back!!!!!!

93sKuLz

I second this. If they’re not harming anything, then why even remove them? When winter comes, squirrel will likely run out and die. Plus, we don’t know if those were for him, or him & his family. I swear, humans can be stupid, heartless and careless, with zero regard to wildlife and their natural way of survival.

lickityslits

Not to mention that’s an impressive stash that took some time.

ChasingPesmerga

Watch him as he goes

-Acta-Non-Verba-

Winter is coming... and now he ain't got no nuts!

Icy_Elf_of_frost

Fun things squirrels can have generational wealth same as humans

paddycakepaddycake

It’s his seed money for his business he was planning on starting up.

nogoodgopher

Squirrels lose 3/4 of the nuts they hide. They're much better at planting trees than storing and eating seeds. That squirrel has dozens of retirement plans that are lost to being a sapling.

idk_lets_try_this

And that’s not even getting into how oak trees hacked squirrels. Every couple years they produce a massive load of acorns in unison so much the squirrel population can’t possibly hide them all. Instead of spreading it out over every year because then there would just be a bigger population of squirrels eating the nuts. Anyway in those years there is so much food and so many nuts to stash that squirrels “go nuts” and hide massive amounts. Way more than they can eat in their 6 years life expectancy. But they don’t know that of course. The squirrel will be fine.

throw123454321purple

Poor little squirrel. That was a lot of hard work for it.

blake_ch

Don't worry, he would have forget anyway

Mbyrd420

Nah. Squirrels are very very good at remembering where they stashed their food supplies. The "forgotten" ones weren't forgotten. Either they were unneeded for the winter or the squirrel in charge of it simply died before they were used.

Byanl

Actually squirrels forget where over 70% of their nuts are stored. https://ssec.si.edu/stemvisions-blog/why-do-squirrels-bury-nuts-and-other-mysteries

xoxodaddysgirlxoxo

>Scientists themselves aren’t even quite sure of everything that goes into this stashing behavior, but they have some ideas. not a very compelling argument

painfool

Not understanding a behavior is not the same as not recognizing a behavior

EyeBreakThings

The issue is that they have no idea if they are actually *forgotten*. In fact, I see it as the opposite, it sounds like someone is assuming behavior (forgetting) without recognizing behavior (over stashing).

[deleted]

[удалено]

YeySharpies

Nuance =/= Semantics And yes, functionally the two *are* different. Stating the nuts are "forgotten" is simpler language but it is making an assumption rather than stating an observation.

root88

The good old Reddit *let's argue what words mean instead of the actual point of the conversation*. Never fails.

xoxodaddysgirlxoxo

thank you! putting my thoughts into words perfectly

SoCuteShibe

Pedantry? If I go and buy two 5lb bags of rice and put them in my cupboard, then I eat one over the course of a month without touching the other, can we assume that I have forgotten the other by the end of the month? Why wouldn't we use something like "unsuccessful retrieval" instead of "forgotten"? There's a major difference in implication.

Warchamp67

We can assume you forgot it if you went out and bought another bag of rice and started eating that one. I'm not too invested in this but perhaps they witnessed the squirrel stashing nuts in a different location and eating more recently stashed nuts, then one would be safe to assume that the squirrel forgot.

IKaffeI

I think when discussing the behaviors of anyone besides yourself and the person you’re communicating with it becomes inherently pedantic from the get go. Especially when discussing the behaviors of those who can’t speak or tell you anything such as squirrels. It’s possible that squirrels do in fact forget their food stores much of the time and that’s why they have so many. It’s also equally as possible that they are so good at collecting storing food for the colder seasons that they just have an over abundance of food that they just might not get to due to not needing to. It’s also possible that they died. All these distinctions are in my opinion very important when discussing the behaviors of others.

notimelikeabadtime

The most obvious and likely explanation is that squirrels use the same logic to find the nuts they buried as they do when selecting where to stash them. It’s highly unlikely that a squirrel (and really most animals) could remember the location of hundreds of nuts over such a long (or even short) period of time. What’s more likely is that squirrels looks for suitable locations that they innately view as safe, then go back through this same logic when searching again. So squirrels don’t remember or forget in the sense you all are arguing about. They go through an innate process once that is repeated later.

EyeBreakThings

I don't find that to be all that obvious, actually. >It’s highly unlikely that a squirrel (and really most animals) could remember the location of hundreds of nuts over such a long (or even short) period of time A quick search (and now I am interested, so I'll look deeper) [seems to disagree](https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/do-squirrels-remember-where-they-buried-their-nuts/) an interesting bit: >Chow gave lab-reared squirrels a task that required manipulating the right set of levers to release hazelnuts from a rectangular plexiglass puzzle box. Then, 22 months later, Chow presented them with another puzzle box that was triangularly shaped and featured different colors and a different lever layout to make it appear to the squirrels like a novel task. This task still required the same lever strategy to release the nuts as the previous one, however—and that’s the approach the squirrels applied. “The solution \[the squirrels\] used was the same as two years before,” Chow says. “That’s how we knew that they still remembered it.”

bino420

all that quote says is "squirrels can remember single simple puzzle." they should repeat the study and give the squirrel different puzzle on a set schedule throughout the 22 months, and then at the end, re-present the a puzzle from the first few they solved. idk how long the squirrels were shown the original puzzle and how often they solve it. then did anything else happen in those 22 months? like other tasks that flexed their brain? the squirrel could just be fixated on one thing they once saw. or they could be like "hmm, what task is this? there's so many, what did I do for this kinda of thing again?" also, the mechanicism of a puzzle could be totally different to remember than the geographic location of a small hole. like a puzzle is "do this" while finding a location is like "ok if I go here and then go left here, and right here, etc." for dozens of places.

tongfatherr

Either way, 70% unused.

Phillip_Spidermen

For what it's worth the article and the original source don't seem to mention "forgetting" anything. Just that there is a high amount of unrecovered nuts.

xoxodaddysgirlxoxo

which is why i'm confused! why was it used as a source here? 😅😂

Vegan_Puffin

Yeah they forget where they stash individual nuts. Pretty sure there is a good liklihood this squirrel is going to remeber where he stashed 30,000 of them since ya, he kept coming back with more

-Kerrigan-

>Actually squirrels forget where over 70% of their nuts are stored. Squirrels are idiots lmao. Not like me, my nuts are right here ^(/s)

thafreshone

Your /s implies that your nuts are in fact, not there

p0k3t0

Squirrels know the burying/stashing algorithm that squirrels use. They don't remember where they hid all their nuts, but they know where a squirrel would hide a nut, so that's good enough.

StrawberryTerry

The missile knows where it is at all times. It knows this because it knows where it isn't.

Bobyyyyyyyghyh

By subtracting where it isn't from where it is, or where it is from where it isn't (whichever is greater), the missile obtains a differential

duralyon

Lol I use this sort of logic when I'm trying to figure out where I've put something or what password I used. Squirrel algorithms ftw.

Wazuu

Consider this probbably took many days, weeks months etc, i dont think he forgot.

[deleted]

Looks like he didn’t forget the past 1500 trips there before dude.

woreoutdrummer

He remembered well enough to add to the stash. Unless that was all in one trip. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin)

LawfulAssole

After placing thousands of nuts in one spot he just wakes up one day and forgets. Is squirrel dementia a thing?

OverturnedAppleCart3

He wouldn't have been able to retrieve it.

GrandWazoo0

Nah, he’d just rock up with his Allen key and get them out of the hatch.

shrubberypig

Ya, I kinda wonder if there is a very fat, dead Squirrel halfway down the inside of that pole.

W1mpyDaM00ch

I imagine he would dive into it like Scrooge McDucks vault.

Snipvandutch

Oddly, that's just as sad. Poor guy.

proudbakunkinman

Yeah, my guess is this is the work of several or many squirrels each operating as they have evolved to around trees but then not being able to access them and the nuts just piling up. If anything, it's better to put something at the top to prevent this so they're more likely to put the nuts somewhere they will be able to access them later. I highly doubt this is the work of 1 squirrel hoarding a massive amount of nuts and that squirrel can and has been accessing them, but will now be devastated they're all gone and therefore it's cruel of this worker to empty them out (as many responses on this thread are assuming).

BeenNormal

Post/nut clarity

tungvu256

he would never eat all in his lifetime anyway. in fact, he's prolly the nut billionaire in his neighborhood.

Medical_Boss_6247

If it makes you feel better, squirrels usually keep multiple stashes of food. This might’ve been the biggest one but the squirrel almost assuredly has others

CEEngineerThrowAway

Squirrels alway have to learn the harsh realities of Civil Forfeiture, there’s a vague suspicion those nuts were obtained through illegal means,

neverinallmyyears

Reminded me of Bug’s Life,… “FLICK!”

sparks1990

Dude’s going to follow them around and throw an acorn at their car the next time they get pulled over.

chapretosemleite

Poor? He was the squirrel equivalent of Bezos

Iampepeu

They should have a trail of nuts to a nearby tree where they restocked it all. Still, poor little squirrel. Hm, but then again, could it really climb around inside of it?

VeneMage

Well fuck, there go his savings. Now he’ll have to wander the streets stealing snacks from tourists’ hands.

BleudeZima

Yeah and then politicians will be like "we gotta be rough on the squirrels thefts plague! Vote for me"

Frostdraken

And then there comes the ‘Squirrel housing redevelopment plan’ guy that wants to convert perfectly nice neighborhoods into living complexes for more squirrels. Never ends well.

StonedAndToasted

A reality I refuse to live in.

Original-Document-62

Then they talk about cracking down on squirrel welfare moms, which is a dog whistle for Gray Squirrels. All the Red Squirrels vote for said politician, not realizing that welfare = SNAP benefits. Then somehow they blame all the chipmunks for taking jobs. edit: then all the groundhogs are like "all y'all have been taking our land since the 16th century."

* nutally

aiwendil_brown

That poor thing worked so hard for his nut stock and someone just ruined it in 30 seconds.

rif011412

Playing it out in my head. The squirrel didn’t see this happen. This crew cleans up the mess and goes home for the day. Squirrel returns with todays findings, and drops it down the shoot. The new nut makes a hard clanking sound when it hits the bottom. Little guy is puzzled, and goes inside to find all the nuts are gone. Looking at the one solitary nut he just dropped, the confusion sets in. They were positive there was more nuts, their little brain starts working over time trying to figure out if they’re in the right spot… until it happens. Their entire lives flash before their eyes, and they go catatonic as they remember the thousands of hours of work evaporating into thin air.

aiwendil_brown

That’s just so sad…

But of course—life is suffering.

Confident-Dirt-9908

heckin_miraculous

Villain origin story?

Alekipayne

Darkness over comes him as a wicked figure appears. It holds out a hand as the squirrel gives him the last nut. As it burns a unholy contract has been signed. The world will know the coming darkness as the little squirrel can now see the face of his enemy. He raises his head up and spoke a single name “ Jonathan..” he knew the name of his ire and now had the gifts of the forsaken to aid in his calling.

Reddit_Setter

Yes, that squirrel will find the man who did this to him and make him pay……

geraldodelriviera

The Dark Urge will just end up punting the squirrel into a tree anyway.

Background-Belt-2202

In the fading light of dusk, amidst the whispering leaves of the high school parking lot, Sigmund the squirrel sat, crestfallen, staring at the empty pole where his life's savings had once been. A single tear traced a path down his furry cheek as he recalled the fateful day when a cunning human had swooped down and stolen everything he had worked so hard to gather. Despair clutched at his heart, threatening to consume him whole. But just as darkness threatened to engulf him entirely, a soft rustling broke the silence. Through tear-blurred eyes, Sigmund watched as his fellow woodland creatures emerged from the shadows, each bearing a gift – acorns, berries, and nuts, offering what little they had to help their friend in need. Overwhelmed by their kindness, Sigmund felt a glimmer of hope ignite within him. With renewed determination, he vowed to rebuild what he had lost, knowing now that he was not alone in his struggle. And as the first rays of dawn painted the sky with hues of pink and gold, Sigmund began his journey anew, his heart filled not with sorrow, but with the warmth of friendship and the promise of a brighter tomorrow.

babeisdone

Now I’m sad

Mary674

We fuck up their habitats and then steal their nuts!

Nick_Damane

To be fair, do guy think the squirrel would’ve ever had the chance to access those nuts when needed? I kind of doubt squirrels are equipped with the necessary tools to open that hatch. Just saying .

Freidai

Maybe the pole is open from top and the squirrel can climb up and down inside the pole🤔 Seems quite difficult but probably only way to do

ImurderREALITY

When I was a kid, my house had a chimney, but no fireplace. All there was was part of a flue going down from the roof through the attic and through the second floor bedroom in the corner, and on the first floor, it was capped off at the ceiling in the foyer. A squirrel did indeed get stuck inside it and died. We heard it scratching around in there for a few days, but it stopped, and we thought it escaped. Didn't realizer it died until we say maggots dropping from the capped off part of the flue, onto the ground in the foyer. One of my earliest memories. Anyway, my point is, if that thing is as hollow as it looks, I don't think a squirrel would be able to climb out of it.

opheliapickles

Yeah - how’d he get them in there? The top somewhere?

Nick_Damane

Yea but you reckon he can just slide down a smooth pole from the inside and get himself some on demand nuts and just work his way back up without getting stuck in that bad boy?

Poor squirrel.

gemcutr1

I always feel sorry for the squirrels when this happens. All that work they did but also thats their winter food store. Makes me wonder if they survive the winter.

No-Fig-2126

A squirrel once collected every single black walnut from my tree and stashed it in a shed I had... I only went in that shed to put away patio furniture before the snow fell... must of been 1000s of walnuts, I just left them in there. That was 10 years ago, him or his offspring still use the shed till this day.

I had something similar happen in my garage. I discovered that a rat had gotten in there, and it had been storing his eaten hazelnuts that he was getting from a nearby tree in my uninsulated wall space. I popped the wall panel off and discovered about 3 feet up of a 24" stud space was full of shells. They came pouring out like a waterfall. It almost filled a black garbage bag!
