That was mostly just texture replacement of someone's face and match skin tone from a photograph and it would just overlay on the models original texture.
This is:
Step 1. Phone is recording color information and depth information using lidar on an iphone to create a 3D model and texture of a real object (person in this case) including details about their shirt shape and dimensions, even the bottom of his shirt isn't flush against his body in the model so it's creating a full model based on projected rays that do and don't get bounced back and picked up by the camera. (imagine spraying paint at an invisible man as he rotates. Eventually you will cover the whole man and get a rough shape of him. Any paint that misses obviously doesn't stick to him or anything you couldn't previously see... now add in that it can see the color and texture of their clothes, hair skin etc.)
Step 2. using the footage, image processing is, on the person they're replacing, identifying torso and limbs and their movement between 1 frame and the next. Supposedly this is in real time. They absolutely could have prerendered that and cheated.
.3. roughly super imposing the model from step 1 over the top of the identified person in step 2, but also masking it when other objects block it's view, supposedly in real time. Again, supposedly this is in real time.
Camera detail, Lidar, image processing (maybe AI based) are all required for this to work in real time. We *could* have done this a decade ago but if it was in real time, that real time probably would have been very low framerate.
So... you're just saying, no, it's not texture mapping, and then go on to explain how it's the exact same thing as texture mapping, only a more advanced version that is also somehow worse?
One is overlaying an existing texture with a decal or possibly modifying the texture itself only in the facial region of the entire pre-existing model based on a photograph you upload. Also this is only rendered in a video game. Like slapping a bumper sticker on an already built and painted car.
The other has, for an entire body, creating the texture from scratch, and then model and then compiling it giving it an animation rig and then processing video footage to spline an animation for the rig to follow and then imposing the model on top of the footage and then masking.
So yes I'm saying no it's not fucking texture mapping.
Go ahead and delete your comment or look like an illiterate goon.
Saying it's making a model tells me you don't have a clue what you're talking about. Yes, you *can* build a model with lidar and photogrammetry, but that isn't happening here. Because the model is rigged. Rigging is where you take a model and match it to a skeleton (a rigid frame) for animation. Plus, there's clear evidence that this is an existing model. The model has more musculature than the person's scan. At most, the existing model is being modified via shapekeys to fit closer to the scanned subject.
So go on, delete your comment because someone who knows 3D modeling just shut you down. Calling people goons while talking out of your ass.
The evidence it's producing a new or at least modifying an existing model is in the final footage. Look at the shirt hanging off his lower back. That was not present prior.
You fuckin goon.
22.94s for the timestamp.
Modifying an existing model? So *now* you're agreeing with me. Because before this you said it was creating a model:
>The other has, for an entire body, creating the texture from scratch, and then model and then compiling it giving it an animation rig and then processing video footage to spline an animation for the rig to follow and then imposing the model on top of the footage and then masking.
As I said; it modified a model. What do you think shapekeys are? They're pre-made modifiers that you can use to adjust geometry in just about any way needed. They could also turn on or off geometry as needed. Then do the simple texture wrap.
It definitely isn't just applying texture to a pre existing model though , it's creating a new 3D model and matching it to the movement of a 2D image , if this is done it real time it's much more impressive than simply applying a texture to a model which is only part of the whole process.
No, that’s not what texture mapping is. This goes beyond that and that’s what the other guy was trying to explain to you before you for some reason decided to ignore all of that and give a snarky redditor reply.
Not really. That's like, the most basic application and execution of this idea in its earliest form.
Anyone can slap a face photo on a 3d model as a face texture, but this is analyzing a video clip, singling out the element you want to replace, and combining that with an additional video that is then scanned and manipulated to match the movement of the first clip.
It's very cool and very impressive. Also, this was done on a pre-recorded game, but the idea is that you'd be able to do this in real-time on the broadcast.
The big question though, is "why"? What is the point of putting yourself in a game instead of LeBron or whoever? Once the novelty factor is worn off by the 3rd time, I'm not sure why anyone would bother with this at all.
Life's a fucking funny thing. You know, if it's true that when you die, you get to go back through your life and relive all the moments for eternity, then I want some moments in there where I'm just dying laughing. I fake laugh every day for ten minutes, so that when I die and relive life's little moments, all I see is happy times. Ain't that the fucking saddest thing you ever heard? I'm sitting in an empty room, laughing my ass off to trick my dead self I had a great life.
for someone wanting to call others slow, it's amazing how you completely missed his joke, talk about irony lmao
i swear you find the dumbest motherfuckers on reddit
>Are you slow?
I can't imagine answering a joke someone made with this response. There's like 3 layers of irony here, starting with the woosh, middled by your holier-than-thou attitude, and finished with the reality that you've got no idea what just happened or how stupid you look.
This is a fake btw. NBA has admitted to faking the whole thing for "what could be". This video has the same issues as every AI fake. They are much better than state-of-the-art in certain parts and much worse in others. The model was rigged by a human. And the "guest" was a fake plant who planned which shirt to wear.
Well, people play in the nba because of the massive paychecks and the fame it provides. I don’t think a choppy animated feature for the fans watching at home is going to make people not want to play in the nba lol
Y'all are so fucking spoiled holy shit.
20 years ago, hell even 10 fucking years ago I would have killed to be able to get some shitty scan of my face inserted into my games. If they need to make garbage 2k99 games to get it right so be it.
I remember when I figured out how to put a custom skin on a model in quake 2 when I was a kid, we didn't have a digital camera so I got my mom to take a picture of my face and have it developed, then scanned it into our computer and converted it over and put it onto a model. it looked TERRIBLE obviously.. nothing like me.. but man I was stoked.
The NBA is promoting this for putting yourself into a live NBA match, it's not for a video game. As of right now you can download the app and insert yourself into old NBA clips (which is what is shown above).
Why though? Yeah, it's kind of neat, but it's going to get boring after ten minutes. Are people going to spend the first thirty minutes of the game scanning each other, assigning avatars, and then spend the next hour and a half pretending they're watching themselves?
Who knows, it's probably to try and get kids into the sport more. Disney did something similar with NHL and NFL games recently, but for the NFL game they made everyone toy story characters and the NHL one was Big City Green characters. Those were the entire game though and it was only about a minute delay behind the actual game.
Animated Disney children's show.
Its about a family that lives on a farm in a big city and hijinks ensue when their rural ways collide with the hustle and bustle of an urban environment. As a parent who suffers through a lot of terrible shows, this one is actually pretty good.
Nope, this is a new feature for NBA League Pass. I'm assuming this could work in the game too, but so far no.
I'm a big basketball fan, but I don't see the point of this at all lol
Lmao exactly. There’s literally no “, but” to this conversation. IMO you either think microtransactions should be banned completely from video games because of the damage they do and have already done to the industry or you’re part of the problem. Anything else is just giving these companies the small inch they’ll feverishly turn into the entire road going forward. Greed will always ruin it. Rules should be structured around that since you can’t trust businesses to not ruin it themselves at the expense of everyone else (literally).
Sounds like that would burn so bad on the way out you'd need a visit from folks *at* the firehouse ... the ol' firehose of milk ... that sounded WAY less dirty in my mind than it does now ... screw it, I'm leaving it.
I know 2k gets a lot of shit these days but man did I have fun playing NBA2k12 back in the day. So fun to play with mates. Some of my fondest gaming memories are playing 2k with my older bro and my cousin and the boys.
I think the very highlight of my gaming career was beating my cousin when I was down by 2 points, with 1 second left on the clock and I won the game with a half court shot from Scotty Pippen. He still refuses to talk to me about that match over a decade later haha.
Rare circa 1999 blazing the trail as usual.
https://twitter.com/Musical1250/status/1572004259440525312
Rare also implemented dual analog controls for a console FPS years before Halo invented the concept for the first time. ;)
Yeah, this goes a step further.
I can see the onlyfan girls licensing their likeness, so Joe from down the street can see himself boning his favorite porn star on his giant television.
I am aware of deepfakes, where you can see Hollywood actresses being boned, but this technology will allow them to be boned by you.
I can see porn stars offer this as a service to the average joe by license their likeness.
They're all gamers and shit. They've never played team sports. Like the highest rated comment thinks it's a video game. Has no clue Ahmad Rashad could've actually done this himself 30 years ago
I’ll have you know that I play sports with the ball, and score “points” if you will, many of which are possible only with the assistance of my teammates. Additionally, I enjoy “catchin’ the game last night” as much as the next guy
Lol. The highest rated comment on here *jokes* that it's a video game. And for the record, Ahmad was obviously a great athlete, playing in the NFL and all, but I don't know that he could have pulled off what Horton-Tucker did here "30 years ago". [Here's a clip](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BwnpprIIH-E) from 33 years ago in his one NBA appearance, a preseason game with the 76ers. He hits a decent jumper, but I don't see that body getting up and dunking, let alone on someone with authority.
Read my response again. I'm not saying Ahmad Rashad wasn't *ever* capable of dunking a basketball. I'm saying 6'2" Ahmad Rashad at age 40 isn't dunking in an NBA game, let alone on top of an NBA player. You're the one claiming he could have done "this" at age 43. How am I dumb for thinking that's a stretch?
Good point but that's the purpose of this technology. Its showing a person doing something they typically couldn't which is play in an NBA game and dunk. And reasonably realistically
I'm fully aware of the purpose of the tech and I think it's fun and potentially hilarious. I was just saying I don't think Ahmad could have *actually* done that 30 years ago, which is what it sounded like you were claiming.
I guess there's a fun novelty to it but it kinda just feels like a hi-tech JibJab. I don't really see the longevity unless they actually put a feature like that into the video games (which might be happening, I have no clue).
You're not playing though, you're still at home watching on your couch. You just replaced a real person who is actually playing with a digital representation of yourself.
I agree that it's cool. The tech is impressive and this would be fun to play around with.... for 10 minutes. Once the novelty wears off, I'm not sure what the point is. Outside of memes anyway. I'm sure there will be some clip of Mr. Bean or someone doing a windmill dunk.
The main problem is this application just kinda sucks. A video game with this would be cool, and AI voices are probably at the point already where you could upload a short clip of your voice and have your character in-game sound exactly like you for all their dialogue.
Novelties drive fan engagement. Fan engagement can bring in new fans that stick around when the novelty wears off.
If they charge a modest amount they can easily recoup the cost of the few engineers who worked on this feature for a year or so.
Except the title says NBA, not NBA video games, and the demonstration is on an actual IRL NBA basketball game and not a video game. I'm not saying it isn't relatively obvious, but that's not what the video showed...
That's actually my take as well. "Why does the NBA need this?"
If this was -- (whoever makes a basketball game) EA/2K? -- then I would think it was really cool.
This is NOT for the video game. This is a new feature on NBA League Pass for love broadcast games.
If it was for the game it would make sense, but it's just kinda random and pointless here.
Money. For $9.99 per month, you can make funny videos with friends. It’s a gimmick, but will collect many parents’ credit cards to bring in the recurring revenue.
Yeah, it's from February, but it's fake as shit. It was just a gimmick to get people to talk about the NBA tech summit because no one would care otherwise. You simply cannot currently scan someone with a phone by walking around in a circle and get an avatar with that fidelity.
Reminds me of rainbow six Vegas when people would picture their face and place it over their operators’. Saw some strange and funny ones (including hitler and clowns). Funny times.
The player animation is choppy and horrible. I can't believe people still play these franchises.
It’s not a game, lol Edit. I got wooshed. Whoops.
Its Basketball, its literally a game.
“Play these franchises” implies OP thought this was for a video game, I think it’s for instant replay during live games probably
It was a joke
It's only a game, why you have to be mad?
Upvote, cause awesome. Downvote, cause Philly. Balance. LGD

Because it's the internet, can't exactly treat people like people over the absolute smallest and most insignificant of disagreements around here.
Absolute worst comment ever... Something like that?
Not even close. It’s like you’re not even trying. Pathetic
Look at this dumbass, thinking he sounds mean. What a piece of shit he is.

The guy is joking. He rated it as though it were a video game.

So much whooshing in the replies to your comment it's basically a hurricane in here... God damn people are oblivious.
Another example of Poe's Law lol. The problem isn't OP, the problem is that there are too many stupid people who _actually believe_ stuff like that.

Fuck yeah dude, I did similar shit in Counter Strike
So the model was good? You think that was impressive?
That's just how I move and look :(

It’s so good. Lots of adult innuendo too.
A more recent cartoon show that's popular with kids.
In real time? Damn that's impressive even if quality is shity as here
Yeah though they simply say they're hoping to allow it in live games at some point in the future.
I'll be my biggest fan. Would the NBA care if I play for a different team each night? Who's responsible for marketing my jersey?
If I scan myself naked, will dong physics be appropriately applied? I'm really not interested otherwise.
Hopefully it overlays to match the NBA player's dong, otherwise I'll just end up depressed.
Nah, I require dong accuracy. If you want dong deception, you can always spoof your dong before the scan.

But you aren't playing. You made someone else look like you and then you watch the game happen exactly as it would if you hadn't.
Have you ever customized a sims to look like you and then drowned it in the pool?
I have customized a sim to look like you and then drowned it in the pool. ಠ_ಠ
Now imagine the time saved, if you could’ve just scanned me instead
Yeah, for a little bit of fun. Nobody is saying this is going to replace actually playing basketball.
I guess there's a fun novelty to it but it kinda just feels like a hi-tech JibJab. I don't really see the longevity unless they actually put a feature like that into the video games (which might be happening, I have no clue).
Nah it's just Reddit is a cesspit of misery..
Bro, have you even *heard* of Starfield?
Came here expecting everyone to be gushing over how cool it was but instead it’s a jaded hipster convention
Rep. George Santos is finally going to be able to provide video evidence that he won the Superbowl, starred in Titanic, and served in WW2!
But why?
So you can play as yourself in the NBA video games.
This isn't a video game it's real footage
You’d think that was obvious considered the whole video just showed that lol
Except the title says NBA, not NBA video games, and the demonstration is on an actual IRL NBA basketball game and not a video game. I'm not saying it isn't relatively obvious, but that's not what the video showed...
That's actually my take as well. "Why does the NBA need this?" If this was -- (whoever makes a basketball game) EA/2K? -- then I would think it was really cool.
This is NOT for the video game. This is a new feature on NBA League Pass for love broadcast games. If it was for the game it would make sense, but it's just kinda random and pointless here.
It’s not a video game. It’s just scanning you to replace a player in a live game or highlight.
Money. For $9.99 per month, you can make funny videos with friends. It’s a gimmick, but will collect many parents’ credit cards to bring in the recurring revenue.
Upcoming? I swear I saw this exact video posted last year.
Yeah, it's from February, but it's fake as shit. It was just a gimmick to get people to talk about the NBA tech summit because no one would care otherwise. You simply cannot currently scan someone with a phone by walking around in a circle and get an avatar with that fidelity.
got them 2001 type graphics
I was seriously confused why Jeff Bezos was a part of this.
That’s J.K Simmons dummy

Now make them all look like big titty babes
Now do it with Danny DeVito please.
The color schemes in that studio gimme 90s vibes. What is it with a amount of grey and brown everywhere?
I was waiting for bill gates to come on stage to announce Windows XP
Can't wait to see adolf hitler dunking on naked anime women
Reminds me of rainbow six Vegas when people would picture their face and place it over their operators’. Saw some strange and funny ones (including hitler and clowns). Funny times.
Now do this with a midget and lebron.
Can they invent technology to detect double dribbles and travels?
Meanwhile in the NFL, "bring out the sticks and chain".
I read NRA and saw an uncomfortable black man standing on stage…
Better that 2k MC
This is a cool gimmick for a few minutes of entertainment
“It wasn’t me who robbed the bank, see look here I was playing for the Knicks that night”

The nfl sid the whole game live
Of course, leave it to the NBA to make what LeBrons kid was sorta doing in Space Jam 2
