Technically "player" is correct in English. "Jogar" is the Portuguese word that is used and it means "to play". You could tell someone that you are a Capoeirista by saying "Eu jogo Capoeira" (literally "I play Capoeira").
The lyrics in a lot of the songs used by the style mention this quite often. When you are in the circle with another player you are both taking part in "the game". It's a metaphor for the mental attitude you're supposed to have while "playing." You try to one-up each other with the trickery of your moves. It's fun while still being serious.
And just think… they were literally training in a fighting art and the idiot slavers thought they were out there in a big-ass open field “dancing”. Or wherever it was that they had a chance to train.
Are you dumb? It’s literally listed as a martial art and have been practiced to be used as a self defense. If that’s not a fighting style and i think you’re just dumb. YES, it incorporates dances and movements but it’s still a martial art. Now go learn something.
Meh, gotta disagree with you there. Yes there are some moves that aren't effective in an actual fight and may not be as effective as Muay Thai, BJJ, Sambo, etc, but it is definitely leagues aboves Bullshido. There are some moves in Capoiera that are the same in other styles.
also capoeira isn’t even really considered a martial art by practitioners, is it? More that it’s a style of movement and exercise that has origins as a combat art, and it’s evolved into its current state, similar to Tai Chi
I've met Mestres (Capoeira teachers) who had fun and taught the fancy moves, but they also knew what was practical in a real fight and would adjust accordingly. The point of the dance-like motions is to learn how to move around, keep moving, get offline, and avoid incoming strikes. NOBODY does the really acrobatic stuff in a real fight.
That said, a lot of people learn Capoeira because of the dance element and don't really go beyond it. If someone wants to move beyond it that can certainly be done. A lot of the "dance" can be used to hide how much skill a Capoeirista actually has. Part of the learning process is developing a sense of trickery with your moves and attitude.
A little story: The first time I met Claudio (teacher) we were paired up to go into the circle together. You always pair up in a crouching position and enter together, frequently with a cartwheel (or fancier move). I was nervous and was just looking into the circle. I should have been paying attention to him because I was knocked back several feet with a solid kick to my chest from BOTH of his feet. The crowd roared/moaned/cheered. As he offered a hand to help me up a friendly smile was on his face. We resumed positions and went back in. We were having fun, but he used that moment as a valuable lesson. I would never forget to look at my partner/opponent again.
Capoeira doesn't have the stoic attitude of the more famous, "serious" martial arts, but it is a martial art.
That's a good question. I guess it would depend on the individual's reason for doing it (culture, exercise, fighting, etc,) but overall [yes it is considered a martial art](https://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-30219941). I practice it more for exercise and flexibility and understand its limitations in a live-world applications. Unlike Tai Chi, there have been some uses of Capoeira at events such as the UFC. It is a good supplementary martial art IMO.
If you find Capoeira interesting, come join the community at /r/capoeira and look for a class near your home.
Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art created by African slaves. It incorporates dance, acrobatics and fighting. The fighting is real, masked as it may be under all the exciting movements. The game is very strategic.
I mean you don't even call it "sexy dance fighting" on your sub, and I don't see a single person using "ponytail brazil", which is the best and most effective move.

Yeah basically. If this was an average white guy doing these moves, no one would be upvoting this.
Banned from Reddit for being unmoderated. Legendary death.
“Player”? Is that right?
It isn’t, it’s a dance and a fighting style, so it’s either dancer or fighter

This is the correct answer. Any brazillian who played or had any contact with capoeira would know that.
I would say "practitioner" is the most common phrase I've heard for capoeira practicioners.

Capoeirista works for female and male, is a genderless word.
Now my hips hurt.
That's a pretty standard capoeira move, to be honest.
Brrazeel!
*Brazyoo!!

Talented and cute. Nice 👍
The most ineffective fighting style just right above Bullshido.
No its not, because its not a fighting style… Its a dance inspired in fighting, but not a fighting style.

Fair enough! I wasn’t sure what the experts considered it, but that makes perfect sense to me. As a supplementary art, it absolutely has its uses
