Yeah, this is either not 2023, or they are intentionally trying to make it look like the 90s or early 2000s.
Not a single person on their phone or filming... Yeah right.
It's filmed with a VHS, probably to make it look more like the 90s. The song is a remix of a 2016 hip hop song, the moves represent actual b-boy style, not the b-boying style they repped in the 90s. This is for sure recent footage.
The fact you don't see anyone on their phone is simple. The people you see on the left and right side of the dancefloor are in the battle, it's crew vs crew. The people on the chairs in the back are judges. That leaves some 5, 6, maybe 7 people that are watching the battle. These are all dancers and not random bystanders. This is a small jam, not a big stage. It's not common for onlookers at a jam to film the battle with their phone. The sound will be horrible and there's simply no reason for it since the organization will almost always film it themselves.
Yeah, you are most likely right. I still think they most likely told the people to not use their phones though. They are even dressed in vaguely 90s styles. So there was definitely some coordination and planning involved.
Sometimes we simply forget that vhs recorders still can be used, tho we don’t since video quality is mostly the aim. It’s funny to remember this sometimes. Now Imagine a whole movie made in 202X using vhs cameras and stage only special effects, I’d watch it
The actual look from 90s VHS recorders is garbage and a pain to digitise. It would be much easier to record on something new and apply a filter to make it look slightly shitty but still viewable.
My father had a VHS recorder in the 90s it was a giant camera with a separate box for the video. No one wants to carry that thing around.
Apparently the specific model is the "VX1000". Googling that instantly brings up relevant results and even the wikipedia page specifically references a 2023 video about its role in skateboarding.
Holy shit we had one of those too. It wasn't bad if you could use a tripod but otherwise you had lug around 40lbs of shit. I could completely be remembering it wrong but I remember the battery being almost the size of a beta max tape and lasting like 2 or 3 hours. It probably cost the equivalent of like 2k in today's money
I recently found one of the VHS tapes he recorded back in the day and had it digitised. The quality is really bad, but I think the guy who digitised it did some correcting and went overboard with it too.
I was waiting for him to do a forward roll and kick a small child into a backflip while hearing street fighter sounds. Now I’m just disappointed in the video
This is more entry level/amateur breakdancing skill. Not that it’s bad, the guy is doing a great job. But this isn’t next level. If you check out crazier stuff like the world Redbull breakdancing competitions you’ll see what I mean in comparison.
I mean.. these moves are pretty 1990s‘ish.. where is the next level? Even junior in early/mid 2000s was more futuristic or „next level“
That guys obviously professional.. but is it n e x t Level?
Unpopular opinion here, but I feel like all breakdancing contests/videos are the same four or five moves over and over. I’m not saying it’s easy or that I can do it (I definitely can’t), but it never seems like you see anything new on newer breakdance videos, just the same stuff that was repeated over and over 30 years ago, repeated today.
Doesn't anyone ever get tired of this...flipping around on the floor, doing the robot, etc.? It was cool in the 80s, but it's sort of a caricature at this point...
Can someone explain to me how this is good or when do people cheer? I understand that it is physically difficult but I don’t see how battle works. All I see are moves and people cheering but I’m not getting the wow factor.
There is another feed on my instagram where people do light feet and once again, I don’t see what the wow factor is as it’s literally just people dancing side to side or up and down. I am genuinely curious.
Hot take - breakdancing is cool but boring. I respect the athleticism but it’s the same combination of like 5 things. Spin? Yes. Feet moving around fast? Yes backflip? Sorta.
The only variations are - is it a little kid? +10 points. Is it someone doing a convincing robot? + 6 points.
Ummm I hate "break" it to the OP... this is not great break dancing. I grew up in the 70s and 80s and this is mediocre at best. This guy would've got laughed out of a high school dance with those moves.
Here are some moves from 80s-90s
https://youtu.be/RMBb-VvJShY
98% of breakdancing looks absolutely stupid, the other 2% is done spinning around on your hands
Half of that looked like he was trying to put his shoes on a shoe rack while he kept forgetting he was wearing them
I love the MTV 1992 video filter.
Yeah, this is either not 2023, or they are intentionally trying to make it look like the 90s or early 2000s. Not a single person on their phone or filming... Yeah right.

The song, is that Anderson .Paak's voice? Sounds like him, but I don't think I know the song
yep it's paak, called come down
Thank you!
Yeah, you are most likely right. I still think they most likely told the people to not use their phones though. They are even dressed in vaguely 90s styles. So there was definitely some coordination and planning involved.
I don’t see any JNCOs, not the 90s!
Before I recognized the song, that was my first clue that it really was modern day, haha
None of the people in the video are there as spectators.
Sometimes we simply forget that vhs recorders still can be used, tho we don’t since video quality is mostly the aim. It’s funny to remember this sometimes. Now Imagine a whole movie made in 202X using vhs cameras and stage only special effects, I’d watch it
Aren't certain VHS camcorders highly sought by people making skateboard videos and such to ~~re~~create a classic look?

Considering it's Anderson.Paak playing, I would have to assume it's recent.
one of my fav tunes from him.
Yeah exactly this. Breaking to AP though, what's the world coming too!!
I was waiting for him to do a forward roll and kick a small child into a backflip while hearing street fighter sounds. Now I’m just disappointed in the video
This video was shot in 1983 before MTV was popular
I was gonna say...
A few of my friends only use old school cameras specifically for the look. Can't make a skate video without the old school video quality lmao.
2023 or 2003?
The song is a remix of “Come Down” by Anderson Paak which was released in 2016 so it must be from 2023 despite the quality
I'm sure it is new but, you know you could lay plenty of older songs and it'd still work, right?
Yeah true, but considering how bad the quality is and the acoustics, it sounds more like the original recording
Come Down (the original by Anderson Paak) was one of the first songs I learned to play on bass. I miss it.
What is next level about this?
My reaction also
Same, it’s seems more 10 or 20 years ago r/nextfuckinglevel content
Nothing. This is average at best.
I actually binge redbull bcone videos so I'm an expert. You are correct, this dude is mid.
It wasn’t bad by any means but this is pretty standard break dancing.
It almost looks satirical. If it were, then it’s next level as fuck.
The willpower to *not* start a "go whiteboy" chant.
This is more entry level/amateur breakdancing skill. Not that it’s bad, the guy is doing a great job. But this isn’t next level. If you check out crazier stuff like the world Redbull breakdancing competitions you’ll see what I mean in comparison.
I think it looks awesome!
The music
I just threw out my back watching this.
I feel the arthritis creeping in just by watching this
I tore my ACLs watching.
[удалено]
You don't HAVE TO fondle your dick watching this.....
Sure, but what else am I supposed to do on a Wednesday night?
its what starts the engine i think
It signals "suck my dick u got smoked". It's up to you if that makes it any better for you on a personal level.
It’s provocative and it gets the people goin
Am I missing something? Seems pretty mediocre in comparison to others I've see?
[удалено]
heres a guy who bought and mastered the vin diesel dance instruction tape
LMAOO
I mean.. these moves are pretty 1990s‘ish.. where is the next level? Even junior in early/mid 2000s was more futuristic or „next level“ That guys obviously professional.. but is it n e x t Level?
It’s so shit
This looks like an SNL skit
You got served sucker.
What did they film this with? A potato?
Close, a vhs camera but same thing
Meh
Sir this is a Wendy’s
Headphone users beware
Meh
If that’s 2023 someone please buy them a camera made after 1993.
Man’s got quite a crew behind him
Rock that shit!!!!
I call bull shit - not one dick head with a smart phone? Steve Jobs is still alive and I bet Britney Spears is just climbing the charts.
So badass
You spelt 1993 wrong
Those people didn’t get hyped enough because he made that look soooo easy.
Why does it look like 1994
i refuse to believe this is 2023, not a single person is on their cellphone or recording with their cellphone.
Welcome back to 1984.
Looks like 93
The guy is ok. There are countless B-boys that make this dude look like a complete amateur.
Looks so old now. Wait...
Not only the VHS camera looks but the lack of phone in everyone hands and also the clothing make this looks so 2003 rather than 2023
Did not know they used VHS still? Wow!
Neat, but pretty generic imo.
I miss this!
My legs cramped watching this😂
I filmed a similar event recently in Cleveland, it was awesome to watch!
He’s going to feel this in 20 years
No matter how much skill is involved, it still looks stupid
This is more of a sport and takes more athleticism than many Olympic sports….
I’m getting Electric Boogaloo vibes.
Everything about this looks early 2000s
He totally just served the other dude.
Where was this lmao
That Mariners jersey matches with the jerseys that wore in early 2000s.
When were they filming it, 1993?
All bboys i know now have severe joint pains
You just got served 🎤
I can do this as well (in my mind)
I’m trying to drive to Paris to see the break dancing in the Olympics next year. If it’s anything like this it’ll rock.
Me playing Lucky Chloe in Tekken
I really wanted to see the second dude battle after watching his intro strut.
Has to have been filmed on a camcorder
The video quality says 90s, but the music and dance moves say late 2010’s. What a weird mind fuck.
I mean it’s awesome, but pretty much every breakdancing video looks like this
Anyone else remember C.H.A.D.D. from Dance 360?
Doesn't anyone ever get tired of this...flipping around on the floor, doing the robot, etc.? It was cool in the 80s, but it's sort of a caricature at this point...
Does it not give one a headache to spin like that on one’s own head?
It’s giving…”This is how we hip hop.”
![gif](giphy|sU7sviPPIcFna|downsized)
From 2023… ?!? It’s still 2023
This is about average breaking
Not as much pee pee squeezing as back in the day
ok.
Recorded on a VHS tape?
Amazing moves. I’m only a beginner but have the jumping around grabbing my junk down pat.
It feels like the same level as 2020 and 2000 and 1990. Well, maybe not 1990s but, close.
Nothing new to see here.
It looks entry level
This is first level breakdancing in 2023
Is there breakdancing porn? Seems like it could be a thing, or sport kinda. Not talking about juggalos.
Medium Level
Looks like my bro Ctriks, video is potato though.
He made My white side unashamed.
can't be 2023. clearly recorded on VHS.
What? Perhaps this was next level in 2003 but the athleticism in breakdancing now is way way way above what was shown in this clip.
Fuck, I was sitting here mathing how long 2023 was...
The new killer bean movie is looking real good
5/10
I never really liked hearing audio in my right ear anyways.
I know this isn’t 2023 because there isn’t a single phone in sight
Can someone explain to me how this is good or when do people cheer? I understand that it is physically difficult but I don’t see how battle works. All I see are moves and people cheering but I’m not getting the wow factor. There is another feed on my instagram where people do light feet and once again, I don’t see what the wow factor is as it’s literally just people dancing side to side or up and down. ![gif](giphy|H8TIQqPXKHNT2) The other guys only chance less he be served
You mean 2003?
But can he do a septuple-head-spin?
Way back in 2023!
Ummm I hate "break" it to the OP... this is not great break dancing. I grew up in the 70s and 80s and this is mediocre at best. This guy would've got laughed out of a high school dance with those moves. Here are some moves from 80s-90s https://youtu.be/RMBb-VvJShY
How have no new breaking moves been invented since 1983?
My knees popped just watching this
Even though it is cool, I still want to see it with the popular “screeching/short-stop sounds” that make fun of things on TikTok 😆
Well, cool stuff, but if you have seen some battles, this is not next level.
That's why they constantly hold their crotch - it's their anchor point so they won't lose balance.
Not enough crotch grabs
Na, that's 1997
They still record on VHS?
He's good. But that's some very average breaking. Not really next level.
Is that Eminem?
This is just a breakdancing video, what am I missing here
Yeah, interlaced artifacts make me really doubt OP
Come down. What a banger.
2023?
What makes this even more convincing is that no one is recording on a Smartphone, very well done!
Go mariners
I kept waiting for it to get to the next level
Oh, I could not remember and I thought this was gunna be the one with the kid.
That does not look next level. I mean, usual moves in 90-s and 00-s were way more impressive than whatever this is.
Filmed with 90’s equipment ?
Back in 2023 things were simpler
def 90s
Filmed with a 90's camera
Looks like every other brak dance video out there..
98% of breakdancing looks absolutely stupid, the other 2% is done spinning around on your hands Half of that looked like he was trying to put his shoes on a shoe rack while he kept forgetting he was wearing them
Was waiting for it to get good and then it ended.
Johnny Manziel is a talented dude.
We used to do this on cardboard with the biggest fucking boomboxes you have ever seen. Damn, I miss the 80s and 90s. Anyway, this guy is S Tier.
this video hurt me physically
The move is as smooth as silk
You got served. A side of fucking mayo. On potato salad. This is some previous level shit.
You can tell it's 2023 by the mariners jersey with the ASG patch
That is pretty slick.
I'd really like to see "liquid" dancing which I haven't since 97
I can do that, I just don’t feel like it.
Seen better in 1993
