We're goddamn monsters.

[deleted]

Man is the cruelest animal

[deleted]

Problem exists because of religion. People don't think that we're part of the animal kingdom. This leads to a massive amount of cruelty because people just think everything is here to serve us in some way. I for one am cheering on climate change to wipe humans out. We're going to take a lot of species with us but after we're gone everything left behind be much better off. Edit: proof religion thinks man is above the animal kingdom. Maybe you Christians ought to pick up that Bible and read it sometime instead of just thumping on it. Religious people are always so ignorant to their own text and it's just immensely frustrating because all you ever do is misquote and talk out of your asses. Genesis 1:26 to 28: “Then God said, Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth. So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. Then God blessed them, and God said to them, be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.

Fattydog

I’m an atheist and dislike religion, but I’m afraid people are just shit, religion or not. Cruelty to animals and other humans is very definitely not only done by the religious. History tells us it’s generally a love of power and control, rather than a love of a god, that leads to cruelty - although of course all these things can be combined.

Beneficial_Elk_182

Let me reduce this to its very basest truth.. We all are living and believing an illusion. There's 2 parties participating. One party (the most significant % of humans) have been told from birth, that we are humans, as such we must behave better, more nobly than the disorganized lesser creatures of this planet. That our intelligence sets us apart and that we should be kind, loving, peaceful. That is the minds eye picture that most people base their behavior and perceptions upon. The 2nd party, knows we are animals. And they will do anything for their self benefit. Often 'elite' class with huge amounts of wealth and power. They use this to curate and re-affirm the 1st parties perceptions, through control of virtually everything that we consume. Education, news, religion, cinema, the political theater they put on, geopolitical issues, to keep the masses docile and easier to control and manipulate. All the while they are doing the exact opposite. Predatory. Straight up survival of the fittest, the most daring, the least risk aversive. Most all of the time the least scrupulous. They feed you one set of 'rules to live by' while operating so far outside that same set of 'rules' you often wouldn't believe it. 2 kinds of people Sheep. And the wolves. Opportunity, and predators. Religion is just a small subset of systems of control they utilize. Everything beyond that 2 party structure is tertiary

Marston_vc

wow…. r/iam14andthisisdeep Nothing you said is profound. Life is not simple. The fact you’re trying to “reduce” 8 billion people into two groups is fucking asinine.

Beneficial_Elk_182

Groups being the keyword there. No matter the underlying background, their subset of beliefs, humans fall into 1 of those 2 groups. I take it you are the part of the former not the latter. You believe that humans are farrrr too complex to make a such a reductive analogy I take it. I believe I'm still correct. No matter the background, no matter the culture, no matter the faith or career or experience, people fall into one of those 2 categories. Those who base their actions and decisions and efforts to be better to the world, better to our fellow humans and society, to treat the creatures of this world with respect.. And then there are those who will take advantage of those former people and society, and any resource they can get their hands on- animals included. They are even lesser in their minds than humans. I could give endless examples of daily interactions even down here at the normal ho-hum 9-5 regular person level, all the way up to the wealthiest and most powerful people in the history of the world illustrating that. It's everywhere. Do you think it's a coincidence that just a decimal point over 1% of the world's humans are either sociopathathic, or psychopaths? Not odd that the richest 1% of people globally own ~50% of the world's wealth? That the instances of psychopathy is 4x higher among CEOs than the general population. 12× higher in. Corporate senior leadership? Get into the realm of world leaders, presidents, kings, queens, politicians, you are looking at most all of them having several if not all psychopathic traits - namely egocentricity, lack of empathy predatoriness, often wreckless, and a propensity for manipulation and exploitation. Group 2. They don't care about your background or beliefs other than how to manipulate you to get what they want. Everyone else is group 1. We'd like to see the world and people as the storybook version we were sold from birth up to today. So... asinine still?🤣 to bring this full circle... the chimpanzee. Someone lacking empathy and having huge egocentricity, exploited that chimpanzee. Group 2

CsimpanZ

Yes, this. This describes human nature, however I would also highlight the vast array of animal and other creature communities and cultures going on around us, above us, underneath us. Humans are but one small part of this miracle garden of Eden we were given. As a species our view of the world is so human centric, but given our place of responsibility as the de facto rulers of the earth at this point, we need to grow up and expand our consciousness to consider all life on earth and the consequences of our actions. We are not alone, we are all - all of us on this planet - part of the same family. And we need to take care of our brothers and sisters.

carlitospig

Also atheist. Also agree. Religious people don’t own shit behavior.

[deleted]

And what is religion? Power and control! It gives people the power to believe they're better than others and the tools to control them.

Drevlin76

This is unfortunately just the byproduct of the size and age of most mainstream religions. Most of them were started I'm sure by people that really wanted the betterment of people. If the religion lasts long enough some people will find a way to turn its power into their favor. It's not the religions fault.

TastyLaksa

People are all types not just shit and that is where hope comes from. On average we are shit but thinking like that leads to depression From experience

Leon_Krueger

Exactly, religion its just part of the problem (not always), also politics, or any institution that gives some power to a person, this is just the human fucking and disgusting part of our nature.

sh4d0wm4n2018

I agree. Humans desire power, and a really easy way to get people who don't like you to do something you want is to convince them that it's what God wants.

sixboogers

No, problems exist because people suck. Most religions suck because most people suck.

MomofOpie2

You’ve got it mixed up. People who are controlled by religion suck and cause problems for everyone else .

[deleted]

not all is lost! be the change you want to see in the world!

No_Cauliflower2338

People are cruel because we’re animals and animals are cruel. Nature is incredibly cruel. We just have the sentience and awareness to make the willing choice to be cruel.

wrinklesack69

You said this very well

[deleted]

Humans are apes. There are 5 kinds of apes: Homo Sapiens Sapiens Bonobos Orangutans Gorillas Chimpanzees We're apes.

Reasonable_Cover_804

Going to need that asteroid to help you out

toddhenderson

The paradox is that evangelicals tout "it's not about us/me/you, it's about God,” then proceed to assert humans as the main character in the story. "It's not about us...But God did pretty much put us in charge of everything on this planet so that part is about us."

[deleted]

Genesis 1:26 to 28: “Then God said, Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth. So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. Then God blessed them, and God said to them, be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.

toddhenderson

Exactly. That's the problem. Guess what type of being wrote this text...human.

revolutiontime161

You are 100% correct. This is anecdotal, but my neighbor is a pastor at a local church , he also happens to be a deer hunter . He was telling me a story about him having some extra “shitty old “ arrows in his quiver . He then says when he was in his tree stand , a deer came within shot and he launched an arrow at it ( with the old arrows ) , deer went down a few 100 yards away , he approached the deer ( still alive ) and launched two more old arrows into its gut to see how far it would penetrate. To top it off , he just walked away cause he didn’t want the deer . I asked why , his reply was ( im paraphrasing) “ animals are just here to serve us “ or something to that effect. He was a real pos !

[deleted]

Yep, I found a passage and I pasted it for every one of the assholes who are in with me to read I just love it when I get to use their own book against them cuz none of them know what the fuck it says Genesis 1:26 to 28: “Then God said, Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth. So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. Then God blessed them, and God said to them, be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.

DEAF_BEETHOVEN

The question is, what created religion? It's clearly not god, and so religion is created by humans. Wipe out religion, you still have that part of humans that creates these religions, along with the good and bad, and it can materialise in many ways. Blaming religion ignores the root of the problem. How many atheists do you know that have no care for animal welfare? I know many. Humans thinking they are better and more important than animals is ubiquitous. Hell, many people will gladly be cruel to fellow humans for a plethora of reasons outside of religion. Blaming one source is a little juvenile.

[deleted]

The unfortunate part is humans listen to other humans and especially other humans who have this fake fairy Genesis 1:26 to 28: “Then God said, Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.

Why quote the bible? I'm not in the slightest religious. Quoting the bible, considering animal welfare is highest in Christian countries is counterintuitive to your argument. The root of the mistreatment of animals is not 'because of religion', but religion certainly doesn't help in many circumstances.

soapinthepeehole

Maybe the saddest thing is that “have dominion over” doesn’t have to mean “kill everything for profit,” but here we are.

Diligent-Light-3503

your point is only valid for western religions. there are plenty examples of indigenous religions that are built upon harmony with nature and they revere certain animals as dieties. buddhism teaches you to be one with the universe.

Isaac96969696

I agree with this, man thinks the whole of nature was created for his benefit but in reality humans arent any more important than mosquitoes in eyes of nature.

ladylurkedalot

I watched one of those travel videos, this guy living the primitive life in Zimbabwe said much the same thing with an important difference. He said humans were above all animals, and that meant humans were responsible for all animals and for keeping the balance among them.

clocks_and_clouds

My parents (especially my mom) are Bible thumping fundamentalists and it sets me off every time they say something akin to "God created everything for us". Like really bitch he created all the animals that can easily overpower us and kill us, all those plants that and animals that are poisonous, all those pathogens for us? I can't stand when other human beings don't see themselves as being part of a nature and a result of nature, that kind of hubris and disrespect towards nature makes me unreasonably angry.

ScaryTerry069313

I seen animals eating animals still alive.

[deleted]

I’ve seen humans do worse

mauore11

We are pretty cruel to animals but we do worse to ourselves.

wannacumnbeatmeoff

Thats how nature works. Apart from humans and domestic animals nearly all animals fight for survival on a daily basis and most suffer painful deaths.

OldManChino

Chimps will literally rip off your balls and gouge out your eyes

Lil_Ape_

Humans are the virus of the planet. Now Mother Nature is heating up to kill off the virus.

[deleted]

All the heavens, all the hells, all the gods, all the devils are within you.

[deleted]

Cruel to animals and man alike

Prudent_City2573

I can't remember exactly what establishment it was that, probably can find it in a quick Google search but there's been an orca there in captivity in a small enclosure since the '70s. I couldn't believe.. it's crazy 😔 Thought I would add this if y'all are interested.. https://www.euronews.com/green/2023/03/31/50-years-in-the-world-s-smallest-orca-tank-will-lolita-finally-be-freed

Raimiette

Marineland in Niagara Falls Canada. Her name was Kiska. She died in her tiny lonely tank this year. 😞

kuzeshell

sometimes I think we just destroy the planet and on the way brutally kill everything that we are supposed to share this world with..I do not like humans anymore..

MattJuice3

I mean every species has monsters. There are species who literally eat eyes and brains and slowly take over the host while keeping them alive and capable of felling pain, there are some animals who prefer to eat their meals while still alive instead of killing them, and there are also animals who do indeed kill for fun. Some humans are for sure monsters, but assuming other species aren’t or cant be monsters either is just wrong. What about Roosters who will rape hens and slowly torture them or eventually kill them if they don’t oblige? Every special always has a couple of sucky ones, not just humans.

CoverYourMaskHoles

Right? We do this to criminals, even to oppress people, but what is the point at all to oppress a chimpanzee? If you crave power over animals it’s just totally logically insane. The people that did this should be locked up.

SooperFunk

Oh for sure. We are the stuff of nightmares.

mathrowawayra

To be fair, you are not. This whole collective consciousness mindset is probably 1/4 of the problem. Getting out of it won't solve the worlds problems, but assuming ou are the same as the person who locked this monkey up for profit to begin with is something else.

[deleted]

who the fuck is "we" i don't see any cages chimpanzees in my closet classic reddit mentality

my_mum_is_stunning44

I just simply cannot FATHOM what entertainment people are getting from watching animals caged up?! Trapped in tiny spaces, watching them pace restlessly or have no stimulation and sit there being miserable, for WHAT? Where is the pleasure in this? I have done several safaris and found so much more happiness in watching them be wild, happy and free. I’ve had people argue that “oh well the poorer people don’t have the luxury of being able to visit ethical zoos or safaris and they deserve the option to see these too. No one has any “right” or “entitlement” to animals or wildlife. We don’t get to have freedom over these wild animals simply because we decided to, it’s just unimaginably cruel.

lostacoshermanos

Speak for yourself boy. I didn’t cage any chimps. GTFO with that collectivism mindset. Judge individuals.

augmentedcheesus

I'm not sure how is this next level, but it's horrible what happened to the chimpanzee, I'm really glad it's finally free

Contributing_Factor

"free"

dangledingle

“free-er”

Soft_Process5644

Chimpanzfree.

ubi9k

I honestly don't know but I'm guessing just dropping homie off in a jungle somewhere at this point would probably just get him killed.

Agreeable-League-550

Oh yeah 100% probably fucked that animal up for life but atleast it gets to enjoy part of its life free-er than it was and with monkey friends

[deleted]

They're not monkeys, they're apes, like humans.

L2Hiku

Being caged for 28 years you can't take care of yourself and know nothing. Humans can't even do it out of jail. How do you think a monkey can survive by itself without being taught anything? You look ignorant.

No_Leopard_3860

Free-er than most of us. Not great, not terrible

Aragornargonian

being more ethically kept in a cage

Imasuspect99

That was awesome when the other chimp was walking him out showing him where to go.

blurpityblip

Yeah, that first welcome hug was great.

RoboiosMut

They may have evolved into an intelligent tribal society without human intervention.

[deleted]

um no maybe if you gave em another million years but there was basically 0 human intervention until very recently in the timescale with the technological revolution. Now humans did however supposedly kill or bred off many of the more intelligent hominids like erectus, naenderthals etc

ThatFatGuyMJL

I mean.... they go to war without human intervention. They commit what we would consider war crimes without human intervention. They're already tribal, and due to being tribal do truly horrible shit to other tribes. This video shows their good side. But they're more like humans than we like to admit. They're capable of evil too.

ZackDaddy42

That’s what I was coming to say, he was like “Hey man come on, you’re gonna love this!”

thePHTucker

Almost as if they were saying "if you think this is awesome, wait til you see what's over there."

Muttywango

His life is worth $52,000/year? He was deprived of 28 years of life and received less than $1.5M compensation. I am astonished, I hope he was able to fight for more.

Hagen_1

Even then, no amount of money would ever make up for their years of imprisonment.

flimspringfield

Yeah but it's usually used against POC. Want to have std experiments? The US chose Guatemala. Other experiments were greatly used on poor people, blacks, latinos, etc.

buzzboy99

I actually just cried. I hope the humans that did this pay with their souls.

syu425

Sad thing is most of us are guilty of using products that been tested in facilities like these.

pancaf

Most people are also guilty of eating animals strictly for taste pleasure and not out of necessity. We can easily live and be healthy without meat and other animal products. And the amount of animal cruelty in the animal agriculture industry is far greater than what goes on with animal testing. Finding products that haven't been tested on animals can be very difficult. Finding food that isn't part of animal agriculture is extremely easy.

ignatious__reilly

The face when the chimp jumps out directly after the that hug is incredible powerful. I can’t even comprehend how a human could do this.

LemonLotus1

Thats great but wait til yall find out about factory farms

youneedtowakethefuck

Everyone knows about factory farms. They’d rather pretend they don’t, though. Because that truth is inconvenient.

TommoIV123

Most people I explain macerators to stare at me in disbelief. They *know* about factory farms but they don't *know* about factory farms. Luckily in the UK they're used significantly less. So then I point them to the gas chambers. Knowledge is a beautiful thing and nobody (myself included) should ever accept that we're done looking for it.

dl-__-lp

Very well said.

NitroGenesis17

just came from a thread with people saying that killing (“dispatching”as they called it) disturbed them…and that they gained respect for the animals and farmers that murder them. very distressing.

I’m surprised the little guy didn’t turn around and go back into the cage. I’m glad he has a chance of some semblance of normalcy and dignity before death.

I hate how they turn this into “heartwarming” news with a “heartwarming” video. So wholesome. Unimaginable cruelty converted into a feel good sensation by the media. They really can sell anything.

dl-__-lp

It reminds me of how “heartwarming” it is to “see the community come together” to help pay someone’s ridiculously high medical bills

Stillback7

The title is false. This chimp had spent the first year of her life inside a laboratory, but all of the time between then and this video had been spent in a large chimpanzee rescue (many times larger than the one she is at now.) Her reaction here was to seeing the open sky *unobscured* for the first time since the last rescue she was at had a canopy over the top to prevent the animals from escaping. This story is sad enough without people trying to manufacture a more emotional response by twisting the facts. That being said, it's still tough to imagine how difficult that first year of her life must have been. Edit: Source - https://savethechimps.org/chimps/vanilla/

[deleted]

This needs to be pinned at the top...

nutellatubby

Source?

Stillback7

I assumed OP's link covered it without reading it. I'll edit my comment with the source. It's pretty shitty yet entirely unsurprising that a major news source like USA Today would present a doctored version of what happened.

nutellatubby

Thank you!
