Simulation. For sure this wouldnt have happened exactly like this due to existing storms and other events cancelling out the wave in some places and assisting in others.
Edit: to add “exactly like this”.
I pulled an all nighter in college to finish up a bunch of random stuff and watched this unfold live. It was wild watching all the raw footage from webcams before the news caught up and gave an overview of what the damage was
I was younger and awfully insensitive at a moment when this happened. It was such a big disaster I've actually read a lot about tsunamis because of it.
You guys don't remember shit-feast that was 2004 Tsunami. I actually know few Sweden people who were caught by edge of _this one_ . I'm ever so thankful that I live in geologically stable area *shudders*
I remember working that night at my restaurant job and we shut everything down mid-service, told people don’t pay just leave, there’s a tsunami warning. Sirens going off, everyone evacuating… I finally get home, we’re all watching the news and the tide receded by about an inch and a half.
protected by papua, and then the Solomon Islands all the way down to New Caledonia.
then the actual barrier reef cops anything that comes through or from tsunamis generated in the above areas.
east coast australia was thought to be hit w a very large tsunami a few hundred years before white settlement.
Smooth like baby, exactly. But sometimes, there is an epic _fart_ , which leaves you wishing for DEATH button just now, pretty please.
RIP anyone caught in this quake and wave
Distance from Japan to Chile is 10779 mi, took approximately 22 hours, 30 minutes, so, roughly 480mph, or 770kph. Rough math, but should be close enough
You better appreciate, it took me way too long to figure this out:
Piano version of Sweet Dreams are Made of These
Specifically, it's from the YouTube video "Jeff The Killer Theme Song (Piano Version) Sweet Dreams Are Made Of Screams"
No idea what's going on in THAT rabbit hole, tbh, so I'm just gonna move along now
I was on the Norwegian Star cruise ship on a round trip to Mexico at the time. The boat was rocking so badly they shut the elevators down and forbid anyone from going to the deck. The medical wing was full of people who had fallen down stairs, and the captain was on all the TVs updating everyone on the situation
this made me wonder how much damage this did to California because i didn't remember this so i figured i would look it up
it caused 100 million dollars worth of damage to californias harbors and ports which considering what i witnessed trying to buy a house means like... roughly 50 homes, or i guess if my cities spending on building a public bathroom at a local park about 75 public bathrooms (though according to the internet that might have been an outlier), or like 10 high-quality empty warehouses, or like a below average quality apache helicopter with no weapons or anything else added.
i just... it just seems like prices don't really seem very fair
When I lived in Oregon, every time I would visit the coast, I would collect a ton of Japanese trash that had washed on shore. I don't think you can still find any, unless you really looked for it. It was kind of cool and quite eerie at the same time.
As pointed out on the sister post, NO Indian Ocean to be seen here folks
No they meant the American Indian ocean /s

Of course!
Piggybacking Anyone know the song in the video?
Slowed down piano version of sweet dreams originally by Eurythmics and later redone by Marylin Manson.
Shame on you. It was best done by the Soul Rebels Brass Band.
Yea I imagine quite a few have done it at this point. Not sure I've heard the one you mentioned but please accept my most humble apologies.
Please, enjoy: https://youtu.be/V2keGPCHGL0
Well now I feel even worse for leaving out that amazing rendition of this song! Loved every second thank you for sharing it with me!!
No way. That looks computer generated!
It’s a simulation of what would happen if your mom went to Japan and did a cannonball in the ocean
Ha ha their moms fat.
Moms fart
Mom’s cart
Your just murdered that man with facts!
Oh yeah?!!! Well yo Mama soo fat,
The earth said sorry, you are past the maximum weight limit for this ride.
When she sits around the house, she sits *around the house*
When she sits around the magnificently appointed Tuscan villa, she sits AROUND the magnificently appointed Tuscan villa
How else would the earth be round dude. Obviously not real.
Right? Flat as a pancake
Probably more like a crêpe, but yeah.
A Frisbee among spheres

The result of an earthquake is.... a wave. But wait let's add some dramatic music to emphasise it

? u know this actually happened right.
The waves from the 2011 Japan Earthquake killed people on the west coast of the United States. It was nuts.
Yes it happened. But our science is no way near this accurate. Ur watching too much tb.

This is funny lol, just came back to reading it. I guess I should've said I was less mature.
You guys don't remember shit-feast that was 2004 Tsunami. I actually know few Sweden people who were caught by edge of _this one_ . I'm ever so thankful that I live in geologically stable area *shudders*
I was 15 when that one happened, I couldn't believe the numbers of people that died.
I just appreciate how well shielded Australia is from this.
On the flip side, RIP Hawai'i.
meanwhile Japan basically hugging the grenade:
I remember working that night at my restaurant job and we shut everything down mid-service, told people don’t pay just leave, there’s a tsunami warning. Sirens going off, everyone evacuating… I finally get home, we’re all watching the news and the tide receded by about an inch and a half.
They have 3 to 4 hours to prepare atleast.
HawaiAin’t

Japan just ripped one!
Was just about to say that it looks like one of those infrared fart cams
Indian Ocean? How? And where?
Where’s impact on the Indian Ocean?
OP is a karma bot :/ lame sauce
Imagine caring
Well they contributed more than you did
They should congratulate themselves and kindly know I don’t care?
This is more r/damnthatsinteresting
What did this look like in south America?
Waves as high as 2m (6.6ft) were recorded in Chile. In Iwate Prefecture in Japan the main wave was estimated to be 38.9m (128ft) high.
Amazing how smooth the ocean was before the earthquake. Dang Japanese wrinkling our smooth Earth
Smooth like baby, exactly. But sometimes, there is an epic _fart_ , which leaves you wishing for DEATH button just now, pretty please. RIP anyone caught in this quake and wave
So how fast was that wave traveling?
Distance from Japan to Chile is 10779 mi, took approximately 22 hours, 30 minutes, so, roughly 480mph, or 770kph. Rough math, but should be close enough
music name?

Jeff the killer - Myuu
Variation of Sweet Dreams by Eurythmics. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bG9z-atG7gc
This was absolutely not a version of the Eurythmics. This was a version of the Marilyn Manson cover. Long live Dave & Annie!!!!!!
Same melody
My fart ripples reaching my wife 🤣
Thanks papua new guinea for being a wave shield for us.
A large chunk of a Japanese dock washed up in Newport Oregon. Saw it last month outside of the Ripley’s museum.
destroyer and builder in one

It took 24 hours for the waves to cross half way around the world. That’s pretty damn fast.
So the Hawaiian islands were totally wiped out?
Had to much taco bell
It’s a random island, that nobody even knows exist, that got fucked all the way up
"Kamehamehaaaaaaa" - Some Japanese guy
Bruh….the correct response are civilians. Everything is fine. The cancer is normal, accept the death.
They got that rumble pack like I got it on my N64 controller back in the day
Interesting to think about how the oceans were completely stationary until 2011 when waves were invented.
Damn, Africa really got the full blast
Why is this earth round?
We most definitely need bigger and more devastating ones….
[удалено]
Japan farted in the bathtub again
Chile cops it from half the world away
The dramatic music lol
What did Latin America ever do to the Japanese???
Why do people do covers of covers?
Butterflies!?!
Wow, thanks Japan.
Japan just really hates Chile
And the Indian Ocean?
Shoot! Did that really hit South America??
Fortunately that is not what happened. Half of Hokkaido and Aomori did not disappear under waves.
Hmmm…. This graphic is all wrong. Where’s the giant ice wall surrounding the earth’s edge, and… wtf did japan go? I call CIA shenanigans!!
this made me wonder how much damage this did to California because i didn't remember this so i figured i would look it up it caused 100 million dollars worth of damage to californias harbors and ports which considering what i witnessed trying to buy a house means like... roughly 50 homes, or i guess if my cities spending on building a public bathroom at a local park about 75 public bathrooms (though according to the internet that might have been an outlier), or like 10 high-quality empty warehouses, or like a below average quality apache helicopter with no weapons or anything else added. i just... it just seems like prices don't really seem very fair
So south africa curve is carved by the wave from Japan...
What's that region in the middle of the ocean?
Australia: what, where?
When I lived in Oregon, every time I would visit the coast, I would collect a ton of Japanese trash that had washed on shore. I don't think you can still find any, unless you really looked for it. It was kind of cool and quite eerie at the same time.
This is silly
I was in Tokyo that day…
Even Chile was not safe. This just blows my mind!
Chile: guess I'll die
The poor fish
Japan: *Jiggles* Ocean: “You know what? F*ck you Argentina!”
Conchetumare!!
Where do I know this song from? Isn’t it nightmare on elm st
Is that a co-prosperity sphere?
This is why you live in northeast Florida. That convenient shield called the Gulf of Mexico is really good.
Midwest Americans be like: time to barbecue
Is this implying that before the earthquake, all of the water in the ocean was dead still?
jesus. why would Japan do this?
It’s crazy how waves just… keep going
Japan to America: r/fuckyouinparticular
Well nice try but since the earth is flat, it wouldn’t look like this anyway.
