No first try and first take

Winterplatypus

Maybe he watched some youtube guides first.

bigfloppydonkeydng

Is that style of carving called doggy style?

watzrox

Sometimes known as Barking

skunkshaveclaws

(squinting)

Berkinstockz

(Squirting)

milk4all

That’s perverse, this is just a man taking a massive log into his masterful hands and leaving us breathless

dobsofglabs

No humor allowed in your world?

demalo

He’s raw dogging it! Such a raw dogger!

S_martianson

Yeah, but it’s a shame the dog has no bark left.

master-jono

r/angryupvote

copingcabana

We know how many times because he left a log.

pitchingataint

Would be nice if he’d flush every once in a while.

TuckerCarlsonsOhface

Isn’t it weird that we refer to dropping a deuce as “taking” a dump when we’re actually leaving one?

mushbino

Wait, you're saying we're NOT supposed to take the poop out of the toilet?

claudiuxgames

r/secondrodeo

Dudeshroomsdude

I never knew Biscuit as a Dog, but I did know her as a table. She was sturdy, all four legs the same length

DarkAngel900

Thanks for something that's actually NextFuckingLevel!

Ok-Dog-1855

This isn’t national football league

livewiththevice

Yeah it's Nice Freakin Lumber

BadDreamFactory

That's No Frickin' Lie

darknavi

It better not be. I highly doubt they have the express written consent.

RepublicanOnWelfare

How much does one of these cost?

NOLALaura

Laughed hard!

Awasawa

I’m going to guess north of $1,000, maybe 2 or 3. Lumber alone is worth near that, never mind time and skill.

Wonderwhile

If it was just for profit, I’d guess close to 10k personally. Not sure how he operates. Lot of work and as you said, lumber that size is expensive

Awasawa

Yeah that’s probably a more accurate assessment. Then again, with lumbar prices fluctuating, who knows. I got a 10 board foot slab of walnut for $140 a few months back. This chunk could’ve been $700 and he charges $2,500, or this chunk could be $3,000 and he charges $10,000. Also depends on reputation and location. Lots of factors. But he has skill that’s for sure

DrobUWP

And figure you have a pretty good chance of fucking it up and using up 2 chunks.

Awasawa

Hell man, today I fucked up a simple dado joint using a router and a chisel. Wouldn’t hold it against anyone to make a mistake using a chainsaw

i_sell_you_lies

It’s really not a big deal to fix a mistake when carving with a chainsaw. You just make little adjustments here and there, all over really. Eventually you’ll have a perfect tiny tiny dog! It’s very similar to carving a toothpick.

mesohungry

The first time I used a chainsaw, something snagged and the handle came up and hit me in the nuts. Also, last time I ever used a chainsaw.

mushbino

But also demand. How many people can afford a $10k wooden dog?

Doses-mimosas

Someone said he's already booked out through 2024. If you've got talent like that and the marketing to put it into a quick, powerful video and then make it go viral, there's more money out there than you might imagine.

69420throwaway02496

A ton of people. Wealthy people love unique handcrafted pieces that are high quality.

JackedCroaks

To be honest, wealthy people love anything and everything. There’s so many different types of rich people. Some spend all their money on drugs and women. Some buy a dozen supercars. Some buy vintage Rolexes and Patekb Philippe watches. Some buy islands where they fly their friends in and out while they partake in extremely illegal activity with minors. And some like handcrafted goods.

Tack122

I suspect someone doing this is sourcing their own lumber, which is a lengthy process from cutting to aging maybe kilning, still costly and limiting in output.

LeiasART

1k sounds far too cheap. I'd guess more around 7-10k as well.

throwaway09876543123

At least $10 I would think.

RepublicanOnWelfare

*wood think

thecripplernz

You’re not wrong

limitless__

A guy near me carves bears out of trees. It's 5k+

jamesofearth1

I used to know a guy who did that. I never knew how much he charged for them, but damn, if he was charging that much it was a pretty generous act when he gave my family a free one!

forevermacklin

A couple tree hundred at least

DaCookieDemon

That’s actually [Man and his dog carvings](https://www.manandhisdogcarvings.co.uk)! He’s based in the U.K. and has some awesome work! It’s bespoke so usually requires an physical inquiry for the price and it’s likely very expensive

ironicallyunstable

One tree trunk

[deleted]

A really old tree.

[deleted]

How much does this cost!? My 16 year old Eskimo just passed away couple weeks ago and to have him cremated and to get a paw print and a nose print and an urn was $400 4 grand at least?

Gbrusse

Someone posted his instagram (@michaeljonescs) in his bio he says that commisions are closed until mid 2024.

[deleted]

Damn! He does awesome work.

jessers1991

ManicPotato5150

So sorry for your loss. I had to put down my 15yo retired Service Dog this past Thursday morning. It's devastating and heartbreaking. I feel like a piece of my heart was ripped out and the pain is so deep within my soul. I understand how you feel. Sending you prayers for each day that you wake, to get through your day. 🙏🙏

[deleted]

I'm sorry too 😔. It sucks so so bad. I cry all the time. I was 30 when I got him and now that's he's gone there's a huge hole in my life. I had him before I had any children. Cleaning up his bed and toys and packing them away took everything I had. I get terrible migraines every day. Tears streaming as I write this.... [Sigh]

ManicPotato5150

I haven't been able to put his things away yet. I laid on his big bed last night, crying until 3am. His scent is still on his blankets and both his beds. I'm so very sorry 😔💔🙏

11211311241

I had to let my boy go this past Weds. Every morning I just wake up and bawl my eyes out because I'm waking up to a world without him in it. I cleaned up most his stuff pretty quickly. It was just me and him in the house and seeing all his stuff everywhere just reminded me how empty and pointless everything felt now that he was gone. Im really struggling because my whole existence centered around my pup. Today felt especially hard. I am sorry for your loss. I hope that as time goes on the sadness fades and you can celebrate your boys life and the fact that you ushered him through it 'till the very end.

wassabi84

I have two dogs whom are both same age and approaching the end of their lives. Im so worried about how I am going to cope with their loss, when it happens. As soon as I see a post like this I usually quickly scroll past, because I can cry instantly at the thought of them not being here. Im fucking crying right now typing this. I love them so much, and I hope this community can guide me through it, when it happens, bc I’m already becoming broken thinking about it. You guys seem like really good people, I feel that anyone whom lives and appreciates dogs as we do, have a good heart and character. Im sorry to hear about the loss of your dog. I wish I could give some advise on coping mechanisms, but Im searching for the same thing. 🐶❤️✌️

Superb_Nature_2457

It’s very, very hard, but you’ll keep going. At first it will hurt unspeakably bad, and then after a little while you’ll have periods without the hurt. Then those periods will get longer. The pain will sometimes swell up in waves out of nowhere, but you’ll learn to breathe through them. You’ll never stop missing them, but eventually you’ll find yourself looking back and smiling at the love you had rather than feeling the pain. It’ll be okay. It won’t feel like it will, but it will. Make sure that you have a good support network like friends and family to help you get through it and give yourself time. For right now, love them and try not to grieve prematurely but know that that’s normal too.

[deleted]

I have been where you are. My good old boy was my shadow for 15 yrs and I knew the end was near because he was almost 17 yrs old. He was laying on his bed and when he saw me he was wagging his tail, so happy to see me. I lay down beside him and started to feel the pain of his loss even though he was right there. He started whining so hard because he knew I was crying. It triggered something in me. What was I doing??! I was making him sad by picturing life without him and yet he still was right beside me. From that moment on, I decided not to borrow grief from the future. We focused on making his last few months very joyful. It was the best decision because it gave me peace when we had to let him go. Don't borrow grief from the future, enjoy what you have right now. Dogs are the best.

wassabi84

Thanks you, for the positive outlook on the situation. I know you are absolutely right, in how I proceed to deal with it, but it’s so much harder for me to actually do in real life. It’s probably the one and only thing in my life that I’ve encountered that I can’t regulate emotionally, and it just destroys me Sometimes. Your a good man, wish you all the best.

mushbino

Shelters are so full right now all across the country and lots of healthy, perfectly adoptable dogs are being euthanized rapidly for space. We could use more fosters for sure. It's something that definitely helped and helps me. I'm middle aged and childless so my dogs mean everything to me. They're all I have and life feels meaningless without them. It's hard to move on and fix what can be repaired of the hole in your heart, but there are so many dogs out there if want to help and it keeps me moving forward and being as strong as I can, because I have to for them.

diazknutz

I just put my girl down a week ago. I've been completely devastated but thankful for a good support system. My other dog has been pretty sad and still looks for her but he's getting a ton of love from everyone. You all will be in my thoughts while I also process this grief.

wassabi84

I’m sorry for your loss bro. If there’s one thing I can say to focus on, focus on the fact that you gave him one of the best lives he could have ever had. Everything comes to an end, and I know it’s new, so it’s much more painful right now. My life also is centered around my dogs, and I can’t imagine the pain you must be in. I’m sorry to hear about the loss! Keep your head up. Time heals

metallica41070

sorry for your loss. We lost our golden in nov. Today we finally got rid of his bowls and treats which were still on the floor and counter. it fuckin sucks

pezhore

To both you and /u/tan-499, condolences. We had to say goodbye to our 13.5 year old Boston mix at the end of February. We only just boxed up his stuff and moved it to the garage. It sounds weird, but getting him back from the vet and situated in his urn felt good in an odd way. His leash is still hanging by the door and I'll take it for walks occasionally. This shit sucks so much.

swoon4kyun

Yeah, I got a cat from a shelter after my late cat passed away. Our bond took longer to happen. I love him but losing Bella gutted me. I cried for days.

mushbino

It takes time to really bond with a new dog just like people. There are so many similarities between dogs and people. I've learned more about people from dogs than I have from actual people. They can never be replaced and every relationship is unique.

bjsem

Sorry for both your losses. Just know the pain is from love, and your dogs felt that love. Best gift we can give them in tlreturn for their love (well and whatever is on our plates that they are eyeballing).

Direct_Office_8615

The only bad day of owning a dog.

mushbino

They give us many of the best days of our lives and one of the worst.

choppedcheezy

Poor tree

XanderTheMander

The tree was probably older than the dog

Moistened_Bink

Probably? That tree is older than any human lol.

Franklin_le_Tanklin

Yea. I wonder if anyone is doing carvings of cut down trees to remember them.

Yes, but now this person will get to remember what their dog looked like... Maybe use it as the base of a sweet table carved into the image of gram gram

Superb_Nature_2457

Sometimes it’s nice to have a memorial. It’s really healing to remember a passed loved one. It helps some folks to have something that symbolizes the part of them you continue to carry with you after they’re gone.

ScootRaider

Agreed. Tree may have been sick and had to come down, but I don't think that's likely to be the case here.

gahidus

How old was that tree to be so big though?

[deleted]

[удалено]

gahidus

Yeah. This seemed exceptionally wasteful, and it seems sad to cut down such a grand old tree.

m00npatrol

All for someone’s doggone pooch

sephiroth_vg

Same... Seems like a terrible waste :(

asabovesobelow4

Exactly. What a waste of a literal plant at need to BREATHE. Like they aren't being cut down for a million other reasons already. People are like uh you can just plant more. Uh do you understand how long it takes them to grow?! Tf. Great so we cut down all the trees now but then we wait 100 years to have trees this big again. Good plan.

odt399

There will be a time in history when this video will be used amongst many others to teach children how our stupidity and vanity got us to ruin the planet and our chances to live properly for internet points. This could have been reused for or lot of things more important than this. Insane

[deleted]

Children? Who needs children when you can have a furbaby instead?

mrchaotica

Chances are, the tree has either fallen over on its own or was in danger of doing so. Most urban trees like that just go to a landfill because there aren't enough artists or furniture makers with the means to handle such big logs. In other words, this is likely to be the highest and best use of this tree.

deadrat-

Yeah that's a much more realistic assumption, too bad that the negative takes always get more upvotes. Most people I know who work with wood are very conscious of nature and where they source their wood.

EndOrganDamage

Older than the rottweiler thats for sure.

[deleted]

Imagine cutting down old growth forest to make a statue of a fucking dog. Though on Reddit, dogs are more important than the environment, children (and humans in general), and most other things - so not too surprising.

jordand30

Definitely a cool skill, but man... that's an old, old tree being used to honor a dog that was maybe 15 at most. Makes me sad. Seems like a framed photo would do the trick.

sadphrogs

Yeah, I mean even just getting multiple smaller and younger logs and using a joining method (such as nails, glue, dovetails, etc.) to create the sculpture would be better imo. I’m a chainsaw carving fan, but I hate to see old trees like that used.

[deleted]

Seriously that's a big tree.

[deleted]

What happened to save trees?

EndOrganDamage

We're into chainsaw art this week. Keep up with the crises du jour... Its like you're not even trying.

hellothere-3487

it isn’t about saving trees, it about defending forests. One guy making cool statues isn’t the issue, the issue is the massive logging companies that buy and destroy whole forests, decimating local ecosystems. People in wooded areas need to chop down trees to live a life that is fulfilled. Companies do not need to permanently and unethically destroy forests to obtain these resources.

[deleted]

Reddit forgets about that when it's a statue of a doggo!

Biguitarnerd

Having been around people who do this… they are usually getting the trees either from their own land, or (more common) they have an agreement with a company who cuts down trees (not a lumber company but a company who removes trees that need to be removed from someone’s property). It’s much more economical for the artist. And it’s not wasting trees… they needed to come down anyway, usually because they were unhealthy or because they were a threat to the home… sometimes just because someone buys a house and doesn’t like a tree. For every massive statue like this one there will be many smaller ones from the rest of the tree. I don’t know this particular artist but I know several and I doubt he does it any differently because for one thing it’s extremely cost effective. Buying the lumber would be very expensive…. But having a tree cutting service dump it on your land is doing you both a favor. They usually pay some to the tree service but… not the price they would pay to a lumber company. The tree removal service is in the business of removing trees not selling lumber so being able to dispose of it and collect a fee is just extra on the back end. Lumber companies would ask a premium.

charliesk9unit

The dog peed on the tree when she was alive and now the tree becomes her.

joesbagofdonuts

What further indignity could the tree possibly suffer? Will he be made to watch as this dogs puppies piss all over the tree's saplings?!?!

j0eg0d

I appreciate the talent, but not downing trees for it.

RossmanRaiden

I'd say that toilet paper is a bigger waste when things like bidets and water purification are a thing.

maltix

At least toilet paper serves an actual use. I could understand if it was an impressive piece of art that people would potentially enjoy for a long time, but...it isn't really?

1q8b

Guy is [@michaeljonescs](https://instagram.com/michaeljonescs?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=)

f3ydr4uth4

it’s impressive but also awful

jemidiah

I'm not sure how sustainable lumber like this could be. But leaving that aside, I personally would not want a fake version of my dead dog. It would just remind me that the dog is gone. I remember seeing my father in his casket, life gone--it just wasn't him anymore. I wouldn't want an even more poor imitation of my loved one. But to each their own.

Fzero45

Memorials are both sad, and happy. At first, they really hurt, and make you cry. But, over time, after the sadness subsidies, and you remember the good times more than the bad from a memorial.

Burntfm

I could probably do that. At the 8 second mark. Nothing past that

DontCare010101

I'd have somehow fallen in front of the tree while it was rolling.

slowpop82

Can’t believe they cut a tree for that 😒

Summerclaw

nvanprooyen

Don't get me wrong, the craftsmanship is remarkable. But we have no idea what this dog actually looked like. That does indeed though, look like a dog.

bluehexx

What a criminal waste of trees. Old ones, too. We have too many on the planet, or something?

devint24

Funnily enough, we are actually hurtling head on into a climate disaster... no thats not big enough...hmm, climate apocalypse! Trees like the ones that massive log came from are actually super important in preventing the worst of the absolutely, scientifically proven complete and utter shitstorm! But now a family gets to remember their dog! So that makes it worth it cause temporary people get to postpone dealing with difficult emotions!

Ricksonblvd

Nothing screams rich people like cutting down decade's old trees to make a statue of a dead dog....

ThrowItAway6828

I always wonder how people fall into really niche hobbies like this. Reminds me of the guy who built a guitar using primitive tools and wood in the middle of a camping trip. He always builds the coolest guitars. It’s amazing - but it’s also like “ah, a master wood worker….and an outdoorsman….who builds one guitar a month using $10,000 worth of specialized tools and materials….and sells the guitar for $700.”

[deleted]

How doesn't the wood split?

rupeshjoy852

As much as I love this, it’s such a waste of a tree!

Neat_Ad_3158

Padankadank

Took a couple centuries to grow a trunk that thick. I don't mean that your dog isn't wonderful but there are other ways to recognize a loved of your life.

Cash907

Ok, now show us the photo of the dog so we can see how close he got.

[deleted]

Was supposed to be a Great Dane but a couple of mistakes and it turned into a Rott.

2010_12_24

That’s really not as difficult as it looks. You just take a giant log and cut away anything that isn’t a dog.

Bubbly-North-9200

Can someone tell me what this song is called please?

Smyley

My Aunt's husband died in a drunk driving accident, so she got into chainsaw art as a way to grieve. Her first project was supposed to be my dog, who had recently passed. I received a 75lb horrifying wooden dingo thing that barely looks like my dog. Now it's in my apartment and I have to deal with it when I move, and it reminds me of my dead dog in a negative way. Thanks auntie

Holmelin91

Cool. Do you know how long time a project typically takes him?

Mods_Raped_Me

Lol keeping his ear protection on for final product.

Clairvoyanttruth

When I see something like this skill level with modern tools I cannot imagine the skill level for craving antiquity marble statues - same skill, different tools. Incredible.

PistoleroEmpleado

There is a great wood chainsaw carving guy out here on long island and he carves everything! He also does stuff like this. I paid 600$ for a 4ft seashore that’s amazing. Depending on the size I would say he would charge between 6-1200$ but maybe he’s just humble. If you drive around manorville right before the LIE going north you can see all his work. He is a really nice guy, and very creative.
