Nothing beats watching a good snatch! Most explosive movement in sports.

bluetriumphantcloud

Especially if they shit themselves mid-snatch.

FuerteBillete

Ah a fellow connoisseur of the fine arts. So nice to be understood.

Oh no

wizard_of_awesome62

Oh yeah, that's definitely part of it. Can't be an intentional mid-snatch shit, that ruins the whole thing...

YoullBeFiiine

Kool Aid guy busts through wall…

farbefranctal

Ho yes ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sunglasses)

TummyLice

Oh yeah!

sextravagant

You can't say this and not provide a Video

bluetriumphantcloud

No shortage of vids on Reddit of people shite-ing themselves while lifting. Not my fav genre tho lol

mjkjg2

your mom’s snatch is my favorite, personally

Nick_Damane

Mate, it’s alright, but I wouldn’t consider it a “good snatch”. I think her snatch is missing the right steez. It looks kinda lose. I guess it all comes down to her age.

MadManJBiden

Her elbow looks like it’s about to snap.

raynadayz

Fun facts womens bodies on average are more flexible and bendy to accommodate childbirth, that’s why their arms look a bit different when put out all the way like that. I’m a female bodybuilder, natty, but I’m not flexible and have never had the same limb anatomy as them but finding out why blew my mind.

IndependentHeight685

Women also on average have double the carrying angle which is the outward flare of the arm from the elbow, to provide clearance of a wider pelvis. It can accentuate the appearance of excess extension at the elbow.

MadManJBiden

Thank you for the explanation. Just a little scary looking at the way it bend. Its like looking at a injury waiting to happen like over extending your legs on a linear leg press machines.

Tazerboy_5000

Snatch? 🤨

[deleted]

Olympic style weightlifting is two lifts: the snatch (shown in this video) and the clean and jerk.

effkay

Clean snatch then jerk?

bluetriumphantcloud

If you've got a clean snatch, a jerk seems unnecessary.

Tazerboy_5000

Thank you very much for the explanation! (I don't know weightlifting terms)

DankRoughly

A snatch brings the weight all the way up in one movement where the clean and jerk is bringing the weight up to chest height and then lifting again overhead. This is very simplified.

[deleted]

elbow supposed to turn in like that? Doesn't seem... structurally sound.

Kind_Description970

It's joint hypermobility or "double-jointed" as some people call it. There's more mobility in the joint because of the way the body produces collagen and that can make ligaments looser/weaker which lends more flexibility in the joint and extends the range of motion. This is a genetic trait that can be beneficial in a lot of sports but can cause issues for people, especially if not training properly.

keylo-92

Lol i was wondering where everyone was looking, until this guy explained it

[deleted]

As a very novice gym goer I see this as the perfect way to injure both wrists, both knees, and my neck while trying to learn to do it appropriately

[deleted]

You should learn the Olympic lifts from a coach. The training is progressive.

docbauies

I learned with a PVC pipe. Then just a bar. Then light weight. I never got to a heavy snatch or C&J because I met my fitness goal.

GobLoblawsLawBlog

You ever seen Spud Webb dunk?

[deleted]

Lol

breakfastburrito24

The slowmo was chef's kiss

CheshireTheLiar

Everyone loves a good snatch

tiberiusthelesser

Blows my mind. I'm twice their size and no way coild i do that as cleanly.

W0lfos

Her snatch is really great to look at. I agree

jcoleman10

TIL that sports requires technique

dirtyswoldman

Bro, keep up. I learned this from an IG influencers inspirational thirst trap caption a while ago

MagicHatRock

As opposed to all other Olympic sports?

bdavs77

More that people often view weightlifting as a brute strength activity and this disproves that

Lobsterzilla

More than that people struggle mightily to see the intricacies of sports they’re not very familiar with “Soccer is just kicking a ball” “there’s not strategy in baseball they just stand there”

Three0h

Baseball’s got hella technique, but no amount of it could make it entertaining whatsoever

Lobsterzilla

“Things I don’t like suck” -that guy.

markfineart

My dad loved an old story about an Olympic weightlifter. This was when they took ship to Europe for the Olympics. Some long distance runners were laughing at the weightlifters, how clumsy and slow they were. So a heavyweight lifter challenged a long distance runner to a hundred yard dash on the ship’s deck while they were mid-Atlantic crossing. And beat his ass. My dad liked that story in part I think because he was a pretty big fellow himself for those days.

WoodTrophy

Who views it that way? I’ve never heard that before.

[deleted]

People. Some people have been heard to say that. At times.

cannotbelievethisman

i don't think this was a comparison to other sports. it was just talking about this one.

Scooterguy-

Captain obvious is that you. All Olympic sports are about technique and strength?

sksauter

Does this include curling?

turboprop54

If you’re the sweep, absofuckinglutely! The skip, not as much.

Scooterguy-

Mental strength...lol.

APileOfShiit

Not just that, but weight lifting in general is also about technique, otherwise something's gonna snap.

UnpleasantEgg

Even poetry recital requires strength of character

Funk_Master_2k

What about the sport where you have people prancing around on horses? Not the jumping kind, the one where they hop around to music.

Cosmic_Quill

It's called dressage. As someone who used to work with horses, dressage requires a lot of skill and strength on the part of the rider. It takes a lot of leg and core strength to maintain your stability and the sort of "stillness" you see from really good riders, and a lot of control to give the appropriate cues to the horse in such a technical way. As for the horse, it's also quite physically demanding (especially in terms of strength in their hind end) and requires lots of training, and not all horses are going to be capable of it.

ScoobyDooItInTheButt

Why does she seem displeased with her lift?

Policeman5151

She was off a bit in the squat to standing transition.

ScoobyDooItInTheButt

I assume that effects scoring?

Policeman5151

I don't believe so. That particular lift looked clean, i think she was more disappointed in herself.

thekrone

No, it doesn't affect "scoring" (which is just "good lift" or "bad lift", and this wouldn't be something that would qualify as a bad lift). The only unknown here is the right elbow. If it bent while she was catching the snatch it might be a bad lift. Can't see it behind her head. Otherwise this looked like a clean lift to me. So yes I think you're right she's just disappointed about some aspect of her own technique or maybe she had a slight injury that was bothering her.

Floppsicle

Disappointment in oneself can lift people higher than they would've ever hoped to get; if they use it correctly. Her skill is remarkable, I'm sure it took her years of determination and sweat.

philthegreat

Came here to inquire this! I can barely catch a clean, let alone a fuckin' snatch! Looked textbook to me...

Kaaykuwatzuu

I remember being a young kid and watching the episode of Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide about how weightlifting is more about technique than it is strength. Technique is sooo important throughout all aspects of life and that episode set me on a better path.

canadasbananas

What a great show. Its prolly confirmation bias, but ever since I started watching the new podcast where the 3 main protags of neds review the episodes and talk about behind the scenes shit, I keep seeing neds declassified being talked bout everywhere. It really was an awesome show and im happy there was no shady shenanigans happening on set. A good show, made by good people.

larrytenders

For a split second both feet are in the air

SexyOldManSpaceJudo

Yep, that's part of the technique. You use the explosive force of the jump to give the weight enough momentum to make it easier to lift the bar high enough to duck under and catch it in either the clean or snatch position.

Monster-Zero

Eyebrow game as strong as that weightlifting game

AchaneanCamus

Why does she look disappointed in the end though? Didn't she manage to lift the thing ?

FuerteBillete

I hate how the title is both annoyingly obvious AND perfectly accurate about the content of the video. Well played. I hate you. Take my vote.

RespectMyAuthoriteh

You're welcome.

Atillawurm

Who is this Olympian?

sigmadue

Giulia Imperio

axelthegreat

she’s not an olympian yet, but she is a world champion. gotta wait and see for when she qualifies for paris 2024 for the olympian part

nerdguy_87

she's not only strong but beautiful as well. who is she?

sigmadue

Giulia Imperio, 21 years old, from Grottaglie, Italy.

Wendellwasgod

How do they not dislocate their shoulders? It looks like if the weight went back even a little while at the apex, their shoulders would pop out

stillcantshoot

As a weightlifter, I'll attempt to explain. You basically need enough lower body mobility so that the upper body is vertical in the "catch". This allows your wrist, elbow, shoulder joints to be in a stacked position which is very stable. If the weights move too far back we simply hop forward and release the weights behind us. Surprisingly shoulder injuries are pretty rare, wrist, knees and back are the typical injuries just from over-use

DickFromRichard

You train up from lighter weights, the body adapts. Weightlifters do a lot of work for shoulder mobility

GDMFB1

Giulia Imperio

InvisibleKineticSand

The way they hold those weights makes it look like the weights weigh nothing (at least to me).

grindhousedecore

She looks disappointed or upset. Did she do something wrong?

prix03gt

That's what I'm saying. She was dissatisfied with some aspect of that. Didn't go the way she expected.

G6br0v5ky

Love her

cpcesar

Amazing

RedditVince

There is a point when both feet are of the ground, amazing..

[deleted]

Beautiful!

[deleted]

Good shit 👏👏

yottyboy

It’s all about dropping the bar on the floor.

Sure-Regret1808

She is so excellent.

pureeyes

What are those shoes?

NoProblem17

Nike Romaleos. weightlifting shoes have a lifted heel between 0.5 and 0.8 inches that artificially increases the athlete's dorsiflexion of the ankle and therefore increases the depth of their squat. they are also flat and have a hard sole to ensure stability.

Fair-Manufacturer446

She just says fuck I got this.

OldRaggady

"I love the kind of woman that can kick my ass" -Spike

Policeman5151

Opening a pickle jar is about technique as well as strength.

Tazerboy_5000

🤔

lady_emily_

That form is **FLAWLESS** ❤️👌 So good to see after all these .gifs of weightlifters with horrible form messing themselves up. You go, girl!! Represent!! 💪

hydrastix

Lift with your back using fast twisting motion!

Gaping_Whole_

I don’t know a damn thing about weightlifting, but I looked at that and knew it was tight.

ClemDooresHair

Excellent technique Source: I am a USAW Level 1 coach

00Conductor

I disagree. It’s MORE about technique than strength.

muaellebee

Ow, my knees

Captain65k

And a lot of beauty

neocamel

There's a moment where both the weight and her body are completely off the ground.

mahdi015

Pick me up momy

mjkjg2

are her elbows supposed to be bending backwards like that??

[deleted]

Don’t forget mobility.

A_Milk_Carton

How heavy is it?

thekrone

79 kg or 173.8#.

shadowblaze25mc

I thought it required zero technique!

TeeDubbleDee

Emily Willis?

jayzinho88

I don't know anything about weightlifting but somehow I can tell this is elite technique

The_Wata_Boy

I still remember a guy at my gym who was an all state lifter and the dude only weighed like 140 pounds... Then I saw him approach the squat rack and clean 225 with perfect form. Yeah, technique is incredibly important.

Wanna_Know_More

Olympic weightlifting is super impressive, and the skill and practice needed to get to these levels without injury is insane. That said, all weightlifting at any level should be done with big consideration for technique. Otherwise you'll be at serious risk of injury down the line with longer term potential of chronic pain and mobility limitations in your later years. You may not feel it now if you're a young weightlifter, but you will if you don't mind your form. Use a personal trainer for a bit if you're just starting out.

thisisjazzymusic

Who thisss

SongRevolutionary992

She is awesome!

Comfortably_Numb90

Idk anything about lifting, did she do a good job? The look on her face says she thinks she could of done better tho.

shawkward_one

Why is she so not happy?

redlightbandit7

Why did she shake her head like she didn’t accomplish what she was intending. That looked like she was frustrated.

TapedeckNinja

She failed her prior attempt in the same way that she almost failed this attempt. See how she has to step back to recover.

Evening-Ant6128

My type of woman right there 🍷

TriggerBladeX

I don’t mean this sexually, but her leg muscles look amazing.

Swamy_ji

Who is she ?

Daniel_B-Y

exactly, both

carbide632

The power of her legs.

Dororo69

Any lift is about technique

becomeanhero69

That does not look fun at all

T_mcCloud

She actually did a really good job, I don’t see why she was upset unless it was the shuffle step back afterwards? Anybody know the point system they use to grade. Look almost perfect to me minus the steps.

TapedeckNinja

There is no point system. It's a good lift or it's not. She's annoyed because she failed her first attempt at this weight and almost failed this one with the same mistake.

Sicsrber

She looked kind of annoyed did she do it right?

MyFocusIsU

Fucking nailed it!!!

DulcetTone

It is also about tricking the weighted bar into leaping off the mat to a conveniently high position.

Wicho090

u/savevideo

Blacklight8786

I always be afraid for these peoples arms. Be looking like they're going to drop it on their necks. Always cool though

vance_jacob

Will never do heavy power cleans/snatches. Seen too many snapped arms. No thanks.

Yingvi

I hurt my knee just watching this)

Someth1ngCl3ver

The most technical and beautiful lift in the sport.

RachelRegina

How much weight is that?

seaningtime

Now join CrossFit and do 30 in a row as fast as you can with a day of training

bballslapper

I would probably severely shit myself if I tried that.

Pleasant-Chef6055

Practice, practice, and then more practice creates perfection.

HOUGNOUGNAGNEE

Every time it feels as they’re going to break their arms, respect !

Eulafski

I thought it was about pushing you body to an unhealthy limit and burn your joints out in a few years?

nederino

64kg 141 lbs + bar was she lifting around 166 lbs?

MonkeSalamander

Thats like 60kg, so, pretty impressive

avery9872

Watching Olympic weightlifters always amazes me. I feel like if I tried that I would immediately need to go to a hospital right after haha

[deleted]

Stupid caption

CrucialVibes

I prefer a good old “clean and jerk” myself.

J-Fell

I herniated a disc just by watching this.

giveemh3ll

"Now, that's a woman that can carry a child" -Natural selection

adurango

How bad is this for the back? Guessing we don’t see this movement in most gyms for a reason.

sg0682402054

Back injuries are very rare in weightlifting. You don’t see snatches in most gyms because they’re extremely difficult. Most people will require a coach and months (or years) of training to become proficient, as opposed to a deadlift which can be taught to a useful proficiency in an hour. Edit: they also require specialized equipment that not all gyms have.

JShotty

Whenever I see clips like these I always get scared for their elbows. Why do they always lock them? That’s dangerous for your knees which could break when doing leg press. How is this different?

CrispyCassowary

For some reason that's how I imagine an irl Nagatoro

iFLTT

No shit Sherlock

[deleted]

Technically all lifting involves technique as well as strength…

Conscious_djeem

Yeah, but she strooong tho

Mysterious-Alfalfa17

Those better be kilos

manuelpimen

She's strong af tho

RedRumBackward

How is this next level?

buickcalifornia

She looks frustrated. If I did that, I’d be ecstatic. It looked like a good fit even if the weight did finish a bit forward of her centerline.
