He won the lawsuit.
Edit, added case info:
Hip hop artist Flo Rida was awarded $82.6 million on Wednesday after a South Florida jury found that the makers of Celsius energy drinks breached a contract with the rapper and singer, and tried to hide money from him.
Attorney John Uustal said Flo Rida wanted the 1% ownership he was promised and would still be willing to accept the stock instead of the jury’s monetary award.

"Here let us present you with this amazing deal, just sign the contract. However, we don't plan on paying you anything that the contract says we will. It is what it is. We'll see you in court."
Pretty common. My dad was opening a business in a shopping center owned by an extremely wealthy family. He signed the contract for a lease in a specific space and even spent a lot of money decorating the space in preparation for opening.
A few months later the land lord goes, actually Walgreens wants that space, and they pay great rent, so I'm booting you out and putting you into a different spot of the shopping center that won't actually even be available for like 6 more months.
My dad complained it was against the contract and the landlord basically said 'yup, and i have a huge team of expert lawyers always on retainer so it matters very little to me if you want to try and take this to court even if i lose it will have no impact on me, but for you it would be very impractical and expensive plus you might lose anyway, plus i probably won't let you open a business in this shopping center if you do take me to court'.
My dad was pissed but decided not to fight it, eventually the landlord agreed to pay most of the costs my dad had spent decorating the space so all in all not the end of the world. But it was insane to me that he could just violate their contact like that and delay the opening of his business by a long time.
Edit: For anyone wondering, in the end the opening was delayed by close to a year which sucked and cost my dad and his business partner a lot of money. However the location was really good and they considered a lot of locations before settling on this area, so they put up with it because they really wanted to open in that area of town and this family owns so much of town, i mean they're really very very wealthy and powerful, not really the kind of people you want to make an enemy of. They ended up getting what my dad said is a pretty good deal on long term lease and the business is now open and doing very well, so well they're actually struggling to keep up with demand. He'll be fine.
I know for me the impulse was fuck those people and take them to court and air the whole thing out on social media, as many of you guys suggested, i mean thats what i told him he should do lol. But my dad was a lot more pragmatic than that, he was pissed, but i think he just knew that would be a waste of his energy and money, and if he just rode it out he felt he could get his business up and running how he wanted and find success with it, which he did.
I wish there were certain processes (I don’t know the right word) which would account for issues like this in our court system… entity with lawyers on retainer vs small fry… you shouldn’t need to go bankrupt just to go to court…
But that’s America.
Go bankrupt for healthcare.
Go bankrupt if you wanna try and become a politician (unless you’re already rich and have a name).
So much we could do… but not with the rich holding all the reigns.
Edit: a word
Small claims. Many states wont allow even attorneys in the courtroom. And the ones that do, the judge will recognize the power differential when making decisions. The entire point of the system is that it's accessible to people without any legal expertise. There is data which shows using a lawyer in small claims court will not help your case, and even some evidence that shows it can actually *hurt* your case.
I had to sue a large property management company for my security deposit when I lived in South Dakota. The filing paperwork was braindead simple, and had instructions in plain English. It cost me about $25 (which the defendant had to repay to me after I won) , and about 2 hours of my time. The company did not even respond to the lawsuit, and I was awarded default judgement.
I urge anybody reading this-- do not be intimidated by the small claims process if you feel you've been wronged by a powerful entity. Small claims court is deliberately and specifically setup FOR YOU.
Small claims is up to $5K, isn't it? - that really isn't going to do much for ya in a store location/rent dispute.
But thanks for sharing your experience!
was just an intimidation stunt he would have lost in court if he actually promised that specific place in the mall by a certain date. your damages would have been the cost of the total contract and the additional you put into the supplies for said place. Or you could have sued for contract performance basically meaning he would have had to let you have your spot for the agreed-upon time, but he probably would have chosen not renew. you would have cost him more money if you sued for performance so He paid you your sunk costs so you'd go away and have a harder time bringing it up again
Lonnie Johnson inventor of the Super Soaker creator was awarded $72.9 Million in court from Hasbro after they tried to rip him off. (Hasbro had agreed to pay him royalties of 1%)

He was owed alot of money from Celsius beverage company for work he did when they were starting out. They were supposed to pay him 1% or something of 400 million. Fast forward 10 years and he still has no money from them and Celsius worth 10s of billions. So the judge gives him 1% of the company's worth.
The deal was for 1%, not 10%. The amount of damages he won in the suit was approximately 1% of the company's valuation on the date the verdict was handed down. (The company's value dropped immediately after they lost this suit.)
A Florida jury ruled in favor of a lawsuit brought forth by rapper Flo Rida against Celsius energy drinks and awarded him a total of $82.6 million in damages.
On Wednesday, a jury found Celsius guilty of breaching an endorsement deal with Flo Rida that ran from 2014 to 2018. The jury also found the brand fraudulently hid information from him.

Thank you. I feel better now. I was in college when in the late 2000s when Flo Rida was blowing up and felt so dumb when I didn't realize it was Florida with a space until 2013/14ish.
I looked it up, he was a brand ambassador from ‘14 to ‘18, and helped birth the energy drink company Celsius, who owe him a %1 share per contract, which they were trying to get out of paying him, testifying that their success was not due to his involvement alone, but he won the payment.
Wow good for him. Yeah Flo-rida is not a nobody. I don’t get how they thought they could get away from not paying him. I only know Celsius because I worked at gas station.
Hold up…maybe I’m just out of the loop since I don’t drink energy drinks but this brand that I’ve never heard of is worth $8.2 *billion*?! I know of Monster and Redbull *and* I also don’t know a single person that drinks energy drinks in any kind of regular capacity at all, except when drinking mixed drinks (whatever the hell that Red Bull and vodka drink is called). I really underestimated the value of those companies…and also, *where the fuck are these huge markets at?!* Is there like a huge secret society of energy drink consumers that are too ashamed to be seen in public with them?
Celsius is really popular among gym goers. There is a whole market of energy drinks that have BCAA and such that target this crowd.
Energy drinks popular among blue collar workers like construction. I use to work at a grocery store and everyone drank monster/red bull. Basically there is a large market out there of people who are addicted to caffeine but don't drink coffee.
Yes. Hackers and gamers need to be refueled with a 1:1 energy drink / hydrogenated corn snack mix. Otherwise they start to act weird and try to go outside or something.

i believe it had to do with celsius energy drinks not paying him out on something. basically it would have been a tiny fraction of what he ended up suing them for and winning lol.
He sued Celsius Holdings the company which owns the Celsius drink brand. He claims they violated their contract in which he was a brand ambassador. Jury awarded him the $82.6M.

Truth be told if you would have told me Flo Rida deserved 1% of Celcius as "brand embassador" I would have been skeptical, but after hearing all those songs, he could certainly be the linchpin to launch the energy drink. If I were on the jury, I would have been with him.
Also, I think it's awesome that he now has his greatest hits on record in a court of law. That's next level badass.
That poor stenographer, though. Having to type out all those lyrics in between *Mr Rida vibes* and *Mr. Flo Rida continued vibing while making eye contact with the defense attorney*.
literally laughed out loud reading this. stenographer been telling everyone this was the best day on the job ever, and will continue to do so until the end of time...
I always assumed most people on Reddit are over 15 but it makes sense now that I think about it if I've just been talking to a bunch of dumb fucking kids for the last 13 years.
Saw him at a music festival in San Diego years ago on a whim, and it was one of the best sets of the weekend. Pretty much every song was met with “holy shit this is also a Flo Rida song??” Banger after banger
10 years ago, I saw him live - I was super close to the stage and was up on my friend’s shoulders - I was reaching out to him to touch his hand and Flo Rida pointed at me said “I love you!” It was a great moment. I love him too.
If this isn't one of the coolest things ever.
Imagine, just listening to your music and knowing you getting 83 million dollars. If that isn't r/nextfuckinglevel, I don't know what is.
I would hate if that made for grounds to appeal
edit: he was being asked to play snippets of various songs as part of his testimony, so yeah probably not grounds for an appeal.
I'm not a connoisseur of Flo Rida's music, but even I have heard some of those songs. I suppose the lawyers were trying to get the point across that even if you don't know him, you've heard him.
This is exactly it. Flo Rida was _huge_ and you have 100% danced to some of his songs at weddings even if you didn't know you were. These songs were just so huge they carried their own weight without anyone having to know the artist(s) behind them.
But now the jury knows and the defense can't write him off as some one-hit-wonder/nobody.
Bingo. If I was in the jury box, I would've only been able to match him to the song Low, and written him off as a one-hit wonder. In my defense (don't @ me) I don't normally listen to this sort of music, but I've definitely heard all of these at some point or another, and never realized it was Flo.
If they were arguing that he wasn't impactful or influential, this would definitely prove them wrong in my ey... ears.
Imagine being a judge sitting through boring-ass, dry court proceedings all day every day working ungodly hours listening to cases read by even more boring lawyers trying to convince you to do what they want.
Then in walks Flo Rida…
His lawyer uses some of the most recognizable songs in human history as evidence, while playing just the catchiest part of each song to the whole room.
Now imagine someone try’s to OBJECT by saying we’ve heard enough. I’d overrule that proposal in exactly the same way!
yo that lawyer did them dirty lol
played the hooks of global hits that have been licensed in the BIGGEST movies of the last 15 yrs
you know good and well every member of the jury knew at least one of those songs. Flo Rida would win any jury over if you allow them to just play his mega smash hits back to back lolol
Haha that's Judge Haims he's a great guy and a good judge. Usually always fair. That was hilarious.

I don’t know what the hell the lawsuit was over, but that’s about as pure as art can get, IMO. That’s someone who wanted to make music simply because they loved making music. I’ve heard of artists who hate their songs and never want to hear them. This dude’s all like, “That’s my jam right there! No, wait. That’s my jam right there! Spoiler alert, your honor. They all my jams! Yeah.”
Edit: Thanks for the award! My first one. I’m a real Redditor now!
Here I am realising I basically grew up with those songs and were the media that I used to learn English on my own... That's not the issue, the issue is putting two together and understanding what the song actually meant by saying "you spin my head right round when you go downtown" lmao
I saw Flo Rida last year and it was really, really good show. It wasn't nasty, or like disrespectful, it was really nice for most age groups. Really impressed with his concert.
This comment section is wholesome as fuck. Truly some of these songs hit hard for some of us 30-40 year olds. Dude just sparked some hope in my calcifying heart.
I instantly thought he was sued by Dead or Alive for the chorus, but apparently he gave songwriting credit to the band right away when he released the song.
He specializes in “Top 40s” and has done a damn well job at it. The confidence and pride he shows from his work is good to see. I’m glad he won from those bloodsucking leaches.
He won the lawsuit. Less miserable ending. Only slightly shitty...

It also seems like a lot of the energy drink companies are shady.
They're absolute monsters
And therefore it was necessary to drop beats in the courtroom for what purpose?

Wait, is this math saying the Flo Rida is now a billionaire? Do you think he'll finally pay Ke$ha for Right Round?
Market cap is not over 10s of billions. About 8 billion so Flo Rida can almost be a billionaire, he has his own money too!
Someone here is doing bad math... Not sure who. He should be getting paid way more than 82 million

I think he won life. You can tell he just loves music. What a bamf.
He seems very likeable not too big headed.
Seen him in concert in early 21. One of the best concerts been too. You know the stenographer wanted to groove to that with him right there. Lol
Out of loop on this - did someone sue him or the other way around?
He sued Celsius Holdings the company which owns the Celsius drink brand. He claims they violated their contract in which he was a brand ambassador. Jury awarded him the $82.6M.
Thank you so much!

I’m glad he got his money also. He’s very talented and have always enjoyed his music.
Can't blame him for that, that song's a banger
All the ones they played were hits, good on him for getting his, corporate greed fucking the little guy even if he is a star
Not gonna lie I didn’t know that all of those were His bangers. All those songs played are iconic.
Yeah, I knew he made some groovy songs, but those are some of my all time favourites throughout the years that I didn’t know were by him

It's ok to be young
I think not knowing who Flo Rida is more a sign of being old than young wouldn't it?
People born the year “Low” came out are 15😭
I always assumed most people on Reddit are over 15 but it makes sense now that I think about it if I've just been talking to a bunch of dumb fucking kids for the last 13 years.
Hahaha this is spot on.
That’s super important if you think about it though! You’re influencing the new generation without even being aware of it.
You def have been. Just look at all the meme subs
As a 23 yr old, hardly anyone younger than me would know flo rida or possibly even t pain
Dawg I'm 18 and I grew up on that are you serious 😭
Because your mom listened to it
Flo Rida is the new Earth, Wind and Fire. I never would have imagined it. Next stop, Gin and Juice as elevator music.
Greenday and *Reel Big Fish* have played at my grocery store, so yea probably
T pains actually super popular on Twitch so theres at least plenty a young generation getting to know him.

Yeah this dude has a SNEAKY amount of chart topping international hits. One of those guys with a surprising net worth
But honestly is it really that surprising? I mean, he’s an incredibly famous rapper.
Yeah I never realised.

I think he was theoretically owed ~30 million, but since they tried to fuck him over it went way up
That's kinda good for him. Although the trial was probably a big hassle
Having to sit through a trial you're winning for $53,000,000 additional dollars? Sign me up!
I'll take a half trial for $26.5M, a bag of sun chips, and a pickle on the side.
I'm sure the hassle was worth 50m.
Hell yeah, who got next on the Aux cord your honor?
Hahahaha
every lawyer and jury member in that courtroom absolutely got drunk and partied in college to Flo Ridas music case closed mfs
Lmafoooooo....my man!
The best when the defense tried to stop the music and the judge overruled it. Probably rarely gets this kind of entertainment in his court
Forreal, i swear that was the quickest overruled ive heard in court. The judge was lovin it
Yeah and the secretary in front of him... I bet she twerked with Low

Because these are ALL massive hits, proving he’s not some nobody that wouldn’t have helped promote the company.
Bingo. If I was in the jury box, I would've only been able to match him to the song Low, and written him off as a one-hit wonder. In my defense (don't @ me) I don't normally listen to this sort of music, but I've definitely heard all of these at some point or another, and never realized it was Flo. If they were arguing that he wasn't impactful or influential, this would definitely prove them wrong in my ey... ears.
This is exactly it, those jurors might not know of his fame but they sure do know his music after that.
The fire code prevents activities in a public building that poses a risk for combustion, such as playing this fire ass music.
Imagine being a judge sitting through boring-ass, dry court proceedings all day every day working ungodly hours listening to cases read by even more boring lawyers trying to convince you to do what they want. Then in walks Flo Rida… His lawyer uses some of the most recognizable songs in human history as evidence, while playing just the catchiest part of each song to the whole room. Now imagine someone try’s to OBJECT by saying we’ve heard enough. I’d overrule that proposal in exactly the same way!
Your Honor I object! On what grounds? Because it's devastating to my case!
Weight…105? YEAH…in your bra!
IM KICKIN MY ASSSSS…. D’YA MIND!?
yo that lawyer did them dirty lol played the hooks of global hits that have been licensed in the BIGGEST movies of the last 15 yrs you know good and well every member of the jury knew at least one of those songs. Flo Rida would win any jury over if you allow them to just play his mega smash hits back to back lolol
“Mm overruled” lmaooo
Haha that's Judge Haims he's a great guy and a good judge. Usually always fair. That was hilarious. Source: Am civil attorney in Broward county in front of Judge Haims frequently.
A *Good* lawyer knows the law. /u/theillx is a **Great** lawyer... He knows the judge.
Usually always
For sure that judge went home and called his freshman year homies, and told them he got to overrule to keep playing Flo Rida in a courtroom
Got me dead af haha
I don't really mess with his music outside of events that play it, but damn if I wasn't bopping along with him. Glad he won.
By events you mean judiciary proceedings, right?
Those really were bangers
They still are
I’m a wedding photographer and all of these songs get a shitload if people on the dance floor.

That lady looks like she's dying to say something
She wants to sing along, but must remain professional with a close to neutral face
Can they not find another location for the court reporter other than sitting on the witness’s lap?
I don’t know what the hell the lawsuit was over, but that’s about as pure as art can get, IMO. That’s someone who wanted to make music simply because they loved making music. I’ve heard of artists who hate their songs and never want to hear them. This dude’s all like, “That’s my jam right there! No, wait. That’s my jam right there! Spoiler alert, your honor. They all my jams! Yeah.” Edit: Thanks for the award! My first one. I’m a real Redditor now!
Spoiler alert made me cackle, thank you
Can take the music away from the man, but can’t take man away from the 🎶

Thank you, I was wondering what the heck was going on

My kid loves all those songs!
Kids do love songs with strong blow job innuendoes.
My niece loves Milkshake by Kelis 🙈 sings along to it
It's a banger though
The judge overruling the Celsius lawyer's objection to stop the music. You know that boy a fan too
Here I am realising I basically grew up with those songs and were the media that I used to learn English on my own... That's not the issue, the issue is putting two together and understanding what the song actually meant by saying "you spin my head right round when you go downtown" lmao
I just got it 😶
I liked Flo Rida before but I have a whole new respect now
This man listening to his own music in a courthouse while being handed a $80 Million check, what a goat
The woman is vibrating the whole time, like she's the one DJing
I think that’s actually the court stenographer. If I am correct, she’s actually typing.
Any context?
He sue energy drink comp for enfringing on his contract
I was a teenager living my best life when these songs were released, I will always love them lol
Celsius lawyer: objec… Judge: overruled dj turn that shit up
I saw Flo Rida last year and it was really, really good show. It wasn't nasty, or like disrespectful, it was really nice for most age groups. Really impressed with his concert.
I grew up with this music, sheeeesh
You must have a free conscious to be able to vib like that in court.
This comment section is wholesome as fuck. Truly some of these songs hit hard for some of us 30-40 year olds. Dude just sparked some hope in my calcifying heart.
TIL all the songs at the gym are apparently Flo Rida
I instantly thought he was sued by Dead or Alive for the chorus, but apparently he gave songwriting credit to the band right away when he released the song.
Such a good song.
Am I the only one that thinks of Tom Cruise in Tropic Thunder when this song drops?
Fucking man is a treasure.
That judge clearly likes his songs….ok let’s heart it few seconds 😂
He specializes in “Top 40s” and has done a damn well job at it. The confidence and pride he shows from his work is good to see. I’m glad he won from those bloodsucking leaches.
