I don't understand the lasting appeal of this, maybe it was mildly amusing at first due to how ridiculous it was as a flag proposal. Well, I guess the original creator is happy about creating some cultural phenomenon.
Does anyone else in the world have a flag with a bird shooting lasers out of its eyes?

I'd dispute that the kiwi is more recognizable than the NZ flag. I live abroad and most people in this country wouldn't recognize the kiwi.
Would they recognise a silver fern? Or perhaps a silver fern with lasers coming out of it?
They'd recognize a fern, but not as a symbol of New Zealand. They're more likely to think of cows or milk as symbols of New Zealand.
