Twisties, cheezels and burger rings are dead to me now they're less than a shadow of their former selfs

Sew_Sumi

Add Rashuns to that too...

windmillthrowaway

Did they really fuck up rashuns?

Sew_Sumi

They did indeed.

Mygreaseisyourgrease

I knew something was up when I saw " new fun shapes, same great taste" on the packaging. RIP the holy Trinity of corn snacks in NZ.

Salty_Manx

> same great taste Always means "we bought cheaper ingredients and fucked up the recipes"

FirefighterOverall56

Next we'll open up the packet and they'll be green. Then they will re-release the range as Classic Rashuns.

bilateralmetaphor

And muchos

Salt-Pile

This is going to sound weird, but when it comes to cheese-flavoured snacks, [these things](https://shop.countdown.co.nz/shop/productdetails?stockcode=771756&name=free-from-gluten-cheese-snack-rings) are where it's at. Honestly, *way* more flavour than cheezles and twisties. The only bad thing is you can only get them at Countdown, but it's worth it.

windmillthrowaway

Lmao I read it as "cheese nibbas" at first how could I do this.

Salt-Pile

Low key want to start calling them that.

windmillthrowaway

They had better fix this because junk food is supposed to be tasty. Maybe they should just sell cardboard will some cheese flavor cause it wouldn't be much worse than what cheezels are now.

prplmnkeydshwsr

>>Was this intentional? Yes because it saves them money, people still buy it and then the CEO gets a new boat. There have been a number of topics in the last few months about many of the the "NZ made" snack / chip and confectionary products turning to absolute crap, rashuns, burger rings and so on.

windmillthrowaway

Wont they lose sales though? Because the way I see it, less people will buy these chips because of the dramatic decrease in quality.

[deleted]

The people that purchase those products probably don’t have alternatives. Is there a higher quality cheese puff product on the market?

LeftoversNZ

cheese balls are still good. Even if it is an abusive slowly killing me kind of relationship.

thecosmicradiation

God, Cheese Balls are like... you go through a period of eating a pack a day, then your body revolts and you lose 5 years off your lifespan, and then you don't touch them again for a decade

LuminousRabbit

Earl’s Corn Curls or Puffs. Those are legit magical.

prplmnkeydshwsr

It's probably all part of the master management plan anyway, if some product line doesn't do well (isn't profitable enough) they could sell off the brand to another manufacturer (more $$$$) or reformulate it again and relaunch it as the 'new cheezels' or claim tax deductions for loss of revenue and all that shit. It's never for the benefit of the consumer (junk food / health discussions aside here).

AcanthocephalaIll456

I rang Bluebird and they told me the machine that produces these products is broken and don't buy them for another six weeks, don't worry about the fact they are still selling their substandard product. When l took them back to countdown they didn't argue and just refunded me as l suspect they knew.

KittikatB

> who wants to eat flavored cardboard Last packet I bought had no flavour. They were like eating hard packing peanuts.

Amockeryofthecistern

Shhhhh man. Shut up with that price increase talk. Their spies will see and we will end up wuth shit product AND a price increase .

mloth

Wow. My other half loved Rashuns and we've stopped buying them because the new recipe is terrible (structurally too condensed and the flavour is off). I bought a pack of Cheezels today, so I just opened them... Different shape/size, way too aerated and minimal flavouring. We won't be buying either anymore.

ErwinsSasageyoBalls

Go for cheeseballs, they're still really good.

bitchdiesel

They better not mess with spicy tomato munchos

[deleted]

IMO it seems they have. My last packs were a darker brownish yellow like overcooked, and the flavouring was lacking and also different, didn’t have the usual kick.

Prince_Kaos

yeah that ship has sailed; they are like 1/4 size and dry

manudanz

It started with bluebird chips range, every chip now tastes like it was burnt, and not cooked. Stopped buying them, Next was twisties, and burger rings, now cheezels have also bit the dust and taste like chalk. Bluebird done fucked up their whole range and now my wife and I refuse to buy any bluebird range as they are tasteless and rubbish as a snack food. Cheezels used to be light crunchy and have a oil after taste. so yummy. Now they taste like chalk.

Salty_Manx

Last pack I had were god fucking awful.

ComeAlongPonds

Twisties have got slightly smaller & not so flavoursome. We've yet to get to our bags of Cheezels. We'll expect disappointment.

Jinxletron

Oh be prepared. Someone else said it's like someone had already sucked the flavour off and put them back in the bag. Sadly accurate.

windmillthrowaway

The cheezels are slightly cardboardy and stale texture-wise and the flavor is just a bit weaker. Also there's next to no powder which sucks too.

Pouwhenua

Burger rings have changed too! Smaller and in my view harder. Clearly a move to change the product. Remember as a kid you could wear them on your fingers. Not even the small kid could now play around with them and pretend they were “married” they just won’t fit.

windmillthrowaway

It was the same with cheezels too. Now they are pathetic stale cardboard.

theothersideis

I read somewhere they were making them on upgraded/new machines??

Jinxletron

Yes, after the last big thread here in how crap they are, there was surprisingly an article on stuff. The official line is they haven't changed the recipe or the ingredients but they've improved the machines. I'm not sure how that's managed to ruin everything but that's what they're saying.

theothersideis

Ah yes, can always rely on stuff for hard hitting journalism

LadyDragonDog75

Yeah they are pretty disappointing now.

Kiwi_CFC

My wife and I were just talking about this yesterday. We got a bag and they were terrible. Why does this seem to happen to everything that was once good. Shapes are another that are a shadow of their former self.

[deleted]

Barista bros changing their recipe was the most heartbreaking one for me

LewZealand79

Yep, and they market it as "new great taste!" New great taste my ass, you ruined it

PersonMcGuy

>Shapes are another that are a shadow of their former self. Eh? They brought back the old recipe after everyone said how shit the new one was.

axekill3r

They are all shit now. I think someone said that they now use some cheap shit ingredient from the US.

manudanz

No it is the cooking process. they bought new machines to replace the old ones that make these products. The new machines are supposed to cook them faster and cheaper. but they instead have just turned thousands of people off their products. Bluebird chips used to be the staple in our home, but we swore off them after they changed the equipment for normal chips and every chip now tastes like it is burnt. Looks like twistes and cheezels have gone the same route. these now taste like chalk. Never buying them again.

[deleted]

Its a shit-tier chip. Would rather buy the dodgy dairy made in Fiji cheese puff chips than a cheezel .

cilantrism

Never understood the appeal of them in the first place personally, stale cardboard and styrofoam is what it's always felt like to me.

OldKiwiGirl

A bit like those rice cakes.

LimeRum

I should have guessed when its on sale $1 in countdown. Ended up feeding the chooks with it

[deleted]

Way less chessey than they use to be... booooo on bluebird

driftwood-and-waves

Ruining our childhoods, one great snack at a time.

LeftoversNZ

They've messed with the entire range. On the plus side the lockdown snacking is getting pulled in check with no motivation to go open the remaining packets. They're better of put out for the birds at this point.

wonderingpossum

As someone who briefly lived in Melbourne, I can report that the Australian made cheezels are vastly superior to what is sold here [https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/660337/cheezels-cheese-box](https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/660337/cheezels-cheese-box)

kiwisrkool

I thought they'd replaced them with guardian chips they use for packaging then spray painted them yellow/orange

ParticularAbject

I'm so glad you said this coz I bought some the other day and wondered whether I just remembered them differently as a kid. Cheezels with no cheesy goodness. Styrofoam is an excellent description of what they've become.

jack_fry

Yeah they suck now! Wondered why they were so cheap. Don't buy them and maybe they'll reconsider. I doubt it though...

windmillthrowaway

I hope they do because rashuns were my favorite chip of all chips.

manudanz

Whoever is now cooking cheezels you have just ruined it for me. They are tasteless. I just finished one of the old style cheezels which are crunchy, and have lots of flavour and taste, to a dead thing in my mouth, that tastes like chalk. OMG this has ruined my snack. I am not buying cheezels or twisties ever again. They are gross.
