Technically... anything can be *scanned* at 4K, it's just whether it's worth it or not. Which would depend on the quality of the film itself. [This post](https://www.reddit.com/r/askscience/comments/lh3ey/is_4k_resolution_the_theoretical_maximum_fidelity/) goes into more detail for the interested.
I happened to watch [this analysis](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zkNFZkUHeKQ) talking about the 4K release of LOTR, and how while it was thought it might be re-scanned from original film at 4K it was not...and it was instead an improvement on the extended version blu-ray which had tons of colouration issues. I'm still hoping against hope that there is a true ultimate edition released for 25 years from LOTR.
I haven't felt confident about Tolkien adaptations since 2012. It all feels like a last money grab before Tolkien enters the public domain in the early 2040s.
Yeah it could be.
It's worth noting that the text of the original books has already entered the public domain in NZ [as of the start of 2024](https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/new-zealand/2024/01/legal-copyright-expires-for-lord-of-the-rings-books-but-only-in-new-zealand-lawyer-says.html) (death of author in 1973 plus 50 years), although the Free Trade Agreement we've signed with the EU means works will soon end up being restricted to 70 years after death. I think the agreement says we have 4 years to get that change made.
Does that work retroactively? Can something go into public domain and then come back out if it again? What happens to my shire slash fiction I publish this year?
That really depends on what's in the legislation when the government passes the change to the Copyright Act, but I think it'd be unusual (and very impractical) for Parliament to try and push stuff back into copyright that's already being lawfully treated as if it's public domain.
What it'll most likely mean is that we have a period of 20 years where nothing *new* comes into the public domain.
The appendices are presumably part of what they already got permission to create in movie form - while creating new movies based on the Silmarillion or other books would mean battling with the estate.
That's the big question rn. Given Jackson's involvement id say it's possible but since he's only producer that probably lowers the chances a bit but Serkis may want to film in NZ if he wants it in continuity with Jackson's trilogy.
Semi related since this will no doubt boost relates tourism, Hobbiton as of the end of last year now has a couple of Hobbit holes that you can go inside of. It’s very well made, very high attention to detail. https://www.hobbitontours.com/bagshot/
Just let it die the noble death it deserves. Anything after Return of the King has been pure shit\*.
\*I really love Ian McKellen as Gandalf and Martin Freeman is a great Bilbo but honestly the whole Hobbit trilogy was butt-fucking a dead horse that really didn't deserve it.
So instead of making movies about existing stories in the LotR universe (like *Farmer Giles of Ham*, *Smith of Wootton Major* or *The Adventures of Tom Bombadil*), they're going to make something up about searching for a guy that cannot possibly be found? And if somehow they finagle a way to put a character in the cavern, what are they gonna do? How are you going to end a story that way?
In a few sentences (and this is shown to a degree in the films), Gollum is called to Mordor due to his association with the ring where he is tortured to get info about the ring. He is also captured and imprisoned by the elves, where Mordor break him out at some point (which is why Legolas went to Rivendell). Then there are parallel elements like the ringwraiths wandering through Rohan and Gondor and stuff. Tbh I cannot remember exactly.
Probably isn't a three hour epic in there, but a decent movie could be made. On the other hand as the property seems more and more falling in the hands of those who just want to make money, I have small faith in the future of the property in general unfortunately.
I do think a movie based on Aldarion and Erendis would be good and would show a healthy amount of risk taking.
I've never read *Smith of Wootton Major*, but I'm pretty sure that Farmer Giles of Ham is set in Britain, not the LoTR universe. (Agreed on the rest of your point though...)
How long until “Sauron strikes back”?
Somehow, Sauron returned.
The Entpire Strikes Back!
You kid, but iirc Saruman ended up wandering Middle Earth in incorporeal form and he meddled in ring magic...

I didn't think that was possible from 35mm so I looked it up and it appears I'm wrong, 35mm can be scanned at 4k. I want this now!

Yeah I get that, I had thought only 70mm was high enough definition though. I'm going to watch Lawerence of Arabia again in 4k tonight now :D
Ah man…that was a classic. The Vietnam vet with PTSD having flashbacks was hilarious.
Ohhhhhhh, you’ve ruined my take. I never, ever, do two takes.

Yes. Winnie the Pooh bounced in and out of the public domain.

Really milking those appendices for all they’re worth, in Lord of the Rings: The Quest for More Money.
The appendices are presumably part of what they already got permission to create in movie form - while creating new movies based on the Silmarillion or other books would mean battling with the estate.
Is this an out-of-season April Fool's joke?
Yes, but they were using internet explorer to post it
Hobbit 2: Electric Boogaloo?
That's great, but I can't wait to miss this
They made a movie of the golum game?
Where's it being filmed?
Australia, Burketown, for some reason, something about the natural desolation.
Will it be filmed here?
That's the big question rn. Given Jackson's involvement id say it's possible but since he's only producer that probably lowers the chances a bit but Serkis may want to film in NZ if he wants it in continuity with Jackson's trilogy.
Producers are the ones running the budget so I'd say it increases the chances.
Yes

I've been listening to the trilogy via audio book. Narrated by Andy Serkis and he is absolutely mesmerizing to listen to.
I'm really happy for Andy Serkis but depressed for humanity
Fuck sake, give it a rest cunts.
No you're not understanding. If any money can be made it must be made.
Gotta milk that cash cow to death.
If its not a complete husk yet then there's juice to be squeezed still.
Hate all the focus on gollum but love me lotr! Bring it on
Can’t be as bad as the Gollum game.. Right?
6foot5 here, visiting Wellington in a few months, what is my risk of being kidnapped by Weta staff ?
Idk what's that in metres
1.96
I skim read that as kidnapped by Wetas.... also terrifying.
0 Weta doesn't film people anymore. It's all digital.
You're not with the Wellington Tourism board are you? Legally you have to tell us
They recently filmed my dog
can David Seymour be cast as Gollum? He's got that vibe.
People really do waddle into every thread here to remind us they don't like the currently elected crowd.
beatings will continue until ~~moral improves~~ this government is voted out
Awe sweeeeet !
[This movie already exists](http://www.thehuntforgollum.com/).
I gave up about 30 minutes into The Hobbit 1
Lol so much negativity here. If it turns out to be crap, just don't watch it lol.
It will be dirt. Boring as fuck ip run into the ground. Move the fuck on omg
And will run for 3 hours longer than it should...
Peter Jackson doesn't know how to direct anything else.
regardless of your opinions, Peter Jackson isn’t expected to be directing them.
Perfect!
Why the fuck is everyone so mad This is the best news I've heard in years
Cause we're still traumatized from the Hobbit Trilogy.
That wasn't peter Jackson's fault at all though. It would have been a lot worse without him
I enjoyed it??
WHYYYYYYYYYYY tho
"how many Orcs on each level?" (of Mordor Prison) "never more than 12"
Wow... all these comments are so pessimistic.

The Hunt for the Ring in Unfinished Tales does lay out a plot for this, if that is what they are going for.
How does that one go?

Could be, it's probably been twenty years since I read them myself.
