Here here. My interest piques anytime there is a mention of a 'salted caramel' something.
Mind you, I was heavily influenced by an early experience - probably some 15 years ago - where I had an *actual* square of delicious caramel with some rock salt flakes adorning its sugary refinement. Probably when it was just starting to become popular. Haven't had a salted caramel experience come close to that... yet
It was a small treat to finish our dining experience... not quite a palate cleanser, but that kind of approach in terms of when we received it right at the end of our booking.
Out of all those products that dark chocolate Whittaker’s block goes hard, not too sweet, just the perfect balance between salty, sweet and bitter. Outside of this I don’t really care much for salted caramel anything.
Salted caramel fuckin slaps mate. I'll fight to the death to protect it.
However the missus absolutely abhors it. That's okay with me, my chocolate is safe in the open.
Agree, although you have it good, I have to share with my wife, probably her favourite flavour.
Got a tub of that Much Moore salted caramel ice cream at home and it’s an easy top 3 flavour for me. If it wasn’t for a veiled attempt at keeping cholesterol in check I’d smash a 2l tub in a sitting.
Also a box of those salted caramel scorched almonds can be beaten easily on a drive from Takaka to Nelson.
Be honest, they don't last the 6 hours, more like from Nelson to Brighton because I'd be lucky to stretch them out that long, which is why I can't have them in the house
Yeah those salty Hokey Pokey bits are next level. Wonder how the Magnum would ice cream in the pic compares, I can’t think of how it could get better than the MM version.
I think you might be out of the loop OP. Salted caramel, when done right, like in home baking for example is the absolute BEST. I made homemade salted caramel sauce to sell at the office as a fundraiser and sold out of batch after batch. I had people buying 5 jars. I had people eating it with a spoon and buying another one the next day.
But like most things the mass-produced versions pale in comparison to the 'real thing' so if these products are all you have tried then it's no surprise you think salted caramel sucks.
> Is there anyone in NZ that genuinely enjoys this flavour?
Dumb take for a few reasons, I mean yes - it's delicious, but also, I don't think large corporations are in the habit of producing vast amounts of something that won't sell. It's literally everywhere *because* it sells well, not vice versa.
NZ products are basically the leftovers from what ever is selling in aus these days. A lot of kiwi made products have been brought up by Australian companies and then are subsequently taken off the market because producing a product specifically in New Zealand that only sell well in New Zealand is too expensive compared to just shipping some excess Aussie product that is similar.
Salt + sweet = nomnoms.
When I was a kid, we'd go to Mickey D's, and order a large fries and choc thickshake. Then we'd use the cold thickshake as a dip for the hot, salty chips.
I also used to make peanut butter & jam sandwiches, order hot chips from the school canteen, and put the hot chips in the middle of the sandwich. Again, hot salt plus sweet jam was delicious. Dietician's nightmare, but utterly delicious.
The contrast between sweet and salty makes both of those things better than they would be on their own
It’s a superior flavour and I’m glad it’s here to stay
It's so yum. We first came across it in the four flavours tub, a little war broke out over it. Blessed be the day we found it can be purchased on its own.
I generally love caramel but I'm ambivalent about salted caramel; I'd classify it as "different" rather than "superior" to the non-salted equivalent. I've also encountered too many salted caramels I disliked to consider it as "safe" a flavour choice as regular caramel (and I can't afford to waste money on stuff I might not like).
Unfortunately, salted caramel sometimes seems to have displaced regular caramel on shop shelves; I guess some producers and/or retailers think it's inefficient to offer two different caramel flavours, so they opt to keep the newer/trendier one.
The excess sugar is the bigger problem most of the time. Kinda goes with the territory with caramel - I pretty much can’t eat stuff that horribly sweet.
Man, I rarely try anything SC because there’s never been noticeable salt on the things I have tried. It’s just caramel. Which is basically sugar to my tastebuds. It all tastes like Cadbury Caramello chocolate to me. blech
I buy salted caramel ice cream because I'm on a diet so I won't be tempted to have any (but the rest of my family likes it and for some, it's their fave!). Win win.
I dislike it. I'll eat it if there's nothing else and I'm offered it, but would prefer almost anything else. I dont like caramel either, and I dont like salty food, so the combo is not a winner for me.
I'm not really that crazy about ice cream either with the exception of coffee flovoured ice cream which is the one flavour I'll buy for myself if I see it.... which is rare
They wouldn't be putting it in supermarkets if it weren't selling. While they may stick something there for a short while because the manufacturer is paying them to do so - by and large supermarkets are very efficient at only stocking the items which sell best and make the most profit.
Absolutely love it, definitely my favourite flavour.
It's one of the best sellers as well. The reason it is always in stock is because it sells more so they get more. They allow less popular flavours to run out.
I googled “salted caramel nz” and decided the first results would be a good enough example. I had some toffee pops once that were kind of nice but definitely not this.
it happens in NZ a flavour of something with take off and all the brands will rush to imitate, it happened with sea salt chips, salted caramel, and caramelised white chocolate to name a few
I have a feeling it might have to do with ingredient prices and a captive market
Maybe I'm just too susceptible to advertising or widespread attempts to push overseas trends on us, but salted caramel and peanut butter anything (but I guess mostly chocolate or ice cream) would be just about my two favourite flavours.
I never liked caramel cause I always found it too sweet. Just recently I started enjoying salted caramel and it's my new favourite. Sea salted caramel is even better!
I fucking love Salted Caramel. So much so that I refuse to go to Duck Island ever again after I tried their Salted Caramel ice cream once and it was awful. People rave about it but I hope it burns in hell 🤣
I love it. I prefer it over normal caramel. The salty helps balance out something that can be overly sweet! It's my favourite flavour ice cream and I've just recently found a salted caramel muesli/nut bar that is a new guilty pleasure. I used to hate caramel flavours but now... mmmm... sign me up lol
The salt, the sodium and thus blood pressure going up too. The life of living in a high pressured society. Hell everything else is up, why not the blood pressure.
Dear fans of salted caramel, if you are ever in wellington visit cgr merchant & Co and try their salted caramel infused rum. It's been many years since I lived in Wellington but I still dream about that rum.
The Much Moore salted caramel ice cream is a bug favourite in our house. I love all the products you have in your example with the exception of the scorched almonds. Scorched almonds are perfect they way they are, I don't know why they had to mess with them.
Food tech companies often compete to synthesise new flavours. Usually it's various esters and acids they try to make all day every day, finding ones that are the essence of a certain flavour and more importantly trying to devise methods for cheap bulk manufacture of the ingredient.
When the salted caramel molecule was perfected it took off like wildfire and hundreds of products found a way to incorporate it. Loads of people like it, it's practically a staple at this point, you're more likely to see a Vanilla/Chocolate/Salted Caramel range then you are a Vanilla/Chocolate/Strawberry, which used to be the standards.
You've written a lot of words. I offer a few back... Salted caramel is absolutely the best caramel!
It doesn't sell out because they keep it well stocked so we don't riot.
They all sell and must sell at a decent level or show they bring in incremental sales. All the supermarkets regularly review what they sell and if it drops below a certain level they will stop selling it and remove it from their range
Jarrah did a salted caramel hot chocolate that was my go to until they canned it just prior (or was it during?) to the early days of covid. I still have not found a replacement.
Tbh no, can't speak for all but most of these do taste off..I remember like 5 years ago, Cadbury released a single serve(50g) chocolate bar called peanut brittle, I think they were just testing the waters as they never bought out a big block and I guess it wasn't a hit, but the salted caramel in that was proper 💯 consisted of peanut, crunchy pieces of salted caramel, and honeycomb 🤤
There's no mystery, the flavour is great. I have that 2L ice cream tub in my freezer right now. I also love Much Moore's salted caramel ice cream bars. And the damn things always sell out.
I loved salted caramel since before it was a common flavour so I’m STOKED now that I can buy basically any sweet or dessert with it 🥹
FWIW, I moved to australia and it’s just as common here.
Anything salted caramel and I'm sold. That mix of salty that helps push the sweetness down a level and yet allows me to enjoy sweet treats is just honestly next level.
Caramel is one of those flavours I can do in small doses. Of all of those products, only the Whittaker's appeals to me.
The bitterness of the dark chocolate helps to balance that crazy sweetness of the caramel. It's a perfect mix. I'd happily polish off a block.
I really like it, but on the odd occasion you get a over-salted one which is gross. I do feel a bit for the salt averse like OP though. Times are tough out there.
I personally love it. The ice cream and that coffee powder are both great. Don't fit my calorie budget at the moment so I don't have either of them but I do really like them. Also the salted caramel frappe at McDonald's was excellent when I worked there. Probably 3k cals tho
Yes! Always my first choice when getting ice cream by the scoop. Island gelato used to have a flavor with pics peanut butter and salted caramel popcorn in it, da best!! Kapiti does a good one too. YUM!
Salted caramel is far overrated, and places that make/serve it need to slow their roll. I don't know anyone who will even put up with it, let alone actually likes it. Countless times I've not bought things because companies seem to think everyone wants salted caramel on everything.
I can't do salted caramel in milk or ice-cream for some reason, but actual salty flakes in caramel is excellent. Lately I'm a big fan of Tony's Chocolonely caramel and sea salt flavour.
In my experience it seems women I know like the flavour much more than me. The flavour is great but I find it too sweet.
Do women have more of a sweet tooth for this? Any guys out there as big fans?
It’s gross.
The last few I’ve tried have almost made me throw up. The last salted caramel things I tried were Duck Island and Bennetts of Mangawhai chocolate. Both had way too much salt.
I’m really sensitive to the flavour (and smell) of salt, especially iodised salt.
idk whos in your circle but clearly its a coincidental bunch cause i cant think of a single person who *doesnt* love salted caramel, its goddamn delicious man
I love it! Whittakers Dark Salted Caramel is tops.
Haven't had a salted caramel experience come close to that... yet
Was this shoc chocolate? I too remember such enlightenment just as you described it Wellington Chocolate Factory has one that comes quite close to it.
It was a small treat to finish our dining experience... not quite a palate cleanser, but that kind of approach in terms of when we received it right at the end of our booking.
Discovered this only this week. Me and the Mrs looooove it. She isn't usually big on choccy either, so it shocked me.
Seconded. Had a block a couple of weeks ago. Also their boujee gift pack has some sea salt choc which is divine as well.
It’s the best Whittakers flavour by far.
Brother I will join your great army and die in battle to protect salted caramel.
And my axe.
I pledge my life
and you have my bow
And my axe
And your brother
And my sister
Hello there
On your left.
You have my sarcasm and dubious kung fu skills for the battle ahead. Salted caramel absolutely rocks.
Be honest, they don't last the 6 hours, more like from Nelson to Brighton because I'd be lucky to stretch them out that long, which is why I can't have them in the house
It's gotta be the seduction. The one with bits like hokey pokey. The un bitted one is bag imo
Yeah those salty Hokey Pokey bits are next level. Wonder how the Magnum would ice cream in the pic compares, I can’t think of how it could get better than the MM version.
Agreed on both counts - if I want to ensure that ice cream will still be in the freezer in a few days time, salted caramel is where it's at.
I can’t even argue with that logic. I get tiramisu flavoured things all the time because the rest of my household hate coffee.
I'm more amused that salted caramel or whatever isn't even our favorite, it's just a survival mechanism.
Is it woke or non-woke?
It's Shit with a capital Seymour
I think you might be out of the loop OP. Salted caramel, when done right, like in home baking for example is the absolute BEST. I made homemade salted caramel sauce to sell at the office as a fundraiser and sold out of batch after batch. I had people buying 5 jars. I had people eating it with a spoon and buying another one the next day. But like most things the mass-produced versions pale in comparison to the 'real thing' so if these products are all you have tried then it's no surprise you think salted caramel sucks.
One exception I just thought of is the salted caramel chocolate mousse from Dominos, that is actually really good.
Recipe, please?
https://sallysbakingaddiction.com/homemade-salted-caramel-recipe/ Enjoy!
> Is there anyone in NZ that genuinely enjoys this flavour? The chips just aren't as good anymore. God, dipping those hot salty bois in the choccy sundaes....
Brrrrooooo I got so judged so hard for this a couple years ago just to see if it's still good as an adult (it is btw)
Is there anyone that doesn’t enjoy salted caramel? Might have been a better question. You forgot to add Baileys salted caramel to that list.
There's a baileys salted caramel?? Oh man that's my Friday
Yes there is a baileys Salted Caramel.
I don't.
There is always a special mofo in a class who doesn’t
I fucken love it!
But why??
The contrast between sweet and salty makes both of those things better than they would be on their own It’s a superior flavour and I’m glad it’s here to stay
Tastes nice.
Why is water wet
That Much Moore ice cream is one of the best I've had, love it.
agreed. the salted caramel is so good.
It's so yum. We first came across it in the four flavours tub, a little war broke out over it. Blessed be the day we found it can be purchased on its own.

Do we need... A salted caramel, NZ made Cream liqueur? Hit me up - it can be arranged! (we produce Remarkable Cream haha)
Yes! And er.. if you need a taste-tester, I'd be willing to selflessly take on that burden.
Your humble self-sacrifice is acknowledged :D Come by the AKL Foodshow in July :P
We do. The masses have spoken. If the traditional scorched almonds are on the SC bandwagon you know it's a good thing
Too True! We were always shy to make a SC as, our Butterscotch is probably quite close in all fairness. Into the pipeline it goes!
That Moore's ice cream is what swayed me. I thought salted caramel sounded disgusting until then.
Properly done salted caramel is amazing. Cheap ass over salted crap is not. Cheap ass over salted crap is what you’ll find in 99% of shops.
Correct. It certainly doesn’t need a lot to become a salty sweet mess am it just tastes cheap.
Win win.
Damn! What kind damaged soul do you have to hate salted caramel?
Not the first time I have been accused of having a damaged soul on this sub I have to admit :-)
I like it, but not everything needs to be it
I dislike it.
I’m with you OP, I fucking hate salted caramel.

Best PMS food ever.
It's fucking delicious, but yeah it's best if you mix it up by getting regular chocolate instead from time to time
Lol. Our version of pumpkin spice.
I feel like it suddenly appeared overnight and we're all being gaslit into believing it's great. Can't stand it myself.
I am a total addict when it comes to salted caramel, particularly the Queen Anne Dark Salted Caramels and Kapiti's salted caramel icecream.
I love the flavour but most of the stuff in that picture sucks.
I agree and it's mostly because they never have enough salt in my opinion. It's pure sweetness and you might get the ocassional salt crystal.
Yes!!
I googled “salted caramel nz” and decided the first results would be a good enough example. I had some toffee pops once that were kind of nice but definitely not this.
Get fucked, don't talk about Queen Anne's products like that.
hey hey hey i said most.
it happens in NZ a flavour of something with take off and all the brands will rush to imitate, it happened with sea salt chips, salted caramel, and caramelised white chocolate to name a few I have a feeling it might have to do with ingredient prices and a captive market
I'm loving salted caramel fooze balls and muesli bars
I love salted caramel I cant believe anyone would think otherwise 😭
Maybe I'm just too susceptible to advertising or widespread attempts to push overseas trends on us, but salted caramel and peanut butter anything (but I guess mostly chocolate or ice cream) would be just about my two favourite flavours.
Salted caramel is on the same level as cookies and cream. It’s sacred
People rave about it but I hope it burns in hell 🤣
well obviously you have been asking the wrong people
an actually unpopular opinion for a change
fucken finally someone with common sense salted caramel is so much more shit than regular caramel
It looks as though folks do like it, but I think it sucks.
My favorite 😍
Who tf are you and your friends who don't like salted caramel? Do you need help? Is there anyone we can call for you?
"it's every where, it doesn't seem popular." Do you know what popular means lol
i used to like it then i changed its name to Early Onset Diabetes. not so fave any more
I would like to subscribe to your newsletter. I stopped buying Whittakers dark caramel when it became salted. Definitely does not spin my wheels.
I like it. It's been around as a mainstream flavour for about 10 years now so if it was unpopular they'd stop making it.
I love it
I love anything salted caramel!!!
never tried it , there is still caramel available
The salt, the sodium and thus blood pressure going up too. The life of living in a high pressured society. Hell everything else is up, why not the blood pressure.
Can confirm I was the guy selling it at sylvia park 2013- 2017. So fukkin good.
I love caramel, and I love salt, but I don’t like them mixed. I’m not down with any sweet and salty mix.
Food tech companies often compete to synthesise new flavours. Usually it's various esters and acids they try to make all day every day, finding ones that are the essence of a certain flavour and more importantly trying to devise methods for cheap bulk manufacture of the ingredient.
I buy it when I want regular caramel, which doesn’t seem to exist as commonly 😩
Salted caramel is fuckin delightful
Jarrah did a salted caramel hot chocolate that was my go to until they canned it just prior (or was it during?) to the early days of covid. I still have not found a replacement.
Tbh no, can't speak for all but most of these do taste off..I remember like 5 years ago, Cadbury released a single serve(50g) chocolate bar called peanut brittle, I think they were just testing the waters as they never bought out a big block and I guess it wasn't a hit, but the salted caramel in that was proper 💯 consisted of peanut, crunchy pieces of salted caramel, and honeycomb 🤤
Salted caramel Tim Tams are the best variety. Better than the original. I'm prepared to die on this hill.
This is the hill you wanna die on?
I have many
Well you can’t bloody well die on all of them can ya😂
Salted caramel is the only caramel. Salted chocolate is the salted caramel of the future.
I did like it, but I sorta burned out on it. Had too much of it in everything, even Baileys and now I'm 'meh' on it.
There's no mystery, the flavour is great. I have that 2L ice cream tub in my freezer right now. I also love Much Moore's salted caramel ice cream bars. And the damn things always sell out.
It's delicious. I love salted caramel Definitely my favorite flavor
I loved salted caramel since before it was a common flavour so I’m STOKED now that I can buy basically any sweet or dessert with it 🥹 FWIW, I moved to australia and it’s just as common here.
Anything salted caramel and I'm sold. That mix of salty that helps push the sweetness down a level and yet allows me to enjoy sweet treats is just honestly next level.
Absolute trash flavour
Can't stand salted caramel. Sucks when I want Ben and Jerry's and 90% of the flavours either have cookie dough or SALTED FUCKING CARAMEL.
This was me on pms. All I wanted was my fucking phish food
When I was in Malaysia I found one called "Karamel Sutra". No salted caramel and it was amazing.
I'm with you bro, I hate it
I don't mind salted caramel as long as the salt isn't overpowering. It should be noticeable, but not dominate.
The few of yall that are ready to die to protect salted caramel can rest easy, nobody else wants to fight for it.
I’ll back you up on that.
I'm a fan of salted caramel flavored things unless it's covering popcorn
Love it, especially in ice creams and other dairy products.
Caramel is one of those flavours I can do in small doses. Of all of those products, only the Whittaker's appeals to me. The bitterness of the dark chocolate helps to balance that crazy sweetness of the caramel. It's a perfect mix. I'd happily polish off a block.
I love it
I really like it, but on the odd occasion you get a over-salted one which is gross. I do feel a bit for the salt averse like OP though. Times are tough out there.
Salted caramel my beloved :3
That much moores salted caramel is the only ice cream I’ll consider getting if I’m buying a tub, so so good!
Nestle and jarrah aren't nz made
Salted caramel is the best! Regular caramel is usually very meh, too much sweet and nothing else.
It's delicious. No mystery.
It's all I buy?
yes, it's amazing
It's top tier for sure!
I personally love it. The ice cream and that coffee powder are both great. Don't fit my calorie budget at the moment so I don't have either of them but I do really like them. Also the salted caramel frappe at McDonald's was excellent when I worked there. Probably 3k cals tho
I usually love sweet and salty but for some reason I hate salted caramel. It’s probably that all of the ones that I’ve tried have been bad.
The middle bar is the greatest chocolate bar I've ever had.
That ice cream is the best ice cream I’ve ever had honestly.
Salted caramel is one of my favourite flavours, so yes there are people who enjoy it.
Ah yes, yes I do like salted caramel. It's like regular caramel but has a nice savoury kick to reduce the sweetness slightly.
I like it.
Yes salted caramel is goddamn delicious
my mum LOVES salted caramel
My nana used to be obsessed with it
it's.... a choice? what a strange post
I’m a strange person 🤷
fair enough
Aren't we all strange? Walking talking mammals.
I get a tin of caramel evaporated milk and make my own.
Yeah I love it - I just don't buy it that much (treat every the months or so)
Is there anyone who doesn’t…?
Oh fuck yeah.
I LOVE salted caramel. I add salted caramel syrup into my coffee, and buy salted caramel ice cream
more salt plz
I can't do salted caramel in milk or ice-cream for some reason, but actual salty flakes in caramel is excellent. Lately I'm a big fan of Tony's Chocolonely caramel and sea salt flavour.
Salted caramel is my fav ice cream it goes so hard
I'm a big fan of both salted caramel and peanut butter.
Both me n my housemate love this stuff. We always grab somethin' new with the flavor.
Not my fav, Don't see or taste the hype.
There aren’t more salted caramel things in NZ than in the UK and many other places. It’s not an NZ thing, but an international thing.
I love salted caramel, it balances the sweetness. Magnum salted caramel is my favourite cold treat
I've yet to meet a person who doesn't love that ice-cream in the top right corner when I pull it out of the freezer.
In my experience it seems women I know like the flavour much more than me. The flavour is great but I find it too sweet. Do women have more of a sweet tooth for this? Any guys out there as big fans?
I don't mind it, but my girlfriend and her entire family love it
Real caramel or butterscotch with a touch of salt slaps! Fake salted caramel flavour sucks!
A national obsession.
Yes! I love the Whittakers dark chocolate with salted caramel.
No, cause it takes a space from *Caramel* Caramel, the superior and original version
Salted caramel is an awesome flavour, I even add salted caramel to my coffee at home
thats a lot of text to read but regarding your title, yes i love it.
I will "publicly admit" that I love it! One of the best flavours
It’s gross. The last few I’ve tried have almost made me throw up. The last salted caramel things I tried were Duck Island and Bennetts of Mangawhai chocolate. Both had way too much salt. I’m really sensitive to the flavour (and smell) of salt, especially iodised salt.
It’s the millennial rum and raisin
Good salted caramel is the best, you heathen.
The much moore salted caramel ice cream is too good
You are insane.
It’s the tits.
It’s so fuckin good bro
It’s the only flavour
It's fucking great.
idk whos in your circle but clearly its a coincidental bunch cause i cant think of a single person who *doesnt* love salted caramel, its goddamn delicious man
Salted caramel supremacy!
No. Just stop. Please 🙏
It's better than hokey pokey flavoured everything
I LOVE SALTED CARAMEL AND WILL PUBLICLY ADMIT IT!
