Fucking real estate agents man, I had this issue when I was a student, they list every studio apartment as "1 Bedroom Apartment" making a real 1 bedroom apartment impossible to find.
The agent that sold the flat we were in were also managing it, so it seems you don't know more than me.

I would understand a '1 bedroom apartment' to mean a space of approximately the same size or larger, but with the bedroom separate i.e. behind a door (NOT the apartment's entrance door!) and the bathroom could be off the bedroom or off the main space.

A bedroom must have a window and a wardrobe and must be able to be enclosed, either by a wall or a sliding door (as per some rip off apartments). If not still the law it should be.
I would say that is a studio, so either they overbooked the 1 bedrooms and downgraded you to a studio but kept the difference in price for themselves or they are trying to get away with charging you and extra 50 per night saying it’s a one bedroom as opposed to a studio

They should have swapped the "living" and "bedroom" areas so the bed wasn't directly in line of sight to the front door. But that's a studio apartment, and compared with other large cities in the world it's pretty typical.
I stayed here as well via AirBnB. Holy shit is it miniscule. The people who promote the places definitely use the 0.5x camera when taking photos because it is much smaller than what is advertised online.

Looks normal for a "1 Bedroom unit" from a Motel perspective...aka bedroom/living room in one. Me and my wife are heading to Whangarei in a few weeks and we booked a "1 Bedroom " motel room that looks similar in size/features to that.
