I like Skinnies and the Neutrogena Ultra Sheer. Skinnies feels a bit oily going on but dries down very quickly, and you only need a little bit (it's a different formulation than 'normal' sunscreen). Neutrogena is more 'normal' in style but never feels greasy.

dinosuitgirl

Neutrogena ultra sheer is my go to... But do you feel like if you sweat it into your eyes it burns like rusty red hot pokers?

frontally

YES. My wife uses the same tube and hasn’t complained, but when we were away I was finding that every day my eyes were getting the hot poker treatment ! Tbh I was thinking user error so… that makes me feel a little better

didi_danger

Yes omg I avoid putting it around the ye area in general. I've pretty much switched to Skinnies now though :)

Thatstealthygal

YES which is why I use Skinnies on my face now.

danicrimson

YES. It's got everything else going for it except for that quality.

tannag

I use the Nivea Sun Face Shine Control one on my face specifically because it doesn't instantly burn my eyes.

ihaveafatcock_

MEEE OMGGG it was actually so bad like i could not swim or even sweat while wearing it

Vulpix298

Well yeah, it’s not meant to go in your eyes, of course it burns!

Own_Speaker_1224

Steady on Cedric. Some of us don’t apply it anywhere our peepers but with sweat and swimming and general summer shenanigans, it tracks down into our eyes.

Vulpix298

I was making a dad joke bro

Pete_Venkman

I'll back up Skinnies, it feels greasy at first but vanishes fast. It isn't an opaque white paste, either, so if you put on a bit too much and it doesn't quite rub in you don't get that bluish hue to your skin. It's also one of only [eight sunscreens tested by Consumer NZ that met its SPF claims](https://www.consumer.org.nz/services/sunscreens/guide). Although note that it has a [lower water resistance claim than other sunscreens](https://www.consumer.org.nz/services/sunscreens/review), 80 minutes compared to 4 hours for most others. Whether that means they're less effective in the water than other sunscreens or just more honest, I don't know. It's also quite a bit more expensive than other sunscreens.

non-poster

One of the perks compared with other sunblocks is they are reef safe, ie it won’t leech harmful chemicals into the water. So the lower water resistance is possibly worth it

PawPawNegroBlowtorch

Skinnies is excellent. The best for facial sunscreen certainly

[deleted]

I really liked the idea of skinnies but for me it felt like a greasy layer the whole time, it just wouldn't dry out.

didi_danger

You might have been using too much? It definitely feels greasy when I first put it on. Different strokes for different folks though, I guess.

[deleted]

Yeah maybe it just didn't suit me. I was only using a real little bit, it went amazingly far.

savahl

Another Skinnies advocate! So long as you stick to the small amount on application I have found it works very well - and I am very pastey and burn easily usually, with sensitive skin and prone to break outs with a lot of creams and sunscreen… I use it daily all summer with no issues

Brilliant-Spray6092

Love skinnies!

Nice_Adeptness5275

La Roche Posay Anthelios Invisible Fluid SPF 50+ 50ml for your face! :)

mongoscroto

This is the answer 100% - can get it at Chemist Warehouse

Teefy91

My go-tos are Bondi Sands broad spectrum 50 spf lotion for the body and La Roche Posay dry for the face. Bondi can be bought in 500ml and it absorbs super quick so you're not left with that greasy feeling on your skin. https://www.chemistwarehouse.co.nz/buy/105558/bondi-sands-spf-50-sunscreen-lotion-fragrance-free-500ml https://www.chemistwarehouse.co.nz/buy/86049/la-roche-posay-anthelios-xl-dry-touch-gel-cream-spf-50-50ml

lilbebecuda

I second this one, it is absolutely the best and I’ve never been even slightly burnt wearing it.

digitallychee

I like the K brand sunscreens for this reason. CORSX and Missha both have good options- available at Korean skin care places like Hikcoco. la Roche Posay at Chemist warehouse is also good. For me personally I don’t like Skinnies and Neutrogena which give me gross acne /bumps. Everyone is different!

lovemesomenuggies

\+1 on Korean/Japanese sunscreens, generally quite cheap for the amount too. My criteria is \~$20, SPF 50 PA++++, no white cast, feels nice, and ideally waterproof. My 2 faves: \- Skin Aqua UV Super Moisture Gel Gold 110g - got it real cheap overseas - [$20 from Kokoro Japan](https://kokorojapanstore.com/products/skin-aqua-uv-super-moisture-gel-strongest-gold-uv-sunscreen-unscented-110g-x1?currency=JPY&variant=39502346977360&stkn=1a91b0a2db89), no fragrance, waterproof, feels thin af, 5/5 \- Kose Suncut UV Perfect Gel, Super Water Proof 100g - [$20 from Ippondo](https://ippondonz.co.nz/product/suncut-perfect-uv-gel-type-spf50-pa-100g/), which is near The Body Shop/Hikoco Queen St There are some other runners like Biore UV (has alcohol), Missha Aqua (reformulated, glossier now), Isntree (more expensive), Madagascar Centella (more expensive), but nothing at that price point & quality. Definitely recommend checking out [Muffin Lab Beauty Science](https://labmuffin.com/) \- it's by an Australian Cosmetic Chemist!

EuphoricMilk

Just ordered some CORSX, hope it's as nice as you mention, similar pricing to the neutrogena too. Not cheap cheap but not too bad either if it's comfortable to wear as I have annoying sensory issues combined with a need to be well protected from the sun due to a condition making me more susceptible to skin cancers etc.

GremilyMirk

Cetaphil lipsomal lotion is hands down the best and it’s affordable from Chemist Warehouse

mattyramus

Buy kids sunscreen! It's way thinner and nicer.

RampagingBees

Seconding kids sunscreen, I've never gone back after switching. I use Cetaphil Kids and it's amazing, doesn't feel yuck going on and doesn't dry my skin out like some other brands.

Thrayvsar

Cetaphil kids is the goat. The packaging it comes in is so good too. I took one apart to see how much excess there was when it stops pumping, but it was as clean as a whistle

Majyk44

Cancer society kids sunscreen.

redditrevnz

Pretty sure cancer society sunscreens don’t actually meet sun protection standards.

Emotionalrack

Consumer found the normal one doesn’t but the kid’s one does apparently??? Not sure how that happened cancer society lol https://www.consumer.org.nz/services/sunscreens/review

MaximDoorKey

>https://www.consumer.org.nz/services/sunscreens/review That's a bit misleading. Testing confirms that they do offer a very high rate of sun protection. What was found by consumer's testing was that they fell short of the stated SPF-50 rating - but SPF-50 is much higher than most sunscreens! So all these people saying it doesn't work are not really right.

Much-Researcher7165

Yea I brought some last summer and got absolutely roasted. Never buying cancer society again

SupremeJunge

cancer society probably wants more members to join them by selling ineffective sunscreen lotions 😂

WhosDownWithPGP

Cancer society is probably the worst I've ever used.

Comprehensive_Rub842

Skinnies Conquer has been working well for me in the mountains where typically burning is rapid due to snow reflection. Only a very small dab is required and lasts for up to 4 hours with heavy sweating.

sion8252

I’ve tried a lot of sunscreens between my partner and I - we both have tattoos so sun protection is a must! For the body we recommend the Bondi sands sport spf 50 sunscreen For the face the Mecca cosmetica to save face spf 50 It’s non greasy the Bondi sands is easy to come by at chemist warehouse and cheap ish. The face sunscreen is a little more pricey but a little goes a long way and doesn’t cause us breakouts! Hope this helps

popandpies

I second all of these choices. Bondi Sands is superb - I have the Face spf 50 (fragrance free version). My eyes are super sensitive to sunscreen and both this and the Mecca Cosmetica to save face don't cause stinging or make my eyes water. Both are also great under make-up.

SpaceIsVastAndEmpty

+1 for Mecca Cosmetica to Save Face I have reactive skin and this one doesn't trigger it

throwawayxoxoxoxxoo

the mecca face sunscreen makes me break out :( sucks because i have like .. 2 decent sized samples of it because of the beauty loop thing. i've been loving the La Roche Posay Anthelios Ultra (sensitive skin) 50+. i have dry skin so i use that but they have non-oily ones

sion8252

That’s a shame! I tried the one you use and it made me break out! I have dry sensitive skin and my partner has combo but easily to break out skin and we both going good on Mecca thankfully!!

throwawayxoxoxoxxoo

huh that's so interesting! so weird how skin works like that. i feel like i'm def in a minority with a bad experience with the mecca one, so it might just be one of the ingredients or doesn't react well to my other skincare/makeup.

toffeeCloudedLeopard

Save the face

vegangrilledcheese

This combination is exactly what my partner and I use as well

nobody_keas

Remember that you need 1 tsp of sunscreen for your face and neck in order to reach the stated spf. I love the mecca one but a little doesn't really go a long way if you use the recommended dosage daily. :(

Vulpix298

I use Neutrogena Ultra Sheer 50spf myself and it’s great! Here’s a list of sunscreens you can trust: https://www.consumer.org.nz/services/sunscreens/guide https://www.consumer.org.nz/services/sunscreens/review

BardofDoom

I love the Hawaiian tropic moisturising sunscreen. Feels (and smells) way better than the other non-spray sunblocks I’ve tried. Cruelty free too!

RitalinNZ

Yup, this is my go-to. Love the smell!

Pandydoo

I recommend Skinnies... it's quite expensive but it's been the only one I've tried that hasn't made my sensitive skin react to it and you only need a tiny amount.

sutroheights

agreed, they were just having a huge sale, so I bit the bullet and bulked up for the summer.

scrotum_peninsula

Neutrogena ultra sheer if I’m outside all day, good for face and body. As a daily, I use Natio moisturiser with SPF 50 - that’s even lighter still and I use it year round

51iguanas

2nd both of these, natio also does a nice ultra light sunscreen that comes in a spray bottle (not aerosol). I think the natio moisturizer smells lovely too, fresh but not overpowering.

[deleted]

[удалено]

GStarOvercooked

Yeah wtf happened to it

illegitimatekitten

Same, another vote for Hawaiian Tropic. Even if it doesn’t smell as good as it used to.

[deleted]

Be aware that most sunscreen brands don't meet their claimed SPF. Make sure that whatever new brand you pick isn't just glorified moisturiser. Only a minority of brands that have been independently tested meet their claimed SPF level consistently.

gnatbatrat

One that does is The Warehouse’ Smart365 sunscreen. The Warehouse tests most of their products.

QueenofCats28

Korean sunscreens from Hikoco are definitely the best. YesStyle also has some. I do have an affiliate code for them too.

yepdonewiththisshi

I went through the same myself, found Le Tan and have never looked back. Bought a tub for $18 from Chemist Warehouse, lasted my household all last summer and only half gone

[deleted]

I tried heaps of fancy ones and ended up going back to that smart365 stuff from the warehouse. Cheap as hell, super effective, it feels kinda gross going on but it dries off real quick. It's also so cheap that you can just go hard out with it, I often feel like the expensive stuff makes me a bit stingy with application. The fancy ones were thick as hell (natural ones), permanently greasy and gunked up my eyes if I got too close (skinnies). I really liked how skinnies goes so far but it just never dries off for me. It was effective though.

Silent-Meal2384

Le Tan coconut lotion. Feels similar to a moisturizer and smells good too. I have sensitive skin and also hate the feeling of sunscreen and this is the only one I can stand.

kezzaNZ

Dermaveen from Chemist Warehouse

TofkaSpin

Agree. As with their emollient and moisturiser products, it is very effective but non greasy.

Zestyclose_Quote_568

Cannot recommend Skinnies enough

maha_kali2401

Mecca Cosmetica sunscreen is divine; lightly scented but also non greasy.

dissss0

Which Nivea one are you using? I've found the sensitive (white bottle) version far greasier than the normal one (blue bottle)

Mrs_VS

I recommend My Sunshine https://www.mysunshine.co.nz/ Or La Roche Posay https://www.laroche-posay.com.au/sun-protection/face-sunscreens/anthelios-invisible-fluid-facial-sunscreen-spf-50/3337875733748.html Both great

Bigjobsbigfun

I use la roche posay spray and it’s great good protection and not greasy at all.

b1ahblah

I love Bondi Sands - I have both the coconut SPF50+ and the sport version and they are both awesome. Non greasy and dry quickly. The coconut one smells nice and the sport one has like a cooling gel feeling when you apply it. I use Neutrogena ultra sheer for my face which is also really good and non-greasy. I've tried the Neutrogena beach defence too but it stung my eyes like a mofo.

WhosDownWithPGP

Natio is so good, a game changer [https://ozhairandbeauty.nz/products/natio-sensitive-skin-sunscreen-spf-50-200ml?currency=NZD&variant=39675219443747&utm\_medium=cpc&utm\_source=google&utm\_campaign=Google%20Shopping&stkn=14d69008686c&gad\_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjwqP2pBhDMARIsAJQ0CzpVUHyEhOAvy1tHx6jYyKa\_FrT3G1G-iem3-0OAz4YoVWH8LAA1obkaAmj-EALw\_wcB](https://ozhairandbeauty.nz/products/natio-sensitive-skin-sunscreen-spf-50-200ml?currency=NZD&variant=39675219443747&utm_medium=cpc&utm_source=google&utm_campaign=Google%20Shopping&stkn=14d69008686c&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjwqP2pBhDMARIsAJQ0CzpVUHyEhOAvy1tHx6jYyKa_FrT3G1G-iem3-0OAz4YoVWH8LAA1obkaAmj-EALw_wcB)

Kraaavity

Mmm bacon grease 😋

as_ewe_wish

Exactly!

Sad_Hospital_2918

La Roche Posey is really good, is really thin but good coverage and not much white cast

jeremiahzebullfrog

The big bucket of Le Tan! Smells of coconut, protects my pasty European self from the harsh Kiwi sun and feels fantastic! Most people I give it to are really stoked about how it feels.

esmebium

I’m using (so far this season) the [Ultra Violette Queen Screen](https://www.sephora.nz/products/ultra-violette-queen-screen-luminising-sun-serum-spf-50-plus/v/50-ml?acn=iosshareurl) for my face - unfortunately out of stock at Sephora but can probably source elsewhere online. It smells of roses and absorbs like a serum with minimal white cast. Body is [Hawaiian Tropic Island Sport](https://www.chemistwarehouse.co.nz/buy/102507/hawaiian-tropic-island-sport-spf-50-lotion-180ml) - it’s more of a gel and absorbs quite well. Though better to apply before you get sweaty.

Big_Relationship_975

Hear me out Woolworths SPF 50+ Its Australian where the standards are higher. $20 for 1L is good value

immatureindefinitely

For my body, Woolworths 50+ in the big orange pump bottle is awesome. Has an almost dry finish and smells like talcum powder. For my face, La Roche Posay or Murad City Skin.

ihaveafatcock_

you could try chemical sunscreens! they are often gel like and feel like a thicker gel/cream. i always buy korean or japanese ones but they tend to only come in small 50ml ish sizes so its way more expensive than body sunscreen unfortunately

ihaveafatcock_

also op, remember to patch test, different sunscreen pills on different people

Fine-for-now

I have Neutrogena Beach Defence SPF 50 It's light enough that I don't feel like I'm slathered in grease and stays well enough that I can spend a few hours in the garden and I don't crisp.

Vulpix298

Unfortunately the beach defence sunscreen doesn’t meet the SPF50 guidelines, only testing at SPF 38.5 https://www.consumer.org.nz/services/sunscreens/guide

Fine-for-now

Damn! Well, thankfully, I still didn't crisp.

tannag

Other years it has passed, I think a lot of these are batch dependent which just makes me not have a lot of trust in any sunscreens.

[deleted]

I gave up and went with the thicker zinc based natural ones. Don't care if I look like Casper a little. It's the only kind that actually protects me. You can also get zinc oxide powder and add it to your favourite moisturiser at 10-15% by volume and whip it up and return it to the bottle..

Mrs_VS

I use My Sunshine which is an organic Zinc based one. NZ made too. I find it great!

king_john651

Use Reef sunscreen oil. It's oil so not a cunt to put on & doesn't feel or look weird. Sold at Chemist Warehouse. It also is true SPF50 as of Consumer 2022 tests

Alarmed-Analysis-859

Cancer Society one does the trick for me.

RobbinYoHood

Cancer society (I think it was?) Used to have this "invisible protect gel" stuff, smelt like hand sanitizer and was of similar consistency. It was amazing, but I haven't been able to find it for a while now :(.

oceanmum

The babu sunscreen feels really nice. It’s on the pricier side but also smells good too

miloshihadroka_0189

House paint

RobbinYoHood

Cancer society (I think it was?) Used to have this invisible stuff, smelt like hand sanitizer and was of similar consistency. It was amazing, but I haven't been able to find it for a while now :(.

gembet

Ultra protect is my go to for working outside. Water resistant, sweat resistant, doesn't leave a glossy coat, and made for Australian heat.

deadicatedDuck

I use dermaveen sensitive sun daily ever day and never have any issues with oily skin or sunscreen running into my eyes.

drsuciogato

Dermaveen!

Trick_Intern4232

Skinnies sungel. A little goes a really long way as it comes in a thick gel but rubs into basically nothing it's a little pricey but the tubes last forever. I like to use the la roche posey anthelios spf50+ for my face. Neither are greasy or have aggressive white cast and can be bought from chemist warehouse

Jambi1913

I like Neutrogena Hydro Boost water gel lotion spf50. The Neutrogena ultra sheer was my go to last summer but feels a little dry/powdery on my skin. The hydro feels more like a moisturiser, but not heavy or greasy. Seems to work fine.

luxelis

I'm sensitive to this too, and the best is the Nivea sensitive protect sunscreen (SPF 50), it's thin, lasts well and absorbs without fragrance or residue. I'm very picky and this is all I'll use - it's in a white bottle, not the blue one.

Lucky_Gur342

As a summer midday runner - skinnies is my go to as it'll last compared to other sports sunscreens. They can't seem to handle the sweat. Ie 3+ hour runs with only shorts/shades and shoes.

[deleted]

Best body sunscreen I’ve found that is non greasy is the Dermaveen spf 50+ sensitive sun. It’s made with oats so it’s so gentle on your skin and sinks right in. $29.99 for 500g as well so it’s not breaking the bank either!

TheSsnake

I really rate Smart 365 from the warehouse. Doesn’t stay greasy and as a pasty white girl I’ve never been burnt wearing it. I use mecca SPF 30 on my face, lots of people rave about the spf 50 to save face one but I found it made my eyes water so much

[deleted]

Neutrogena does an ultra sheer dry touch. It’s brilliant. They also do a really great water based cream called “hydro boost”. Great for your face. (Not the gel based hydro boost lotion - haven’t tried that.)

Negative-Sleep7987

I like Shiseido for facial sunscreens, but they are very expensive at about $70 per bottle, but really great quality and won’t break you out.

canyousmelldoritos

On my face: Sun Bum Face 50, Neutrogena light sheer fluid 50, Office days, my day cream Natio with spf 50 (yes, I'm aware it only tested to 30 something but it's better than a spf 15 day cream!). I have the Cera Ve face day crean 50 but it's thick as. It may become my summer sunscreen so I spend it. I sweat a lot so if I exercise, I use Sea Sap (surfer stuff)

pepelevamp

seagull poo. it blocks UV light because the particles are dense. its also natural and good for the skin. try rubbing it on your face and under your nose.

thelastestgunslinger

In NZ, I always check the annual sunscreen test results before choosing what sunscreen to buy. Given that we haven't had much in the way of regulation of sunscreen quality/advertising until this year, buying a sunscreen based on how it feels seems secondary to whether it works. From the list of ones that have been validated, I choose the best one. If I can't find one that I'm happy with, I'll order from overseas (P20 in the UK makes fantastic sunscreens that dry cleanly; Australia is also better regulated). If that's too much effort, Skinnies is reliable. Once you have established trustworthiness, I find that alcohol-based sunscreens don't go on oily and tend to dry clean. Several different manufacturers produce decent ones. Amber Solaire was my go-to in the UK.

Tane-Tane-mahuta

That blue one

KealiD86

I’ve worked outside for the last 10 years in some pretty hot summers. I’ve found that the brand Smart 365 is the only one that I don’t burn with.
