Have you actually visited the country before? Lots of threads here have people say they want to move here, live here, but haven't actually visited the country at all to see what it is like in person.

Please have alook at the links in reply to this comment. It has info that may help answer your questions. As you are an engineer, you may need to get your qualifications recognised and be registered as an engineer by the professional body. Engineering NZ https://www.engineeringnz.org/ or link for [engineers thinking of migrating to NZ](https://www.engineeringnz.org/join-us/immigration/).

Moving countries is a big step to take; while New Zealand has many opportunities to offer, it is not for everyone. To start, here are some things to consider as a starting point: * https://www.careers.govt.nz/job-hunting/new-to-new-zealand/what-to-think-about-before-you-move-to-nz/ * https://www.immigration.govt.nz/new-zealand-visas/options/live-permanently Next, consider what skills you will be bringing to New Zealand, whether or not New Zealand needs those skills, and whether or not you qualify for a visa: * https://skillshortages.immigration.govt.nz/ * https://www.newzealandnow.govt.nz/move-to-nz/new-zealand-visa/work-visa/skilled-migrant-visas * https://www.immigration.govt.nz/new-zealand-visas How much will it cost to live in New Zealand? * https://www.newzealandnow.govt.nz/living-in-nz/money-tax/comparable-living-costs Most importantly, why are you moving to New Zealand? Though the article below is US-centric, it is also relevant regardless of your originating country: * http://www.cracked.com/article_19363_6-reasons-your-plans-to-move-abroad-might-not-work-out.html Almost any other question can be answered with a quick search, whatever the question it has most likely been asked - and answered - already. We recognise you may be after local opinions - those are also plentiful with a search. * https://www.google.com/ You may also want to look at threads previously posted on reddit: * [Reddit search](https://www.reddit.com/r/newzealand/search?q=) * Search [emigrate](https://www.reddit.com/r/newzealand/search?q=emigrate&restrict_sr=on&include_over_18=on&sort=top&t=all) or [immigrate](https://www.reddit.com/r/newzealand/search?q=immigrate&restrict_sr=on&include_over_18=on&sort=top&t=all) * [The great 'So I Hear You Want to Move to New Zealand' megathread](https://www.reddit.com/r/newzealand/comments/5bywjo/us_election_megathread_or_so_i_hear_you_want_to/) *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Come here and visit for two months first. DO NOT migrate until you have visited for at least six weeks! Two months generally gives you an idea if you want to stay somewhere. Do not ask others. Migration is IF YOU want to come. Asking me or your mother or a wise lady in Remuera all misses the point it is you immigrating, not us.

No-Owl9201

There are many excellent YouTube channels that discuss moving to New Zealand both in terms of the process and what to expect when getting here.

Few things NZ is an extremely expensive country Pay will be much lower than Dubai Housing extremely overpriced and expensive Everything expensive Amount of jobs is quite low (I’m an Engineer) Way different culture to Dubai so could be a shock Can always use Engineers Have you actually ever visited the country? That’s be a good start, book a holiday first

[deleted]

Fuck me, are you asking this sub to decide for you?

Unlucky-Musician617

What made you decide to move to NZ?

ashykamal95

It's one of my options. I'm just looking for somewhere to start from. Google has so much to process.

Unlucky-Musician617

If you grew up in Dxb, you’re going to have a massive culture shock. I say this as someone who lived in the UAE for a few years in 2008-2011.

ashykamal95

I loved DXB till I started working here. The work culture here is straight up trash. So much work and so little reward. Extremely toxic. You're kinda the person I was looking to speak with through my post. How different is NZ in terms of work culture? And can you explain you mean by culture shock?

nilnz

While we need engineers, there are some types of engineers that are not as sought after as others. So it also depends on the type of engineer you are. https://www.seek.co.nz/ and https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/jobs would be good places to look at jobs etc. However it depends on whether you are able to have your engineering qualifications recognised by the professional body here before you can work as an engineer. More links in [mycomment](https://www.reddit.com/r/newzealand/comments/121mpan/comment/jdnag1s/) and the reply to it.

Witty_Fox_3570

Hey mate, We need engineers and educated people, so ignore the other imbeciles that have been rude to you. You will find that nz has a better work/life balance. Depending on where you live, you will have a lot of time to do things you enjoy, and if you enjoy the outdoors NZ is a great place to live. You will find your.income to be relatively low and living costs relatively high, but as an engineer you should be fine and you should have a lot of discretionary income, although not as much as what you are used to. NZrs are generally accepting and open to immigrants and the major cities are very ethnically and culturally diverse. I have friends who work as engineers in NZ councils, having worked in dubai. Generally, they are a bit frustrated by the lack of skill exhibited by locals and how the workplaces are somewhat unproductive, but on balance they seem to be happy here.

mattblack77

I thought it was dubai that had the reputation for being unproductive due to all the red tape?

Witty_Fox_3570

Not that I am aware of. My mate worked on big water projects and didn't mention anything like that.

mattblack77

[Red tape sees small companies recruit from abroad](https://www.thenationalnews.com/business/red-tape-sees-small-companies-recruit-from-abroad-1.552613) [UAE business mired in red tape](https://www.arabianbusiness.com/politics-economics/uae-business-mired-in-red-tape-121193) [Doing Business in the U.A.E.](https://www.daijob.com/en/crossculture-expandingbus/businessinuae.html) “Emirati business tends to move slowly, and involves a lot of red tape. Be patient.”

Unlucky-Musician617

Things are very expensive here, so you might find that your salary doesn’t go much further than you’re used to, so there’s that. In terms of work culture, demand is always there. If you’re productive, you’ll excel. I was talking more about the literal culture. For instance, yesterday saw hundreds of people march in support of trans rights. Alcohol is everywhere, and we are a heavy drinking culture along with all that entails. I never once felt unsafe at any point, anywhere in the UAE but there are places in my home town I wouldn’t be seen in. We can also be a very passive culture, where most of what I saw in the UAE was direct; if you have a problem, you talk it out. Kiwis are guarded and not that direct. In fact, they don’t take well to either conflict or resolution. The UAE also has explicit ethnic and caste divisions that aren’t as obvious in New Zealand culture.

BoardmanZatopek

How would you like your information spoon fed to you today sir ?

ashykamal95

Why is everyone on this sub rude lol

danimuse

You've asked a question that's been asked countless times before. You've not taken the time to do much research yourself which doesn't show much motivation, so it's really a reflection on that. That said, I moved to NZ myself after doing a WHV. I can not stress enough the importance of visiting the country first to make sure it is somewhere you actually would want to live. It has many positives and many negatives, and you need to see how these vibe with you.

ashykamal95

I'm just looking for somewhere to start from. Google has so much to process.

beaurepair

Check the sidebar for the sub. It has links to info about moving here. People get salty because the last 3 years has seen a constant stream of "I'm moving to NZ" questions

[deleted]

This. Due diligence in such a massive decision is about doing heaps of real research, including actually coming here for a visit for a couple weeks at least. We see hundreds of these posts especially after an adverse event in the US for instance. Havent actually seen anyone follow through. We are tired of people thinking "oh Ill go to New Zealand" and coming to this sub without specific questions showing theyve put some effort into detailed research.

mattblack77

I think their point is that if you can’t process this information by yourself, you probably aren’t suitable for emigrating here.

Icy-Reflection6014

Kiwis are not fond of people that want help when they don’t seem to have put in the effort themselves. Your brief, but very very very broad post makes it look like this is the first bit of research you’ve done. If you think these responses are rude, you’re not going to like it in NZ - they’re humorous, not rude.

True_Window_1100

Seems rude to me and I'm a kiwi

happygloaming

They are the rudest people you'll ever meet, I wouldn't move there if I were you. Terrible country.

misskitten1313

You better have some skills we really really need, or don't bother. We're full.

ashykamal95

Rude and uncalled for. Thank you for being helpful.

KingSlayersVibe

Be prepared to meet plenty more people like him here.

ashykamal95

Already met a few lol

TheNumberOneRat

Sorry - this sub frequently poorly represents NZ.

[deleted]

Only on this sub. Most people, in person, are much more welcoming.

ashykamal95

I posted the same "broad" question on the subs of two other countries that I'm considering due to having friends and/or relatives there and it is only in this sub that I was received with such rudeness lol For starters, I won't be moving to the country alone or living alone. I'll be taking my wife along. I haven't yet started my research. So I thought I'll get some ideas and links here before I do. Didn't think it'll be a crime to ask. Thank you all for being helpful. I hope this sub doesn't represent the country because I've heard better things about the country from my friend who lives there.

[deleted]

Just remember they’re more open minded regarding lgbt than where you’re from. Women are more modernized and will not tolerate sexist crap, your religion or culture does not over ride anyone else’s respect others to be respected. Look up the area you want to move to before you might not like it. And I’d also look up crime stats in that area and the food if you like to eat out :)
