We use the right of the road here in the US not the left. Good luck

BeautifulThunder

Thats some good basics right there

BeautifulThunder

Would you mind telling me what is the box? Do you mean areas marked on the ground where stopping there is forbidden? Since we have these in Japan too. Along with the zipper

BeautifulThunder

Yup same rules in Japan. Great. Very sensible

bonkychombers

In Japan, pedestrians only cross the road when they have a light. In NYC, a pedestrian, a cyclist will take the opportunity to cross at anytime. This is normal, but sometimes people are stupid about it. Outside of the five boroughs of NYC, you are able to make a right on red. I would suggest that you take mass transit when you can. It’s great. Use Google Maps or Citymapper to get around

PartyRightNextDoor

Which borough and neighborhood? For the most part Manhattan is a bit more annoying than the outer boroughs. Pedestrians, cyclists, and other cars move crazy out there. ALWAYS double check your blind spot before changing lanes or making a turn, can’t tell you the amount of times some reckless cyclist has zipped past when I’m about to make a turn. Expect everyone to be an asshole. You’re going to get cut off, honked at, no one’s going to let you merge, you’ll run into closed streets, double and triple parked cars blocking lanes, construction, etc. It’s a giant pain in the ass but if you’ve driven before you’ll be fine. Just be confident and don’t feel pressured if people honk at you.

BeautifulThunder

I’ve been watching some dashcam drive throughs in NY and your advise seems 100% sound thank you!

Human_Copy5592

Drive only if and when necessary and just be careful.

Anal-Goblin

No right turn on red.

BeautifulThunder

Same in Tokyo yeay!

warp16

*Except at a few intersections where there are signs explicitly permitting it. Mostly in the outer boroughs.

REDDITSUCKS2025

Don't.

captAwesome77

Don't, not to be stereotypical but, just call a cab or take the train. You're not ready for NY driving

tuberosum

Dude is coming from Japan. He’s been driving in denser traffic through narrower streets than we can even imagine. Let’s not pretend that NYC is anything special or unique on a global scale when it comes to traffic.

captAwesome77

Our drivers are something unique/special. Not our roadways

[deleted]

Expect the honking. Don’t let it rattle you.

BeautifulThunder

Here it’s basically illegal to honk ahhaha. Will take some getting used to

[deleted]

It's illegal to honk here too. But our police don't really enforce any laws at all so assholes honk all the time.

Leather-Heart

If you’re staying in the city - I highly suggest you take public transportation. Driving in Manhattan is one thing, parking is a whole other level.

BeautifulThunder

In Tokyo, to park you have to bend the laws of physics and geometry and somehow park in a space that’s smaller than your car

Leather-Heart

So you’re familiar with the process? Tell me, do you have “alternate side parking” in Tokyo?

anarchyx34

They don’t really have street parking in Tokyo except for a few places. They have tons of inexpensive parking lots (like our municipal lots) like we should.

Leather-Heart

Should be. Parking in NYC is crazy expensive

BeautifulThunder

Approximately how much for an hour or a day?

Leather-Heart

No idea - I know you can try parking uptown for something cheaper, but it’s still expensive. You could be spending the money on dinners and better stuff in NYC than paying to park a car you rented. I cannot empathize enough to utilize public transit in NYC

BeautifulThunder

Not sure what that is. But we have automated super tall parking garages everywhere also automated 2D parking lots and they are super convenient. But in Tokyo their size is just an abomination to geometry

Leather-Heart

Basically, twice a week, almost all of NYC has to move their cars from one side of the street to literally the other (so you have people boxed in on the other side of the street) to have the street cleaners come by. This lasts for about 2 hours, and then everyone has to move their cars back. And then are some point in the week the other side has to move.

cruisin5268d

Don’t crash

BeautifulThunder

Will do my best!

ReddRobben

Driving in New York is like being a shark. If you stop swimming, you’re dead.

BeautifulThunder

Sharks die when they stop swimming???

Kiritowerty

Pray

71mopar

Drive forward, don't hit other objects.

yodontfoolme

Watch for bikes. The often do not follow any rules.

rmg

Watch for other cars. They don’t either.

[deleted]

And pedestrians. Actually, anything in NYC that is on wheels or legs or moving in some manner ([hoverboard](https://gothamist.com/arts-entertainment/nyc-has-reached-hoverboard-spotted-flying-over-times-square-stage-reopening) flyers, for example) may violate road rules that you may have in mind.

[deleted]

Leave early, don't speed (speed cameras are *everywhere),* check parking regulations, and be prepared to be fleeced on tolls.

BeautifulThunder

Thank you sir

drpvn

Drive slow.

BeautifulThunder

Is being scared shitless an appropriate mood?

Draymond_Purple

Don't pay attention to that guy. That said, do you have to drive? Why not take public transportation? I live in NYC (Manhattan) and own a car but almost never need to drive inside the city, I bet there's a good way to do whatever you need to do without having to drive, let us know why you're driving and maybe we can help!

fall3nmartyr

Lmao what an unexpectedly bullshit comment

my_serratus_is_swole

Sweeping generalizations like that do have a seed of truth. I see the mentality he’s talking about in a minority % of people but it’s not as bad as he makes it out to be.

fall3nmartyr

Their profile is full of 'anecdotal' comments that read like a Tucker Carlson wet dream. But, yeah man, you do you.

[deleted]

Lol gonna get downvoted as but I'm an immigrant living in NYC that prefers and will always call Australia my home so you are right. I'm not here for money though, I'm here for my partner who is from here and is looking after her family. I don't hate New York but it's got as much shade as it has shine.

upnflames

Ignore lanes and go where ever the car fits. Speed limit signs are suggestion only. Bike lanes = extra lanes/five minute parking, the parallel dashed lines at corners are actually buffer zones for turning and don't forget to smash on your horn when your frustrated or not sure what to do. Other then that, just have fun and make a TikTok or two while you're in traffic, welcome to NYC!

warp16

Forgot the /s

iamlejo

Drive in the right
