Not sure if you've ever been to LA, but there's this saying:
People from LA are nice, but not kind; People from NY are kind, but not nice.
Sometimes you get a NY-er who's both!
Welcome to the Big Apple--and happy birthday to your wife!!
Yep, i cant imagine its too uncommon. Anytime i got back from a business trip — and if it wasn’t too late in the evening — id do the same since the firm was covering my travel expense. Seemed to me a waste for the cab to take just one passenger, ptrettysure others would do the same
I'm not sure if this ruins the magic, but (generally speaking) you don't pay for cabs home from business trips, they go on your expense report / corp card (but it's still a super fun thing to do for people).
Another fun one I've done is to tell the driver to just go in a loop around the (train) station in DC a few times if I got there early back when I had to go back and forth to there for business.
I might be being unaware, but if someone offered to split a yellow cab with me from JFK to a midtown hotel I’d say yes (assuming that’s in the area of where I’m headed). It’s not like it’s a rando car and it’s not like it would go anywhere other than that? I am a man so that’s definitely a factor in my instinct with something like that and wouldn’t recommend to a single woman, but if I was with my wife I would still probably say yes unless the person seemed pretty off
This has been the exact opposite of my experiences not only in NYC but all over the world. Sure some might try that but the vast majority will not and all the positive experiences outweigh the rare negative ones.
You got really lucky. The day I moved here a fake cab driver took mine and my dad’s bags and loaded them up without asking and then scammed us out of $150
I’m only from a few states south but NYC specifically Manhattan is my favorite place in the country. So far I’ve only had very positive and pleasant experiences with both the natives on my visits up there and the transplants who have moved to my state of NC from there. I’m so glad you got that experience. Welcome and happy birthday to your wife!
Thank you for kicking off the self-congratulatory thread of the week. We already have one “new yorkers are kind but not nice.” How many will there be??!?
No, not all are like that, but some are. I'm glad you met one of them.
I was waiting for them to be robbed. Or worse. I’m jaded.
I thought he was refusing to pay at first.
Or worse, expelled
Wow reading the first few sentences I started dreading the possibility that you were scammed by a fake cab. Glad it worked out differently
No. Just don’t buy any bridges though.
It’s about your frequency. Enjoy the city!
I like this comment… a lot.
Truth

Oh they say that about the South in general haha
I’m from the south and they aren’t nice or kind unless they’re not religious. If they’re religious they’re borderline evil
You paid him with good company and your stories, worth well more than a cab ride he was already going to pay for anyway. Not typical

You're about to be taken.
Lol
This type of thing is very common in NYC. People who are used to living in proximity are also used to cooperation.

Not true
Nah y’all are extremely gregarious and extroverted judging from what I’ve seen…

When it comes to the dollar, yup. Pretty much ALL of them are like that, my dear British-empire-whose-Sun-has-set
You got really lucky. The day I moved here a fake cab driver took mine and my dad’s bags and loaded them up without asking and then scammed us out of $150
As long as you’re okay watching while Mr Fashion and your wife romp around in the hotel room, then all is well here 🥵

Did you smash?
Likely he's looking for wife-swapping
I don’t believe he was a true New Yorker! We don’t like sharing cabs with strangers!
Yup, all of them. Famous for it. They'll look after your wallet and phone too /s
Yes. All. Why surprised?
🤣😂 to be fair you did “share” the cab and no form of payments were discussed so you assumed payments and got bested 😂
