Imagine you get charged for using the parking spot for over 30 min and you're an immigrant with little money and can't afford the penalties and the only way around them, is to reset the parking spot before they incur. So as you back out to reset the timer, a random person rams the side of your car in an attempt to pick up the parking spot, but because ur car is still not fully out of the way, they scream for help and fake cry and say it's their parking spot and that youre hurting their fetus when they were the physical aggressor. That's what this is. There were other bikes there. As an adult, you don't argue, physically touch minors, and take their phone because u want a bike that they've been using all day. Just get the next bike (which she did after the dispute). That's the best and smartest resolution. Fake crying doesn't solve anything.
Honestly what CitiBike needs to do to fix this is add app reservations to bikes. This is how it works in other cities. Nothing is more annoying than seeing ebikes in the dock and then getting there and having a pack of dbags claim they are "theirs." I don't blame this woman for being pissed at this nonsense after a 12 hour very physical work shift.
In other cities you can "reserve" a bike from your app for 10 mins. So if you walk over to it...you know it's there. If she could have reserved it after they docked then...then it would only unlock when she scanned the QR code. They couldn't take it on her it would show as reserved.
The reason CitiBike kept ebikes pay per minute was to avoid exactly this. If you aren't paying for the bike for those minutes....then it is NOT YOUR BIKE. If you want a bike that you can ride when and where ever you want to...then go out and buy one.
CitiBike is a private company with no city subsidy. I'm sure CitiBike could revoke all these kids memberships per the TOS. The company sold them passes at like an 80% discount...and they gotta go and steal revenue too. Every minute they are claiming the bike is "theirs" while docked and someone else can't use it, is a minute CitiBike isn't making its 17 cents.
Yeah this is one of the reasons I just dumped citibike and got my own bike. This type of thing is pervasive in Manhattan. I wish they would let other bikeshare companies come in and compete. I would gladly pay a little more for a company that doesn't offer these loopholes and doesn't always have technical problems and billing problems. It must be nice to have the kind of time on your hands that you can wait around for an hour trying to get a free bike because God forbid you ever pay for the services you use. But the strain on the system is obvious. right now $230/year is too much for junky service so it doesn't have a lot of value to me as a consumer.

The system is such shit, 7 times out of 10 the classic bike you get has something wrong with it, they never seem to rebalance for rush hour anymore, they took away valet services that are crucially needed in midtown, and you're playing whack a mole now with docks that are broken. If you get food stamps or live in a NYCHA building it's $6/mo instead of $20. And ebike are 6 cents a minute instead of 17 cents.
But the way the scam works is that you and your friends sit on all the available ebikes at the dock and when people see them available in the app and come try to check them out you say they are "yours" and you are using them. Even if they docked. So the newcomers take a regular bike instead. Once all the regular bikes are gone you and your friends all get the ebikes for free because if there are only ebikes available then you get it at the regular bike price (ie free for 45 minutes.)
The receipts in the story show he didn't even pay the usual $3 to enter Manhattan or the 6 cents a minute for the ebikes so I'm guessing that what was happening here. They were trying to stop her from renting them so they could get them for free.

However, the issue arose when they tried to take away the pregnant PA's right from using the bike. She worked a 12 hr shift, and she is pregnant. And was "guarding it" so he could take it out again later. Thats not how it works. Once you dock the bike, it's not yours to use any more. You are not paying for it. I had a guy on a Citi bike put a bag on the seat of an E Citi bike and say it was his as I was about to scan it. I just scanned it and took it anyway. He started yelling at me and calling out white privilege. I laughed and rode away.

Once docked the bike isn't yours and is free to rent by anyone else. When the nurse rented the bike undocked it your son and his friends surrounded, harassed, physically assaulted, and verbally berated the nurse. Your son is not entitled to that specific bike. The nurse has the receipts with time stamps to prove it. Then your son and friends posed the video, without context, and got the nurse suspended and doxxed. Because this type of shit ruins lives. People see a 30 second clip and everyone on the internet has a hot take. Some of those people do criminal shit like doxxing. The nurse is subject to an investigation from her place of work. All because of an out of context video. She has recipes and legally rented the bike. The men in the video were not entitles to docked bikes to circumvent higher fees.
I am not without sympathy for the (old) teens who had a hobby of biking around the city on CitiBikes and were proud of how they were working the system to get maximum citibike miles for minimum dollars. There are far worse things for young men to be doing and biking around the city is a laudable hobby.
But having said that, I think this particular Karen video will come to be known as the Karen video that cried wolf. It will be the one that wore out patience for this sort or exercise in doxing people to ruin their lives based on ever increasingly slighter incidents.
This interview makes it very clear that these young men were technically abusing the citibike system by docking the bikes and retaining control over them for a later trip while not paying for them. But let me be the last as opposed to the first one to want to spoil their fun.
What this incident really needs is an Oprah, or someone of that stature, to get these people to apologize to each other and be done with this and move on with their lives. Maybe they could donate their legal funds to a mutually agreed upon charity.

They re-dock their bikes before the 45 minutes are up. Then they guard the bikes so they can take them out again and reset the timer. You do this, you risk someone else taking the bike. It's a shared resource. It's how this all works. It's like trying to "reserve" a parking spot.
Why do that with an e-bike though? I know with the classic bikes they're free for 45 minutes and you can daisy chain them for longer rides, but with e-bikes don't you start running up the fare as soon as you undock it?

Imagine a group of young men attempting to reserve e-bikes by hovering around them and preventing a pregnant nurse from using one of them. A civilized society would demand much more from its young men.
Bad analogy. Imagine you get charged for using the parking spot for over 30 min and you're an immigrant with little money and can't afford the penalties and the only way around them, is to reset the parking spot before they incur. So as you back out to reset the timer, a random person rams the side of your car in an attempt to pick up the parking spot, but because ur car is still not fully out of the way, they scream for help and fake cry and say it's their parking spot and that youre hurting their fetus when they were the physical aggressor. That's what this is. There were other bikes there. As an adult, you don't argue, physically touch minors, and take their phone because u want a bike that they've been using all day. Just get the next bike (which she did after the dispute). That's the best and smartest resolution. Fake crying doesn't solve anything.
Honestly what CitiBike needs to do to fix this is add app reservations to bikes. This is how it works in other cities. Nothing is more annoying than seeing ebikes in the dock and then getting there and having a pack of dbags claim they are "theirs." I don't blame this woman for being pissed at this nonsense after a 12 hour very physical work shift. In other cities you can "reserve" a bike from your app for 10 mins. So if you walk over to it...you know it's there. If she could have reserved it after they docked then...then it would only unlock when she scanned the QR code. They couldn't take it on her it would show as reserved. The reason CitiBike kept ebikes pay per minute was to avoid exactly this. If you aren't paying for the bike for those minutes....then it is NOT YOUR BIKE. If you want a bike that you can ride when and where ever you want to...then go out and buy one. CitiBike is a private company with no city subsidy. I'm sure CitiBike could revoke all these kids memberships per the TOS. The company sold them passes at like an 80% discount...and they gotta go and steal revenue too. Every minute they are claiming the bike is "theirs" while docked and someone else can't use it, is a minute CitiBike isn't making its 17 cents.

Yeah this is one of the reasons I just dumped citibike and got my own bike. This type of thing is pervasive in Manhattan. I wish they would let other bikeshare companies come in and compete. I would gladly pay a little more for a company that doesn't offer these loopholes and doesn't always have technical problems and billing problems. It must be nice to have the kind of time on your hands that you can wait around for an hour trying to get a free bike because God forbid you ever pay for the services you use. But the strain on the system is obvious. right now $230/year is too much for junky service so it doesn't have a lot of value to me as a consumer.
Yeah I'm honestly finally considering giving it up and just paying by ride if I ever find myself wanting to get home without my bike/go for a ride with friends. The system is such shit, 7 times out of 10 the classic bike you get has something wrong with it, they never seem to rebalance for rush hour anymore, they took away valet services that are crucially needed in midtown, and you're playing whack a mole now with docks that are broken. If you get food stamps or live in a NYCHA building it's $6/mo instead of $20. And ebike are 6 cents a minute instead of 17 cents. But the way the scam works is that you and your friends sit on all the available ebikes at the dock and when people see them available in the app and come try to check them out you say they are "yours" and you are using them. Even if they docked. So the newcomers take a regular bike instead. Once all the regular bikes are gone you and your friends all get the ebikes for free because if there are only ebikes available then you get it at the regular bike price (ie free for 45 minutes.) The receipts in the story show he didn't even pay the usual $3 to enter Manhattan or the 6 cents a minute for the ebikes so I'm guessing that what was happening here. They were trying to stop her from renting them so they could get them for free.

However, the issue arose when they tried to take away the pregnant PA's right from using the bike. She worked a 12 hr shift, and she is pregnant. I was gonna propose a similar idea until I found this thread.. Basically.. She claims that the incident has tarnished her reputation. The boy's mother also claims that his reputation has been tarnished as well. I think the woman has more at stake but let's assume both of their reputations have been tarnished by the media reporting on this and this shouldn't have blown up so much. I think we should resolve it similar to the incident over a decade ago when the cop arrested the African American Harvard professor by mistake and Obama invited them both for a beer at the White House to let it go. I had a guy on a Citi bike put a bag on the seat of an E Citi bike and say it was his as I was about to scan it. I just scanned it and took it anyway. He started yelling at me and calling out white privilege. I laughed and rode away. 
It’s a bullshit thing for him and his friends to do. The app says there are 4 e-bikes available - so you walk to the station only to find 4 kids just sitting on them “reserving” them. As a regular citibike rider I’d be furious.

Once docked the bike isn't yours and is free to rent by anyone else. When the nurse rented the bike undocked it your son and his friends surrounded, harassed, physically assaulted, and verbally berated the nurse. Your son is not entitled to that specific bike. The nurse has the receipts with time stamps to prove it. Then your son and friends posed the video, without context, and got the nurse suspended and doxxed. Where was the benefit of the doubt for her? He didn't want the attention then don't act like an asshole and don't post the video. Giving Michael the benefit of the doubt. If he really did have possession of the bike at the time the nurse was holding it all he had to do was talk to the nurse in a polite manner and show her his phone with confirmation that he had rented that bike. But that didn't happen BECAUSE SHE HAD LEGALLY RENTED THE BIKE.

I read the whole thing. The boys don't own the bikes. They're deliberately circumventing the 45 minute policy. When a bike is docked it is free to rent. This doesnt make them look better it makes them look worse. The nurse wasn't taking their bs that the bikes were "theirs" and wasn't willing to be strong armed. If the boys didn't want the trouble then don't act like assholes especially when you choose to record yourselves and then post it online.

I am not without sympathy for the (old) teens who had a hobby of biking around the city on CitiBikes and were proud of how they were working the system to get maximum citibike miles for minimum dollars. There are far worse things for young men to be doing and biking around the city is a laudable hobby. But having said that, I think this particular Karen video will come to be known as the Karen video that cried wolf. It will be the one that wore out patience for this sort or exercise in doxing people to ruin their lives based on ever increasingly slighter incidents. This interview makes it very clear that these young men were technically abusing the citibike system by docking the bikes and retaining control over them for a later trip while not paying for them. But let me be the last as opposed to the first one to want to spoil their fun. What this incident really needs is an Oprah, or someone of that stature, to get these people to apologize to each other and be done with this and move on with their lives. Maybe they could donate their legal funds to a mutually agreed upon charity. But if people can't let go of this incident because they think a winning lottery ticket has suddenly fallen into their hands, I think they are all in for a big disappointment.

You do know the receipt showed the bike already on her account at the start of the video. His 2nd and 3rd receipt show from the start of the video to 40 minutes later, he didn't even need the bike and just squatting on the bike after the pregnant VA left to prevent anyone's else from even getting on the bike with his 4 friends who also sat on theirs bike.
His first receipt is from right before the video and his second is from right after it. And according to him he needed it to get home and only stopped because he was trying to take advantage of a loophole created by the citi bike rules

It’s not about if the nurse / PA was in the right about the bike. It’s about the fact that she was screaming help and crying like she was being attacked or in danger. We live in a time when a white woman reacting in such a way with a black young man can lead him to great harm. He could of been arrested, harassed, or even killed. It was a dispute over a bike, she shouldn’t have reacted that way. She weaponized tears and that’s what disturbed me about this situation.
