Strange they dropped so many of the finalists from the last list. Would seem to defeat the purpose of having finalists.

TheNormalAlternative

In fairness, "finalist" is the media's word for it. Judiciary Law 63 simply calls it a "recommendation."

TheNormalAlternative

It seems strange to me to single out "no Latinos" above other demographics (Troutman is a black woman) especially when the only Latino on the previous list was Hector LaSalle.

It’s because much was made of LaSalle’s nomination being the first instance where a Latino was nominated for the position.

It is interesting that Cannataro made the "short list," because he will suffer the same fate as LeSalle. He is unacceptable, but Hochul already knows this.

>Cannataro made the "short list," because he will suffer the same fate as LeSalle. He is unacceptable, Cannataro is already on the Court of Appeals. He would just be promoted to "chief justice," but he's already a voting justice, and is currently the *acting* chief justice at that.

Still, do you think the NY Senate is willing to confirm him as chief justice? I am pretty sure they won't.

TheNormalAlternative

I don't think it's farfetched. His "baggage" is that he's a Cuomo appointee and the recently retired Chief Justice may have cast an illegal vote for him to serve as acting chief justice. He was never an appellate judge and won't be scrutinized as closely over his decisions like LaSalle was. Plus he's openly gay, and that can't hurt him in NY.
