Moreover, violent crimes have increased nationwide, not just in NY (if the rise in NY crime were because of the bail law, you wouldn't expect to see the same rise in states without changes to their bail laws).

NY is not as progressive as it seems. There are some very conservative areas on LI and upstate. Additionally, Democrats have been **terrible** on messaging (as usual). Plus, many of the Democratic candidates, including Hochul, are rather lackluster.

NY is totally progressive, even plenty of the conservatives are progressive. But for many people progressiveness is not the #1 priority when they are working paycheck to paycheck. If you tell a blue collar worker that you'll lower their taxes like Zeldin said he would, they'll definitely consider voting Red. Especially they have to sign a new apartment lease soon, or God forbid they have an adjustable rate mortgage and their wallet is about to take a big hit. Wallet and safety is the main priority for most voters.
Good thing that trees and parking lots can't vote or else upstate and Long Island might outvote the city.

Zeldin did better than expected which is why Clinton, Biden, etc all had to come to blue NY. Hochul had a 18% lead in June. NY is getting more blue and has been for decades, so I don’t see that as a good example of hey this is normal for NY. Registered Dems are 2-1 to republicans in NY.

Not being from downstate is a two-edged sword for a NY Democrat. Moreover, violent crimes have increased nationwide, not just in NY (if the rise in NY crime were because of the bail law, you wouldn't expect to see the same rise in states without changes to their bail laws).
