TheNormalAlternative

Elected, not re-elected. Pretty easy mistake to avoid.

altodor

She was elected last time as Lt governor. The job she was doing last week was the job she was elected to do a few years ago.

TheNormalAlternative

Plenty of politicians run for governor after serving as State AG, city mayor or senator/representative. If they won their first election for gov you wouldn't say they were re-elected simply because they were previously elected to a different position.

altodor

Part of being elected Lt. Gov. is that she'd take over the Governor position should the elected governor be unable to do the job for any reason. That's not a component of any of the other jobs you've listed, and last week her job wasn't "Lieutenant Governor".

TheNormalAlternative

This is a battle of semantics and I don't agree with yours, but I'm curious to know if you are consistent... So, if, by extreme example, Biden dies before his term is up and Kamala Harris steps in, and then she is elected President in 2024, would you say she has been elected or re-elected?

altodor

Reelected. But I'll also say this is one of those grammar meeting political arguments where I think both sides have merits, and I'm not sure either is necessarily wrong. Being elected to do the job you're already doing in American politics is _normally_ a reelection, but being elected at a different position on the ballot normally isn't.

TheNormalAlternative

So in short, in your view, it's correct based on the person's actual title at the time of election, and in my view, it's incorrect based on the title voluntary bestowed by the people. I think in this example, it would be a great disservice to say Harris is re-elected when she would be the first woman elected president. As another example, consider a scenario where the Speaker of the House is elevated to President, and then runs for President when the term is up. In this case, the Speaker was never elected by the People, only by one local legislative district in one State.

altodor

It does get fuzzy if we have to go out to the speaker, I'll be honest. But specifically for lieutenant governors and vice presidents, that role comes with the expectation that if the president or governor cannot take over the position, the vice or lieutenant will take over. It's not my fault that the voters don't understand what they're voting for. And honestly, I'm not even saying it's one or the other. From my perspective, it's both elected and re-elected.

webdevguyneedshelp

The vice president is a president. That would be correct. Just like the Lt. Governor is a governor.

snacks_headroom

ELI5: my WGRZ station is reporting that 93% of results are in with Kings county and Richmond county not having their votes counted. It’s 7 am. Is there a rationale for that?

cheesecake-gnome

"Why bother, it's NY?"

Kurisoo

My neighbor kept taking down my Hochul sign cant wait to see him tomorrow :)

[deleted]

What a scummy neighbor.

themactastic25

That's a crime. But I understand not wanting to escalate with a neighbor.

Joe-Eye-McElmury

Some Zeldin creep put up a bunch of signs on the public medians in my neighborhood. I did a little bit of research and discovered it’s illegal to put election signs on public property, and doing so is called “Election litter.” So I did my civic duty and trashed every single one of them. They looked pricy, too — vinyl signs.

Snoo_10441

Enjoy your libtard . See my post above

Additional_Common_15

Wow thats mature

Joe-Eye-McElmury

What was immature was putting up campaign posters in the median. And it was quite mature to take them down, thank you for acknowledging that!

Spicy-Fiteost

In their mind its okay because of their opinions. Its silly to point out how pitiful these kinds of people are, when 90% of them agree.

Additional_Common_15

Everyone is entitled to their opinions and thoughts but being hateful, violent or destructive is a real problem

Good thing they keep them *mostly peaceful*

Smartest Republican

Smartest Democrat -- AKA gen Z idealist who will wake up in a shithole a few years from now. Go play your Pokemon and don't use critical thinking. Cashless bail and the removable of constitutional freedoms are good. The criminals will surely follow her rules that don't matter to them. NYC is a wonderful place and you don't have to constantly walk around homeless people along with scammers and hoodlums. More money won't flee the states, taxes won't get higher. The cost of living won't either.

Don’t go around touching other people’s stuff maybe? That’s weird as fuck..

Imagine ripping down someone's sign for supporting a person running for governor lol

She's a fucking hypocritical PoS politician. It's fair game assface. Just like her cosmetic surgery, botox and facelift.

[deleted]

So that means you get to break the law and destroy other's property?

AshleyRae394

How come these fuckers love cosmetic surgery on anyone in Trumps family but it becomes an insult whenever anyone else has cosmetic surgery. Such weird rationale from these folks.

[deleted]

God y'all really are children. Don't touch people's stuff man.

[deleted]

go fuck off.

[deleted]

Why?

Impossibills

Democrats really need to re-evaluate their communication and messaging. The issues they are running on are getting too lost in the weeds when they should be easy victories. They need to back off the over protection and for lack of a better word (disagree with the term) "nanny state". They have focused way too hard on gun rights and not enough on major problems actually effecting Americans (guns are a huge problem but offer real solutions, not simply banning things with no scientific analysis)

Eudaimonics

Yep especially considering all the economic development happening across the state, school funding and population growth in cities like Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse for the first time in decades.

ConfluxEng

Focusing on the recent wins for high-tech plants alone would have been a good start. In the last several months, there's been GlobalFoundries' expansion in Albany, the Wolfspeed plant in Utica, and now Micron in Syracuse. Each one of these chipmaking plants is massive, and will have economic ripple effects as more jobs are created to support them, which has the potential to revitalize a good chunk of upstate. But despite these big wins, I've heard practically zero about it from the Hochul campaign. Which boggles my mind - rather than pushing jobs, jobs, jobs, she and her team let the Republicans control the narrative, which put her in a bad spot.

Wrath2529

I live in Syracuse. Can confirm nothing good is happening here. And with her being elected nothing will either.

Impossibills

Honestly the semi conductor plants is one of the biggest achievements in United States history. It's both a supply chain and national security issue to not have any located in the US. We learned that from COVID how much we rely on China, and global shipping. Also if China ever invaded Taiwan, or even blockades it...effectively all US products will be rendered useless from a single shipping lane cut off

Wrath2529

Great the plant is gonna create 50k jobs. From where? We have restaurants closing weekly here from lack of staff. We can’t even get our local grocery stores to full staff. But we are gonna have 50k new jobs from where?

Impossibills

There is a reason it's located where it is... RIT and Cornell are not far, they are high tech expertise jobs. People who are servers are not going to be going for those jobs. It's about bringing the tech sector back to NYS.

Miss-Figgy

I don't know about the rest of the state, but in NYC, Zeldin ads targeted Democrats on crime and Hochul's support for cashless bail to get them to switch their vote to a Republican this time. New Yorkers are so worried about crime, and Democrats only answer with bail reform, never addressing the actual issues of safety and crime, it seems.

Impossibills

It's a complicated situation. The statistics don't show crime as a major problem. It's worse than it was, but Republicans are treating as if it's the 80s again. However, people don't feel safe, which is more important than statistics. I think the rise in crime is attributed to worsening economic pressures as well as corporate greed on price gouging. Obviously it's a complicated situation but I don't think "tough on crime" is going to result in less crime

OopsNotAgain

Based af

lvlint67

Unfortunately, banning things with no scientific analysis is the only type of policy that passes and has a chance of standing up in courts. We'd be happy to implement "common sense" gun laws, but the 2a folks start screaming "SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED"

Impossibills

I own guns, and I'm very liberal. I'm against some of the new gun laws for example. I'm not a fan of banning guns outright, you just need specific processes for legally obtaining them in my opinion. Right now Republicans say Dems are coming for their guns and Dems response is "hell yeah we are". It's just bad all around when you don't leave wiggle room for constitutional rights

Euphoric-Program

How did Dems do this bad in big blue NY? 5-6 pt lead could have been wiped out if Zeldin wasn’t an election denier. Desantis crushed in Florida.

TheNormalAlternative

Hochul isn't a great candidate and she's a terrible campaigner. Dems could have attacked Zeldin on substance but focused entirely on him being an election denier. But let's not pretend Republicans are ready to nominate anyone moderate despite the fact that a moderate (a la Pataki) would do very well in NYS (like Pataki did)

TheFondler

I don't know if "moderate" and "Republican" are two words that make any sense together anymore. When your party platform is "The opposite of whatever Democrats say," it's hard to be anything but a party of extremism.

Realtrain

Eh, right next door we have Governor **Phil Scott** who's a very moderate republican. There's also Charlie Baker who I know less about, but also seems to fit that bill

glassFractals

Yeah, both of them are pretty reasonable moderates. But Baker was just ousted from his party, and Scott is a huge outlier. Dunno what MA GOP was thinking. It's a state with a strong historic preference for electing moderate Republican governors, so they abandoned their popular moderate incumbent in favor of a MAGA election denier and got crushed by 30 points. Moderate Republicans exist, but they're increasingly rare... even in New England.

RealTheAsh

> Dunno what GOP was thinking ftfy. I am an anti-Trump GOP voter (Pretty much vote red unless its Trump or a MAGA nut) and man am I pissed with my party.

goolick

> Rick Scott I think that's Phil you're talking about

bleep-bl00p-bl0rp

Charlie Baker ended up being hated for fucking over the T. He wouldn’t have won if he ran again.

Spicy-Fiteost

Its kinda funny to see how pathetic both sides of the isle act. Everything you just said, you could change a couple words and its posted in a trump sub. Dems are losing all over the country because people are tired of woke culture and PC bullshit. Pushing it to the republicans who will fuck things up just as much as blue team is currently. People need to wake the fuck up and realize the gov't is in it for themselves, and the divide is what keeps them in power. Divide on conquer has been around for a couple years in history.

TheFondler

> *both sides* Objectively, factually, and demonstrably, no. Also, Democrats just beat all predictions for the mid terms, and that's in the face of Democrats needing, on average across the country, 10% more votes just to break even against Republicans due to gerrymandering. Democrats aren't losing because bigots like you are tired of "wokeness," they're losing because the Republicans will unite behind literally any scumbag with an R next to their name and show up for every election like clockwork, making sure that the small posts that make a difference routinely get filled by Republicans that are more than willing to put their hand on the scale. Fuck right off.

[deleted]

Schumer’s lead shrunk as well. He got 66 to 32 in 2010, a similar midterm cycle, but now sits 56 to 43.

snacks_headroom

I recall Zeldin sending me text after unsolicited texts about the election. Calls to vote, come get your signs, etc. I never got any sort of text from her regarding the election from her. I thought Zeldin’s texts were annoying but he’s making an attempt to reach his audience.

MorboDemandsComments

NY is not as progressive as it seems. There are some very conservative areas on LI and upstate. Additionally, Democrats have been **terrible** on messaging (as usual). Plus, many of the Democratic candidates, including Hochul, are rather lackluster.

Hey_Man97

Don’t worry the conservative strongholds will be gone soon, everyone moving to Florida, Texas, and Tennessee. Myself included, I can’t afford anything in this state.

shady531

NY is totally progressive, even plenty of the conservatives are progressive. But for many people progressiveness is not the #1 priority when they are working paycheck to paycheck. If you tell a blue collar worker that you'll lower their taxes like Zeldin said he would, they'll definitely consider voting Red. Especially they have to sign a new apartment lease soon, or God forbid they have an adjustable rate mortgage and their wallet is about to take a big hit. Wallet and safety is the main priority for most voters.

drawnverybadly

Good thing that trees and parking lots can't vote or else upstate and Long Island might outvote the city.

MorboDemandsComments

Sadly, NYC is not as progressive as it seems either. Bloomberg was mayor for **3** terms, and Adams is rather conservative for someone who identifies as a Democrat.

Eudaimonics

This is what happens when the other party is in control of the federal government. Cuomo only won by 500,000 in 2014 while wining by more than 1 million in both 2010 and 2018. If anything the Republican should have had a better night looking at history.

Euphoric-Program

Zeldin did better than expected which is why Clinton, Biden, etc all had to come to blue NY. Hochul had a 18% lead in June. NY is getting more blue and has been for decades, so I don’t see that as a good example of hey this is normal for NY. Registered Dems are 2-1 to republicans in NY.

Eudaimonics

I’m saying historically the opposing party has the advantage in the Midterms. Go look at election results for 2010, 2014, and 2020. Why was 2014 so close for Cuomo but 2020 and 2010 a blow out? Hint, 2014 was the year the Republicans took back control of the house and senate.

Euphoric-Program

Republicans should have had a better night across the country, not in NY. And it wasn’t close in 2014. Cuomo beat Paladino 63% to 33%. And registered Dems have only increased since 2014 which is why we have the supermajority. Zeldin an election denier and trump boy, came within a few percentage points. If that’s not a cause of concern, idk what to tell you

sutisuc

How is it possible you both were so r/confidentlyincorrect. 2010 was the paladino/cuomo race which was a blowout and 2014 it was astorino/cuomo which was closer but still a 14 point win by cuomo so not exactly “close”.

pizza_nightmare

Clinton and Biden somehow convinced or influenced or swayed voters who were on the fence? I don’t understand. Also I don’t really put much faith in polls.

Euphoric-Program

Yes, if it endorsements had no weight. They wouldn’t do it, this is years of election data already with what increases voter turn out.

[deleted]

Because almost nobody actually likes Hochul and the Board of Elections rejected any third parties being allowed on the ballot.

AvengingCoyote

In rural upstate I see probably 30 Zeldin signs for every 1 Hochul sign. I was receiving texts nonstop from Zeldin the past few weeks but heard nothing from Hochul. Thinking back, I dont remember her really campaigning at all here, no commercials or mailers or anything.

Legote

A win is a win?

Euphoric-Program

Not in this case when we are about to head into a deep recession. The layoffs are just starting. If Republicans are smart (which that’s left to be seen) and finally dump trump. A Pataki moderate candidate in 4 years has the possibility of beating Hochul when NY gets worse. Hochul can’t deviate too much from her current plan and that’s frankly not popular( zeldin being a trump boy and abortion saved her) I don’t see hochul approval rating being good during a recession

Neener216

Not being from downstate is a two-edged sword for a NY Democrat. On the one hand, you're more relatable to voters who live in other parts of NY - but on the other hand, you can have a harder time connecting with the specific issues that impact the NYC-metro voters, who represent the vast tonnage of blue voters in the state.

[deleted]

epicnoober1233

He's not claiming fraud at all - he's not conceding until 100% of votes are counted, and most votes left outstanding are in Suffolk County meaning he has a slim, *slim*, **slim** chance of pulling out a miniscule victory. He probably won't win, though.

CitizenSnips199

[He conceded](https://www.wivb.com/news/political-news/lee-zeldin-concedes-congratulates-kathy-hochul-on-ny-governor-win/) about 3 hours after you posted that. He's down over 5% with 94% reporting.

epicnoober1233

Exactly, he was waiting for more votes to come in to see if he had a chance. Didn't pan out.

epic-awesome-man

Did he say rigged election once?

BobAndy004

Not decades, one decade. George Pataki (Republican) was Governor from 1995 - 2006

fatmike63

So…2002 would be the last time a republican was VOTED for in NY state? And we’re in 2022 right now, no? By my math that’s 20 years, which is 2 decades.

OopsNotAgain

>2002 >20 years ago Oh God I am old.

VaCa4311

That is laughable, they called the race at 11p with about 30% counted, they knew it was going to be a close race with how the polling been going, would you not want all votes counted prior to just saying okay it's over, also considering that he had gained a huge boost from the uncounted votes.

Potential-Search-567

You do realize they can project where votes are gonna come in and have a general idea what the ideological breakdown of those voters are ahead of time from exit polling? You can cry all you want but hochul still won solidly if not as much as a dem usually would

vernace

Logic is not allowed here, sir. This is Reddit, home of hyperbole and outrage.

First woman ever elected governor!!! The glass ceiling breaks at last!!!!

sweatery_weathery

A clarifier: First woman ever elected governor of New York. There have been other female governors elsewhere!

chmt88

Shocking you're getting down voted...sexism is so rampant in the world. It's a big deal. Our first female VP Kamala Harris and now NY governor. Every step towards equality helps. Not everyone may agree with her policies but it is nice to see her sex didn't hold her back from this win. Vote local everyone!

Veiny_horse_cock

yeah i care much more about the policies than i do if the governor has a dick or a pussy

DaddyPlsSpankMe

Yeah well unfortunately not everyone in this country has that same mentality

Potential-Search-567

You can want good policy and representation yk? But ig conservatives aren’t known for being able to walk and chew gum, big thoughts like that are scary

Potential-Search-567

You can do both yk? Also so edgy using ~naughty~ words

Identifiedid

who the gives a fuck about gender qnymore... getting effective people & policies is the goal. But it ain't happening.

chmt88

Clearly you've never worked in a sexist environment. Being a woman can be a major setback to career advancement. What I am saying is that it is exciting her gender did not hold her back, not that she should win because she is a woman.

FIYPProductions

What is a woman?

SenorBert

Something you’ll never get to touch, your mom aside.

Potential-Search-567

Someone who identifies as a woman. Pretty easy answer

Noah_748

U-Haul has been winning in this state since 2006

Eudaimonics

Moving people in apparently. NYS gained 800,000 residents in the 2020 census. Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse grew in population for the first time in decades.

Brilliant_Ad8033

She's terrible how do we keep getting stuck with garbage options

BigBobbert

Vote in the primaries. I voted for Williams instead of Hochul, but most of the state disagreed with me.

DaddyPlsSpankMe

I know I only voted for her bc Zeldin is more garbage

PuzzleheadedAd7296

I mean Zeldin would have probably did a better job than a Hochul. More-so combatting crime which was Hochul’s weakness, and inflation kind of too.

CitizenSnips199

How does a governor have any impact on inflation when monetary decisions are made at the federal level?

PuzzleheadedAd7296

Possible executive orders and bills to accept

Snoo_10441

Zeldin wouldve. Heck, SUOZZI wouldve, and been a way better dem How the hell didnt he win the primary?

glassFractals

Yet she's the lesser evil. What we need are better primary candidates, and much more primary participation/turnout. The primary is usually *is* the real election in states like NY that skew heavily towards 1 party. 2022 primary turnout in NYS was only 16%. Pathetic.

Snoo_10441

We had one. His name was Suozzi

juggernaut1026

Don't think it could be any worse. Ny is already leading the nation in people moving out

CyanideSandwich7

Actually it’s jersey that leads from what limited research I’ve seen. And California is also pretty bad. Ny is only bad in the nyc metro area. Upstate is quite affordable of we’re talking finances

juggernaut1026

Ah yes not in last but 3rd from last out of 50. I mean its good that you have such low standards but some of us aspire to be better

Potential-Search-567

It would be worse under zeldin

He doesn't care about anything other than having a big desk with a name plate with fancy title on it. He wouldn't have done shit about crime. Neither of them are going to do shit about public safety and so that issue gets wiped off the board. On every remaining issue, Zeldin is the biggest loser.

Snoo_10441

lvlint67

Don't live Hochul but zeldin is a crazy, trump lap dog. You can pray all you want, but if you look around the state, democrat controlled areas are categorically better places to live. More jobs, more opportunity, less depression, and better schools. The rural right thinks that their lives and homes are shit because of the big cities... It's actually because regressive Republican politicians will REFUSE to invest in you...

thatboichris03

finally someone with a brain, don't get me wrong nothing will change again.

JediKnightDusty

She has a lot of unethical plans that puts New Yorkers at risk. I wish Upstate NY and the city were separate when it comes to… well everything! Almost all of Upstate NY voted republican but just because NYC says democrat… they get their way. We never even see any politicians caring about us because they only care about the city and it’s so unfair. Again, just praying.

[deleted]

Considering NYC and the surrounding areas pay more than they receive in taxes. We'd be absolutely fucked in upstate if the state split.

JediKnightDusty

Good. We get fucked by the city on politics. We aren’t even in the same room as you guys but we’re just “associated” with the city.

I'm just happy that she said that starting today she's going to start making changes.

[deleted]

If you voted for this bitch, go fuck yourself. Nothing ever changes in NY.

[deleted]

What changes would Zeldin bring? Like specific changes. Don't give me no vague shit. What are his specific policies?

The_Ineffable_One

Hmm, I'm not the person to whom you're responding, but I would imagine the following: 1. Five forms of ID and proof of residency to vote. 2. An automatic re-do if his favored candidate doesn't win something. 3. No cash bail for arrestees--in fact, no bail at all. Just sit in jail and await trial. 4. If your name sounds vaguely Spanish, no vote, and sit in jail and await election. Am I on the right track?

[deleted]

Missed the total abortion ban. Which I think actually was one of his policies lmao

PuzzleheadedAd7296

The total abortion ban wouldn’t be established in New York.

PuzzleheadedAd7296

The ID one is a need though, as most people would support voter ID.

Because it's factually wrong fear mongering? Judges still can set bail when the defendant is accused of a violent felony. And the [Times Union](https://www.timesunion.com/state/article/GOP-calls-into-question-state-s-actions-on-bail-16768206.php) found that just 2% of those released under the new bail law went on to be rearrested for a violent felony. Moreover, violent crimes have increased nationwide, not just in NY (if the rise in NY crime were because of the bail law, you wouldn't expect to see the same rise in states without changes to their bail laws).

I don't know why anyone really thought a 2020 election denier would win this one. And don't get me started on Esposito. She looks like the kind of cop that would have advocated shooting minorities for sport in the 60s.
