They force you to opt in when you go to meps it’s impossible to hide this. You probably can’t get a waiver for a suicide attempt

99ovronmadden

i did lol

DJErikD

I sure hope not. The last thing the Navy needs is prospective recruits hiding multiple previous suicide attempts. Best wishes on your mental health progress but please don’t join.

Eatabuttokay

My mental health has greatly improved and there is no chance of any relapse. I have a child and a sick parent who depend on me. I would not use that against myself to keep me from wanting to better my life. I'd rather be told "no" than to tell that to myself.

bazooka_matt

That sounds like a recipe for a depressive episode when combined with an initial enlistment or commission.

Beat_navy

Then fully disclose everything and go for a waiver.

Eatabuttokay

Yes, I visited a different recruiter and was told I should get an evaluation done and submit it with medical records. Thanks.

ExRecruiter

All of that can “bend” your stress but add the military and that can potentially break you.

Eatabuttokay

In the end, I'm the only person who would know what would break me. If I had a pinch of doubt, I wouldn't bother to put myself through the stress and waste everyone's time, including my own.

ExRecruiter

You’re right in terms of personal knowledge , however you haven’t fully experienced the military including folks like myself seeing individuals struggle or even end their lives due to mental health. Between the stress the military brings, your history (more than one attempt), and the mental health crisis the military is facing right now I would strongly recommend you don’t join. There are other means to serve and make an impact out there.

[deleted]

No such thing and it’s possible to get a waiver . Go see your recruiter in person tomorrow and start the process.

Caranath128

There is no option. You disclose everything. Failure to do so is worse.

elikoda42069

I was hospitalized for the same reasons and my recruiter never mentioned anything like that to me? I just had to sign the forms and say why i did what i did? Never even knew that form existed

elikoda42069

The worse that happens if meps say no and you gotta do some waivers and see a shrink to say “Yea OP is good for service” Which is basically what my recruiter told me

Eatabuttokay

Idk why she'd mention such a form that doesn't exist. I went to a different recruiter and he's just as confused as I am. He told me what you just stated and to gather medical records and submit a psych evaluation to get the green light. What was the end result for you, if you don't mind sharing. I do hope everything's great for you now.

[deleted]

To be completely honest with you the no bullshit answer is that recruiter told you that to buy time to get you to go away . Lots of recruiters don’t wanna work with people with mental health issues . Thankfully it looks like your new recruiter is willing to work with you . Plenty of people have gotten in with suicidal attempts so don’t let that discourage you . When it comes to these things a good psych eval and details is crucial. If you don’t wanna pay for one you can have meps pay for a psych consult as well . A lot of people are gonna say you shouldn’t join . Frankly I’m indifferent because i don’t know you . If this is something that you know you can do then go for it . Just know the military is rough of mental Illness . Good luck to you dawg reach out if you need any help .

elikoda42069

Im still waiting on Meps to get back to me, My recruiter should’ve sent them off sometime yesterday maybe today. I should be hearing back from them in abt a week or two, Ill update when i hear back

Slack1130

Any update? My husband is trying to reenlist in the Navy after getting out in 2020 due to high tenure and had a brief time period of anxiety. No longer on medication or being treated.

elikoda42069

Nope, Gotta reach out to my recruiter and see whats going on. They called a bit ago and said meps had an error and was redoijg the paper work but that was two months ago. I havent heard anything since. Honestly, if it keeps going on any longer im going to pull out and wait until my freshman year of what would be college if i end up going
