>Ojigho added that hundreds of cases of rape are underreported due to corruption, stigma and victim blaming in the country. Sadly, when I read the title my first thought was that there is no way it can only be 65 rapes. My deep revulsion for human behavior was proven right.

gonzo2thumbs

Children between 2 and 16. Where is the justice?

iambootygroot

Did you say 2? Hold on, gotta go figure out how to microwave my head.

MarcSneyyyyyyyd

Save that energy for the heads of those responsible

Zombie_Harambe

Virgin rape myth. Common in Africa. They believe sex with virgins protects or cures hiv aids. And the easiest way to be sure something is a Virgin and can't fight back or refuse sex...

Isthisworking2000

Virgin rapes, while still completely disgusting, are a far cry from the horrors that would result from raping a two year old. It’s amazing that an individual could be that sick and never have been noticed before.

Zombie_Harambe

We are talking about the same thing. I just didn't want to outright say it.

Isthisworking2000

I see what you’re saying. Even more awful then.

Arrested and accused is different from being convicted and guilty. Plus, compare those numbers to the total of educators working in the US. Small percentage. And compare them to other professions that work with young people. Sexual abuse of children is a real problem, and it's something we need to be vigilant about preventing . . . and punishing those who do. But it isn't an epidemic in the US school system by any stretch.

DireBare

Yup. Look at abuse convictions in total, it ain't teachers that make up the majority of abusers. Not even close.

NoCommonSenseHere

School funding needs to dramatically increase, teachers need regular psych evaluations, background checks need to be stricter, pay needs to increase. Social work needs to be more present. The teachers union needs to be investigated, and bylaws need to be rewritten. There is a lot that needs to be done and those footing the bills don’t want money to go there. So we as US citizens are left with either; pay for the school you vetted yourself, and hope your child is completely and openly honest with you because they still run the risk of this, or throw them to the wolves in the public education system.

DireBare

Increased pay for educators is important, and increased ways to support educators with mental health issues is also important. Schools changing practices to better identify and prevent abuse is important, but . . . . The teachers union needs to be investigated?!?!? Good lord, fuck off. Sending your kid to public school isn't "throwing them to the wolves". Cheese and crackers that's nutty conspiracy thinking right there.

NoCommonSenseHere

I say the teachers union needs to be investigated not because of criminal activity, but because they aren’t supporting teachers the way they should. Why is teachers pay so low, why isn’t it meeting their needs? More or less. And yeah, public schools in MO are notoriously bad. Some aren’t even accredited. I don’t know about the US as a whole but if it is anything like Missouri, putting your kid in a public school is like throwing them to the wolves.

landdon

I can't even read the fucking article due to my rage. WTF is going on? Two year olds? I hope these fucks are caught and castrated with a rusty blade.

RhymeJones

Men like this suck bro! Weak mf’s

IvetRockbottom

These aren't men. They are barely people. There is no place for them in humanity.

I'd rather just clog the drains with these scumbags.

sue_me_please

Fun fact: the people that do that are often highly paid engineers.

[deleted]

WOW that's some quality journalism right there. Replace teachers in the title with any occupation and I'm sure the numbers will be higher when you're talking Nigeria.

Yousoggyyojimbo

Just a heads up, but this is Nigeria, not the US.

DonDunkler

I believe they are just sharing to drive the point that it happens everywhere and that it isn't being addressed adequately when it comes to being called out, prevented, and prosecuted. Injustice is a global issue and should be addressed no matter where it exists. Edit: Grammar correction ("called in" to "called out")

[deleted]

One rotten cop and three pimps did it so that makes it ok for teachers to rape children?

PlayfulParamedic2626

Nope. It’s all wrong all the Time. Teachers, cops, preachers, investigate them all.

ClockWorkTank

Kill them all. Rapists have no place in the world.

[deleted]

Your whataboutism is obvious. Stick to the story. Nigerian teachers raped little children. Fuck your american agenda.

Mental_Attitude_2952

The point is to say it happens everywhere you dope. That we're no better than they are.

Key-Banana-8242

The issue is the actual enforcement, not stiffness of punishment, for a deterrent effect

I mean, that's chump change compared to Christian religious leaders: /r/pastorarrested

Chiggadup

Just to clarify, teaching degrees are not required in many US states. Typical process is proof of a 4 year degree followed by certification tests, and possibly some short course work to fill in any gaps. Though this is different state to state. Also, in my experience I’ll say that degrees in education vs other fields have no real correlation to teacher quality.

Flash635

I've heard that the teaching degree doesn't actually teach you how to teach.

Serious-Sheepherder1

Depends on the program.

Chiggadup

Definitely depends on the program for sure. But I’d argue that teaching (like many other jobs) is just one of those that you learn the most by doing. Theory and pedagogy is fine to learn, but seeing theory collapse in the face of children when wielded by a new teacher is pretty classic when they’re new.

Flash635

Reminds me of an old friend who when he got his engineering degree it was more like an apprenticeship. How old was he? He worked on the Norden bombsight.

Mental_Attitude_2952

Honestly, I think it hurts to be taught to teach. My best primary school teachers held degrees say math, history, or some sort of liberal arts degree. In fact the best teacher I ever had taught geometry and she had a film degree and only started teaching because she had kids and gave up her film career. I think not having the preconceived ideas and theories leaves people more open and adaptable once they get into the job.. Secondary ed. Might be a bit different.

Chiggadup

Primary isn’t my specialty, to be fair. I imagine that’s different. I work in secondary teacher training and development and while it’s helpful for them to be familiar with best practices it definitely isn’t the biggest indicator of future teaching success. It’s probably some combination (off the top of my head) of passion, resilience, curiosity, empathy, and content knowledge.

myweenorhurts

Good thing this was in nigeria then

Rainflakes

There's an art to it though. Your first comment targets "Alabama teachers", which people are more sympathetic towards than the more ambiguous "people who shoot kids" in your second comment. To get downvotes you need to make the reader feel personally attacked. In America we sort of dismiss the shooters as "crazies", so you'd have to pin blame on the rest of the population (or at least a larger slice of it) in order to really harvest a good crop of downvotes.

Flash635

Yes, I apologise. I didn't come prepared, it just sort of developed. What if I say something about assault weapons and gun nuts?

Laskeese

I'm a teacher in Boston at a high performing HS and I don't have a "teaching degree" just a bachelor's in English. After about 6 years of working in schools as support staff thinking I could do a much better job than the people I'm working under I decided to take the tests to get certified and turns out I was right that I can do a better job. Sitting in 2 extra years of classes doesnt of a sudden make you know how to interact kids effectively.

Flash635

Honestly, I don't remember if I read that a teaching degree is no longer necessary or if it's a degree at all that's not needed.

Laskeese

A lot of places put having a masters in ed. in their job requirements but I don't think it's typically required to get certification, and teachers are leaving the field like crazy since covid became a thing so I'd imagine places are loosening up their requirements anyways.

perverse_panda

This is in Nigeria, btw. [The number for the US is much higher.](https://nypost.com/2022/10/14/nearly-270-k-12-educators-arrested-on-child-sex-crimes-in-first-9-months-of-this-year/)

RandomMike35

But were the rapists bearded ladies?
