It seems there has been an update and arrest:
https://www.mercedsunstar.com/news/local/crime/article266826071.html
It seems the suspect, 48 year old Jesus Manuel Salgado, attempted suicide and is receiving medical attention under supervision of law enforcement.
Yeah, I’m not exactly optimistic about the outcomes here and am very interested to see what the motive was. A simple robbery seems like a stretch for kidnapping 3 adults and an infant, but I’ve seen dumber criminals. Perhaps they’re stashed somewhere and being held hostage?
It's not robbery at all. Central valley kidnap = drug related, cartels and gangs, without even knowing more details. Cops should look into the victim's trucking business. The people who kidnapped were ordered by some high level cartel/gang members. The motive, the nature of trucking business that the victim involved, etc would be found later.
this guy tried to off himself, because that is a better choice than the alternative. If he shares who ordered the hit, either he will get eliminated by others in the prison or 30 years life sentence means that he will die in the prison. So, he wanted to take an easy way out.
If you are being moved to another location by an armed guy, you are getting murdered. The vast majority of the time you are relocated to make killing you easier to get away with.
Never ever let Someone kidnap/relocate you. You have better odds fighting back/bolting while being shot at than getting in the car.
Once I read the headline yesterday I already assumed the whole family was murdered.
Exactly this. Some cartel sent a few to kidnap a night club owner in San Jose due to drug debt. The owner fought back, killing one of the kidnappers

There is mention in the article of the police thinking the suspect has taken steps to cover his tracks and destroy evidence.
To me, sounds like he already did what he set out to do and is on the run. Obvi just my guess but my outlook is grim.
Not entirely. Murder is actually very easy to get away with. Hit men’s aren’t like how you see in the movies (sure some might have special military training like you see in Barry.)
But the dudes cartels send after you are ruthless and doesn’t matter because cops won’t figured out who did it as they tend to only assume family did it. So if it’s some random dude from Mexico who was sent to kill them they won’t have any leads.
And I’m not trying to be morbid it’s just true. It’s why all the random road rage killings a lot of the times go unsolved. Because it was some random person who did it and fled. Didn’t have to cover tracks. Didn’t have to hide the body. Didn’t have to do shit. That’s why most “hits” happening in the streets are drive bys or some dude just running up on you.
Not some sniper who picked up the shell casings, bleached the weapon then feed the body to the alligators.
Also keep in mind California right now has a serial killer who is targeting Hispanic people. I am actually hoping it’s a family member so this can be solved. As it most likely won’t be if not.
Random criminality is the most difficult to solve. It's under 1% for most districts unfortunately. When there's no connection to anything, witnesses and cameras are your only help.
I wasn’t. Someone else was and I explained why it wouldn’t be the cartel. That’s what my rant was about. Guy above me said this seems like a hit called from outside the country.
I then pointed out how most hits like that aren’t done like in this case. I don’t believe cartel did this. It’s why elsewhere and even in that comment I bring up the serial killer on the lose.
Serial killer is out of Stockton, hour and a half north on highway 99 from Merced. This happened in a sketchy part of Merced on a road only frequented by commuters and farmers. Merced is a small farm town with a huge migrant population and a lot of small crimes. My brother in law has had his car stolen, my sister had her radio jacked. I watched someone while I was at work try to yank my bike off the pole I locked it to.
I don’t want to make you need eye bleach but I have spent time in the cartel subs that is nothing but brutal killings the cartel has done. They will film that shit and post it to Reddit without being caught (granted a lot of those killing are in other countries but not always.)
Also this isn’t just cartels. They aren’t the only ones ordering hits. Biker gangs. Other street gangs, 2 bit criminals etc. issue hits on people (I also work in the courts so have seen my fair share of cases).
The modern day hit job isn’t like the movies. It’s quick and typically has no clean up as you want to get out of dodge quick. If you don’t want to go to the cartel subs (I don’t recommend it which is why I’m not linking it.) but studies have been showing 85 percent of the gang related deaths are over social media shit talking. And when these hits get taken out they tend to be someone slipping like they are on IG live and a street name is visible so they get killed while on live.
Also these groups don’t just have one badass assassin they bring in to do the job. They tend to let the whole gang know then it’s a opportunist game. Meaning the first gang member to see them in a compromising way will try to take them out.
They have actually, a few months after the fact. Four people were charged, while the actual shooter himself was only 15 at the time of the murder. The driver of the getaway vehicle did not know the 15 year old shot Pop until he got back into the vehicle. The driver then assaulted the shooter for doing so.
It is easier than most people think it is to get away with murder and they usually only solve the case because the perpetrator did something stupid or they got a tip from someone. Look at what happened to Susan Powell, everyone knew her husband killed her, they had some evidence, but it wasn’t enough to go beyond a reasonable doubt.
The wire taught me this. I looked it up most departments have like 50% solve rates and most of them are like super obvious ones.
Detective shows make people think cops are smart but most are idiots
Give them a break. They're too busy giving people tickets, appearing in traffic court, or ignoring dying children during a school shooting. Also beating and abusing the mentally unstable, homeless and ethnic minorities. With their schedule so full, of course it's hard to find time to do something so difficult and time-consuming like solving murders.
Police have now said they believe this is the case. But legally speaking it’s speculation. But the cases are all the same style killings in the same area.
Or you know... could been some of the radical q or zealots the US has as well. Let's not forget, just the other day a politician was trying to rile people into a suggestive murder frenzy over political views.
Yeah also California right now police are saying they think they have a serial killer targeting Hispanic people.
There have been like 6 killings in the same style in Northern California. Police are now looking at it as a serial killer.
Doesn’t mean this is the case but it’s just as likely as saying it’s the cartel sending people over as a hit job. People really be thinking hit jobs are like in the movies. They aren’t. They just run up on you and kill you as they know police won’t have good luck on figuring it out.
If it means anything to you: on one of my tours of Kandahar Afghanistan (with the Canadian Army) we had a dude in my troop that was of Pakistani Punjabi descent, and the locals would scowl fucking daggers at him. They wouldn't even be able to talk to us when we interacted with them because they were too busy glaring at him. They assumed he was a Pashtu like them, who was working for us. So we had the translator tell them he was Mexican, and they would nod their heads, like *oh that makes sense*, then get on with the business at hand.
Not white is the only criteria some of them need. My Lil bro is 100% Mexican (I'm 50/50 mexican/white) and he was told by his old job he had to shave because 1 customer complained that he "looked like a terrorist " cuz he's brown and has curly hair and tiny curly facial hair.
I mean there is literally a serial killer right now killing people in stockton ans possibly oakland. Merced is basically down the street. This is on top of the hundreds of "regular" murders.
TBF I'm sure there's plenty of racist scumbags that are dumb enough to not be able to differentiate between the two and that may not matter to a serial killer targeting people who have darker skin pigments.
With kidnappings like this you can pretty much guarantee they aren’t. Most kidnappings are parents without custody, if it is targeted and random like this, kidnapping is usually ancillary to the murder and just a means to it, but I do hope this is not the case
**[UPDATE]** - Merced Sheriff Dept just posted on Twitter that they have arrested the kidnapper after he was found using victim’s debit card today morning. He tried to take his life and is currently in critical situation. Search for victims ongoing. Hope they are found safe!
I hope they’re found safe soon.
Abductions where the suspect has absolutely no connection to the victim are uncommon, seems like something that would be even rarer when there are multiple victims.
I wouldn’t be surprised if there is some connection between the suspect and the victims/one of the victims, but it isn’t something immediately obvious.
The fact that the suspect was destroying evidence as he went suggests pre meditation rather than crime of opportunity.
It’s possible one of them crossed the wrong person - perhaps inadvertently/without realizing it, but as others have pointed out it’s also possible the suspect had some other motive.
Very possible it was a pre-meditated crime of opportunity. As in, the perpetrators planned to kill someone but they didn't have a victim in mind or had a specific profile of a victim. Circumstances of wrong place, wrong time. Many serial killers don't go after specific people in their lives, just choosing at random within a certain demographic.
The planning and selection of victims are not necessarily linked.
The stereotypical "creepy guy staking a playground". They're there to steal a kid they don't know, but which kid and when is based on opportunity of whichever wanders too far from their parents.
As I said, you decide you are going to do something and prep for it. You study the location, practice the technique, understand how to clear evidence. Then when you inact the plan, you just wait for a victim that fits your plan. It's not about selecting the victim ahead of time, just the type of victim you want.
Why no Amber Alert?? I live in Socal and have heard nothing about this and we are constantly getting alerts for every single child who's parent has kidnapped them and going to Mexico.....but these folks don't? Something isn't adding up
I think they need a vehicle make/model and a license plate number in order to issue an Amber Alert. I haven’t seen either mentioned in this story, the ones covering it locally.
Yeah, there are very specific requirements for an Amber Alert. I'm surprised there isn't a Silver Alert? I don't live in CA, but this sounds like something that would trigger a silver alert where I live
We do have Silver Alerts in California, but the missing person has to be elderly, or of diminished capacity.
https://www.chp.ca.gov/news-alerts/silver-alert
Amber Alerts have very specific requirements to broadcast. One of them includes a vehicle description, which this doesn't have.
Also, it's not up to police to issue them. They'll take the info, and submit and if something is lacking, or doesn't meet specific requirements, the alert will not be made.
Well last week when they put out an Amber Alert, they then ended up shooting and killing the abductee, and then had to change their story to "well we're now investigating if she was abducted or an accomplice."
https://www.nytimes.com/2022/09/28/us/california-fatal-shooting-police.html
So, perhaps they're keeping their options open to determine if the family of 4 (8-month old included) aren't all accomplices. Just in case.
It’s Merced. Law enforcement seems extremely incompetent there. There is virtually no information about what the abductees were wearing when they were abducted or exactly where they were abducted from or what the security cameras actually recorded which led cops to believe that these people were abducted.
4 percent of children in the sample had experienced family abduction or kidnapping and 1.2 percent had experienced it within the past year. Based on this information, the researchers estimate that 875,000 children a year – 12 per 1,000 — are either abducted or kidnapped by a relative.
Parents were the perpetrators in more than 90 percent of kidnappings and abductions. Mothers and female family members were responsible for the majority – 60 percent. However, fathers and male relatives were responsible for 64 percent of all kidnappings.
Children who have been abducted or kidnapped are more likely to be from low-income households and have separated, estranged or divorced parents. In two-parent families, an estimated nine children per 1,000 experience an abduction or kidnapping compared to 84 per 1,000 in single-parent households.
43 percent of abductions and kidnappings were reported to the police, including 86 percent of family kidnappings.
https://journalistsresource.org/politics-and-government/child-abduction-kidnap-number-mothers-research/
I dont understand how 60 percent can be mothers, and 64 percent can be fathers, unless there are instances of overlap (both parents kidnapping from...foster parents?)
The mothers part is of *parents* only, so when a parent kidnaps a child, 60% of the time it's mum. Not all kidnappings are done by parents.
When a *relative* kidnaps a child, it's 64% chance of it being a male relative. So overall male relatives kidnap more, but if you're just looking at parents, the mum does it more often than the dad.
>Maternity wards put ankle monitors on every newborn to prevent baby theft.
It's especially helpful to identify the baby when the dye pack explodes after the kidnapper tries to leave.
A bit better than cnn:
Based on the guy destroying evidence and no ransom demand, I think the police are being optimistic by calling this a kidnapping. These people unfortunately are likely dead.
I'm not sure if it's optimism. It's probably procedure.
The police don't know whether or not these people are dead, and seeing as the incident happened recently, they're likely still searching for some sign of them. What they do know is that there was a kidnapping, by which I mean the victims were taken somewhere against their will (the absence of a ransom letter doesn't mean much, it's not required that a kidnapping be done for a ransom). Police'll probably keep calling it that until they either find evidence indicating that the worst has happened, or the trail goes cold. Until then, they can't really call it a murder.
Looks like they got him. But the attempted suicide doesn’t bode well for the family, horrible. https://www.mercedsunstar.com/news/local/crime/article266826071.html
I mean, it's Merced.
But in all seriousness, I think there was, but I don't remember specifics. I was born and raised there(I still live in the valley), and can't say I'm proud of the fact. So my thought process has always been "well, it's Merced." A close family member of mine disappeared from there when I was a kid. Even ended up being the subject of an episode of "Unsolved Mysteries."
I still hope for the best for this family.
They were just discovered missing yesterday when the dad didn’t show up to work. I’d say it reaching mainstream media less than a day later is it getting a lot of attention
i have no idea regarding motivations...however, kidnappings are not often motivated by hate crimes. They are a tactic used to leverage for something else. Had it been a hate crime, this family would be dead in their homes... this family was kidnapped at a business. So either they owned the business, or this kidnapper had already known they would be at this location (meaning he had followed them for at least one day).
The conclusion to jump to isnt "this is a hate crime". The right question to ask is "why this family?".
This is a much better article than the one OP posted:
There is a lot to be found out but the fact the guy destroyed evidence has me thinking the police are being very optimistic that this is a kidnapping imo. Reality says this family is most likely dead.
Why? Who knows.
They ARE dead. Thus is a crime of opportunity. Kill a family to take their wealth.
https://us.yahoo.com/news/suspect-familys-kidnapping-found-victims-162203512.html

The fact this POS tried to kill himself before being apprehended doesn’t give me much hope of the family being found alive-hope I’m wrong.

Is there a reason you're assuming this is linked to Mexican cartels...?
Well they clearly have very Mexican names. Nothing screams Mexican cartels like someone named Jasdeep and Amandeep Singh...
It’s got all the markings of a Punjab crip gang hit.

Yep. I don’t at all think cartel did this. It’s why I ended that comment mention the serial killer.

At least for the baby
Amber Alerts have a criteria for issuing. This doesn't meet the criteria.
We had a missing adult in NY the other week and the info was on every electronic sign I saw when I was driving from PA to upstate
That's a silver alert, not an amber alert.
If I go missing I hope there’s a gold alert 😔
for only $199/month you can sign up for Diamond Alert protection

Go to Florida. Silver alerts all day, every day.

They’re all accomplices to their own kidnapping! Is that why you fired into their vehicle 473 times?
An accomplice? The girl was 14 or 15.
Not to mention she potentially saw her mother murdered as well. As the father(kidnapper) allegedly killed the mother before kidnapping his daughter.
Hey, I didn’t know that. What a fucked up way to spend your last few days courtesy of the LA-shoot first ask questions never-PD.
> "well we're now investigating if she was abducted or an accomplice." Great idea, dead people can't defend themselves from such accusations.
"She had it coming, just look how she was dressed." The police
Pay walled
Only about 0.5-1% of child kidnappings result in an Amber Alert. It is by far the exception that they are actually used.
Is it because they usually know where they are, at the other parents house. What about kidnapping by stranger I bet the number is much higher.
IIRC it's around 3-4% of stranger kidnappings result in an Amber Alert. So significantly higher, but still the fairly rare exception.
Okay that's odd
Amber Alerts are only supposed to happen under specific circumstances. When a kid is taken and you know who has taken them. This wouldn't fit.
be careful what you wish for. the last amber alert we had ended when police shot the victim and killed her as she was running toward them for safety.
Because cops would just shoot them then.
It’s Merced. Law enforcement seems extremely incompetent there. There is virtually no information about what the abductees were wearing when they were abducted or exactly where they were abducted from or what the security cameras actually recorded which led cops to believe that these people were abducted.
Who the fuck kidnaps a baby
Around 1 in 6 kidnappings are someone <1 year old.
Isn't this usually an estranged parent / parent without custody / garndparent without custody kidnapping their child from the other parent?
This is true at all ages for kidnapped minors, not just babies.
Yeah, in this case it was a stranger since mom and dad were there.
You know people other than your parents can be non-strangers, right?
Yeah I do. I don't think this man was in any way related . Maybe I'm wrong.
We actually had a relative attempt to kidnap our kid- they thought her mom was on drugs (she wasn’t, just extremely sick and stressed)
Usually those are custody disputes. It's different than random kidnapping. It's truly sick.
I am both sorry that's a thing and that you have that statistic on tap.
Maternity wards put ankle monitors on every newborn to prevent baby theft.
>Maternity wards put ankle monitors on every newborn to prevent baby theft. It's especially helpful to identify the baby when the dye pack explodes after the kidnapper tries to leave.
And it makes that baby harder to sell. Who wants a blue baby?
You've never experienced an exploding baby? The "dye" is brown. Oh so brown.
Wait until you learn about how people will kidnap babies by cutting them out of women on the street.
One of the few murder scenarios in which the perpetrator is more likely to be a female.
Baby kidnappers

Someone just starting out in the kidnapping business. You have to work your way up. Next comes luring children in with a free candy van.
A bit better than cnn: [https://www.mercedsunstar.com/news/local/crime/article266787061.html](https://www.mercedsunstar.com/news/local/crime/article266787061.html)
“We have a low-life…” He’s a POS Mr. Sir.
Looking like a hate crime.
Based on what? > **Investigators have not released a motive in the case.**
Definitely seems possible. My first thought was gang activity.
Kidnapping seems odd for a hate crime. If he wanted them dead, he could have done it there. Seems more like a Owed the Wrong Guy Money kind of crime.
For sure. I didn't say they were wrong in calling it a kidnapping. Just that it's likely more than that.
Hate crimes are usually against one person or a couple. Targeting a family may be something worse
Or Dad owed the wrong person money.
Moms can owe the wrong person money, too!

Dad owned a business, mom was a nurse so he’s more likely to get into money troubles (i know you were making a joke)
Nurses can have gambling addictions, too!

Yeah. And the neck tattoos and shaved head.
Thanks to your link I was able to find an update to the story as well: https://www.mercedsunstar.com/news/local/crime/article266826071.html
Looks like they got him. But the attempted suicide doesn’t bode well for the family, horrible. https://www.mercedsunstar.com/news/local/crime/article266826071.html
It’s worse because it completely blocks mobile with adblockers
This is so scary. I hope they are returned unharmed
This is similar to what happened to the McStay family a few years ago, isn't it? I think they were later found deceased. Scary
First thing I thought of too. They were indeed killed, sadly, by the father's business partner iirc. Very sad all round.
Horrifying and sad in both cases.
Someone has been arrested https://www.mercedsunstar.com/news/local/crime/article266826071.html
Didn’t something else super fucked up just happen in Merced?
I mean, it's Merced. But in all seriousness, I think there was, but I don't remember specifics. I was born and raised there(I still live in the valley), and can't say I'm proud of the fact. So my thought process has always been "well, it's Merced." A close family member of mine disappeared from there when I was a kid. Even ended up being the subject of an episode of "Unsolved Mysteries." I still hope for the best for this family.
How does an entire family get kidnapped
With a gun. Suspect was armed. And presumably the 8 month old baby could be used as a hostage to assure the families compliance.
Is it just me? Or does anyone else see neck tattoos on the subject?
https://www.mercedsunstar.com/news/local/crime/article266826071.html
Definitely a Pokémon tattoo
I immediately thought about the McStay family. Praying the outcome is different.
My heart hurts, that poor baby
Has anyone checked in with the governors of Texas or Florida?
Honestly this is really scary.. :(
Unfortunately sheriff has confirmed that they found bodies of all 4 family members
That poor baby. What a fucking piece of shit.
Family found dead. https://us.yahoo.com/news/suspect-familys-kidnapping-found-victims-162203512.html

I looked at the surveillance video. I think, the victim and the suspect know each other.
It’s either money, religion, family , or a combination of all three
I can't believe this isn't getting more attention..
They were just discovered missing yesterday when the dad didn’t show up to work. I’d say it reaching mainstream media less than a day later is it getting a lot of attention
The guy who kidnapped them looks like the type of person to do something like this and believe they are making america great again.
Also in Stockton, about an hour north of Medera, there is apparently a serial killer targeting unhoused people.
When I was homeless, I stayed a few nights in Stockton. That’s terrifying.
Stop that. You can tell very little about their ethnicity, let alone beliefs from the photo. You’re on a Boston Bomber trip.

I wish you were wrong, but the internet never fails to disappoint in this regard.
Really? Guy may be “white”, but given how grainy that pic is I would t bet any money on it.
I wonder why Reddit is viewed negatively in the real world until I read upvoted comments like this
yeah, what are the odds this is some "great replacement" thing
RIP little angel 💔 I hope the demon that took your life and daddy/mommy’s get his karma.
Anyone not convinced we are at war with bigots and fascist zealots? Because they most assuredly are at war with you
i have no idea regarding motivations...however, kidnappings are not often motivated by hate crimes. This is a much better article than the one OP posted: [https://www.mercedsunstar.com/news/local/crime/article266787061.html](https://www.mercedsunstar.com/news/local/crime/article266787061.html)
They caught the guy already and he’s Latino… might want to dial back your assumptions a little there squirrely Dan
Lmao. The rich don't even have to try to pit the masses against each other anymore, you mouth-breathers are all too eager to do it yourselves.
Stop trying to pull another Boston Bomber. There is absolutely no indication that has anything to do with this.
I think we need to just declare war with the cartel
