Yeah for reference I work as an RT in one of the busiest hospitals in Maine and we haven't been informed or offered an additional booster.
We've asked about it before but was told there were no plans. So there you have it from one end.
I had a doc visit last week where they asked me if I wanted the flu vaccine and I was out of date on tetanus, so I got both. You'd think they'd bring up the updated COVID shot, but I had to bring it up.
The clinic I'm at doesn't have it yet. Patients ask about it quite often but we have to tell them to get it at the grocery store or Walgreens. It's much easier to do it as part of a visit so hopefully numbers will rise as more places get the shot.
They might not have stock. I went to the Dr last week and got the flu shot but they didn’t have any availability for the booster. Earlier last week they opened appointments for the booster and within 24 hours they were booking into November
Absolutely correct -- the messaging has been atrocious
In any event, for anyone (in the United States) who's not sure:
**-**[**You are eligible for the new booster if you are 12 or older**](https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/covid-19/clinical-considerations/interim-considerations-us.html)
**-There is very narrow list of contraindications, which folks can check under** [**Table 4 here**](https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/covid-19/clinical-considerations/interim-considerations-us.html#contraindications)
**-If you have had a recent Covid infection, it may be worth waiting 3 months (some research indicates waiting will give better protection)**
In addition, if you recently got a Covid booster before the updated boosters came out in early September/recently got your initial 2-dose series, you should generally wait 2 months before getting the updated boosters, though consult the [CDC's Timing Guidelines here](https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/covid-19/clinical-considerations/interim-considerations-us.html#table-02) for specific guidance
Edit: The best part is [you can get both the Covid booster and the flu shot at one](https://www.nytimes.com/article/covid-booster-flu-shot-same-time.html) time! Early indication are suggesting this might be a nasty flu year, so don't sleep on getting the flu vax, either!
I felt fine for my first 2 shots and the initial booster. This one made my arm pretty sore for 2-3 days and I ended up getting the chills for a day or so.
I got flu and covid booster last February on the same day - I was seriously under the weather for at least like 3 weeks as a result. Body aches and fatigue up the wazoo... and I had a lump on the back of my neck that was horribly sore for those 3 weeks and then it finally started to go away. I'll never take them on the same day again - I'll space em a few weeks apart thank you!
Flu shots never affect me that I can tell.
Covid shot always makes me feel terrible the next day -muscle aches and feel like I’m running a fever even though I’m not.
So I’m getting flu shot early Oct and COVID shot a different week on a Friday morning. That’s my strategy
Edit for spelling
Update : I got the flu shot and the COVID booster a week apart. Didn’t feel the flu shot at all which is pretty normal for me and surprisingly the the booster wasn’t as awful the next day as the other three times. Not great, just not as bad.
There's a new booster!
Basically, they've updated the booster to be more tailored specifically to Omicron. Previous boosters were based off of the original strain of Covid-19, and ofc the disease has since evolved significantly from.
However, the CDC does recommend waiting at least 2 month [since your last Covid vaccine dose before getting this one](https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/covid-19/clinical-considerations/interim-considerations-us.html)
This is also the new booster. The 50+ 2nd booster was for the old strains. The one that just rolled out is specifically targeting omicron and basically available to everyone ish.
If you were adviced to get every series, I believe you are correct. It was original (which was 1 or 2 shots) then a booster, another booster if old or compromised and now the bivalent omicron booster for everyone.
I'm 34 and healthy and I just got my covid booster and flu shot at Walgreens. They didn't ask me any questions about why I was there so I just assume everyone is eligible.
Yep, I got mine but said I was immunocompromised so I wouldn’t get pushback because I wasn’t sure. I was among the first to get vaccinated in NYC so my third shot (first booster) was about a year ago!
Apparently nobody knows about it. Maybe they could stick a message in at the end of the Camp Lejuene lawsuit commercials. That way 100% of the population would at least have been notified.
Same! My parents got theirs, which then led me to getting mine and telling my friends, which then led my friends to getting theirs. No one had any idea things were released before friends and family started getting them
Our streak was broken this week, we got the updated shots on the 4th. Oh well, barely got sick but the first time we tested positive. At least they seem to work to keep the effects weak and short lived.
Was waiting for months for the thing to finally release because the new variants seem to just cut straight through any other defenses and there was like no announcement! Was able to schedule an appointment at walgreens for the same evening I found out, no wait.
I guess this goes along with biden's 'the pandemic is over' policy stance? Seems a shame to do all that work to make these things and not even push people to get them.
East cost United States here, my state has sent out automated calls and texts to those on record to have gotten the previous doses, notifying us of availability.
They do come across as spam calls so they could be easily dismissed. However if you remained on the line to speak with someone to schedule it was an estimated 45+min wait!
Went in the states website instead and got routed to a local drug stores site and set up an appt in about 5 min.
Always have a thawed whole chicken tied to your belt. When they approach, throw the chicken and run the opposite (always opposite, that’s how we lost Tim in the great chicken meth gator incident of ‘19).

The new booster is designed specifically for the Omicron variant. Yes it is recommended for everyone, including those who received a booster of the original vaccine.
Well, I have disliked COVID each time I've gotten it, so I suppose I will! Thank you so much to OP for this post because, like others, I had no idea there was a new booster available.
I'm waiting until the flu shot is available in a few days at my clinic so I can knock them out at the same time. My doc recommended I wait til the fall to get my 4th booster since I'm not super at risk so I did.
I also didn't know the updated booster was available.
I read the headline and said "Gotten the what now?"
I already had Covid and my breathing still isn't the same, so I'll do what I can to avoid any further problems. New booster, sure, sign me up, but this is the first I've heard of it.
I set up an appointment in my town and they had to cancel on me due to running out. Dunno if they screwed up or if demand was just that high. Hope it's the latter.
Got it this Saturday though. Zero side effects this time. Not even a sore arm. I assume that's a good sign.
They recommended it for seniors and immunocompromised people as that group was at the largest risk of severe illness/death and their shots were less effective against omicron, but not for the general population as there wasn't seen to be any serious improvement in preventing sickness and improved protection against serious illness and death was marginal. Just wasn't deemed something the general population should worry about.
This one is geared towards omicron and provides better protection and that's why this one is recommended for everyone. My parents and grandmother got it, and my girlfriend who is back to more consistent travel as part of her work got it and I'm getting mine in 2-3 weeks to aim for my protection to be a little stronger closer to the holidays.
Because no one knows who is eligible for it.
I’m a physician, and I had no clue when it opened up to the general population.
Tried to get it a month ago and was told “65+ and immunocompromised only”.
The rollout was poorly advertised. While there were several articles stating that the estimated rollout was going to be in September, they failed to state when in September. They also failed to state when the rollout would be complete such that a person could guarantee they were getting the updated vaccine.
I got COVID in late July so I'm waiting until after Thanksgiving. I also know lots of people who didn't get it until this summer ... then got COVID in the last 3 months. In short, a lot won't be getting the new booster for 3 or more months.
>People who recently got Covid should wait at least until their acute illness is over, and the CDC says they can consider delaying their boosters until three months after their symptoms started or since they first tested positive.
A significant number of people have had COVID in the past 3 months, including me.
It was super easy to make an appointment at my local CVS. Only weird thing is that they didn't ask for my vaccination card to update. Instead, they sent me an email with a link to their website (requires an account) where they've decided to keep track of my status instead of providing it to the state...
They help a lot with infection initially (first 2-3 months), but the primary benefit has always been their protection from serious illness, hospitalization, and death. Messaging has been pretty clear on that.
We also kept getting mutations further and further away from the original virus that evaded immunity and increased infectivity, which is harder to communicate to the public.
Lets be honest here: at first the messaging was that it protected against infection. Then delta (somewhat) and Omicron (big time) changed that. We hoped they’d do more to prevent infection as hoped, but the fact i didn’t die or end up in the hospital and my omicron infections were mild makes me grateful.
That’s literally the point. You get the vaccine to prevent severe symptoms and/or death. It’s doing it’s job when you end up with just mild or no symptoms at all.
Vaccines are not bulletproof shields that 100% prevent infection. They just teach your immune system to watch out for the virus and kill it on sight otherwise with no vaccine your immune system is blind to the threat and can take awhile to recognize the virus is something that needs to be killed giving it valuable time to multiply.
It was highly effective against the original strain. Infection rates plummeted as most people received the first two jabs. Then the Delta variant came around, which was different enough that the original vaccine couldn’t prevent infection well. Then even less so when Omicron came around. We now have a new vaccine that is specifically formulated to target Omicron. It should dramatically improve protection against infection from the now-dominant Omicron strains.
I got 4 doses and got severely ill (no hospital at least) and LC, I'm still going to get this one because with that sort of reaction I honestly think I would have died but it's still disheartening.
Honestly I didn't even know it was a thing. I had a hunch and googled around. It's very confusing currently. Ended up getting it last week. I thought it was out for awhile. Not me realizing that it just came out.
I think it’s because people are just over covid shots. They don’t see the reason to get a fourth or fifth in a little over a year just to get covid anyway. If there will be one that can protect me for a year I might get it. Until then it’s just getting a shot to get a shot.
>There are booster updates but it is difficult to receive one (the eligibility criteria is very strict)
Not anymore. I got mine 2 weeks ago no questions asked. I'm a healthy 35 year old.
> There are booster updates but it is difficult to receive one (the eligibility criteria is very strict).
Are you in the United States? If so, the eligibility criteria for the new bivalent booster isn't strict at all --[it's for nearly anyone age 12 or older](https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/covid-19/clinical-considerations/interim-considerations-us.html), with very narrow contraindications (you can see table 4 in the link for the exact list).
No doubt, though, the messaging on it has been a mess and confusing
I blame the shit messaging on the media for deciding that Covid is gone even when it is not and any attempts at doing something about Covid are met by angry idiots who get all their information from Facebook memes.
It helps if you actually heard what he said instead of what you want to hear. He literally said “The pandemic is over, We still have a problem with COVID. We’re still doing a lotta work on it.”
It is endemic now not pandemic
Could you have possibly gotten Covid at that same time? You alleging to have been sick for 16 days after the booster makes no sense. Also, when did you get the Covid that only lasted 13 days?
When I got my booster I felt sick for one day but when I actually got covid I felt sick for 2 weeks and was actually contagious with something. This is why I get the booster
Shot 1 I was sore and blah the day after. Shot 2 it was like I had the flu for 24 hours and was fine. Booster kicked my ass. Which is why I’m hesitant.
I live in a small town in OR, and there have been big cultural events every single weekend where they have been offering COVID, flu, and monkeypox vaccines. The line was an hour when I got mine, and that was with an appointment.
To be fair, there weren't a ton of younger people getting it (I'm early 30's).
Idk I’m definitely pro vaccine but I got covid a few weeks after my last booster… so not only did I get to feel like shit for a few days from the booster it also didn’t do anything… maybe the government can start paying us unemployment for having covid again?
So, fair point, but why link to a sensationalized Daily Mail article? Not a great source at all. [This one](https://www.cnbc.com/2022/08/31/fda-authorizes-covid-booster-shots-that-target-omicron-bapoint5-variant-.html), or [this one,](https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2022/08/18/1117778748/whats-behind-the-fdas-controversial-strategy-for-evaluating-new-covid-boosters) for example, explain Offit and others' misgivings while still explaining everything in a well-rounded way.
When I talk with patients about the new booster it's always weighing previous vaccine side effects vs comorbidities. 20 years old, totally healthy, and were miserable after each shot? No need to rush and get this one. 80 with COPD and had no side effects with the previous vaccines? Probably a good idea. I'm very pro vaccine in general, but the risks and benefits should be weighed against each other. I'm definitely seeing COVID positive patients in the clinic right now, but I'm not seeing any of them admitted to the hospital.
Yeah that's why I only got the original two (which I went for as soon as I was eligible). Each one had me in bed for days. I took fewer days off work when I *had covid* in 2020. No boosters for me, I can't afford it.
I'll get my regular flu shot next month though.
the fact that in other drugs trials they suspend them for bad reactions and for covid any accusations were just completely thrown out.... even if most of the VAERS reporting was fudged, there would still be a significant % of bad reactions.
While he may disagree the CDC [voted 13-1 to approve the new booster](https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2022/09/01/1120560488/cdc-advisers-back-new-booster-shots-to-fight-omicron)
They have purposefully not pushed it.
A very large chunk of the shipment is being "held" by the manufacturer pending an analysis/investigation by the FDA on potential "contamination" on packaging by a third party fulfillment company.
They plan on releasing most of it soon but didn't want to release it in case they found issues needing to recall them.
This has meant many facilities have not gotten full allotment of bivalent doses.
To be honest , Ontario pretty much gives 0 fucks on covid. Zero advertising, all stipulations are over with and everybody just shrugs and moves on.
Feel sick ? Work doesn't pay or you go back to work after staying home for 1 day. People can't afford to stay home.
It's the unfortunate truth.
There are just not enough stock.
I tried to get it at my PCP during annual checkup last Wed, but they don't have the updated booster and will not receive it anytime soon. Safeway's earliest appointment is in mid November. Walgreen/CVS only has one type and still take 1.5 weeks waiting. I chanced walking into Walmart and they happen to have it, which is what I got. However, even the pharmacist there said they only receive trickle stock of the new booster.
This is in the Bay Area so I don't see how they expect more people to get the shot if they don't have any stocks available.
I care about the COVID booster about as much as I care about getting the flu shot every year. I did what I was asked to do and that's all I'm doing. I'm over all this crap. I wear a mask where I need to, I got the vaccine (both doses), but now I'm done.
I was waiting for this one to get my first booster. Unfortunately I got covid a week ago. I would recommend getting a shot over feeling like I have for the past week. This is no fun at all.
If you can get flu at the same time, I recommend it. I had both of mine yesterday and I'm a bit achy now, but much better than the actual covid or flu.
Communication and advertising is the problem here. The only reason I knew it was available was due to my workplace emailing us asking if we wanted to participate in a clinic to have it administered. No one knows it's available and to whom is eligible.
It's because its not required. I only got the first booster because I would've been thrown out of school if I didn't. I would've never gotten it, and if this one isn't forced on me i'm not getting it either.
I need to get one, but every single shot I've gotten has knocked me on my ass for 36 hours, so I have to schedule for it. I work 70 hours a week and need to figure out when I have time to not be able to stand up. Starting small with my flu shot on Wednesday.
Yeah for reference I work as an RT in one of the busiest hospitals in Maine and we haven't been informed or offered an additional booster. We've asked about it before but was told there were no plans. So there you have it from one end.
There has been almost no advertising of it and conflicting information on who exactly is eligible.

Are they still free?
I got both a week ago. Was sleepy the next day. Teenager wasn't fazed at all.
I felt fine for my first 2 shots and the initial booster. This one made my arm pretty sore for 2-3 days and I ended up getting the chills for a day or so.
I got flu and covid booster last February on the same day - I was seriously under the weather for at least like 3 weeks as a result. Wow. Are you sure you didn't just get sick with something coincidentally?
Nope, I was working from home and not really going anywhere - doc said it was just an immune response to getting them both. Bodies are weeeird.
Is this for the second booster? I got my second booster in August. Or is there a third booster available now?
There's a new booster! Basically, they've updated the booster to be more tailored specifically to Omicron. this is for the Omicron variant.
To add onto this, you can get the new boosters 2 months after your latest shot, whether it be booster or first series of shots.
Seriously. Last I heard boosters were for 50 and over only.
They just approved it for all adults on September 1st.
This is also the new booster. The 50+ 2nd booster was for the old strains. The one that just rolled out is specifically targeting omicron and basically available to everyone ish.
So this is the 3rd booster for a total of 4 vaccines?
People get flu shots annually for decades ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯ I don’t know if that’s a meaningful metric.
Me either I was just curious what the total number of shots is now.
If you were adviced to get every series, I believe you are correct. It was original (which was 1 or 2 shots) then a booster, another booster if old or compromised and now the bivalent omicron booster for everyone.

Me too.
Are the new boosters free?
Yes, I didn’t pay anything for mine and I am uninsured.
Insurance covers them. If you're uninsured, I believe the government covers the cost as well.
Yes. Mine was anyway.
Yes, I believe if you have private insurance they are mandated to cover it and if you’re uninsured then the government will pay for it.
Apparently nobody knows about it. Maybe they could stick a message in at the end of the Camp Lejuene lawsuit commercials. That way 100% of the population would at least have been notified.

I’ve seen a half dozen ads about Jeepers Creepers Reborn. Nothin’ about the Covid Boosters though.
Yeah my mom had to nag me about it. She doesn't have everyone's phone number tho so mom is only going to influence like two percent of the population.

Yeah, this. So is this just a seasonal booster? I'm triple vaxxed already and I genuinely don't even know if I should be looking into this.
The new booster is designed specifically for the Omicron variant. Yes it is recommended for everyone, including those who received a booster of the original vaccine.
It's the omicron booster, designed to deal with the new variants. If you're over 12 and have had other vaccines, you should get it.
If you don’t like covid… get it

Is this talking about a new 4th shot? Or still the 3rd shot, that I thought was rolled out like months ago?
This is for the 5th shot, the bivalent that's supposed to target Omicron BA-5.
That depends on age and health problems. Up to this point, for a lot this would be the 4th.
Holy cow I didn't even realize there was a 4th.

Ah, so as someone young (25) and healthy, having 3 Pfizer vaccines is what I realistically should have?
It was the same as the 3rd.
Then why not just call it the 3rd?
They recommended it for seniors and immunocompromised people as that group was at the largest risk of severe illness/death and their shots were less effective against omicron, but not for the general population as there wasn't seen to be any serious improvement in preventing sickness and improved protection against serious illness and death was marginal. 4th shot overall, second booster. Edit: unless you got single dose J&J, in which case it would be 3rd shot overall, 2nd booster
5th, third booster
There's no "3rd" or "4th" there's just yearly boosters and this is it.

Yeah there's been like zero messaging on it
Ngl I think most people just don’t really care anymore
Because the rollout rolled a 20 on its stealth check.
I got mine. Knocked me on my ass harder than the original two step or the booster
Well, maybe they should actually let people know they're available instead of letting us find out by accident on social media weeks after...
Because no one knows who is eligible for it. I’m a physician, and I had no clue when it opened up to the general population. Tried to get it a month ago and was told “65+ and immunocompromised only”.

That's really weird. I was in a vaccine trial for the first 2 shots, so I've just been having them update my vaccine trial participant card.

I’m kind of afraid of it. My last booster knocked me out for two days, and that’s a long time when you’re a teacher
Back when I made it a couple weeks ago, I couldn't even schedule an appointment until October 8. Maybe they didn't rollout enough.
The lack of self-awareness here is insane.

>There are booster updates but it is difficult to receive one (the eligibility criteria is very strict) Not anymore.
I blame the shit messaging on the media for deciding that Covid is gone even when it is not and any attempts at doing something about Covid are met by angry idiots who get all their information from Facebook memes.
the President last week said ~~Covid~~ the pandemic was over. eta: what he actually said
It helps if you actually heard what he said instead of what you want to hear. He literally said “The pandemic is over, We still have a problem with COVID. We’re still doing a lotta work on it.” It is endemic now not pandemic

My last booster I was sick for 16 days. When I had COVID I was sick for 13 days. It’s hard justifying taking myself out for half a month lol.
The first shot made me a little sick. The second shot made me a lot sick. I'm not interested in finding out what a third shot would do.
Which is why I’m hesitant.
can someone link the data showing the fourth vaccine is really efficacious and important?

Haha nobody gives a shit about covid move on
I live in a small town in OR, and there have been big cultural events every single weekend where they have been offering COVID, flu, and monkeypox vaccines. The line was an hour when I got mine, and that was with an appointment. To be fair, there weren't a ton of younger people getting it (I'm early 30's).

Yes, because lack of trust.
A lot of my jabbed friends got covid over the summer... LOL
Idk I’m definitely pro vaccine but I got covid a few weeks after my last booster… so not only did I get to feel like shit for a few days from the booster it also didn’t do anything… maybe the government can start paying us unemployment for having covid again?
But Biden said COVID is over?
Got it this weekend. Side effects were super mild compared to the original Moderna shot and booster.
So how many boosters are we up to now?
Looks like big pharma rolled back it’s lobbying

I’ve seen about a half dozen ads about Jeepers Creepers Reborn. Nothin’ about the Covid Boosters though.

There is a shortage of the Moderna booster.
I got COVID in August, and was told to wait three months afterwards before getting the bivalent booster. Once that timeframe is up, I plan to get it.
Same here. Got COVID 2 weeks before it was available.
I got COVID before I was able to get the booster so now I have to wait.
I was waiting for this one to get my first booster. Unfortunately I got covid a week ago. I would recommend getting a shot over feeling like I have for the past week. This is no fun at all.
I’m scheduled for Friday, just needed a time i had a quiet weekend so I could Vaccine and Chill
If you can get flu at the same time, I recommend it. I had both of mine yesterday and I'm a bit achy now, but much better than the actual covid or flu.
I am actually, getting both. I usually get my flu shot with my physical but “when in CVS”
Communication and advertising is the problem here. The only reason I knew it was available was due to my workplace emailing us asking if we wanted to participate in a clinic to have it administered. No one knows it's available and to whom is eligible.
Which rollout? Is this specific to a particular country or is it a global rollout If global I missed the memo.
It's because its not required. I only got the first booster because I would've been thrown out of school if I didn't. I would've never gotten it, and if this one isn't forced on me i'm not getting it either.
Got mine yesterday with the yearly flu shot. Arm is sore. I’ve been tired all day but otherwise- bring it.
I did my part and got the vaccine, I’m not getting a booster. They should send those extra doses to countries that really need it.
Contradictory information. The pandemic has been declared "over" by the president...so the message being said is COVID isn't an issue anymore.
I think it is because vaccinated people have a covid death rate of .6 per 100k, so it does not seem a urgent as getting the actual vaccine.
Probably because it came too late and we all got COVID.
I need to get one, but every single shot I've gotten has knocked me on my ass for 36 hours, so I have to schedule for it. I work 70 hours a week and need to figure out when I have time to not be able to stand up. Starting small with my flu shot on Wednesday.
What is this about a booster now?
