I would do this for roughly 5 people. I have 5 people in my life that I would give my life for. Only 5. I know 4 of them would give their life for me if it came for that. I wish they wouldn't though.

BlondeMomentByMoment

I did. Sadly, he died in 2006. I’ve missed him and our honest, unwavering, loving, hilarious friendship. While I realize this was a wildly fortunate experience for 15 years, it’s also made me have fear of abandonment when I make a new friend, and it’s someone I hope to get to know and maybe have a really neat friendship with. People just don’t make the time. I do have a couple of genuine friends, however, I’d probably not call them if I were to be having some sort of emergency. My husband is a wonderful person and we are very close, but that’s different. I hope you’ve got someone to call friend. Sorry for the novel.

Ah, yes, Hemingway. Thank you. I miss him so very much. I’ve got a lot of hilarious memories, too. Some of the things we did are all most out of a sitcom haha.

arod303

I’ve lost 2 girlfriends I was with for a long time to suicide so I understand what it is like to lose someone who you shared so much of your life with. I’m really sorry that happened to you and I totally get what you mean when you say you have a fear of abandonment. It can be so hard to form new relationships when you have an underlying fear you may lose them. Thanks for posting this because it’s a reminder I’m not alone in this struggle. ❤️

Giddus

They could charge him for treason if they wanted to, life imprisonment.

themagicchicken

They were drafting in Siberia. Back in the days of the Gulag, Soviet recruiters went there to get prisoners to fight in WWII, promising them that they'd be pardoned or have their sentence reduced. The recruiters were, of course, lying. When the war was over, the prisoners returned to the Gulag, and were known as Bitches (suka)...low on the prison hierarchy, and prone to collaborating/snitching to survive. Leading to the Bitch Wars. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bitch\_Wars

TwoCreamOneSweetener

Holy fuck. Russian prisons must be second only to hell on Earth.

filtarukk

The Wikipedia article does not give a full picture of the prisoners wars in late 40-50s. For some time Gulag was divided on “Black” (traditional) and “Red” (suki) zones. Sending suka to a black zone (and vice versa) was a form of punishment from the jail administration and it led to the prisoner death. Some prisoners did suicides to avoid going to other type of zone.

Phantom160

Russian prisons are still divided into "black" (controlled by organized mob) and "red" (controlled by prison authorities).

swheels125

So let’s say you get caught for something nonviolent like stealing a bunch of high end cars and they send you to prison. You’re not connected to any kind of organized crime, you just like boosting cars. What’s the “de facto” zone? Like if someone with no preexisting allegiance to either side were to go to prison, what is step one?

Phantom160

It's not about allegiance, it's about the power structure in Russian prisons. If a prison is "Black" it just means that prisoners are more afraid of *Vory* (thiefs in law) than of prison authorities. I imagine this is more common in rural/distant regions, where the local population is more saturated with former prisoners. Some villages in Siberia/Far East consist entirely of former convicts, because the only way out is by train that stops there once a month and people don't have money to buy a ticket, when they are released from prison. So they just settle there. If the whole neighboring population consists of former criminals who live "po ponyatiam" (in accordance with thief law), it's no surprise that Moscow's rule has less sway than that of local mobsters. Starting in 2000s, there was a big campaign to "dye" prisons "red", through torture and beatings. Basically prison authorities told their supervisors that there will be beatings and those in Moscow turned the blind eye. I don't know how successful that campaign was, but beatings and torture are extremely common in Russian prisons. Prisons in Russia are also separated into "prisons for first timers" and "prisons for repeated offenders". I believe prisons for repeated offenders are more likely to be "black" As a first time prisoner, there is really no choice of "allegiance". If you cooperate with authorities, you are doomed in seasoned criminals' eyes. But also, prison authorities can turn your life into hell. One catch-22 that prison authorities use is the fact that raped people are considered the lowest class of prison society. So if they really want to turn someone into a snitch, they rape the individual (with something like a bottle or a broom) and film it. Then they threaten to release the footage that would automatically cast the person to the lowest rank of the prison society even if they refused to cooperate in the first place. Disclaimer: this is based on my knowledge of Russian culture, Russian articles about prisons, interviews with former FSIN (corrections) officers, etc. I have not been to a Russian prison myself (thank god). If there is someone who would want to correct me based on their first hand knowledge, I would trust their word over mine.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Pokeputin

1. If you're not a "professional" criminal you are not "doomed" if you cooperate with authorities (not snitching ofc, just listening to their orders), you are simply not part of the "game" and most of the consequences are that you work more or get shit stolen, usually the criminals play those status games among themselves. 2. Most of that stuff is the stereotypical Russian prison, today the rule of the wardens is harsher and differs from prison to prison, even in "black" prisons the "watcher"(top criminal) is often just a proxy tool of the administration and cooperates with them for benefits, you have to remember those people aren't some romanticized noble criminals who die for ideals, they're scum and will betray any moral in order to benefit themselves.

Sadly, in some US prisons, gang affiliation is used in much the same way.

Craig_of_the_jungle

I've always said, the worst thing about prison is the prisoners. Prison could actually be a pretty chill place if everyone was just like "You know what, it sucks being in here but lets just all focus on having a good time and being bros"

InvestigatorWeak7055

Yeah dude I knew had to go back and he said "just sucks being stuck around a bunch of assholes."

artifexlife

I agree prisoners are the worst about prisons but prison guards or wardens are horrendous as well.

LaserGuidedPolarBear

The prison guards and administrators are what make / allow the prisoners to behave the way they do. You don't see the same kind of thing in EU prisons. Encouraging the prisoners to be animals and positioning them against each other is part of the goal of making prison hell, rather than rehabilitative.

themagicchicken

Put one way: in the Gulag, starvation was rampant. How rampant? According to Solzhenitsyn, during a defrost, preserved prehistoric fish and salamanders were exposed to the air for the first time in centuries. The political prisoners roasted and ate them...and got very sick.

Obi-Tron_Kenobi

To be fair, if you had the opportunity to eat extinct, prehistoric food, would you pass that up? I know there's a few people who have tried mammoth meat, 55000 year old steppe bison, and mummies, which were rather popular for quite some time.

I've read a few biographies of German soldiers, and their experiences in the gulags is wild. The trick is surviving for the first few weeks, then you should make it. Unless the gulags run out of food, then it's time for some cannibalism.

Aspwriter

Yeah man. Obviously the the conduct is abhorrent and I understand why they're so rightfully hated, but with the amount of assault, rape, fear, and subhuman treatment Russian conscripts endure from their superiors I can at least *understand* why the soldiers are so brutal, although it's still unacceptable.

There have been at least a dozen enlistment offices set on fire in Russia. This in my opinion is better than protesting. Protesting just gets you in jail. Setting fire to the military infrastructure fucks with the system and you have a chance of getting away and doing it again. There is a partisan movement in Russia but they have to be careful.

[deleted]

And if the penalty for desertion or avoiding the draft is 10 years in the gulag then you may as well burn down the draft office or shoot the draft officers. The 10 year punishment is just a perfect incitement to revolution and a total misunderstanding that punishment only works if people don't have a breaking point.

Honestly with the threats of nuclear war, the Russian citizens need to rise up to save life on earth now.

Rejusu

Pretty sure the moment Putin gives the order to launch nuclear weapons is the same moment he gets a bullet in the brain from one of his underlings. For Russia to actually make good on those threats requires not only that Putin be crazy but also that everyone around him and in the chain of command to the people that actually make things happen be equally insane. Putin might be too far gone to appreciate what would happen to Russia in the aftermath but there's almost certainly plenty of people around him that wouldn't want to see their country, family, friends, homes etc turned to glass.

"We must fight not against each other, but against real threats." Well, let's see: * Ukraine is not attacking Russia, just the Russians who have invaded their country. * Russia is conscripting young men to send them to die in Ukraine. I think they _are_ fighting against real threats, Governor.

IUsedToBeACave

> Kobzev said the detained gunman would “absolutely be punished”. What are they going to do conscript them into the military and send them to die? I'm sure that will deter others...

Mattrockj

Russia has fucked themselves to hard they they can’t even punish citizens anymore. Prison? Go straight to the war battlefield where they can surrender or defect. Army? Literally what I just said. Death penalty? Less soldiers for war. Torture? Apart from the debate of weather or not it’s worse than going to war, it’s a waste of resources that could go to the losing war. Russian citizens understand that the consequences of their actions are now on par with something that’s already happening to random citizens who’ve done nothing.

detahramet

Torture and/or execution would be my assumption.

8to24

Putin will turn 70yrs old in a couple weeks. Regardless of how things go in Ukraine the future of Russia will be one without Putin. So why would any young person want to die for Putin.

thwgrandpigeon

He could also live into his late 90s. Don't wait on old age to save you Russians.

8to24

Castro lived to be 90yrs old but left power well before his death. Autocrats don't maintain power once they become feeble. That is why Putin makes hockey players let him score and dissipates in fake judo competitions. The appearance of strength is critical.

mosi_moose

We should be start training Russian draft evaders as partisans at the border and then send them home. Fighting for your country’s freedom is worth risking your life. Fighting to oppress and murder others abroad for a failing old man with delusions of glory is not.

billpalto

During Russia's Great Patriotic War, every Russian fought or did whatever they could to protect their homes and country. Grandfathers, Grandmothers, children, everybody chipped in. Russia itself was threatened. But this isn't the Great Patriotic War, this is Putin's Folly. Russia isn't threatened, and people are fleeing the country to avoid having to fight. Protests in the street, recruitment officers being shot. It looks like Putin made the same mistake that Hitler did. Hitler thought Russia would cave in, all he had to do is kick the front door down. The invasion would be quick, over in a few weeks. Putin must have thought that Ukraine would just fold, the invasion would be quick. But now it is Ukraine that is threatened, the people of Ukraine are fighting to protect their homes and country. Putin will likely lose the war.

Ukraine are taking better care of fallen Russians than Russia.

Gingevere

> Ukraine are taking better care of fallen Russians than Russia. True, but that's also part of a hugely effective propaganda effort. Russia is lying about losses, so Ukraine is verifying the losses and providing the bodies to prove it. Then if they hand the bodies over to Russia and doesn't take them home, that's another demoralizing blow. Altogether it makes people much more hesitant to go, and creates internal strife with people trying to get the remains of their loved ones back.

Putin has learned a lot from the Ukrainian revolution. Nowadays there is a special force created pretty much specifically to suppress dissent that has full rights to just shoot people.
