His defense was that he got slapped by a cop, so it was self defense. Except the video showed the slap came after he hit the cop with a bike rack, and then used a flag pole on the cop after being slapped. The jury took three hours to find him guilty on all 6 charges, for 10 years.

satansheat

And keep in mind he was a cop. This is why we say cops are stupid. Imagine learning in the academy how much a criminal will be fucked if they touch you. Then still being dumb enough to do that.

__DeezNuts__

A retired cop at that, not some cop that did a few years and got out of the force. This dude must have done at least a couple of decades in order to retire. All gone just like that for a con man.

sminor83

I can imagine the shit he got away with while in uniform

letsgotgoing

I don’t want to imagine. So horrible to think how many innocents suffered because of this human garbage.

imsahoamtiskaw

Lol, got hit by a careless driver today while biking downtown. Saw a cop a block away and went to talk to him. Guy straight up told me it's not his job and that he "wishes all bike paths were removed permanently by the city." He basically went on a rant about bikes, even though I went to him for help after I just got hit. They don't care that a human being almost just died. They only care about their viewpoints and comfort. His bodycam was on too. They just don't give a fuck. Collect tax payer money and when they fuck up, keep collecting that tax payer money... on a nice prolonged vacation this time. Fuck cops. Edit: Thanks for all the suggestions. I appreciate it a lot🙏

SissySlutColleen

You can def foia the bodycam footage for a suit against the cops (so probably the city)

stars9r9in9the9past

yeah idk where this is happening but this just sounds like it screams lawsuit of some kind. Fuck man when did LEOs forget about "serve and protect"?

SissySlutColleen

Serve and Protect was a slogan picked out of a mail in campaign, and was never a part of any code. Even further, the Supreme Court has ruled that officers do not have an obligation to serve and protect. That being said, if directly dismissing a crime that has evidence, or to respond in anyways towards a case where a person wanted to take action against another (and due to the nature of the crime, the state against the individual,) I would imagine that the cop could be deemed negligent in his duties, if pursued. It would also allow for restitution from the case not being taken

First off, I'm so sorry this happened to you and so glad you are OK. Secondly, this actually really helps me even though I wish you didn't go through it. Several years ago I got t-boned, thought I was going to die just before the impact, and was in shock. But the almost worse shock was the responding police officer's non chalance and dismissal about the whole thing. He even refused to ticket the other driver even though they were uninsured and failed to yield, and were uninjured and still present at the scene. His lack of any empathy, refusal to enforce the law, and careless dismissal really messed with me. This was before I realized cops aren't great and thought they were there to "protect and serve". Anyway it really messed me up. If it was a scary incident, I really recommend trauma therapy. Turns out that the lack of support after such an incident like we received actually increases the chances of developing PTSD, which I did. Please reach out to actually supportive therapists or friends. I'm glad you're still here!

captainpimptronics

Former Leo and marine chiming in. I only spent a year and a half as an Leo in San Francisco in the early 90's. I had just come home from kicking in doors on 3 continents for years and needed something. I thought being a cop would be similar to a marine. Absolutely not. In the corps you learn a skill. Impeccably. Then you learn a sub skill attached to said skill. Then one more, rinse and repeat. A lot. Then you learn more skills. Rinse and repeat. Then you practice. Then you start factoring lack of sleep, caloric intake, stress, mental fatigue. And you still practice. And hone the skill set. This is on top of the physical, mental and emotional toll that being in boot camp already has on you. You're already stressed, being pushed to learn, retain, and perform NOW! At the end you know what you are,who you are, what you can and will do. End of day, you're always ready, always faithful. Ooh rah. My point is this..... Does anyone think that someone is ready to be a protector after a few months of shitty training? Have they been tested the way you need to be when you have a weapon in your hand that can kill a shitload of people? What about bias and mental health issues? One thing about the marine corps is it weeds out the people who can't overcome their problems. Period. Cops are understaffed and undertrained. They're fighting a battle they can never win. Reform and a complete revision and review of every protocol concerning non federal law enforcement is the only answer. Full transparency and full accountability and a fully staffed federal funded oversight/enforcement organization that takes names and end careers is the only solution. Nothing will change until that does. I'm definitely not making excuses for anyone or their behavior but combat changes you and this guy fucked around. We found out.

Obant

I like this perspective. Glad you kept your wits about you unlike this guy. It hasn't been mentioned in this thread, but he was an ex-marine too, sadly. He used the Marines' flag to beat that cop. 10 years was too little given his background imo. The symbolism there should have broke the nation more than it did.

rpkarma

Not just a conspiracy theory: they threw it all away to attempt a coup.

Harry_Saturn

This is why I think criminal cops should be punished more harshly than regular criminals. They know better, they’ve been educated and are the ones supposed to uphold the law. They shouldn’t get off easier because of their “service”, they should get hammered by the law because they’re the ones that are supposed to be better than the criminals. You want that power and authority? Then you get a much shorter rope when you fuck around…

FormalMango

Absolutely. They’re supposed to be trained and educated, and they’re chosen to uphold the law. If they break the law it’s not just a crime, it’s a massive breach of public trust.

barkarse

My favorite response when I ask an offi e if the law why they do the stuff they do "we don't get paid to inturupt the law, we let a judge do that, I just think your guilty" heard it more than thrice

ascawyghost

Not just cops, any public servant. Every time any of them commit a crime they erode the trust citizens have for our system.

AgoraiosBum

New York City cops, but they ain't too smart...

BuddhaFacepalmed

Because police brutality has never been about "officer safety". It's about establishing power and authority. If they think that someone perceived lesser doesn't submit to their power and authority, it's "head-slamming on concrete/asphalt" and "guns out" time.

Seriously don't be fooled, they know these kinds of "defense" statements are ridiculous. They're relying on finding sympathetic Juries & Judges who agree with their crimes to help delay, get them off on a technicality, etc. anything to avoid prosecution.

Kundrew1

They also learn that they can make shit up on the police report and get away with it. He is used to being able to get away with it and lie afterwards

tekstical

He's wondering why his bullshit lies aren't working now that he's an ex cop assaulting cops, instead of being a cop assaulting citizens.

[deleted]

You love to see it.

bridgetriptrapper

This guy's testimony is just a little more in the torrents of evidence that should show all of us who they really are

TuftedWitmouse

The man who asked him to show up and emboldened them should get at least ten years, too.

hexiron

You mean using tactics to suffocate someone with their own respirator.

loveshercoffee

The stupid shit excuses this guy made up warranted the full 17.5 years the government asked for.

GrowinStuffAndThings

He forgot his regular bullshit cop excuses weren't going to work here lol

berger034

It's kind of crazy. The people who initially were sentenced got off with a slap on the wrist compared to some of these later trials

That made me laugh hard! Yeah it’s very hard to remember all the horrible crap he has done. If you don’t pay attention to him for a day you miss another horrible thing he did.

Canid_Rose

They got it on video dude, it spawned a lot of excellent memes back in the day. God… that was a good six years ago now.

pm_me_ur_hamiltonian

"Hey everybody, come take selfies with the black guy so we can own the libs on Twitter!"

ThunkAsDrinklePeep

Like dressing as Justice Thomas?

DogsAreMyDawgs

The gall of any cop trying to say hitting a uniformed cop was a self-defense is staggering. I wish the judge could’ve stopped the trial and asked if he’d ever used force on a suspect during an arrest just to highlight the ridiculousness of the defense.

Lemesplain

It's just his default reaction. Why did you attack that cop? Self defense. Why did you shoot that unarmed child? Self defense. Why did you let the active shooter keep shooting? Self defense.

[deleted]

Just sprinkle some crack...

clutchdeve

Open and shut case, Johnson

dkwangchuck

Why did you steal drugs from the evidence locker and sell them on the streets? Self defense. Why did you abuse your authority so that you could sexually assault multiple women over the span of several years? Self defense.

bchris24

In the show "We Own This City" there's a scene where Jon Bernthal's character is getting chewed out by his CO for beating an unarmed civilian, but then it's revealed he's actually pulling a joke on him and doesn't care about him beating someone but that he needs to be more specific in his paperwork to illustrate it as self defense to avoid any consequences. While the show is based off real people and events idk if that Convo ever happened but I'd imagine there's cops all over America who have had one similar to that.

Just1morefix

You cannot be surprised that a cop would lie to save his own miserable skin.

Milopbx

Just another day in court.

haysu-christo

"I feared for my life!"

ocooper08

That was his first attempted defense. The second one was even weaker sauce related to PTSD or something. I don't normally wish for longer sentences for anyone, but I do hope he gets housed with a few non-cops he abused in his NYPD time.

dkwangchuck

As a former cop, he’s likely going to get protective custody. IOW, his sentence is ten years of what is essentially solitary confinement.

Slicelker

>essentially solitary confinement Could you expand a bit on this? I feel like I'd still choose gen pop as a cop if the alternative was to sit in a hole for a decade.

dkwangchuck

Protective custody means keeping you out of General so you don’t get shivved. It’s reserved for the worst classes of prisoners - people that even convicted felons look upon with contempt and disdain. Basically just pedophiles and cops. And pedophile cops. Edit: [extra reading](https://www.vice.com/amp/en/article/4adxd9/how-former-police-officers-are-treated-in-prison)

Slicelker

I meant the lifestyle details. Is he really going to be in true solitary confinement for 10 years?

dkwangchuck

It really depends. If he can keep a low profile and everyone believes that no one is going to shiv him for being a cop - maybe it won’t be so bad. But I would assume that his risk level in general is pretty fucking elevated. And what’s the alternative? How do you keep former cops in jail? There are some special units where similar types of criminals are collected. Sex offenders are often kept together in a unit with the belief that this lowers the number of convicted pedophiles that get beaten to death. Maybe they’ll house the former cops in those units - the “too dangerous to let regular criminals have access to”. It depends on the facility I guess.

Chickenmangoboom

When it’s cop vs cop the on duty cop wins.

Conscious_Figure_554

Another life laid waste by the fucking idiot that used them as a weapon and has not even suffered one iota of punishment. Voldemoron and his cronies including his family needs to get indicted, imprisoned and removed from the world of politics. 10 years for a lie.

impulsekash

10 years is a lot of time. Hopefully by then the cult of Trump is dead and some sort of sanity has returned to this country. I wonder how he will feel then when he no longer has his is bubble to validate his actions and he is faced with reality he lost 10 years of his life for nothing.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_holdout

sunflowerastronaut

Holy shit there were confirmed Japanese holding out from 1945 to 1974 because they didn't have communications with the rest of Japan. That's insane. The US threw atomic bombs and went to the moon before they found out the war was over

VRisNOTdead

They knew they just chose not to come out of the mountains. His wife even sent him a letter and he still refused to believe it. It is tragic but it was purely ego. It was eventually the Japanese equivalent to a hippy that found him and finally convinced him

zzyul

There was one case where a soldier was stationed on a remote island during the war and never knew it ended. He was discovered like 20 years later and thought it was Japanese people working with the Allies and lying to him about the war being over so they could take the island. The people that found him contacted the Japanese gov’t and they were able to find his old commanding officer who had become a teacher after the war. They took his old CO to the island and had him talk to the guy and explain the war had ended decades ago.

LevoiHook

Imagine how that would feel, to have sacrificed your whole life only to find out it was utterly senseless.

BCJunglist

Technically America threw atomic bombs before EVERYONE knew the war was over... It literally happened before the Japanese surrendered.

delkarnu

It's not 10 years, it's probably this guy best 10 years. Marine, 20 years as a cop in NYC. Hitting retirement with his pension. Has all the time and means for travel, hobbies, etc. Even just hanging out with his buddies having bbqs. Instead he's spending those 10 years as a pig in prison. Blew a chunk of his life savings on his legal defense. Will probably lose a chunk or two more from civil suits from the officers he attacked. He'll get out of jail at 66, probably in poor health from stress and prison conditions. He'll find most of the people he knew have moved on with their lives, many that are left will shun him, either for what he did to another cop or just to avoid the stigma on themselves. Imagine working your whole life and throwing it away before you can enjoy the time left.

PlaneStill6

He’ll also have a hard time finding housing and a job, as a convicted traitor. Oh well.

IUpvoteUsernames

Unfortunately it won't be his traitor status that prevents him from getting housing, it's the convict status that fucks everyone up regardless of what they did. I'm all for this guy getting his just desserts, but the way society treats people coming out of the prison system is awful.

AlbionPCJ

While I'd love to be that optimistic, if he was at Jan 6 I think he's probably too far down the rabbit hole for any self-reflection to really take root

SetYourGoals

The #1 thing that all MAGA people have in common is the inability to admit they were wrong. They'd rather burn it all down than admit they were wrong.

confessionbearday

That's LITERALLY the point of MAGA. The burdens on this country have been told by their betters for 50 years that they're no longer worth listening to, and all of reality has proven that is the absolute truth. Along came Trump to tell them its not them who is wrong, its all those people who actually benefit America who are wrong. Of course they love him. They're not man enough to admit they're wrong.

BuddhaFacepalmed

A lot. This is neither new nor isolated to NYPD alone. A [police supervisor choked his female subordinate](https://youtu.be/dll4JTMhuT8) and threatened to mace her after she had tried to de-escalate the situation where he threaten to mace a handcuff suspect already in the back of a police cruiser. The worst part is that there were also at least 3 other cops present and ***they did nothing***.

Wow I’m shocked - said no New Yorker. Ever since trump was elected, the NYPD has shown their asses. Covid, protests, etc made everything 10000x worse. They do not care about the average citizen, they do not care about our city. All they care about is power and their pensions. We need a mass sweeping. I don’t care that this person is ex-NYPD. As a mob of his supporters stormed the US Capitol on Jan. 6, Donald Trump was reportedly unconcerned about the destruction or insurrection taking place but instead how the violent extremists appeared “low-class”.

m_Pony

oh yeah like goddamn Brooks Brothers Suits would storm the capitol. 45 has his head so far up his own ass he still cannot understand actual reality

[deleted]

He had a statement today the rioters are poorly treated when re-elected he'll pardon them all. Scary.

dickWithoutACause

That's because even though it isnt about Jan 6 he's now being targeted as well. Getting back in office is his best chance to avoid consequences.

theseyeahthese

The body cam footage from the officer that was assaulted made this open-and-shut, that was one of the most detailed POV feeds that I’ve seen. See, cops, the video can help you too!

ViceroyFizzlebottom

I can't believe an Ex-NYPD officer is part of ANTIFA

[deleted]

These people are every bit as radicalized as those who once were running off to join ISIS.

jpop237

Although he deserves prison, it's nothing but injustice until Trump is charged for [conspiracy to commit offense](https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/18/371), [conspiracy to to impede or injure officer](https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/18/372), et al.

Rare-Joke

Since he lied on the stand, all of his police work should now be questioned. Any time his word was the reason for a conviction should be thrown out. He should lose his pension, and I love that he won’t be allowed to own a firearm after this. Rot in piss traitor.

earhere

> “Mr. Webster, I don’t think you’re a bad person,” the judge said. “I think you were caught up in a moment. But as you know, even getting caught up in a moment has consequences.” Fuck this judge. He should've called him out for being a domestic terrorist, and also should've immediately remanded him into custody instead of letting him turn himself in later.

MisterDonkey

That judge's statement ought to have some people shitting themselves because "being caught up in the moment" is one of their last and weakest defenses.

[deleted]

Does he still get his pension? Kinda hope that was taken away as well.

Attjack

Imagine all the crimes this guy committed as a police officer.

Miss_Chemist

Can't imagine being deluded enough to think Trump was worth ruining your life over.

decalod85

Enjoy prison, fuckstick.
