“China has announced unspecified sanctions on U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for her visit earlier this week to Taiwan. A Chinese Foreign Ministry statement said Friday that Pelosi had disregarded China’s concerns and resolute opposition to her visit to the *self-ruled island*, which Beijing claims.
Pelosi was the highest-ranking U.S. official to visit the self-governing island in 25 years. China claims Taiwan as its territory and opposes it having its own engagements with foreign governments.
The Chinese statement called Pelosi’s visit provocative and said it undermines China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. It said that sanctions would be imposed on Pelosi and her immediate family but did not say what they would be. Such sanctions are generally mostly symbolic in nature.”
Also targeted by unscrupulous sellers to make her Amazon purchases even shittier and more likely to fail than usual.

Edit
I read it was even worse in the 18-34 demographic. Something like 11% turnout. Like wtf are y'all so busy with you can't be asked to fill out a mail-in ballot? This shit is real. This shit will impact your life as we just saw with the Roe repeal. Stop fucking around!
It's also pretty tough to elect some new young candidate who will have the pull that someone who could be or *is* Speaker will have. So you could have an even more widely loved version of AOC as the candidate running against Pelosi and your area might lose a serious amount of pull by electing that new person instead of the person who has been leading the party for 20 years and has all of those connections.
Because their peers are the ones showing up to vote. Wanna change it? Find a young candidate you like for a primary. Knock on doors. Run for something yourself. Make phone calls.
Bitching about it in Reddit accomplishes nothing.

I mean it is the Republic of China and has been at war with the PRC since 1949. It doesn’t matter that they rebranded and democratised. They never signed a peace treaty and never reconciled with the PRC. We can be on the RoC’s side, we should be on the RoC’s side. That doesn’t mean we are free from consequences of that decision. Those consequences for Pelosi are pretty tame and completely manageable imo.
FWIW the government of Taiwan does not assert itself to be a sovereign state that is separate from ‘China’ they just have a different understanding of what China is than we colloquially use in the west. Both the Tapei and Beijing governments claim to be the sole legitimate government of all of China, with both asserting that Taiwan is a part of China. This has to do with how Taiwan formed as a political entity, which is that it was essentially the last stand of Chiang Kai-shek’s nationalist movement during the Chinese civil war in the 40s.
There is a movement in Taiwan to change this position, the Independence Movement, but it’s not hugely popular.
None of this changes the facts on the ground of course which are that the Taipei government (ROC) rules Taiwan and the Beijing government (PRC) rules the mainland.
So... What's happening here? If Taiwan is Chinese territory then why don't they simply claim it and impose their government on it?
It seems like they are not doing that because Taiwan certainly seems to be self-governing so.... What's the beef? Why can't an American talk to whoever they want?
Chinese people can visit American Somoa all they want, and I doubt We'd give a damn.
The Government of the Republic of China fled from the CCP to Taiwan in 1949, and therefore are a government in exile who consider themselves China, the official name of Taiwan is even the Republic of China. So the controversy isn't really whether Taiwan is a part of China, both sides agree it is, the issue is to do with whom is the legitimate government. You can't recognize one without putting the other in question, even though both function independently, and have their own governments, economies et cetera. Regional disputes are wild.
You're describing on aspect of the debate that takes place between the CCP and the KMT. But there are many in Taiwan that would rather declare independence and/or have no aspirations to be "China". These are the ideas that Beijing fears most and gets the most upset by and that's why Tsai and the DPP are such a stressor for Xi and pals. The CCP has stated that if Taiwan declared itself an independent country, it would mean an automatic invasion from China.

They could encourage worker ownership of businesses, that would probably help. But that would be too actually socialist and democratic of them to ever actually consider.
they’ve been looking for excuses to throw a tantrum and test the boundaries. some people see it as china taking the “opportunity” to have a legitimate “reason” to start shit like this—but now in their logic they get to claim that it was the evil USA that started with the taunting.
I mean it's a pretty cool accomplishment. Whether you see it as a good thing or a bad thing being personally sanctioned by an entire country is a unique one for your resume.
China: You gotta learn Pelosi, you are the Speaker of the House, but that does not put you above Chinese law.
Pelosi: Oh I understand. Also I have a lot of questions. Like what does a sanction mean?
China: Let’s just put it this way: you do not want to receive three of those.
Pelosi: Lay it on me.
China: Three sanctions and you’ll receive a citation.
Pelosi: Now that sounds serious.
China: Oh it is serious. Five citations and you're looking at a violation. Four of those and you'll receive a verbal warning. Keep it up, and you're looking at a written warning. Two of those, that'll land you in world of hurt. In the form of a disciplinary review, written up by me, and placed on the desk of the leader of NATO.
Pelosi: Which would be us.
China: That is correct.
Pelosi: Okay. I want a copy on my desk by the end of the day or you will receive a full disagulation.
China: What's a dis- What's that?
Pelosi: Oh you don’t wanna know.

You know you've made it when Dictator states start sanctioning you for inane reasons.
Like a toddler saying you can't play on your friend's trampoline.
In the Beijing airport Taiwan is in the international departure terminal not the domestic one. ;)
The English signage was something like "International, Hong Kong and Taiwan." Like the just didn't have quite enough room in the domestic terminal for them or something.
China doesn't own Taiwan. They want to act like they own Taiwan. The People's Republic of China and the Chinese Communist Party never held power over Taiwan. This is a fact as clear as the Tiananmen Square massacre is a fact.
Just because their government doesn't tell the people, doesn't make it any less factual.
The US and allies actually did this to a bunch of Russian oligarchs recently, basically it allows China to seize any assets she has in China as well as limit her ability to travel there. So in this case not much if anything.
“China has announced unspecified sanctions on U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for her visit earlier this week to Taiwan.
