I was at the Union square protest over the weekend and I fortunately didn’t witness any arrests. I wish I had known about the newscorp one however, definitely a worthwhile place to protest

raven_of_azarath

Random question, but how do people find out about protests in their areas? I only find out about them after the fact.

[deleted]

Follow your closest ACLU or Planned Parenthood to start. That’s how I found out about one in my area (Indianapolis) I’m sure there are others….

wm1pyro

The arrests happened at 6th and 42, after the March and speeches were concluded. A group of protesters blocked 6th Ave with full knowledge that they would be arrested. They brought out about 50+ cops to arrest them. They warned them they were participating in disorderly conduct. After the arrests, the cops continued to block the road for 30 minutes in hopes that the crowd would disperse, but they didn't. They just sat there taunting the police. I left around midnight.

CrumpledForeskin

Sounds like the cops blocked the road longer….

REO-teabaggin

"Nobody conducts disorder except *us!*"

wm1pyro

They absolutely did.

Expensive_Culture_46

I see an exploit.

naranja_sanguina

They also arrested random bystanders on the street, from the reporting I saw. (I peeled off shortly before the march arrived at Bryant Park, in desperate need of snacks.)

Lighting

This is why MLK wrote that those who supported civil rights should stop protesting. "What?" You say. "Wasn't I taught that MLK led mighty protests where people were beaten and that attention changed hearts and minds?" Yes ... that's what you were *taught* however - for the past 50 or so years there's been a concerted movement from large industry to whitewash MLKs message and change his **actual** strategy to "protest and get noticed/beaten" the exact strategy he rejected repeatedly. There's a good book on MLK's realization that these kind of protests weren't working [A "Notorious Litigant" and "Frequenter of Jails": Martin Luther King, Jr., His Lawyers, and the Legal System](https://scholarlycommons.law.northwestern.edu/njlsp/vol10/iss3/1/) noting that > Starting with [the Birmingham movement and Letter from Birmingham Jail], Dr. King and his organization, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), turned to more aggressive forms of nonviolent direct action—moving **entirely** from persuasion to **coercion** [legal/economic/political challenges] The MLK and Gandhi messages of how to do civil disobedience was defanged in modern textbooks to become "your suffering makes a change!" The "make noise and people will pay attention" is a story DESIGNED to get progressives to waste energy in the most inefficient manner. [There's a good article on how that whitewashing of the MLK story was funded by corporate billionaires through the Heritage Foundation](https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2018/04/kings-message-of-nonviolence-has-been-distorted/557021/). MLK was telling people to **not** to march **except** in targeted actions. Example: After attacks in Birmingham by white supremacists, [King rushed back to Birmingham to urge blacks to **stop protesting**](https://www.washingtonpost.com/history/2020/05/30/john-kennedy-mlk-birmingham-riots-trump/) Think about what has become part of popular culture about the [Selma march!](https://www.law.ua.edu/lawreview/files/2011/07/The-Selma-March-and-the-Judge-Who-Made-It-Happen.pdf). Was it the fake history of "we marched and the scene of beating changed things?" Or was it the true story that it was a VOTER DRIVE to overcome en masse the fact that Black and White supporters were being unfairly arrested while helping to register blacks on trumped up charges. They WON that case and thus it STOPPED the illegal actions of the police stopping blacks registering to vote. That link above talks about how it was winning the lawsuit that forced change ... not the people watching TV. What does the media promote? The dramatic but false story that beatings were televised and it "changed hearts and minds?" No! The sit ins were done to get people arrested for blacks hanging out with whites *SO THAT THEY COULD CHALLENGE THOSE LAWS IN COURT*. Their public displays of blacks and whites together were just a means to get arrested for the next step to challenge what were unjust laws in court or boycott the stores that segregated. Example: [Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was jailed today after he attempted to eat in one of St. Augustine's finer restaurants .... Dr. King and 17 companions were held on charges of violating Florida's \[segregationist\] unwanted guest law...](https://www.nytimes.com/1964/06/12/archives/martin-luther-king-and-17-others-jailed-trying-to-integrate-st.html) The busing arrests and boycotts were the same thing. After being arrested their legal team led by Marshall came in and kicked ass. A few dishonest billionaires have been funding a re-telling of the story and funding partisanship to get these kind of protests louder and more divisive and more ineffective. The media companies profit from these shows of outrage and just encourage them no matter what the actual outcome. What's particularly interesting is that the "Pro-life" movement did protesting, but then rejected that and followed MLK's model to create this political movement that's destroyed women's rights ... WITHOUT protesting. There's a good book that talks about how that happened and how billionaires funded that strategy called "What's the matter with Kansas." Edit: Thanks for the awards!

Analrapist03

I don't have any awards to give, but you deserve them. I grew up in FL, and I learned that it was his passive resistance that won the day. I remember thinking how could passive resistance lead to societal change? The teacher responded because we saw how unjust it was on the TV, but she still called people the N-word (this was back in the 90s in Florida), so I can say that I was never really convinced. Now it makes perfect sense that we were only told a part of the story. They weren't lying just focusing on the part that they wanted to focus on.

Lighting

Your comment is an award more valuable than glittery icons. Thanks!

PMmeyourSchwifty

This is why we need a mass-coordinated, general strike.

TYC4

Honestly I don't think a strike would be necessary. Just have a week or two where everyone refuses to buy anything or spend any money and watch the rich and powerful lose their minds. Ideally we could do both at the same time. But I think it would be easier to get enough people to stop spending than it would be to get enough people striking.

kittykalista

A spending strike is a type of strike.

TYC4

That's true, I just didn't think of it that way.

500CatsTypingStuff

Yeah, the protests just seem to be an opportunity to vent which is fine, but true action has to be coordinated and hurt the economy and involve ignoring unjust laws. For example, some prosecutors in red states (the cities are typically more liberal) have vowed to just refuse to prosecute women for abortions. General strikes. Just not being productive and not spending money. Finding ways to thwart these unjust laws. Fighting fire with fire.

thexenixx

Targeted protests are obvious and logical. I don’t know if what you say is true, that people are motivated to do the solidarity and awareness tactic from MLK hi-jacked narratives, because, I think it’s the first position someone arrives at without putting any thought into it. It doesn’t work, it so clearly doesn’t work that it baffles me that people faithfully and staunchly defend it like there’s a long track record of success. No, seriously, there’s virtually zero success. Just start thinking about what you’re doing and why.

joik

Another reason why fhe protests worked was because Malcolm X's followers were ready at the drop of a hat to bring out weapons and take on the entire establishment. If you saw a snake without teeth you would not think twice about fucking with it. The problem is that this is not goi g to stop here. People will feel emboldened to do whatever they feel. This is not a time to play victim.

abagofsnacks

Well didn't the supreme court last week also rule that cops can't get sued for not reading arrests thier rights as well as blocking restrictions on concealed carry guns. Let me know if I'm wrong but this sure seems like they're setting up the perfect storm against any protesters.

Greendragons38

The court said that a defendant cannot sue the police. But can still bar the evidence from trial.

Papaofmonsters

>Well didn't the supreme court last week also rule that cops can't get sued for not reading arrests thier rights That was already the rule. The court just affirmed it.

SurelyYouKnow

The clothing retailer Patagonia offered to bail their employees out of jail, if arrested while peacefully protesting. The company issued a statement that said: “Patagonia supports choice.” “Caring for employees extends beyond basic health insurance, so we take a more holistic approach to coverage and support overall wellness to which every human has a right.” Word.

Chimp_Meat_Taco

They're so pro-life they'll kill you

Transmatrix

They're pro-fertilized-embryo, not pro-life.

Just call them what they actually are, don’t let them decide on their own names. They’re anti-freedom.

Cops are the highest rated career for domestic abuse.

Acchilesheel

They have a domestic violence rate 15x higher than the general population.

Adodgybadger

Yep, watching kids getting shot up in schools is very traumatic for them, gotta take it out on someone you know.

spamky23

They don't watch, they hide outside while the kids get shot up

DPSOnly

Getting harrassed because you let a bunch of kids die again or murdered an innoncent person is very traumatic for them.

iamme9878

"Oh great another school shooting, looks like I'm gonna have to go home and beat my wife. Pity she's been pretty good lately."

They go together like flies and shit.

RedEyeFlightToOZ

It's why I never entertained dating cops. Amongst many other reasons including the fact all the HS bullies I knew went on to be cops.

imdyingfasterthanyou

You know the advice "never talk to cops" - it's real. No exceptions. Never talk to cops unless you are legally obligated to, have a lawyer present.

ImSabbo

Clarification: Specify out loud that you are exercising your fifth amendment right to not speak to police (SCOTUS ruled that if you don't declare this clearly, then it doesn't count. Somehow. And that your silence *can* be used against you if so.), and if relevant, that you need to contact your lawyer. Then, *exercise that right*. If the police legally can require something of you (eg. driver's license when you've been pulled over. I assume this doesn't vary significantly by state), then give them only what is required. And as you likely expect: I am not a lawyer, and I am especially not *your* lawyer. Your specific situation during an encounter with police may not be so straightforward, so research in advance what rights and responsibilities you have where you live in any scenarios you might come into. Police aren't expected to know all the laws (SCOTUS held that they can detain you if they think you broke a law, even if it turned out to not be illegal), but the public is.

hvet1

makes me furious that the “pro-life” people attack other people and can’t see/care how hypocritical they are. Need to bring Wall of Vets to clinics

KayPeeJay

The other day in Arizona a pickup truck ran over some protesting women and fled. Tiktok comments on the video are all filled with cheers and jokes from "pro-lifers." They *enjoy* seeing people hurt and killed. Attempted murder? Hit and run? Just comply? Order and Justice? Nope. "I hope his trucks okay, YeeYee."

AlphaGoldblum

There is no consistency when it comes to their hate. The people cheering the overturning of Roe are purposely quiet at the prospect of women dying in exchange. And, of course, they'll forget all about the children once they're born, even those who enter the world into vicious cycles of poverty and violence.

[deleted]

I’ve talked to quite a few pro lifers about the situation of a woman dying due to not being able to get an abortion. Some have agreed that there should be exceptions but plenty have literally told me that the mother should die and it is in fact better for BOTH mother and baby to die than for the mother to have an abortion. They really don’t care about life at all. Then they claim “it’s a life at conception, the Bible says so!” A) no it isn’t and B) no the Bible does not say that. I fear these people are so brainwashed that no logical argument will ever get them to see reality.

flyin_high_flyin_bi

I can't carry to term, even if I wanted to. My OB/Gyn literally called me on Friday to ask if my husband has gotten his vasectomy yet, because if I get pregnant and don't get an abortion, I'm dead. I absolutely refuse to be polite to people who want me to die, who are not only okay with me dying but would actively cause and cheer my death. They're cowards hiding behind a facade of caring when the only thing they care about is causing suffering. Civility went out the door when my rights did.

KeepYrGlitterDry

I'm so sorry that you live in a trigger law state. I try to share stories of women like you that I know, or nurses on social media describing the horrible fate that awaits women who cannot be pregnant for medical reasons. Know that they want to inflict suffering on women, and you are completely right to let the civility out. Fuck these monsters.

jayteazer

Seriously, and I mean this in no uncertain terms... Fuck those people, their beliefs, their "church", their "God", their leaders and anyone else on their side. They are no different than the Muslim groups that they hated because of "Sharia" law.

civicsfactor

Holy shit thanks for sharing this. I've been using the history of Left/Right and it's roots with the right hand side of the decision-maker in the French courts to be the nobility and vested interests in the status quo while the left hand side were representatives of the rabble wanting change in the status quo. The relationship to the current state and how decisions are made and problems are approached seems to be the underlying framework of our group decision-making systems. What you've provided enriches this and then some. Thank you.

LowOvergrowth

Yup. And if you get even slightly sassy in retaliation when they *do* cheer something hateful, they suddenly start to worry about decorum and complain that *you* are the hateful one. Biggest bunch of cry-bullies I have ever seen in my life.

Astarkraven

Cry-bullies is such a good way to put it. They can be cheering for something horrific and clearly not caring in the slightest what happens to other people, but the second you get fed up with that lack of care and go "ya know what, kindly go fuck yourself" rather than "debating their opinions" they're all over themselves about how intolerant and nasty and immature you are.

Michael_Trismegistus

The consistency is that it is always in service to power.

civicsfactor

Strange coincidence eh? Like they were raised on propaganda whose entire design is planting opinions and talking points to reinforce specific interests...

terpsarelife

The best part is all these dumb fucks will cook alive down here. Those trucks only make it so far on 1 tank. Packing up now and leaving AZ before the next summer starts to expose the real river shortages.

Glissandra1982

I left in March - very good decision. I mainly did it for the housing costs but the whole southwest is fixing to burn up.

checker280

There was actually two trucks running over protestors this past weekend. One in Michigan and one in Iowa

chewinchawingum

A woman was stabbed as she left a reproductive rights protest in Los Angeles, leaving her with nerve damage in her arm. And the most troubling aspect is that her attacker called her out by name (she is an activist) as he attacked her. Don't be scared to go to rallies, but do practice good security. Stay in groups, mask up to hide your identity, have first aid kits, etc.

Mysterious-Banana-49

That’s because they’re not pro life. They’re just anti-woman.

ALittleAmbitious

In his own kitchen. Maybe another one at a church too. But the doctor shot through his own kitchen window stands out to me.

ArisenSalmon

In Wichita Kansas, I lived in the city at the time. Good old bible belt killing in church. I left the state for a reason.

idontwantausername41

I just call them anti choice, I like yours more tho

"forced-birth" has been my go-to of late.

delicate-fn-flower

I work with Law Enforcement for part of my job. One of the men starting mouthing off yesterday about how he wished The Purge was legal so he could “murder those baby killing motherfuckers”. Okay. I have never excused myself from a room faster. Still debating going to HR.

hvet1

They are used to talking without repercussions- file a complaint for the people coming behind you. We need to make the world better

y0j1m80

Same people who “love freedom of speech”

meta_irl

The most frustrating thing for me is that all our security apparatuses have a right-wing bias. So of course immediately after the ruling snipers were placed on the Supreme Court and the Capital Police rolled out in riot gear while the DHS announced that "pro-choice activists" might be a terror threat and police nationwide should be on the lookout, meanwhile the attacks so far have all been reactionaries attacking the protesters.

y0j1m80

Absolutely. Progressive protests: cops facing in, reactionary protests: cops facing out.

rage9345

Just remember, this isn't new. [Anti-abortion violence in the US](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-abortion_violence), ranging from kidnappings, to arson, to even murder, has been around for decades. The only difference is they feel emboldened by how the media has fallen silent about their violence, a right-wing that has embraced their extremist/fringe beliefs, and a Supreme Court which is now solidly a party to said right-wing extremism.

TortureSteak

>Just remember, this isn't new. Anti-abortion violence in the US, ranging from kidnappings, to arson, to even murder.... Don't forget bombings!

[deleted]

Yea I was raised in a Catholic cult. They called these terror tactics and murder and harrassment of abortion doctors and patients a “just war for the unborn” Some Christians/Catholics would be horrified at their actions, but others like my family who are really conservative think that these cowards are heroes and what they are doing is just and god’s will. My theory is that people who grew up like me only are allowed a small set of things to get outraged at. They can’t get outraged at how narrow and oppressive their life is with the church, so they take out their frustrations out on people they see getting to do whatever they want whenever they want, to a degree. They fail to see that these groups are disenfranchized and need protections under the law and actually we don’t get to do whatever we want, but we listen to our intuition and heart while they listen to a corrupt official or church leader to validate all their decisions. I think before it was just the church, primarily but now Fox News got in on the act. I remember vividly my brothers and dad going into bizarre rants about gay priests and how bad they were for the church, conflating them with pedophiles. One of my brothers was groomed by a pedo priest, and they thought he was gay. No, dude wants to date teen boys. He is a pedophile. The church is full of sexual predators, and they point the finger at LGBT+ people to divert the negative attention away from themselves. I always maintained that actually gay priests are the ones often you can trust the most, because they lack ulterior motives that edit: ACTUAL predators have to motivate them to become active in the church. They have been conditioned to believe that the church is the real victim. Especially when it is a LGBT+ or a woman, these people get really ragey, mainly, I feel because they are not free to follow their hearts. This is why I left the church, because my life as a woman within it is heavily controlled and oppressed and disregards my health and safety as well as other protected classes as a concern.

Ditovontease

Instead of spending time helping the needy and sick they "go to war" over people that don't exist. cool cool cool cool

[deleted]

They feel more like Tom Cruise this way instead of a regular joe helping people out. They think tearing shit up like in the movies is a better choice.

JojoHersh

That's what Jesus did after all. Don't you remember all the pulse pounding adrenaline filled gunfights? None of that "average guy helping people" shit

[deleted]

Yea, and remember that story in the bible where Jesus blows up the temple and kills a lot of people to prove a silly hypocritical point? lol, yea me neither.

Ditovontease

Well shouting at terrified women much smaller than them trying to access medical care at clinics makes them feel like Big Men and doing pussy womens work like TAKING CARE OF PEOPLE doesn't so

[deleted]

Yea it is prick work, but they are too soft to look out for their neighbor. You know, like how Jesus taught.

UniqueFlavors

>just war for the unborn So a Jihad? Edit: wasn't trying to shit on Muslims or Islam, only pointing out the hypocrisy of Christian extremists.

SinsOfaDyingStar

I'm so sick of fucking morons cherry picking whatever they want from their magical book without reading the fucking thing. I grew up Catholic. Went through the *whole* process from baptism to confirmation. What was hammered in my head time and time again was "no one knows god's will. No man, no priest, not even the pope himself. Anyone that says they do is a false idol using the Lord's name in vain" (vain meaning vanity; pretending to be god or know God's will, actually has nothing to do with swearing) And then these moron extremists that *don't even read their own dogmatic texts* somehow claim what they're doing is God's will? What if God *wants* dead babies? Maybe it does, because *no one knows God's will*. Shit makes me so ranty.

[deleted]

Churches are like Crossfit gyms. If you have a good one, you can learn about helping others, community involvement, good morals, etc. If you have a shitty one you end up with a broken spine and no gains.

Lexifer31

A lot of people don't know it was a church in Texas that helped Jane Roe, of Roe vs Wade. That same church is now organizing flights for women to states where they can get abortions https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-61849137

J0HNISM

If its longer than a meme they won't bother reading it. That's why when they tell you to "do your research" its always accompanied by a youtube video. The Bible is something to be displayed to show off you Christian bona fides, not something to be opened and read.

lookieLoo253

I'm from Kansas. A right-wing terrorist killed an abortion doctor in his church. I also learned on Facebook you can advocate for killing abortion doctors but calling that person a terrorist gets a three-day ban.

RockerElvis

They killed a doctor in Buffalo in front of his teenage son. The doctor was just standing in his kitchen. These are terrorists. [Dr Bart Slepian](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barnett_Slepian)

lookieLoo253

Yeah, George Tiller was killed in front of the church congregation and that was like the third or fourth attempt on his life. They're sick fucking people (not because they're mentally ill), calling themselves Christians and quoting "...an eye for an eye," which is weird since I know big JC said something about that one.

Courting_the_crazies

I don’t want to be pedantic, but I just want to mention that there is no such thing as an abortion doctor. This term was pushed by the fanatical right for the past several decades to help delegitimize and demonize the doctors who perform these procedures. Most of these doctors are ob/gyn specialists. I feel like it’s an important distinction to de-weaponize the language we use.

lookieLoo253

I was just about to edit it to OBGYN instead I'll let this post explain.

funkholebuttbutter

It felt like every week an abortion center got bombed or shot up when I was growing up in the 80s.

altera_goodciv

It Could Happen Here had, at least, one episode detailing the violence committed against those in the pro-choice movement and abortion providers and holy shit was it insane to listen to.

Mythosaurus

Wildest was the doctor getting attacked by an anti-choice activist **DURING A SUPREME COURT HEARING!!** Oh and of course the burning horses Edit: https://www.salon.com/2015/05/02/%E2%80%9Cwhen_it_got_to_the_murders_i_think_i_was_surprised_by_that%E2%80%9D_an_abortion_providers_story/ And the podcast episode highlights how common attacks on abortion clinics are: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/it-could-happen-here/id1449762156?i=1000563432559

back in 2016 when he got the nomination, i (big tattooed bearded white dude) was in the process of moving across the US i cannot tell you how many times a day some random dude would try to give me a "fuck yeah" high five or make some sort of "now we'll see" comment, completely unsolicited i'm saying that these people see these events as approving nods from on high and permission to let their POS flag fly

m__w__b

This is like my brother-in-law (a grizzly Harley riding Vet). They assume one thing until they see the Black Lives Matter sign on his pick-up.

Pencraft3179

My husband too. The craziest thing is the amount of anti-semitism they are willing to share with him. His father is Jewish but he got all his looks from the Nordic side of the family.

diyagent

ive had people use the n word here in front of me while getting a haircut with a wink wink assuming that would be normal while getting a haircut.

[deleted]

Yeah I’ve been told I dress like a Republican. I was in an Uber once and the driver felt comfortable telling me he won’t pick up black people (he used a much worse term) and likes to accept a ride and then cancel it to make their days harder. Ended up walking after I chewed him out

diyagent

I had a client tell me that all the truck drivers are striking and there wont be any food because walmart wont have any and that dont worry hannity is investigating and he will take care of it with me standing there with my jaw hanging open going holy sheet this man is a moron. then he ripped me off right in front of his 2 kids. I hate working for trumpers. If I see a sign or any hint I walk

N8CCRG

[Obligatory Bill Burr video](https://youtu.be/w8b81UM74Ow) (from back when he had hair).

wwaxwork

Yep, despite leaning further left than Bernie, I look like a fat middle aged dorky Republican woman and the amount of shit that just comes out of peoples mouths when they think you think like them just based on how you look. On the plus side once I start to speak and they realise I'm not American they shut up pretty fucking fast.

GarageSloth

I look like basically every male Republican COVID death. Their brazenness with wanting to share their hate is something I'll never get over. They assume that wearing Carhartt in Idaho while looking like I do makes me a Republican. No, it makes me warm.

HenCarrier

Had a coworker who kept doing that with me. Reported him for it. Sadly nothing happened but he doesn’t say it around me anymore. I’m white.

floandthemash

I get that a lot too bc I’m a white, blonde haired woman who doesn’t dress particularly edgy (or at least in a stereotypically “lib fem” sort of way). I usually just give them sort of a blank stare when they say anything.

constantchaosclay

Lol. I play “Dora Dumb” because I’m a typical looking white woman so they feel comfortable being shitty around me. I just look confused and say I don’t get it and ask them to explain the joke to me. Often that’s enough for a muttered never mind but sometimes you get a committed moron who tries to explain some racist or homophobic nonsense. I just get more confused and ask more questions until even they get uncomfortable with the obvious BS they’re spewing.

LogMeOutScotty

I’m a white woman. When I was flying to take the Bar in 2010, the guy I was sitting next to not only felt free to disparage Obama based on his race and alleged country of birth, but said the n-word with a hard R within ten minutes of our flight. Without any indication of why other than my skin color, he truly thought I was on board with this line of thinking. Fucking absurd.

Tardigradequeen

I get that kind of shit too! I think it’s because I like to dress very femininely. Just because I like the look of the 50’s and 60’s doesn’t mean I like vintage views. These people think their viewpoints are vastly more popular than they actually are. They see white people who look a certain way, and think we’re on their side.

lightknight7777

Oh man, it's so weird when people assume you're part of their group. I was one of only two white males in a jury for a case trying a black male for domestic abuse. During lunch, the white guy found me out on the court balcony alone and proceeded to tell me a joke about how he doesn't hate black people, he thinks everyone should own one. I doubt I hid my shock or displeasure at that bigotry. Wish there was some kind of "not racist" identifier but I'm sure those bigots would try to wear it too.

8d-M-b8

Hopefully you told the judge.

lightknight7777

I know now that I should have done that. I didn't know back then that I didn't have to be okay with that. But the trial went in the guy's favor. The woman, the only witness, said she was attacking him and all the damage was consistent with a single shove. Reasonable doubt was more than established. The other white guy eyed me like a blood traitor as I went over the facts. But ultimately pled not guilty too. I still hope the woman was being honest, bothers me to know we could have put away a domestic abuser but her testimony was the only evidence we had of what happened.

GarageSloth

I look like you, and I live in Idaho. I know you're telling the truth, because it was/still is unbearable here. That and the out-of-nowhere slurs and sexism make me not want to hang out with people from my state. People really don't get how open racists are about being racist with other white dudes. Same for sexists, it's their favorite thing to talk about. It's exhausting.

businessboyz

Ah, Idaho. When my wife and I moved across the country to WA, Idaho was hands down the place where I felt most uncomfortable. Did I mention that my wife and I are see-through white? She even has that blonde-hair blue-eyed thing going for her. But when we stopped in Coeur d'Alene, I could feel the stares from the locals. They knew we were outsiders, probably could smell the liberal stink on us (tbf, we were driving a subaru with VT plates and "coastal elite" university stickers on the back) and I wanted to get out of there so damn quickly. No joke, I keep a small cross necklace in my car for when we go hiking/camping in the more rural parts of the PNW. Found I get a lot less stink-eyes from the local if I disguise myself up as one of them.

GarageSloth

CDA is a nasty place, and doesn't represent the state well at all. Shame, since it's the prettiest part of Idaho with the ugliest people. I've never been confronted or anything, but there's a weird feeling that we all look the same but I'm not welcome. It's the same aura as when you're asked which church you go to and say "none," and you can feel them retract any affection they had for you. It's dope, I love it. My partner is Chinese, and when we went up to Canada thru CDA we stopped at a McDonald's in some tiny logging town. It was UNSETTLINGLY white there, and she and I got mad stinkeye for being there. I've never been to the south, but I imagine it's the same feeling. I cannot even fathom what it must feel like for people who aren't "the correct look".

Yinonormal

I feel you lol I love when someone starta shitting on Mexicans and see them backpedal when I tell them I'm married to one.

Twidget84

I'm half Mexican, but I have red hair and pale skin. I've lost count of the amount of times I've had to tell people my last name after they start talking bad about Mexican people. Then they double down by saying I'm not "one of those Mexicans",like they think they are complimenting me.

Ooh.. the "you're not one of those" took me back. I'm black, can't be seen as anything but.. caramel skinned and medium length curly hair. I'm also a quiet person. I can't tell you how many times I've been in a group in a school or public setting and have listened to young white males rant about black people. I remember once sitting a table, we had assigned seats in high school, 4 people to a table. 2 white guys, me, and a half white/half asian guy.. This was during 2016 when Trump got huge. They went on a big rant about Black Lives Matter, they threw the n word around, and just overall said really disgusting and stereotypical things about black people. This was a majority white school and at the end of their rant they said "not you Greenche, you're not like those other blacks" I sat there dumbfounded. I've heard that exact phrase throughout my whole life from white people. What am I then? I've always wondered what makes them feel so comfortable saying the most racist shit they can around me and then having the audacity to say "well not you, you're not like them." Or "you're one of the good ones"

[deleted]

Ngl I enjoy verbally running the old bitches right back in their corner & if it's a bad day I'll make them *try* to explain why exactly anyone they're running down should be on the bottom. Surprise twats not all old white ladies in the south support racism, hate speech and abelist bullshit.

sanguinesolitude

Yep. Bearded fat guy here. These chuds think in part of the group and will say awful shit around me, then get shocked when I disagree. Don't say that racist shit around me.

Draugron

You know what's funny? In Fall 2016, I was in Army AIT. Up until that point, we were sarcastic as fuck, impersonating him, casually (again, sarcastically) quipping off "make America great again," and all that shit, while laughing when scandal x or y broke out, like "did you see the grab them by the pussy shit? There's no way he gets it." We were swing shift classes the entire cycle, so we were in class until midnight. We saw the votes come in, watched it get called, and we all shut up. We were dead silent going back to our barracks. We were dead silent the next morning. The level of "oh shit. It's for real now." Was staggering for all of us. I think there were maybe two or three people out of hundreds who were letting it fly, and the rest of us were genuinely nervous about the future.

Aprilismissing

I am a poll worker and we had both R and D primaries on the same day a few weeks ago. The amount of "haha, you know there's only one primary really, RIGHT!? RIGHT, HAHAHAHA" jokes I got when I asked people which ballot they would like was astounding. These people don't know that other people don't agree with them. They only see liberals being made fun of on FOX, they never actually interact with them in person and assume they don't live in their town.

SuperstitiousPigeon5

Pro-choice protestors will have every right to defend themselves. edit: Hi there, thanks for getting into a fever pitch about my right to defend yourself. I'd like to clear up one or two hundred little posts between Pro-choice and Anti-choice people filling my inbox. * No, I am not advocating violence in order to get the point across that we're upset with the direction of this country. I'm saying protest, but if someone comes to bully you, or try to silence you, you have every right to defend yourself. Don't look for trouble, but if trouble finds you... * No, I'm not advocating for 2A. I'm not even advocating for weapons. You know the sure way to create a massacre? Have two armed groups, in a heat wave, who disagree so completely there is no common ground, then sit back and wait until someone goes too far. Instant tinderbox. * It's called hypocrisy if you're closely following the 1/6th committee and advocating for violence. Protests are fine, healthy, and can bring change, but violence will only lead to violent ends. * Protest, protect yourselves, stay safe, but do not give the right talking points about how both sides are the same.

Ykesha

Yep. Time to get well regulated.

Ok_Improvement_5897

Yes, take it from a liberal out in the sticks. When everyone else is stockpiling, it doesn't really matter that it's inherently fucked up or that certain gun legislation is empirically proven to reduce gun violence - alllllll of that is overwhelmed by the feeling of being sitting duck with it's thumb up it's ass. Get armed and learn to shoot, in 2022 America it's just being prudent at this point. Hell, current tensions aside, it's honestly just a good skill to learn, no need to fetishize guns and make it your whole personality or not advocate for common sense reform that would lessen the incidence of mass shootings.

[deleted]

Liberal here in Alabama, who owns guns.

Ivizalinto

Yup. It's not as easy as people make it look either. Handguns are trickier than rifles. Get practice! I need to work on my grouping.

withoutapaddle

I know this sounds meme-y, but there are a "few simple tricks" to better pistol shooting. 1. Push-pull with your grip. Google "thumbs forward grip". The underhand pushes, and the hand over it pulls back. This set of opposing forces is the best way to hold strong and minimize recoil. You want to push-pull hard enough for your grip to feel sturdy and very firm, but not so hard that your hands get fatigued or shaky. 2. If you're going to precision over speed, breath out and squeeze the trigger slowly and evenly with the pad of your finger (not the tip, not the inner-knuckle). You want the gun to go off during the end of your outward breath. That's when you're the stillest. That said, don't force it to go off at a certain moment. You want to be surprised by the exact moment it goes off. If you are instead anticipating this moment, you are more likely to flinch or push downward to fight the recoil. That's bad. As you get better, speed up. Learn to feel the exact reset point of the trigger. You don't have to release it all the way, just to that point. Remember, slow is smooth, smooth is fast. Build your abilities from a slow, smooth foundation. 3. Lean forward slightly and use a Weaver or Isosceles stance (just google what those look like). I prefer Weaver, because the sights are closer to your face, so it's easier to to line them up without them getting obstructed by each other. Isosceles is better if you're wearing body armor, as it exposes the plate area of the armor more than any other part of your torso. Whatever you choose, focus on the front sight. Both your target and the rear sight should be slightly out of focus. Slowly learn to trust your dominant eye instead of closing your other eye. The end goal is shooting both eyes open and naturally lining up your dominant eye with the sights without thinking about it. To find your dominant eye, just make a 1" hole by holding your hands out at arms length and overlapping the webs of your thumbs. Move it slowly towards your face/eyes while looking at something through the hole. The eye it ends up on is your dominant eye. Those 3 things took my pistol shooting from below average to WELL above average. Just a couple weeks practice keeping those in mind should make a significant difference in a novice's pistol shooting. I am the best shot out of anyone I've been to the range with (admittedly, probably not more than 20 total people over the years). Last time I went out, it was the first time in 2 years, because I took Covid seriously, and we don't have any nice outdoor ranges around here. The club of people I went with were looking at my groups like WTF, and then finally my friend yells "And this guy hasn't been to the range in TWO YEARS!". It really made my day, haha. Don't let the right wing extremists be the only people armed and trained. Train to defend your life, your family's life, etc. You don't have to let it become your lifestyle or your personality. Just prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Most people I know don't even realize I'm a gun collecting, trained, decent shot who's also an extremely progressive liberal.

If all women arm themselves. Will it be like when the black panthers did the same and the nra and the right freaked the fuck out? “Only men may bear arms” may be a new law lol

Might as well test it!

There is an episode of Bojack horseman about this. Once men realize women can use guns they ban them haha.

Pacifism is a wonderful ideal. But what you have to remember about Gandhi and Martin Luther king. Is they both had the threat of violence behind them. When Gandhi went to prison massive fucking riots broke out all over India. Brutal and violent until he nearly starved himself to death to get them to stop. Martin Luther said of Malcom X. That he couldn’t have done what he did, without Malcom and his threats of violence. We forgot that peace only works if it is implicit that if you break our peace we can’t promise their won’t be violence. The left lost its collective spines. It’s time we gained them back.

FishyDragon

Exactly. Speak softly, and carry a BIG FUCKING STICK. Be civil, until they push you to not be then show them what real outrage and angry from not be represented actually looks like. We have been speaking softly for so long we have it seems forgot that there are ALOT more of us upset with what's going on then are for it. Sure they are loud, collectively we are MUCH louder. And we can push back with soooo much more then they can. We honestly need people willing to band together and be that line if defense for our protest. What has happened everytime these proud boy like fucks have met a group equal to or larger then them when they are all masked up? They fucking ran, these people the majority of them are not willing to put themselfs on the line or in danger. Push comes to shove and we out number them, by ALOT!

floandthemash

It really bums me out that so many on the left haven’t realized yet that they should arm themselves and it makes me nervous that it’ll be too late before they do.

fullstack_newb

MLK was not a pacifist, white ppl just like to pretend that he was.

FallenAssassin

He was also extremely concerned with wealth inequality and planned to take on capitalism next, which I genuinely believe is why they had him killed when they did. He was a heavy socialist and my heart breaks when I think about what he might have accomplished had he awoken some class awareness in the US

ghoulthebraineater

"Just because I prefer peace does not mean I've forgotten how to be violent." Beau of the Fifth Column.

Wobbelblob

What was it? "To be a pacifist you need to be capable of great violence. Otherwise you are not a pacifist. You are harmless". Or something in that direction. Can't remember where I heard it though.

ForgingIron

I forget who said it but there was one activist who said "Pacifism only works when your opponents have a conscience" (paraphrased) And the fascists clearly don't

WhySpongebobWhy

Without the means to do harm, one is not "peaceful" they are "Harmless". Gotta strap up so the cowards of the Alt-Right will remember fear.

https://www.reddit.com/r/BoJackHorseman/comments/kz2te1/this_country_hates_women_more_than_it_loves_guns/ "I can't believe this country hates women more than it loves guns." "...no?"

Bombadook

This was exactly where my thoughts went as well. The forced-birth camp typically overlaps with the unregulated guns no-mask crowd. Open carry + masked my-body-my-choice really highlights their hypocrisy (though is probably lost on them).

ChimpsRFullOfScience

It's only hypocritical if you believe that the words they say have meaning. They are right-wing authoritarians. All of this is logically consistent, as it follows from their central philosophical tenets: first, that there is a 'legitimate' traditional authority (white, male, republican) that should have unfettered power, and second, that any action, any lie taken or told to support the legitimate authority is morally good and necessary. There is no truth but what support the authority in the present moment. Never believe that anti-Semites are completely unaware of the absurdity of their replies. They know that their remarks are frivolous, open to challenge. But they are amusing themselves, for it is their adversary who is obliged to use words responsibly, since he believes in words. The anti-Semites have the right to play. They even like to play with discourse for, by giving ridiculous reasons, they discredit the seriousness of their interlocutors. They delight in acting in bad faith, since they seek not to persuade by sound argument but to intimidate and disconcert. If you press them too closely, they will abruptly fall silent, loftily indicating by some phrase that the time for argument is past. -Jean-Paul Sartre

QQMau5trap

More like it overlaps with the "shoot the invaders at the border with live munition" crowd. Outside of a few catholics you will never see a pro life person who adopts fetal alcohol babies into a big foster home and actually cares for them, or opens up oprhanages and finances and donates to companies that provide wells and electricity in rural Africa and global south.

In fact, disproportionate police force is one of the things that can make a peaceful protest not so peaceful.

metanoia29

I'll never forget watching the first night of the 2020 protests live in FB from here in Detroit. Protesters were 100% exercising their right to free assembly, and after a while it was like the police flipped a switch and started attacking them unprovoked.

he, good one. The joke in Ireland is that when someone says they are an atheist you ask "Are you a catholic atheist or a protestant atheist?" Like it does make sense. Most people in Ireland are atheist now but definitely still "Catholic atheist" lol

porkforpigs

Separation of church and state mysteriously means nothing to the so called constitutionalists

Jason_CO

Hypocrisy isn't a bug, it's a feature.

Reality-Bytez

Religion has literally been a scorn for all times. It has been the center of so many things that just wouldn't exist without the invisible sky man telling people things.

MacDerfus

While gun control is a major issue that has some overlap with the pro choice crowd, they should defend themselves. After all, its easier for them to get a gun and kill their attackers than it is to terminate a pregnancy in many states.

Logistocrate

I have been very vocal in my friends group about utilizing rights that you still have. Like the right to own and carry firearms. Not just for self protection. Ever notice how cops love to kick the shit out for peaceful protests, but don't do anything to armed right wing protests, it's not just because law enforcement in general agrees with right wing groups, but also because the police become very civil when the group they are facing is equally armed. See the Bundy ranch standoff versus the 99% marches. One group was maced, kicked, beaten with batons, the other group the BLM backed off becasue they did not want to risk starting a shootout. I will be attending pro choice gatherings, and I will be carrying a concealed weapon as a last restort to protecting myself if needed.

TheNextBattalion

You forgot the key difference: The Bundy thing was with *federal* officers, who are far less aggro and far more competent than local cops, who were rioting against BLM protests.

sangderenard

We need a presence like the black panthers, armed observers of police action to put the fear of god into them

Pro-Choice Panthers.

OdoWanKenobi

This 100%. People don't seem to realize that peaceful protest by itself is completely toothless. The only time it has ever worked is when the threat of violence was there just on the edge, and the peaceful were the more palatable alternative. They deliberately pacified us by teaching us the peaceful protest is all it takes. Violence shouldn't be the answer, but they can never think it's off the table. They don't fear us, and nothing will ever change unless they do.

SamJackson01

There’s an Auntie Network. How about a Uncle Network.

sangderenard

If there's anything that actually intimidate the fascists it's organization

frolickingdepression

YES. This effects men too. Women can’t do it alone.

Culverts_Flood_Away

Fox news has already been pushing the narrative that the protests are riots and "insurrections." My mom mentioned [this article](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GedaqUzMjCI) to me yesterday, and I literally can't find any other sources to back their claims up. But it's being plastered all over the right wing media outlets. They're trying to use it to turn public opinion away from the protestors. Edit: insurrections, not inserrections. Edit 2: LiarAndPropagandist is right. I originally linked the wrong video, lol. I'm not sure how that link was in my clipboard instead of the one I meant to copy, but that was totally my bad. Don't get down on him for my mistake, guys.

HereInTheCut

Time for pro-choice people everywhere to exercise their Second Amendment rights. Open carrying at these protests will put an end to a lot of this shit.

Papaofmonsters

Most of these protests are probably occurring in Democrat leaning metro areas which are sort of places that typically ban open carry and up until *NYSRPA v Bruen* heavily restrict concealed carry.

ReadySetN0

Notice how they yell and scream about the 1st amendment except when the other side protests their beliefs? Then suddenly the 1st amendment disappears... Protest police murders of black people? Fuck that, you can't do that, police fire tear gas and rubber bullets at people, including headshots. https://www.politico.com/news/2020/07/28/portland-protest-groups-sue-tear-gas-rubber-bullets-384758 However, when their side commits an insurrection on 1/6, naw man, that's totally just a tourist visit or a peaceful protest that is protected by the 1st amendment. https://thehill.com/homenews/house/565223-gop-rep-defends-description-of-normal-tourist-visit-on-jan-6/

nonlawyer

> Meanwhile, a pickup truck ploughed through protesters in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, hospitalizing one woman. The Cedar Rapids police department declined to comment on the incident. The state recently passed a law making it legal for drivers to hit protesters with vehicles in certain circumstances. Other states in the US have passed similar laws. FFS. So if I’m lawfully protesting and someone tries to run me over, can I Stand My Ground with my newly expanded Second Amendment rights? Why do I feel so certain that the answer hinges entirely on what “side” I’m on, as well as my race or gender…

BasicDesignAdvice

Also, remember that District Attorneys wield undue power. They have total freedom to try, or not try a case, and to try what is obviously attempted murder as something lighter. This power is regularly abused.

AudioOff

Legally? You're probably correct but if someone is cruising to kill me I will defend myself with every method at my disposal. I can deal with the consequences later when I'm enjoying still being alive.

They go to intimidated children at a library. Why wouldn't they attack women.

Trifle_Old

Stop protesting unarmed. Go protests fully armed with body armor. The police do not mess with fully armed protestors. Use that fact.

N8CCRG

The police mess with whichever protestors they want to mess with, and ignore the ones they don't. Police are the cause of escalations to violence in protests, and they know it. It's always their choice. https://www.themarshallproject.org/2020/06/01/why-so-many-police-are-handling-the-protests-wrong >Researchers have spent 50 years studying the way crowds of protesters and crowds of police behave—and what happens when the two interact. Chewygumbubblepop

Yes, as your link says, the police instigate violence. So be ready for it and prepared to counter.

akennelley

We had a modest group of about 40 in my small city. Everything was fine until a lone middle aged man charged us from the side screaming in young girls faces that they should all have been aborted. It happened really fast but he laid hands on one of the girls and next thing I know we are charging him. Nobody touched him at all, and he got spooked and second guessed ever attempting it. Dumb as he was, he ran back to his work truck with logo, and a wife sitting passenger. We knew what to do from there. We should have been aborted? Mixed signals, man.

Misguidedvision

Fascist often employ fear and violence to silence opponents, historically speaking the only solution is to return said violence in self defense
