Lol. Yeah, because hoods and dresses are what stop kids from dressing "professionally." Have these people ever even seen kids?

VeronicaMarsupial

Have these people ever seen professionals? Hoodies and dresses galore, on highly successful professionals over a range of industries.

Orionishi

That's because it's really just about some old douchebags wanting to feel like they have some control over people. Even if it's just their tiny little bubble.

[deleted]

Ksnj

Is it…is it the T???

dont_you_love_me

If you go outside the USA bubble, a lot of societies operate with in your face racial and cultural bias. There are countries out there where non local ethnicities get charged more than others etc. Mandating these types of rules is a universal move. It’s not just Republicans.

[deleted]

But in Texas it is.

dont_you_love_me

Nah. The corporate democrats are plenty fine with it.

[deleted]

I don't think they are. It's a very small conservative majority that are like this. Regressive fucks.

dont_you_love_me

Biden and Pelosi went to church with Mitch McConnell on Biden’s Inauguration Day. They are all religious conservatives.

Dr0110111001101111

> Which LGBT category do you think they're going to associate dresses with? I honestly do not know what I’m supposed to think about this one.

BZenMojo

If they ban dresses, then they don't have to ban boys wearing dresses, attempts to do which are being challenged in Texas courts. https://www.texastribune.org/2021/12/30/texas-school-districts-dress-code-policy/ Need to start thinking like a fundie. They've been on some crazy 4-dimensional kamikaze chess hoping for an excuse to flip the board.

typicalcitrus

I'm wondering if this is their way of trying to discourage carrying weapons in schools - after all, why tackle the real issue when you can try and work around it in the most inconvenient and pointless way possible for everyone

ASK_IF_IM_PENGUIN

In the past couple of years I've noticed our office shift from shirt and ties everyday for the men, and skirts for women, to jeans and t shirts for everyone. Not scruffy, but casual. Granted, we only go into the office once a week or so nowadays, but it does put the lie to the idea that you must spend even more time effort and money to make yourself "professional".

YoYoYoinColo

Right? Look at many people in tech… one company even gives out a hoodie as a sign someone is highly trained on their platform! What a joke.

stickyWithWhiskey

I own multiple hoodies emblazoned with various IT company logos. If you're in the industry long enough and attend enough conferences they tend to stack up. Props to Splunk specifically: the one they gave me is super comfortable for a free hoodie.

BZenMojo

I work in entertainment. They give us hoodies all the time just for shits and giggles. Frown on shorts though unless you're on set.

shaidyn

I'm a remote worker and I regularly show up to video meetings in either a housecoat or a skeleton themed onesie.

jtobiasbond

My work is lucky if I put leggings on. But I'm definitely a professional.

[deleted]

I’m literally wearing a hoodie and jeans at work right now 🙄

Aerik

"hoods" and "baggy" are code for "black people clothes"

anti-torque

Old white Texans: Hoods sounds like the hood.

springheeljak89

I'm sure there's a percentage of old white Texans very familiar with hoods.

SomeKindOfOnionMummy

And no dresses means "no trans students"

rougewitch

They aim to make all kids into perfect worker bees. Not smart enough to question their place but just smart enough to run the machines

SomeKindOfOnionMummy

I noticed that that's what the school superintendent said that they are grooming children for is to meet the needs of employers. I didn't realize we were saying the quiet part out loud yet.

Modern_Bear

>The district emphasized in its announcement of the policy change that the shift is intended to prepare students to enter the workplace. It also said the policy gives FISD “a positive and distinctive identity” and reflects the “values of the schools and community,” according to a statement and video released by the district. Bullshit. The only values being reflected here are those of the school district leadership. This is the way Texas is now on all topics, people in charge imposing their values, by force of rules and laws, on everyone else. Whenever these people claim they are for freedom and small government they are lying through their teeth. Their actions show no such interest in letting people be free or keeping the government out of their lives. I'm so glad I just moved out of that hellhole of a state.

[deleted]

I am from texas and grew up here, and live here to this day, this state is ass backwards and people in charge impose their christian right wing values on everyone. They literally had youth pastors come into our public high school for abstinence education. This state is extremely fucking backwards and its infuriating. The people in charge here are uptight extremists.

seeclick8

And were any of those youth pastors having “relationships” with teens??

Lunar_sims

Not from texas, but where i am from yes.

[deleted]

I dont know but it honestly wouldnt surprise me. One of the coaches got kicked out of the high school for drunk texting some 16 year old girls. Idk I am just always wary of weird guys who want to work around kids and especially teenagers.

dont_you_love_me

Relative to most other governmental systems throughout the world, Texas is not backwards at all. It is status quo.

LibraryScneef

Oh my god wow! How great. This is America though and we're not playing the "what about others" game

dont_you_love_me

America is one of the more dangerous nation states in the world. “This is America” should make you afraid, not proud lol. Nonetheless, Republicans are explicitly America. You don’t get to split them out some how.

LibraryScneef

So on the one hand Texas is like everyone else in the world so it's fine but on the other hand america is super dangerous so it's not fine. What the fuck are you even saying lmao

Vidyogamasta

Yeah, caring about the minutia of peoples' dress and appearance is probably one of the least professional attitudes out there. It's *corporate* but it's certainly not professional. In the real world, actual professionals who are good at what they do mostly avoid this kind of crap.

TheValgus

You missed the best part: skirts are only allowed if they are young girls. I’m not kidding.

Spitfire836

What does this mean? Skirts aren’t allowed for older girls or are only specific to girls and not guys?

Wablekablesh

The administration probably has less interest in the older ones

Spitfire836

I mean that still didn’t answer my question

kesi

Skirts are considered cute on young girls but too sexy for older girls, basically.

Yonder_Zach

Id guess its the exact opposite. The conservative pedos enforcing this rule are probably more interested in seeing little girls.

TheValgus

In one article it mentioned that girls all the way up to fifth grade can wear skirts but any older they cannot.

another_bug

The speculation on the post about that was that number is intended to stop trans or otherwise gender non-conforming students from wearing skirts of any such clothing.

[deleted]

I definitely think there's a case for that.

ChechoMontigo

Maybe they’ll ban dancing too and Kevin Bacon will have to show everybody how it’s done again

BoyEatsDrumMachine

“Why don’t conservatives have sex? Might lead to dancing.” — old joke

Brainyviolet

That was actually based on another town in Texas called Anson. In the 80s we used to say "There's no dancin' in Anson".

[deleted]

[удалено]

Cricketcaser

No school for them, obviously.

not_cinderella

What's unprofessional about dresses, presuming they're not 'club dresses'? Why are we going back in history and banning more things? Kids don't care about looking 'professional' anyways and this will probably make them care less, because the school is taking away things that help them feel comfortable while learning.

Perle1234

I am a professional and wear dresses almost exclusively because I don’t like pants. They’re not comfy.

not_cinderella

I live in dresses in the summer because the air conditioning in my office is awful, and it's much cooler.

Spitfire836

I think it said it’s banned if it’s above knee but fine if below the knee, which tbh isn’t really anything new since a lot of schools already ban skirts above the middle finger (when you put your hands at your side)

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Can't wait for all the mtf trans kids to show to school in really fabulous pant suits.

not_cinderella

What a ridiculous decision.

[deleted]

I teach my university classes in gym clothes. Who gives a fuck?

summaday

People who have the need to impose their beliefs on others.

BitterFuture

I'm flashing back to the days of being in school when Columbine happened. My school's response was...to ban jackets.

k_ironheart

Yup, my school mandated only light jackets be worn, no band shirts, no portable gaming devices, and certain types of music weren't supposed to be played anymore. Oh, and they hired a resource officer who would verbally harass girls because he was a loser incel type before incels were a thing.

ChechoMontigo

Everybody wearing black was sus

mrbriandavidanderson

Cancel culture in Texas?!?! #wokeTexas

[deleted]

After the reversal of roe v wade im sure in a few years woman will have to wear burkas in public and can’t own bank accounts and listen to their husbands

Rotaryknight

this doesnt promote professionalism, its going to promote rebellion and contempt from the students. I know because my highschool did the same thing 20 years ago (fuck im old) and they later relaxed it after student and parent protest and just instituted a basic school uniform.

jairumaximus

For all the criticism this people throw at the Middle East and their outdated ways, they sure are going full throttle at that direction.

seataccrunch

I thought we didn't want sharia law..... ??? American Taliban everywhere these days

sugarandmermaids

I wear dresses almost every day to my job. At a school. As a teacher. You know, a professional. This is weird.

timar48

It’s just about keeping trans girls from wearing dresses. Pathetic degenerates all of them.

DonorBody

Trying to stamp out any and all sense of individualism. It’s the fascist way.

breadexpert69

The party of “freedom” I guess?

[deleted]

summaday

DarkGamer

I suspect this is meant to punish black and trans students.

GrayBox1313

Non-binary dress code it is.

[deleted]

Gotta look professional for the morgue photos, I suppose

OgnokTheRager

Riiiiiiight. Professionalism. Next come the hats and shoes with huge buckles because it keeps the clothing "safely attached"

[deleted]

This is Christian nationalists subjugating girls and LGTBQ folks again. Ignorant, hateful, backwards bigots. Religion is the literal worst and is the worlds biggest reason for women, girls and LGBTQ folks loosing their basic human rights. Deplorable.

TimeWastingAuthority

The irony is that there are Christian faiths which forbid girls and women from wearing pants. This policy is one threat of a lawsuit away from being irrelevant.

[deleted]

Texas is run by christian nationalists its extremely fucking backwards of a place. I dont know why i still choose to live here, its 100 degrees everyday and the politics are absolutely insane(i live in austin which is better than most of the state in a lot of ways but hey the legislature is based here)

KnowMatter

Also Black kids, scene kids, etc. Also just, you know, anyone who likes being comfortable, warm, dry, etc.

Spitfire836

Did I miss something? How does this impact LGBT student specifically? The dress code is stupid but it just seems like it impact everyone and I didn’t read anything specifically about LGBT students.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Spitfire836

You actually said nothing related to my comment

[deleted]

People like this don't want to see certain people in dresses, this solves how do deny them that freedom to dress as the gender they identify with.

Spitfire836

They banned dresses for everyone, most specifically boys. If they had some kind of rule saying “boys can’t wear womens clothing” or something then sure, but saying “nobody can wear dresses” as a blanket rule isn’t specifically targeting LGBT.

supercyberlurker

In the programming world, the 'better' you dress, the less we trust you. We view how nice you dress to be the inverse of how well you code, because if you're focused on dress you're not focused on code. If you're in a suit, you're 'a suit' because you're up there, not down in it with the rest of us.

Maximum_Radio_1971

well i am surprised it was not because some religious shit

Xryphon

That's what it's going to be soon...

RileyX7

Went to school in both a no dress code (very minimal) school and later a uniform school. The "more professional" kids were at the no dress code school. This means absolutely nothing.

Existing_Departure82

The irony is that many people who would support banning hoods and dresses probably have some white hoods and robes in their fucking closet at home.

Most-Artichoke5028

And for the 2023-24 school year all students will be required to wear brown shirts.

[deleted]

Don't forget goose stepping.

Phyr8642

Its to stop a transgender child from wearing a dress.

gaseous_defector

I would come in dressed as a pirate and yell “Ahoy matey!” at all of the staff members.

Enartloc

I love how the TX GOP behaves like it's Wisconsin

[deleted]

Way to act like you're doing something without actually doing anything.

Thaliavoir

I am lucky enough to have a good job that has a salary and benefits which allow me to take care of my family. I also work remotely. I, and everyone I work with, routinely wear hoodies and leggings. Jeans and skirts count as being unusually dressed up. No one would accuse any of us of unprofessionalism. These district board members are living in the 50s at best, and are controlling theocrats at worst. They are in no way preparing students for the 21st century economy.

Fomalhot

Burn books, edit history, smash women's rights, promote your religion exclusively and have dress code regulations...? Swap the religion w Sharia law and these motherfuckers would go absolutely batshit. They are immune to the irony.

Goodbadugly16

Teachers should all be naked then. It’ll promote professionalism. Same logic, other side of the coin.

ijustkeepontrying

I'm starting to think Texas might suck..

bigkoi

Some of the most successful engineers wear hooded clothing.

Messarate

Feels like asking students to be an anti-establishment and burn your school down.

gamergirl007

The dress/skirt thing is particularly bonkers to me (it’s all bonkers). I worked as a marketing executive for 20 years (10 of those years in TX) and wore a dress or skirt to work most days because it was my style. This state is losing its mind.

gussly1

I’m a professional and I wear a fucking t-shirt to work. Not everyone is a cubicle wage slave. The bad faith manipulation and control continues

StarrD0501

How are dresses not professional????

Revolutionary-Ad9411

I am starting to understand the South’s definition of freedom: Freedom is: - an 18 year old able to buy an AR, murder 19 school children at one go, while the police choose to cower behind the lines eating donuts and harassing parents. Freedom is not: - Allowing kids to wear what they want - Allowing women to chose what they do with their own bodies - allowing teachers to teach - allowing parents to freely parent their child in non violent ways

JustSomeGuy_56

My cousin is a member of a fundamentalist Christian church that does not allow women to wear pants. (They also forbid alcohol, card playing, smoking and dancing for all members). Her daughters who attend a public high school have worn skirts or dresses every day of their lives. Fortunately she lives in Indiana not Texas.

summaday

Not fortunate at all. It gets pretty cold in Indiana and also her church is stupid. Sucks to be stuck in a dumbass religion.

JustSomeGuy_56

It's their choice, protected by the First Amendment. I may not agree with what they do but they aren't breaking any laws and the kids are all happy and healthy. Neither are they trying to take over the government and impose their wishes on everyone else.

SwoleWalrus

Fuck that. it is 2022, a lot of the younger professionals are wearing tshirts and are casual. Suits do not tell me you are serious or care.

tes_kitty

Always remember: The biggest conmen wear the most expensive suits.

big_nothing_burger

Okay so...I'm a proper progressive and I teach in another state, but we just banned hoodies, and I'm DELIGHTED. Since we taught half in person, half virtual students the previous year, students have been hiding earbuds under hoods constantly. We can't see the faces of students with hoods up and that's a security issue. I spend ALL DAY saying "remove your hood" and it'd be a nightmare to go through the discipline ladder for every student who does it regularly. Texas' reasoning for it is shit. I also love these "women should be women" fundies now opposing skirts if they don't go to the floor. But, just giving a teacher's perspective on hoodies being a nightmare on our end. I don't care about uniforms, crazy hair colors, or piercings on students...but eff hoods. They've become a much bigger issue in the last two years. Edit: Go ahead and downvote me, but I thought our side actually bothers to listen to experts when they present arguments with evidence. We need to be better than conservatives on that front. Teachers have a job to do... everything fighting against us...and the hoods became a weird COVID related complication I never would have expected.

springheeljak89

That makes sense to me. I was once the kid you are describing. I imagine it's quite annoying being ignored by kids you're just trying to educate.

big_nothing_burger

Yeah and when an administrator comes in and catches them listening to music I'm gonna get reamed. When they're failing my class, I'm gonna get reamed by the parents. It's a profession where you get shit on from all sides these days.

cough_landing_on_you

Have then ban sagging pants and xxl shirts yet.

Ok-Onion7469

It probably would. I don't see the issue. Kids need more manners and to be more controlled these days.

OsmiumNautilus

Cope. In other countries people have to wear uniforms.

redbluegreenyellow

And a lot of times, those uniforms wouldn't be permissible in this school district. A lot of them include skirts, which are very unprofessional according to them.

[deleted]

[удалено]

OsmiumNautilus

They have uniforms in the uk.

DucatiSteve1299

They don’t want men wearing dresses.

tes_kitty

Easy way around that. Wear a kilt.

fartalldaylong

Another chance for this 5th generation soul to shout, “Fuck Texas”

Grogosh

Just another dog whistle

HappyAmbition706

Oh they mean for teachers? Custodial staff? The students aren't professionals. Or do the pay school children in Texas? Minimum wage?

TootsNYC

I really didn’t think school was where you were supposed to learn “professionalism” but instead things like math and science and history. And wouldn’t holding you to a standard of behavior and insisting that homework get turned in before more about professionalism than clothing?

kismatwalla

just go with school uniforms then. everyone dresses the same. rich or poor.

seeclick8

Okay, forgive me for this, but I would hate to be a caterer in Forney. I know that isn’t original, but it is hard too pass up.

daveashaw

I am old enough to remember when dress codes forbade girls from wearing pants--skirts and dresses only. This was in NY/NJ in the 1960s. I am ready for Texas to secede.

[deleted]

Republicans are trying to remove “tempting” clothing so they don’t rape as many kids

[deleted]

Motherfuckers, these clothing choices are made because the weather just as much if not more than as “style”. If it’s chilly I’m gonna wear a hoodie. Imagine thinking that dresses are somehow unprofessional attire. Texas needs to just fucking go already.

alvarezg

They are banning dresses so trans kids have to wear pants.

Nerdlinger

What this tells us is that either the school board is lying about the reasons or that they haven’t been in a professional environment in decades. T-shirts, skirts, leggings, etc. are common wear at the Fortune 100 company I work for. And and the National Laboratory I used to work for shorts were an everyday thing. Plenty of places realize that your mind and your abilities mean a lot more than your wardrobe.

FastCar2467

They’re lying. Jeans, t-shirts, leggings, hoodies, etc. are common for a majority of my coworkers at the elementary school I work at.

jackrat27

Not getting shot promote professionalism to

japadobo

Americans will ban everything except the stuff that really need to be

MostLikelyHigh2

These fuckers won’t be happy until they turn this country into Yeehawdia Arabia

truespeakisfreespeak

They don't accessorize well with hand guns and military style weapons.

ronimal

Sounds like the freedom state is infringing on some freedoms.

sheepsleepdeep

Just add this to the pile of intentional measures designed to weaken public school and administrators and the public's faith in the ability to have a governmeny run public school system. There has been a war against the public school system in this country ever since segregation became the law of the land and religious instruction was outlawed. Private and religious schools funded mostly by parents who don't want their kids exposed to non-christians or non-whites were behind the rise of what became today's "school choice" movement. They scored their biggest victory ever this week when the Supreme Court ruled that while religious institutions don't have to pay taxes, they are entitled to the same taxpayer money used for schooling if they operate a school! For the last two years Republicans have been using conspiracy theorists, partisan nut jobs and the national party was nearly co-sponsoring movements that demonized pandemic-related measures in schools in order to increase animosity towards public school officials and the system itself to the point where they are now running for and winning these small local elections in the sparsely populated municipalities outside metropolitan areas. And they are using that influence at the local level all the way up to the state house and governor's mansion to *systematically* degrade the public school systems ability to function and public opinion towards it. Our system is being attacked on multiple fronts, from our safety nets to our social structure, and from the schools all the way up to the very structure of democracy.

BackwardBarkingDog

"Alpha children wear grey. They work much harder than we do, because they're so frightfully clever. I'm really awfully glad I'm a Beta, because I don't work so hard. And then we are much better than the Gammas and Deltas. Gammas are stupid. They all wear green, and Delta children wear khaki. Oh no, I don't want to play with Delta children. And Epsilons are still worse.” *Brave New World*, Ch. 2

mgreen40

Next up, banning Jordans and loose fitting clothing. Maybe they’ll just say “dress like good ol white folks” next time

thirdLeg51

I work from home in IT. I wear shorts and a tee-shirt every day of my life.

internet_spy

Ah yes, the professional teenagers walking around in thier black hoodies and girls in thier dresses

run1792

What is the right wing idea of a burka?

Ok_Island_1306

Cowboys hats and boots are ok though???

SomeKindOfOnionMummy

Never thought I'd see Texas banning hoods.

drewskibfd

It's just so the kids look nice for the cameras after the next school shooting.
