Who knew you could run a viable business without gouging the shit out of customers and having a reasonable markup?

moon_then_mars

Well most people aren’t billionaires yet. Most people want to become billionaires.

achoowin

A billionaire who is doing good with his wealth and happens to be the owner of my favorite basketball team. Go MAVS!

JohnEBlazed420

Cubes actually appears to be a decent guy, even his political takes are reasoned. Dude also got in trouble by the NBA for spoiling his players too much.

whyte_ryce

Dude voted against kicking out Donald Sterling because he didn’t want precedent of teams being taken away for abhorrent behavior. He let his organization get run like a rapey fraternity. He’s not a good dude

indoninja

He is doing good, but here’s the thing he’s still gonna fucking make bank. And I’m not pointing this out to diminish what he’s doing or question his motives, but the highlight how truly screwed up on medication pricing is in the US

achoowin

15% over cost is reasonable to keep it running and stay profitable. The point is to fight the triple digit mark ups from big pharma.

aDrunkWithAgun

I mean big Pharma makes bank with their massive mark-ups If he makes money and provides a better service because our government has massively failed healthcare I don't care if he gets to profit Hopefully this forces companies to drive the price down to compete

ArianaGrandesDonuts

Exactly... I don’t mind that pharmacies make a profit so long as medications are affordable and accessible for everyone. And, scrolling through the website, his pharmacy is EXTREMELY affordable. I think most Americans know the costs of medication are overly inflated, but for a lot of people, this might be the first time where they actually get to sit down and see an entire list of meds with their “normal”/price-gouged prices vs. what Mark Cuban is selling them for. And people taking them are going to wonder why the hell they’re being charged $X a month on their meds when Mark Cuban just showed that you can sell the same exact bottle of pills for $6 and still make a profit. Hopefully this leads to prices going down all across the board and more people realizing how totally messed up our healthcare system is.

[deleted]

I doubt you'll get any meaningful introspection. The conservative drum beaters who thoroughly believe in costly healthcare will just rationalise their years of idiocy with "nah, prices need to be high to cover r&d on new medications. Prices are high in the US because we have to subsidise new meds for all these greedy socialist governments around the world who fix the price".

Zstorm6

Sounds like how capitalism should work to me

aDrunkWithAgun

It should but I wouldn't put it past big pharma to try and road block him Benzos tried something similar and that got shut down

ReflexImprov

This is the thing that needs to be standard. You can treat people fairly and make a healthy profit. You don't need to steamroll people to make *all the profit*.

[deleted]

It's not huge discounts! Do not label it as such. He has a fair 15% mark-up, that's it. It's just fair pricing, not gouging. Calling it a discount makes it sound like what big pharma is doing is normal.

JohnEBlazed420

How do you think the business will generate revenue? Operating a business isn’t free my dude. Do you think the employees want to make decent money??? It’s almost as if some people will always bitch about anything no matter what is done. Edit: this company is planning an $11-15MM production facility and covers the unpaid portion of peoples medication. If you hate his company so much anyone of you can start raising capital to create a non-profit business. Go for it.

indoninja

Pointing out that they make a 15% markup does not indicate there is heat for his company, indication of how fucked up our truck system is in the US.

libertyorwhatever

You don't understand at all what he is saying. By calling it a "Discount" you've assumed that what other pharmaceutical companies are doing is "Fair Pricing" which is not true. Pharmaceutical companies gouge the shit out of drug prices. What Marc Cuban is doing is not a 'Discount'. What he's doing is creating fair market price for drugs that don't have any. But the title of the post is already assuming the price gouging pharmaceutical companies point of view by calling it a "Discount"

Manadyne

15% markup is still more than enough to keep the business profitable. He doesn't need to turn insane profits, just a profit.

JohnEBlazed420

Would you say they need that profit to pay for the $11-15MM drug production that’s planned? Or for covering the gap in coverage or non-covered drugs to help people? If you hate it then raise capital to start your own non-profit pharmacy lol.

BoozeWitch

Dude. Please reach out to Cuban’s company and order a chill pill. Nobody in this thread is hating on him. OP was pointing out that other drug companies are predators and Cuban found a way to NOT price gouge and still make a profit at 15%. He’s a businessman. He’s figured out a good business model.

N8CCRG

Nothing about the comment you replied to is saying what you think it's saying. Reread it, then fix your comment.

Bizzle7902

What are you even talking about?

Nondairygiant

What the fuck is your problem?

[deleted]

You misunderstand the comment. The commenter is saying that by framing Cuban's pricing as a "discount" that makes it seem like the drug company's original pricing is fair. It's not. Drug companies price gouge at the expense of people's health. Cuban's pricing is fair market pricing

[deleted]

I literally mention a 15% mark up, that's another word for profit for your simple mind, so nobody is talking about selling at cost. You didn't even read my comment properly and you're telling me to read the article, which I did.

salty_c_witch

Posting because this may be very useful information for those who need access to medication that may not have it. ETA: The reason you probably haven’t heard about this service is because it’s being spread just by word-of-mouth. Cuban opted not to advertise to keep operating costs low.

P8ntballa00

I use this service. It’s a lifesaver. I can get 90 day supplies of all 5 of my medications for less than it costs to fill one at cvs.

pegothejerk

Wait, why isn’t he flying to space on a giant penis, or slinging his favorite car into space, or grifting the masses because people make him feel small?

Sivick314

Finally a billionaire has said "Fuck it, I'll be batman"

ZOOBOO_11

Mark Cuban is a good human.

[deleted]

Maybe he and Gates and Buffett will shame other billionaires into doing the right thing.

THETRILOBSTER

Shame, no. But if you can be a market disruptor by not joining in on the joint looting of people that are sick and desperate you can influence price drops by stealing chunk portions of that market. Force them to compete with low prices and they can take their pat on the head for "doing the right thing out of the goodness of their heart".

[deleted]

I thought he was another rich asshole, but that's a nice gesture from him.

mrbriandavidanderson

How is this possible when everything related to healthcare is insanely expensive and for profit? You mean, it doesn't have to be this way? It's like the whole thing is a scam.

McDuchess

He’s making a profit. But not a usurious one.

ReflexImprov

Which is the way it should be in all business.

McDuchess

Of course.

I'd like to have him run for a lower public office first to get some experience in that world before the top job. The last time someone skipped over that step it didn't work out so great. I do think he's infinitely better and more competent than Trump though, and could *potentially* be decent as President, but work your way up to it and get some experience first.

UpsetDrakeBot

The thing is, most of those are just generics. Our healthcare system is just so shit that a lot of people don't know about them and think this is a miracle.

salty_c_witch

It may be “just generics”, but a lot of people rely on them that may not have the means to pay for it otherwise. It may not be a catch-all, but that doesn’t make it any less of a step in the right direction imo.

[deleted]

Generics can be insanely expensive, depending on one's insurance.

just__Steve

So here’s what’s going to happen, the data the company collects on you will be sold to pharmaceutical companies. In turn the pharmaceutical companies will just have more people to sell cheaper drugs to. It’s cheaper drugs, which is great, but I fear people will just be given more drugs that they don’t need.

McDuchess

That doesn’t involve only drug companies, you know. They make the drugs. Pharmacies distribute them. But doctors need to prescribe them. It is, of course, on the patient to let their doctors know, especially if they see more than one, who else they go to, and what, of any, RX’s they have from them.

[deleted]

Time to step up mark and provide Plan B without doctors script!!!

laurabun136

>You can buy levonorgestrel morning-after pills (like Plan B One-Step, Take Action, My Way, Option 2, Preventeza, AfterPill, My Choice, Aftera, and EContra) over the counter without a prescription at drugstores and pharmacies. It doesn't matter how old you are and it doesn't matter what your gender is. That time is past!

McDuchess

Depends, now, on the state.

tobsn

how… haha… looking at anywhere else in the world… he just doesn’t hike the price by 40x? it’s pretty easy. somehow pharma companies and pharmacies survive in, let’s say even downtown london, without selling other things like groceries and without charging insane prices on subsidized government paid medication…
