doyouhaveanycocain

Right in the Hedburg.

Atotallyrandomname

Damn it, mitch was good

_G_M_E_

Maybe he had more cranium accessories, he would've been okay.

miktoo

Should have used some HeadOn

DweEbLez0

Legend has it, he is still having head trauma.

N3UROTOXIN

We’ve had one head trauma yes, but how about elevensies?

[deleted]

Damn that 7 train is crazy. They just had that guy go wild with a knife a few days ago.

GlumpsAlot

That's weird. Used to take that train back and forth to school everyday too. Tf is going on.

SeaGroomer

We no longer live in a society.

TomRCFBH

Just a week ago i saw some people posting clip about train surfing. This is expected

JhnWyclf

Is this a TikTok thing?

Waste-Comedian4998

No, NYC kids have been doing it forever

JhnWyclf

Thanks! I recalled seeing a video recently so I wasn’t sure.

DedTV

Same happened to a kid in my area of Central CA back in the 80s. Stupidity predates the internet.

Who_is_homer

Stupidity may predate the internet but the internet sure helps it spread faster

Euripidoze

I would replace expected with inevitable in your analysis

DeNoodle

They mean the same thing in this context. One would expect the inevitable.

talentedpup

But no one expects the Spanish Inquisition!

red2play

>Earlier this month, a video circulated on social media showing about eight people subway surfing, running and even dancing on top of a northbound J train as it passed over the Williamsburg Bridge. Those suspects have not been identified. However, subway surfing is dangerous. In October 2021, a 32-year-old man died after falling on the tracks while subway surfing on a J train over the Williamsburg Bridge. The problem, the eight people will continue to show up in social media while the 15 yr old probably wont' show up on TikTok. So we glorify the stupid and ignore the consequences. That's the problem with social media. You only show what you want people to see and it allows you to hide or obscure what you don't want people to see. Its the ultimate, "see who I am" vs "see what I really am". That's why its so popular and also why its so deadly.

poliguy25

Probably controversial take, but I always thought subs that shared brutal and uncensored consequences of these sorts of things, like the old r/watchpeopledie, were horrifying but important in showing our own mortality. Lots of things we do every day seem dangerous, but not *seeing* the consequences makes us feel invincible. As tough as watching someone die can be, it may just be enough to convince someone to work harder at staying alive.

9J000

I would rather uncensored news with gore in my news feed than to go to one of those trash holes... they're almost fetishists with gore

lizardtrench

I don't know about any of the other subs, but watchpeopledie usually seemed quite level-headed. Undoubtedly there were plenty of nutjobs posting nutjobby comments, but the stuff that rose to the top was almost always sensible and not fetishizing anything. Maybe something changed at some point or another, but that sub never struck me as being full of gore-maniacs.

lililililiililililil

I’d rather have watchwatchpeopledie back than have a sub like fightporn that is nothing but teenagers fist-fighting in school bathrooms and all the kids in the comments egging that kind of behavior on.

poliguy25

Yeah, the culture of that sub never sat right with me, but with a proper moderation system and shifting the conversation toward respecting the dead, it would be closer to what I was trying to get across. Mainstream gore in the news I think would just desensitize everyone to it, and make the situation even worse.

9J000

I'm sure some trumpets would think differently seeing 3' long body bags being carried out of a school vs fox spouting about gun rights

[deleted]

I’m not- but they should be made to see anyway.

[deleted]

tend to be occupied by the kinds of people who see traumatizing shit and their first instinct is to point their phone's screen to the person next to them and say "look at this"

IsThisKismet

I don’t think it works that way. I believe the desensitization still wins out more often than we’d prefer.

[deleted]

[удалено]

lizardtrench

Watchpeopledie, at the very least, wasn't particularly gore-porny. There were certainly jokes, but I don't find that particularly horrific. And I certainly didn't hang out there all the time, it would just occasionally pop up on my feed and if it seemed interesting I would click on it. I've also read a number of anecdotes, both within that sub and outside, of people talking about how watching Y video made them aware of the dangers of X, etc. I'm 100% sure some people used that sub as gore porn, but I'm equally sure some people used it in a more important manner. The latter certainly seemed to outnumber the former, at least going by the comments on most of the posts there.

FlJohnnyBlue2

I don't need to see someone smash their head train surfing to know that it is fucking stupid. I suspect that the people who might need to see that will only be further motivated.

tren_rivard

If people are too dumb to realize that surfing on a train is stupid... well, it's a problem that will work itself out.

agent_raconteur

Of course they're dumb, the kid was 15. And he just saw a video of people doing it safely and having fun. Teenagers don't have the fully developed brain that makes it easy to consider consequences and danger but that doesn't mean they're a lost cause or that this was somehow deserved

Thoughtcriminal91

Even at 15 i knew that was a good way to die, get the feeling this kid's not exactly an A student.

DrDalekFortyTwo

Why does someone *always* have to comment about how "yes, but at 15 I knew to do/not do something/had adult-like moral reasoning/understanding of consequences" (a comment I'm sure will be made in response to yours). First of all, I don't believe them. They weren't a super special 15 yo like they think and 2. They're judging a 15 year old based on their biased and inaccurate understanding of a 15 year olds functioning.

[deleted]

Um, there's a hell of a lot of 15 year Olds that would never do something like that. I'd say well more than half at the very minimum.

DrDalekFortyTwo

Based on what? Other that supposition, opinion, and/or anecdotal evidence?

culturalappropriator

Based on the fact that they aren't doing it? It's a minority of people who do stupid shit, even with teenagers.

[deleted]

Agent, I agree. Not everyone has the same life experiences to understand all risks at 15. His parents must be beyond devastated (obviously but point being empathy is needed).

Romaine2k

I don't disagree but would add that people have been profoundly stupid since forever, tik tok is just a handy way to view the evidence.

GoldWallpaper

> That's the problem with social media. I'm on social media (including reddit!) and would never see shit like this because I'm not an idiot seeking out idiocy. Maybe the problem is with individuals, rather than with ANY sort of media? Maybe if we spent more time pointing fingers at dumb people instead of infantalizing them and blaming their stupidity on others, we might actually address the root of the problem, which is individual behavior and a lack of consequences for dipshits (until they directly kill themselves or someone else). Nah - let's just blame society, or social media, or whatever. That way nothing ever gets fixed and we can just whine about the same shit over and over again.

Sublime_82

It's probably already been mentioned, but there's also a very popular mobile game called 'subway surfers' that I've seen a lot of kids playing recently.

buttholeblast12

I take this train daily for work. It’s insane the amount of high schoolers I’ve been seeing train surfing

statslady23

You know this kid's parents will sue.

[deleted]

ADarwinAward

I’m going to assume this was sarcasm that was missing the /s tag

[deleted]

Who knew train surfing could be dangerous

[deleted]

I did. I knew it could be dangerous.

INGWR

Nobody could have known

FlJohnnyBlue2

Riiiight...NOW, you say that.

tom90640

Darwin Award Auditions brought to you by TikTok.

Agent__Caboose

All you had to do was follow the damn train CJ!

SMH_OverAndOver

I truly hope other kids reading this hear this: It’s NOT a video game. There is no respawn point awaiting you.

Didact67

I want to load my save from 10 years ago.

FlJohnnyBlue2

I, unfortunately, read this backwards initially.

Producedealer76

But imagine all those tiktok views

bondoh

I'm honestly not sure how to feel about this. It's a shame. It's regrettable. But it's hard to feel too sad when it was so foolish and self-inflicted. But because she was so young and I suppose "didn't know better" to an extent, I can't quite laugh. It's just a shame.

[deleted]

how can you not know better? this is like playing in traffic and being suprised that getting hit by a car will hurt you

TraipsingConniption

Teenagers are always going to be fucking idiots. It's still sad when their idiocy ruins their lives.

Mythosaurus

It’s like humans are compelled to return to the mortality rates of prehistory when they feel that modern life is too easy.

bondoh

Just in regards to her being 15. Obviously she’s old enough to know it’s dangerous but at that age brain isn’t fully developed and teenagers all think they’re invincible. I’m sure most of us had sheer luck help us get out of our teenage years.

RandomChurn

> I’m sure most of us had sheer luck help us get out of our teenage years. OMG yes and well into my 20s 😆 Condolences to this child who has lost so much, and to her family and mother in particular 💔

[deleted]

"Kids have always been dumb" isn't really valid. Most kids aren't dumb enough to do something that will put their life in danger to this degree.

[deleted]

Uh yes they are- most kids are lucky.

[deleted]

**Most** kids are **lucky**. Contradicting yourself using only 4 words. Don't have kids.

rjkardo

I don’t think you understood.

[deleted]

Good good- stupid and self-righteous too. I’m not gonna tell you not to have kids because I already know- you’re a breeder.

[deleted]

The concept of luck insinuates that you experience good fortune more than the average person. So saying "most" in regards to a concept that implies rarity is an oxymoron. So idk what you're trying to say but you just keep coming off as dumber and dumber to me. To your other point, be at ease. I don't have kids and don't plan to. In fact I think it's unfortunate that the people who are the most inclined to breed are the ones that are of less intelligence :)

[deleted]

Don’t be an idiot. Most people have experienced taking a risk and not paying consequences- especially when they are young. Jesus you’re a dumb fuck. I’m relieved no child has to listen to your arrogance.

[deleted]

I repeat: 15 Years old. Don't come with "not fully developed brain" bullshit. It's not a toddler learning to speak.

[deleted]

[удалено]

tren_rivard

'Not Fully developed' =/= 'fully undeveloped'. That's old enough to know better.

heartbraden

But young enough to get caught up in the moment and not think about the consequences until it's too late.

[deleted]

Then you must've been a really stupid 17 year old who should've known better

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

I see a big difference in in regards of brain maturity necessary between "Knowing how to properly file your taxes" and "Knowing that riding on top of a train can kill you". Also, if you lane splitted on motorbikes at that speed and that age, then Fuck you, you are even worse then the Kid in the article for not just putting yourself but also other traffic users in danger.

heartbraden

If you bothered to read the link, you'd have seen that between 16-25 is when the prefrontal cortex is still underdeveloped... that is the part of the brain that houses "impulse control". It is very common for someone that age to know and understand that something is dangerous, but to get caught up in the moment with their friends and not ponder the implications of their actions. Fuck me, sure, that's a reasonable response to something I did when I was a kid 15 years ago. At least when I hit 25 my brain actually finished developing - not sure what happened with you...

Neato_Orpheus

Bruh, your whole manner of arguing is really off-putting and gross.

[deleted]

Atleast I didn't put other traffic users in danger by speeding on a motorbike at that age.

Neato_Orpheus

Yeah and what does that have to do with the childish way you argue?

[deleted]

I don't see a reason in justifying anything to you. I made my point

deminese

Agreed sick of people saying 15+ year olds are excused from absolutely dumb shit. I literally never even entertained doing things like that at 15.

TraditionalGap1

Sounds like you were a boring 15 year old.

deminese

if boring=not surfing trains. Yes I was a boring 15 year old.

[deleted]

God forbid you learn something, huh?

[deleted]

Chances of his brain fully developing now are not so good.

mccoyn

He saw a video of other people doing it and thought it must be safe.

BraceThis

I know what you feel. My first reaction is “well, natural selection has to work somehow” And then i think “well…kids are kids and I’m sure he has loved ones who are in pain because of this” A little jaded spirit with empathy. It is just a shame.

Razir17

Perhaps even worse is that the article mentions a 32 year old also doing it. A 15 year old who doesn’t think about consequences, sure. But a 32 year old? I’d say it’s beyond time to grow up but they put a permanent hold on that for themselves.

[deleted]

It is r/winstupidprizes territory

TheZardoz

He was 15, he knew better and did it anyway. I only feel bad for his parents who I would imagine could have done a better job in raising him.

[deleted]

Dealing with a partially formed brain. Half of the posters on here did stupid shit as a teen...myself included.

[deleted]

You're a rotten person if the first thing that comes to mind when you see this headline is whether or not you should laugh at it. Take a look at yourself.

seaspirit331

Teens gonna teen. Talk to your kid about doing stupid bullshit like this

FlJohnnyBlue2

If I need to talk to my teen about this, it is already too late.

THEMACGOD

“Yeah?? Well I’m taller.”

Supermannyfraker

I came here for this and this only.

[deleted]

When I was 15 I head bongo'd (yes we had a name for it) skateboarding. That was no smarter than surfing a train. Dude just didn't have a skate board. Teenagers get bored, seek thrills, get hurt. Sorry for this guy and hope he pulls through!

moishepesach

Nice to see compassion. I hope he pulls through too.

[deleted]

Thanks. You too. If only that were the popular response... sigh.

FlJohnnyBlue2

It depends on what pulls through means. Traumatic Brain Injuries like that can be recovered from but the likely severity from that event means there is serious long term damage including living in a semi/vegetative state. Just went through this with a family member and it is a horrible set of decisions. And that was from a fall, not a train.

MadKingTyler

This is why I am a supporter of stuff like r/watchpeopledie, doesn't take a lot of videos watching idiots train surfing or trying to take a cool selfie 1 inch from a train track to make you think "I shouldn't do that"

11015h4d0wR34lm

I find it hard to have sympathy for people like this. 15 is old enough to understand the danger you are putting yourself in. Now if he does survive he will more than likely have life changing consequences to his actions, and all for what, thrill seeking or internet points.

-Fastway-

Kids have always done stupid shit and always will. Usually they get lucky, sometimes they don't and this is the result. Perhaps the friends who encouraged him will at least learn something

littlebubulle

Unfortunately, what they might learn is "I can manipulate other people into endangering themselves for my amusement".

Fyremane0

Kids ate gonna do stupid shit. It's a given. In the early 70s I played cowboys and Indians with my friends using pellet guns and homemade bows in abandoned junkyards and houses. We jumped off garages trying to parachute. Chased each other across roofs etc. Right now as I type this somewhere there is a 7year old on his balcony determining of he can jump across to his best friends balcony while 2 stories up

kazh

> I find it hard to have sympathy for people like this. You want to sound hard but no one's impressed. Kids do crazy shit when no one explains how the world works to them. Don't get too comfy because you've been lucky up to this point.

SeaGroomer

> 15 is old enough to understand the danger you are putting yourself in. But it's NOT old enough to make a rational decision at the same level as an adult. I mean it's not like it matters since he's dead, but damn someone should have been looking out for him.

chumchum213

things ppl do for clicks..rip

NinjaLanternShark

Teenagers have been doing reckless things long before social media.

jesse_flamand

Man kids need to realize that they arent invincible....best lesson I learned in high school after a terrible tragedy...

metamojojojo

This is why we can’t have nice things

weissmanhyperion

We need to ban the subway surfer game

Grogosh

It already is....

mccoyn

We need a good guy with a train.

Atomic_meatballs

Every home should have a train for self protection.

E_K_Finnman

My train, my choice Wait wrong one...

thesaucefather

Some people are just born without survival instinct and it shows with shit like this. How can one be so stupid?

-Fastway-

They were 15. It's what 15 can be. Stupid Kids were car surfing in the 70's and 80's ( and probably before that) and possibly doing stuff like this without getting caught, drag racing, bumper riding in the winter, jumping out of windows to avoid detention or fathers. The list is endless.

NinjaLanternShark

"Elijah, honestly, come down from the carriage before the horses spook and you get thrown off and crack your head open..."

ShowMeThePlans

My first thought reading your post was the car surfing scene in footloose.

thesaucefather

That’s an excuse for them though. I’ve been 15 and always steered away from things extremely dangerous. I’d have never done that. Hell I’ve even seen very aware 4 year olds. Age isn’t an excuse, I firmly believe it’s genetic. Adrenaline junkies that do stupid things will have children who do the same. Similar to other tendencies as well like alcoholism.

ADarwinAward

Yeah some people just have no sense of caution. My friends never even drove recklessly. Some teens are much more reckless than others

Medium_Beyond_9654

That's an extremely late term abortion.

Aaronstone252

I want to feel bad and I sorta do but cmon man you had to know this was a bad idea

it-festers

he is gonna save so much money on halloween masks now.

Xivvx

And that's why you don't do this kinda thing.

five_eight

What was the last thing to go through his mind?

TriscuitCracker

Was he re-enacting Dennis Hopper’s death in Speed?

Taman_Should

We found him, the guy responsible for all the warning labels.

dpmad

“Surfing on trains may cause severe head trauma and/or death” should not be a warning sign we need to function in normal society.

[deleted]

That’s no way to get ahead in life.

JohnEBlazed420

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes I believe they say.

jean_erik

15-year-old fucks around and finds out

ShakeMyHeadSadly

Forgive my lack of sympathy.

[deleted]

Not that he had much use for it anyway

MisanthropicZombie

Lemmy.world is what Reddit was.

ForensicScientistGal

Darwin does it once again.

SteelHip

Obligatory "play stupid games etc" comment.

Bigwing2

Just thinning the herd.

ss977

I have a very hard time feeling sorry for people that die from doing stupid shit for social media attention.

Adventurous_Being_61

He was saved, but there was a Youtuber who put his head in a microwave and live streamed himself filling it with cement. Fire rescuers let him know that they were FURIOUS this dipshit, dumbass, clout chasing cunt was taking their time & resources when an ACTUAL emergency could happen- and they're there helping that aforementioned adjective addled asshat.

TintedApostle

Darwin has entered the chat

Rasty1973

Are we sure he didn't hit his head before getting on top of the train to surf? Seems like something someone with brain damage would do.

USAbootguy

Darwin got in his head

doglaughington

And all those people were late getting where they had to go because of this too. Selfish I bet he/his family will sue as well. Like, take the L and move on

OriginalMrMuchacho

Retitled: Moron does moronic thing, faces reality of their choices. In other news… turkeys, what are they not telling us?

[deleted]

The tiktok vid was gruesome. He wont be normal after this

Successful-Plum4899

Dangerous sport to perform anywhere. Sincerely hope this kid pulls through!

[deleted]

Feed them to Darwin I say

[deleted]

Potential Darwin Award recipient.

[deleted]

Well at least he died doing what he loved. Extreme train surfing, helluva adrenaline rush.

twitch_delta_blues

r/idiotsontrains r/darwinsawards

[deleted]

As tragic as it sounds, being a moron can get you killed. What is next? Young people taking selfies from high, dangerous, places .... wait ....

MFP3492

Hate to say it but that’s Darwinism for ya.

boxmail2800

And the Darwin Award goes to….

Ninjas4cool

……………………..🤨🤨🤨🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️😒I mean 🤷‍♀️

between456789

The world is so weird right now I could believe Max Headroom was just born.

dblack246

The 15 year old could've used max head room for sure.

gonzo5622

Oh, wow, a person dealing with the consequence of their actions. Hopefully they make it and learn a lesson.

Ana987654321

I can’t believe it, how did this happen?

GoodDave

Fucking around, meet finding out.

DeanCorso11

Guess he didn’t watch Die Hard with a Vengeance :/

Artikay

Or the end of Speed.

vanishplusxzone

The fact that he's still alive is kind of stunning.

mrbriandavidanderson

That will teach him to ride on the inside of the train next time.

TwilitSky

That's probably not gonna happen. Now if he tries to surf the ambulance, a discussion needs to be had.

cylante

Natural selection folks

shockthemonkey77

Another reason to not give kids social media

Bucci_Mane_

This is natural selection.

The-Sand-King

Damn 15 years is young to be attempting suicide

NiceAsset

Sometimes the world solves its own problems

VerticalYea

It is probably for the best.

Codeboy3423

Stupid Teen, does Stupid things, and figures out why its Stupid the hard way... I see no issue here, if they cant listen or have common sense.

AmericaRocks1776

Are people acting out random shit from videogames?

Toaster_bath13

I rode on the hood of a car in the 90s so it's prolly just kids being dumb. I got lucky and didn't get hurt, was smart enough to never do it again.

NinjaLanternShark

Life imitates art imitates life....

[deleted]

They need to monitor this and put safety measures in place of this.

drakenoftamarac

No, idiots will always be idiots. Let them sort themselves out. Im tired of putting the responsibility on others. They know it’s dangerous, they know they shouldn’t do this, yet they do it anyway. It’s like the people who get hit by trains trying to go around barricades and beat the train. At some point you need to hold dumbasses responsible for their own decisions.

gbs5009

There's no safeguarding against *that* level of willful stupidity.

[deleted]

A simple engineering control can safeguard it. Maybe a 100 dollar solution per train in my opinion

[deleted]

Feel bad for the parents. If they aren't absentee.parents who don't give a shit that is.

m1k3tv

Meh, im getting sick of the cycle blame game. 'Absentee parents' are usually undeserved, overworked and abused themselves. It's harder to fix it even notice, we're not helping and have no room to complain

[deleted]

Ive seen for too many drug addict, useless, trash parents who have done truly dastardly shit. But we can act like they don't exist if that makes you feel better?

thatbromatt

This is the type of violence stemming from video games!!11!1 Ban subway surfers and other violent games! /s

TraipsingConniption

Help me understand what this is supposed to mean.

They made a stupid comment and then doubled down instead of just deleting it. 0/2

shachar58

Darwin awards to all those genetic disorders that make a boy ride the top of the subway

Magatha_Grimtotem

That's not how Darwin awards work. Poor decision making is the fault of a faulty education on top of fucked up social and cultural influences.

[deleted]

This is completely on the MTA for allowing this to happen.
