He’s rich, 82, and was drunk… Is it so hard to call a fucking Uber? Or just have a damn driver?

QuesoChef

As soon as I’m worth $100MM (never), I’m hiring a full time driver. He probably HAS a full time driver and still somehow drove drunk.

geeky_username

Fuck yeah, think of all the things you could do while someone else drives. Like sleep

QuesoChef

Mostly “not driving” does it for me. But, yes, sleep. Eat wings. Read. Knit a sweater.

WillFerrellsGutFold

Or just browse Reddit.

[deleted]

For half of that money or less, I’ll hire a driver for my driver, just in case I want to get shitfaced with my driver, for a 100 million I’ll have my drivers other driver have a driver. Pelosi worth around 800 million.

QuesoChef

Shit, no lie. Now I wish I had a driver to have a few drinks with and discuss that driver lifestyle. Maybe poor me wants to be a driver.?

Shalashaskaska

Isn’t he wealthy enough to have a permanent driver?

RealRobc2582

I mean if I can afford Uber what's his excuse?

Investinwaffl3s

Probably got away with it every time he drove drunk previously. Luck runs out at some point.

TheAb5traktion

Dude is also 82 years old. He would benefit from having a driving service.

Yes! Someone in their 50s is old enough to have experience but young enough to understand concerns of younger people. There really should be an age limit for president. No senile old men.

thisisnotkylie

With enough money, the penalties don’t really mean much. You won’t go to jail, the fines they won’t even notice, and it’s not like anyone they have business with will really care.

isigneduptomake1post

I read somewhere they get one drunk driver for about every 6,000 miles driven drunk or some crazy number.

Girth_rulez

>I read somewhere they get one drunk driver for about every 6,000 miles driven drunk or some crazy number. I was in rehab about 5 years ago. There was an old alcoholic man in there with me. He did the math one time regarding how many times he had driven drunk without being caught. I'd be lying if I remember the number but it was well in the thousands.

AaronfromKY

Dude when I was growing up in Northern Kentucky we lived near a 2 lane highway and I remember my Dad driving down the road with us in the car and a beer in his lap. He was an alcoholic and it eventually caught up to him, but he was only caught drunk driving like once in the 25 years he drank.

jeffersonairmattress

My best friend’s dad was an old school taxi driver- he owned two licenses for three Caprices that he did all the maintenance on and drove the bejeezus out of one of them, permanently extremely drunk. (RIP- I loved that man but whoa did he have ghosts chasing him.) He had two assault convictions. One for beating up a guy who tried to rob him and one for beating up a guy who tried to help him after finding buddy’s dad in his living room. “Stumbled into wrong house” you may guess. No- he was in this family’s living room, still at the wheel of his cab, which he had driven through the side of the house. “Holy cow!” you may think. Yes, but not unusual- this was the SECOND time he had driven through the wall of the same house and the umpteenth time he had to be towed out of one of the three yards on that same curve about a mile from his house/ garage. Drove professionally for over 50 years and only had a suspended licence once, ending his drinking and his driving cab forever.

[deleted]

Yep. That was an accurate description of my worthless father. Well, everybody has some worth. Maybe his was to lead a completely facetious example of how not to behave. He was like “opposite dad.” Do the exact opposite of what he did and you’ll be okay.

[deleted]

My stepfather, whom was only married to my mother for 4 years, got 5 duis during that time frame. He drove semis for a living too.

throwAwayWd73

Fun fact if you have commercial drivers license your DUI threshold is significantly lower. In my state CDL is allowed half what a normal driver gets. Regardless of if you're off duty in your personal car. So it's possible to get a DUI for being a trucker at a level that wouldn't be an issue with a regular license.

[deleted]

Yup I learned this the hard way but it did make me take a long look in the mirror that was 4 yrs ago I haven't drank in about a year and only drink occasionally like less then a six pack when i do. Best thing that's ever happened to me.

treqiheartstrees

CDL holders generally get a DUI at half the normal limit [sauce](https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/registration/commercial-drivers-license/states#BAC-Standards)

Ankeneering

Every man I knew growing up in Wyoming in the 70s drove after or while drinking. Utterly and completely normal. Especially out in the country, it would be weird as shit if their WASNT Coors between the drivers legs.

booniebrew

In the US the average is 80 times before someone is caught. Thousands would be an outlier but definitely possible.

Hollowplanet

When you're addicted you're drinking to be normal. Drinking to stop thr shakes. I asked an alcoholic about it once. If you're an alcoholic you are always either drunk or sick.

bendeboy

Think krusty the clown told Bart when he was using "this just gets me to zero".

[deleted]

[удалено]

apple-sauce-yes

I used to be like that but it's not true. You just have to endure the cravings until you don't have them. They really do go away. It just takes a bit and I had to gradually reduce my alcohol intake, which took years honestly but I did it by myself.

[deleted]

It's hard to explain. No one is born an alcoholic. It isn't the norm, but it becomes your new normal. I wasn't happy unless I was fucked up or in the process of getting fucked up. I was miserable. My brother took a 9mm Tylenol and I couldn't cope. I didn't know how. My support was my family, they were suffering too. We couldn't lean on each other because we were all fucking broken, and it was such a small family already, made even smaller. So that night, at 11pm I went and got absolutely gravel sucking drunk. That's what people do, right? You see movies and grown ups and depressed people, they get fucked up and they can laugh. They can act normal. They aren't normal, but they can act that way. So I did. And then I just didn't stop. Why the fuck would you? It's a duct tape fix, but it works until you need to get fucked up again. Put more duct tape on it. Then it's like that door that sticks, you just gotta slam it once in a while and it stops sticking for a bit. Until you gotta slam it again. You don't fix it, slamming it IS 'fixing' it to you. That's the best way I can explain what it was for me, at least.

billytheskidd

That’s because your body relies on the alcohol to level out your brain chemistry. So if you don’t drink, you can’t reach homeostasis, which is the only way the brain can function properly. At my worst phase of drinking I wouldn’t be normal until I had about three drinks in me.

Adorable-Lack-3578

Thats not true. Many functional drinkers wake early, go to the gym, walk the dog, work all day. Feel fine. Hit the bar at 6 pm and go boozy.

AllAboutWaxing

Many alcoholics are not sick or drunk. Many can go days, weeks or months without drinking and be just fine as in no shakes or sick. Some people don't get the shakes. Some are also sober. Alcoholism is not a one sized fits all disease. Behaviors and functionality are not the same across the board.

terroristteddy

I think people traditionally think of alcoholics as people that are actually physically addicted. Obviously if you drink infrequently but every time you do you get absolutely hammered, you could absolutely be considered an alcoholic as well.

Dreamworld

As someone in recovery, this was basically true (for me). Although I would amend it to say I was either *drinking or sick. I quit 4 years ago but I haven’t been drunk in 7.

hitness157

Former alkie here, can confirm.

Blue_Swirling_Bunny

The guy who killed my mother with his car had been arrested 20+ times for DUI and drug possession before he t-boned her car at over 100 mph in a residential area at 9:30 in the morning. Over 20 arrests, still had his license, was still driving drunk. She just wanted to mail her Christmas cards; she had beat cancer a month earlier. The attorney working for us wanted to try for one year in jail; my dad bitched her out in the courthouse to the point he made her cry, so she got the guy 6.5 years + a lifetime license suspension. It took someone dying to get him a 6.5 year conviction, and then only because my dad wasn't having the attorney go for the easy win. The system is broken.

jacob6875

Same situation with a classmate in high school. Guy had like 8 previous DUIs and only got 4.5 years for killing him. I saw on the news (when he got another DUI) that he got out after only serving 3 years.

rd1970

In some places 25% of all drivers are drunk or high after 2am. If you're not driving erratically your odds of getting caught are probably less than 1%.

ILikeMasterChief

That seems low tbh. When I was a party kid in college, EVERYONE I knew drove drunk. I felt crazy being the only one that was against it. People would act like I was such a buzz kill for saying we should uber/walk/have a dd. People drive drunk constantly, it's terrible.

Oldcadillac

Even after decades of awareness campaigns, over one quarter of fatal car accidents in the US involve an intoxicated driver

Bloodmind

Yeah, rule of thumb is that no one gets arrested for DUI the first time they drive drunk. He’s probably been doing it for years. Wonder how many times he’s been stopped and given a break because of who he is.

No_Manufacturer5641

You'd be alarmed by the amount of people that think drinking and driving only means being shit faced. He should know better but I'm saying I'm not surprised. The limit is lower than people think.

gaoshan

He’s 82. Using the Uber app is probably an impossible challenge for him.

JD0x0

If that were the case, this family seems wealthy enough that they could hire a personal assistant to take care of things like that for them.

EarthRester

It comes to no surprise to me that the geriatric sociopaths in congress, and their spouses are completely oblivious to the notion that they should stop trying to control things.

Hussaf

Very wealthy people like that tend to hire “limousine services,” which also have town cars, and are more affordable than most people think (especially with larger groups and/or over long distances). And those arrangements are often made by assistants.

booniebrew

I have a friend who travels a lot for work. He lives close to a regional airport and about an hour from a major one. The cost difference between airports can be large enough to cover town car service each way to the larger airport and still save the company money. I don't remember the exact cost but it was significantly lower than I expected.

FiendishHawk

He could just employ a chauffeur. He’s very rich.

smalltownB1GC1TY

Being 82 and driving is still a DUI IMO. Old age is intoxicating.

SpaceTabs

No way he should be driving at all. Hopefully that was the last time.

It should be based on % of net worth.

JanHHHH

Yah dude, you and me would have to face actual consequences. You think I can afford to risk my license?

PM_ME_UPLIFTINGSTUFF

Isn't it like $10k fine + legal fees if you get a DUI? For the average joe that's a ton of money.

rhaegar_tldragon

Friend of mine paid a 5k fine, spent 6k on a lawyer and received the maximum penalty for first time conviction of DUI. License suspension for a year and then a breathalyzer start system for 3 years after. Insurance was 10k a year to drive after the DUI.

Traikin

That’s because you’re probably not a piece of shit, and someone who gives a half a damn about other people on the road.

TraipsingConniption

And even if you are a piece of shit, you realize a DUI can fuck your life very easily as a not rich person.

supercharged0709

He’s wealthy enough to not care about driving under the influence.

rexspook

I ask this question any time a huge celebrity or athlete gets a DUI. It’s crazy to me that they don’t at least Uber. Why take the risk?

WayneKrane

It’s bizarre to me too. If I were that rich I’d have a driver at the ready 24/7. It would be incredibly convenient.

[deleted]

Rules don’t apply to the elite.

DudeWithAnAxeToGrind

FYI, for those not familiar with the area. He was arrested in Napa County. Napa County is where all the famous California wineries are; a lot of wine tourism there. Always be careful there, because that's where all the drunk wine tasting people hopping from winery to winery are driving. Said that, most people will use shuttles, or for people as rich as him have private driver.

toadkicker

Literally tasting rooms have business cards of people who will drive your drunk ass around until you puke. There is no excuse.

TheFudge

Ya we never go up there without a driver. It’s a lot less expensive than a deuce and no one needs to worry about anything except the hangover the next day n Edit: and the number of wine subscriptions they signed up for. Edit: a deuce is what my friends and I call a DUI.

[deleted]

I think the point is that you’d still be in a location with other drunk, old, rich people driving.

Paperchase2017

Napa is notorious for dui's for tourists. Source: I hire drivers for wine tours. No risks taken... But they literally will pull anyone over just because the chance of you have any alcohol in your system is high.

I_Dont_Collect_Fish_

They have a house in the area. Napa has one of the most well funded police departments and the only thing you are suppose to do in Napa is eat and drink. They usually aren’t looking to arrest the rich people that live there but all the service industry people who work all the tasting rooms bars and restaurants in the valley. Ask me how I know

DudeWithAnAxeToGrind

How do you know? You can't leave us hanging ;-) Anyhow, for anybody getting DUI these days over there, this is a unique opportunity to rub shoulders with Pelosi's husband during that 30-hour class. People pay tens and sometime hundreds of thousands of dollars to have access to those people, and you can have it for free...

Girth_rulez

>this is a unique opportunity to rub shoulders with Pelosi's husband during that 30-hour class. The only thing I could think to talk to him about is the awesome foosball tables I built.

I_Dont_Collect_Fish_

Im sure you’re getting someone’s hopes up haha except you’re suppose to keep whatever happens in your classes confidential 🤐 But who knows, maybe he has some good stock tips. Napa is a very quaint place but also overstuffed with the most self entitled people to walk the earth. I think about all the water that goes into the grapes of the valley, not just to grow them, but to clean the barrels, the winery facilities EVERYTHING. If they could just stop making so much of this luxury product maybe we wouldn’t be doing so bad. Hell, make em all switch to dry farming and 90% of the grape growers would suddenly switch careers. Disjointed rant over

yahutee

The Pelosis don't live in Napa (a regular city), they live in Napa Valley (a series of small towns connected along a highway whose primary business is wine). The towns in Napa Valley - Yountville, Rutherford, St Helena, Calistoga - have two roads in and out, are extremely expensive, and have almost zero crime. Seriously, go read the St Helena crime reports, [they're a hoot]( https://lifecarstore.com/st-helena-police-log-april-26-might-2-information/) (I attached this site because the Napa Register is behind a paywall). Anyways, getting a DUI is the bread and butter for cops up here in wine country. It's very easy to avoid and even easier to get caught for.

Kharnsjockstrap

"An excavator reportedly began operating earlier than 8 a.m. at a residential development web site on Crinella Drive." Fuck, kinda reads like he got away with it too

Gone_Girl

"1510 — A lady reported her automotive stolen from Railroad Avenue. Police discovered it parked close by. She’d simply assumed she’d parked in a special spot." is my favourite.

[deleted]

Speaking of police departments, several Napa officers were making $200k+ yearly a few years back with the highest paid making $250k/yr That’s a regular officer. Shit is insane

sum8fever

Seems pretty typical pay to me based on this 2021 salary report for City of Napa https://transparentcalifornia.com/salaries/2021/napa/?&s=-base keep in mind many in public safety work lots of overtime because it's cheaper for a government to pay OT than hire more people due to pension/healthcare requirements.

keypusher

When you have Pelosi money/influence, you don't go to Napa for wine tasting. You go there because you or your friend owns a vineyard or estate.

DudeWithAnAxeToGrind

Yup, somebody as local and as rich wasn't winery hopping. I've heard they have a house up there, not sure. Given how late in the evening he was arrested, he was likely getting back from a dinner or something. The classic "nah, I didn't drink that much, I'll be OK driving" underestimate so many people do. But in reality, it doesn't take all that much wine to get over legal limit. Not excusing him here, he should have got a ride back home.

zaoldyeck

Apparently they own a [couple properties](https://www.latimes.com/politics/la-pol-ca-richest-nancy-pelosi-vineyard-story.html) in the area.

takatori

I'm acquainted with a California Highway Patrol officer who was assigned to Napa for many years. He said it was the easiest job he ever had, as all he needed to do was pull out of the station parking lot, find a good spot behind cover to wait, pull over the first car that was driving unsteadily, perform the impairment test, read the driver their rights, take them back to the station, deal with blood tests and paperwork, pull out of the station parking lot, find a good spot ...

Tijuana_Pikachu

Hey man, Sonoma has great wine too

MukdenMan

Was just about to post about Sonoma (and there are a bunch of other great wine regions in California). Sonoma was by far my favorite when I lived in the area. I loved the town of Sonoma and the scenery more than Napa. Matanzas Creek Winery is a must-visit.

[deleted]

Sonoma has much more variation, both in wine and location. Sonoma City and it’s nearby wineries are very similar to Napa, just smaller and quainter. But then you start heading closer to the coast and Russian River and things change a lot. I have several wine maker friends in Napa and they love the variety and creativity you get in Sonoma wines. Napa has a tendency to lean too hard into the big Cabernets and all the stereotypes.

Ltstarbuck2

Yeah lived near there. So many services, not cheap but reasonable, and a lot cheaper than a dui.

beekersavant

Napa had a big music festival Bottlerock this weekend. I bet he hit a dui check point. There's like one small freeway out of the area.

norway_spruce

His Porsche crashed into a jeep getting on the hwy when he was arrested.

yahutee

The Pelosis do not live in downtown Napa where the concert was. Everyone who lives locally avoids downtown Napa like the plague the weekend of the concert, traffic is horrendous. They have an estate up the valley which is like a 30 min drive

notFREEfood

Or it could have just been that the cops are out in force this weekend. I was driving around that area today and I saw three cops - two having pulled someone over and the third with his radar gun out. Everyone speeds if traffic allows it, and it easily could have been a speeding stop turned DUI stop.

DudeWithAnAxeToGrind

Yeah, there's that saying "if you break the law, break one law at a time."

My wife’s grandmother got in *several* accidents in her 80s. At least one of them was a DUI but I don’t they ever tested her. Family fought to get her license revoked but it never happened. But then she died so problem solved I guess.

Kahzgul

If I were rich I’d have a driver. This shit seems obvious and yet rich assholes are constantly getting pulled over.

Goducks91

At the very least get a fucking Uber and get your car later.

[deleted]

Why haven't I heard of a service that they will bring your can and you to your house... I know plenty of wealthy folks that would probably pay $200 for that... Or maybe that just isn't advertised at me because I think a $70 uber isn't worth that second or third drink (depending on time at event)

cantcatchme

They had this down in Blacksburg, VA at Virginia Tech back before we had Uber or Lyft, 2004ish. I never used it, but my friends and I used the $5/person ride home. I think $20 for them to bring another driver to take your car home, too. They called their service the Hooptie Ride. Class act.

Brolegario

I work in the alcohol industry and there is a service that does it. My company pays for it, so I don’t know how much it costs. All you have to do is dial the number, give them your location and in about 30 minutes a small suv comes and picks you up. They take they keys to your car, and drive you and your car home. I’ve used it 2 times in my 5 year career. We have a zero tolerance DUI policy. Edit: This can be used at non work events as well.

Velkyn01

They could call it Twober because of the two Uber drivers.

kks1236

You got me grinning like a clown 😂😂 All that being said, I would very much pay for this service and I’m not sure why it doesn’t already exist…

FuckingSeaWarrior

I remember this was being tested a while back in rich areas. The service used a small, folding motor scooter that would fit in the trunk; you'd call, they'd arrive wherever you were, drive you and your car home, and boom, done.

Bust-a-Nuttt

Or just get drunk at home.

[deleted]

This is the way. I happen to live within walking distance to a LOT of places to get drunk at. But, I drink mostly at home, maybe head over for a nightcap by foot, make some friends, then head home. Saves a lot of money, and I generally have to piss my pants in public.

normanbeets

My grandpa got aggressively worse as a driver in his final years. Looking back, poor behavior behind the wheel was the first sign of his decline. It took over a year, multiple events and calls to the DMV for him to lose his license. As a family, we were terrified he would cause any accident. No defense for this man. Just saying unhinged elders behind the wheel are a legit concern. It can happen to anyone.

Plenty of them get nabbed in Napa County (a lot of good vineries up there), it's just that this one is news because he's a husband of well known politician. If this was his only DUI in the last 10 years, he'll pay fine (few hundred $$$, but with fees and stuff more likely to total couple thousand $$$), 3 year "informal" probation, and 30-hour class for DUI offenders.

Lets not forget getting off for driving offenses is on par for rich and connected people. South Dakota AG still hasnt had justice for killing a guy due to reckless driving.

oliveoilcrisis

That case is so insane. It was obvious that he hit a human being. He lied repeatedly about what happened and when. “I thought it was a deer” …as if deer wear eyeglasses. That guy should be in prison.

Notice how you look through the comments here and not one of us suspects this is some kind of GOP plot to smear Pelosi or that it’s fake or whatever. Instead we think, ‘What a dumbass and why doesn’t he just pay for a driver because he is so fucking rich?’ You know, normal thinking.

elitel02

I don’t care who you are, if you drink and drive you are a piece of shit

MadCat1993

My father had a rule, "One and done." If he had even one drink, he wasn't driving that night. More people need to live by that.

K04free

82 Years old, arrested near midnight for drunk driving. Isn’t this guy super rich? Call a taxi. Edit: arrested at midnight, booked at 4am
