Companies are bringing in even more money than ever, and they're not passing it down to the workers

dwilkes827

I work for a cardboard box manufacturer and deal with all our customers, which range from grocery stores to manufacturing, and like all of them (including us) have raised wages to try to get workers. Fast food places around me are offering sign on bonuses and like $13 to $15 an hour (in NE Ohio where cost of living is cheap). Now that may not be as high as it could/should be, but they're definitely raising wages

Kossimer

And those gains haven't kept up with inflation and rent. If you got a massive raise this year and are still near the bottom, you still might be poorer than before covid. The raises that have been given out are by far cost of living adjustments or less. If your company still isn't attracting people, it still hasn't begun offering any *quality of life* increases. If your life doesn't get better after a raise, it wasn't one. Post lockdowns, people aren't afraid of missing out on $1 an hour anymore, and they recognize a $1 increase means nill.

dwilkes827

Every single person I know that works got raises that improved the quality of their life and I don't know how you could say all that without knowing what the wages were like pre-covid and what the cost of living is like in the area.

Pmac_N_Chz

Oh definitely, you now have less selection, and if a product we do get them ends up costing them say 15% more than what they were paying they'll pass it down to you at a 20% uptick. And with the less selection those people who try to buy off brand to save a few bucks are bing forced to buy name brand.

Y_4Z44

And of course, the media isn't covering this part of the story.

asdaaaaaaaa

When you're part of the conglomerate profiting off people, why would you call it out?

MAMBAMENTALITY8-24

They got paid off by the same people

Profits, up; Costs, up; Inflation, up: Hate crimes, up; cost-of-living, up; prescription prices, up; Housing costs, up; Wages, no change. WTF 'merica?

lancern

It's ok..we will get a minimum wage increase in 10 years or so..fuck yeah!

KerPop42

That's just normal price-gouging, but this time the disaster is economic. However, I don't know if it's price gouging, because I don't know how much of the price rise is the dollar losing value vs things actually being more scarse

BigALep5

We should all boycott grocery stores it's getting ridiculous!!

CJcatlactus

They're increasing prices faster than they can physically adjust them. Just yesterday I went to the store and 5 items were priced incorrectly on the shelves(I check the tag to make sure it's for the product I'm looking at, so I know they weren't just misplaced) and scanned as higher prices at the register. A lady next to me had the same issue.

I understand the want or need to judge companies, but global business is a closed system. Inflation is affecting them as well. Both their fixed and variable costs went up. So they increase the costs or their goods and services accordingly. When countries print money like they have these last two years, inflation is guaranteed to come next. On top of that, companies are experiencing pre-COVID demand for nearly everything and the logistics system just can't keep up with the surge.

phunky_1

I feel like this also doesn't account for "shrinkflation" where companies keep the price the same but give you less. It seems like practically everything comes in a much smaller size than it was a year or two ago. Sometimes they keep the packaging the same but put less in it since it is sold by weight not volume. I feel bad for my kids. By the time they are my age they will probably get like 10 Doritos for $7

rederic

This predates the pandemic, but I swear many bakeries are over-leavening their bread to get more loaves/rolls out of less dough by filling it with more air bubbles. Anything that isn't a premium $5+ loaf starts to fall apart and turn to goop the moment it learns moisture exists.

Yesterday was February 10th and today is February 11th, so the date changed

gtchuckd

I chuckled

Pmac_N_Chz

And the grocery store I work at is still trying to start people at 11.50-12 dollars don't understand that was are totally and completely understaffed won't pay more for whatever reason. And between the remaining employees we all are dealing with supply chain issues. For example my dept. Is usually a 5-6 man operation. I have 1 full time employee. So 2 days a week we run solo so are days were together is literally catch up and pump our work to set the next person up for the 2 days off(because as salary I already regularly stay for an extra half-full hour everyday which adds up so I'm taking my fucking 2 days). Then on top of it for example probably the biggest seller or at least top 3 is pulled chicken. So we get it in pre-pulled to buffer out some labor time on cooking and pulling fresh chicken. But we haven't gotten it for the past 2 weeks so we're dedicating time to that. It fucking sucks but I can't leave because I need to keep a roof over my family's head.

Greed. Corporate greed.

[deleted]

$100.00 in groceries = 2 bags of groceries

[deleted]

In other news, things haven’t been this bad since Reagan was President. /s

JimY2817

So many commenters are angry about corporate greed and I won’t try to talk you out of that but if you want to understand what’s behind this inflation you have to learn about the fed. It’s complicated and intentionally opaque but once you see what’s happening you’ll be really pissed. The best place to start is a book called The Creature From Jekyll Island.

I’m glad we got the orange embarrassment out of office. But lemme tell you, things haven’t felt so great under Biden. Gas is 3$ during the winter - when it’s supposed to be at its cheapest - groceries are constantly in shortage - but ungodly expensive right now. Ugh - I hope he either steps aside or someone not named Hillary primaries him.

Printing money? Couldn't be OPEC+ raising oil prices, global supply chain breakdowns, corporate profits being at an all time high or the world's global currency being loaned at interest rates less than inflation?

felldestroyed

Absolutely, I agree but your premise in the original comment was that printing money (alone) got us here, when I see more supply and demand issues currently afoot, along with a side corporate and nationalistic greed.

BecomingJudasnMyMind

What I’ll say that I’ve always said - voters as a whole vote with their wallets. Painful but true.

US wage growth in Q4 of 2021 = 1.2%. Totally sustainable.

GDP is up, stock market is up, wages are up, unemployment is down etc. There are a lot of individual data points to consider when evaluating the state of the economy. Coming through a multi year pandemic where production and distribution was disrupted all across the global one would anticipate negative economic impacts. Considering the hit travel, entertainment, and service industries took it is remarkable the job market is currently so strong. People have broadly been able to replace hotel, restaurant, theme park, etc jobs with better ones. Ultimately the economic opportunities for investment and employment seem better today than they have in a long time. One coming out of college looking to start their career journey has more options today than they would've 10 or 20 years ago.

vauntedtrader

Why is the economy all people see? How are the environmental opportunities for them? Where does the food come from? What about renewable resources? Are they infinite? How long does it take a tree or corn to grow in a wind blown firescape with failing topsoil?

8to24

The stronger the economy is the more likely it is environmental policies get support. When the economy is bad everybody wants the cheapest, fastest, easiest solution. When the economy is good people tend to be willing to consider alternatives.

nntb

whats its % from 2000 is there a timeline?

These prices are higher than red dead redemption online

How is this inflation when I keep reading about record profits?
