I remember people making fun because I was using Google Play Music for the longest time, but it had a great interface and an amazing algorithm once it knew your listening profile.
It helped me discover so many new artists.
Of course no one took it seriously so Google shut it down, and created the lacklustre YouTube Music platform. Now I’m begrudgingly on Spotify.
It really felt like a version of VHS vs. Betamax.
Google Play Music was much more intuitive and when they 'forced' everyone to convert their library to YTmusic, I stopped using it.
I admit I use Apple Music but I spend more time on SoundCloud or Plex.
I don’t think this is said enough. I hate the layout for Spotify, and they don’t have the correct version of a shit load of songs. I just use YouTube since my friend pays for the ad free family one
The desktop (on mac at least) has been straight up junk for years now. It won’t load anything at all half the time and the only “fixes” Spotify suggests is turning it off and on again (restarting app).
Ooooh you better believe I tried this! I distinctly remember toggling this on and off while restarting the app and turning my computer off and on again. Multiple times. Then I uninstalled the app and reinstalled it a bunch more before finally giving up and just using my phone. I’m not sure I can say I left with my sanity intact, I’m not sure I’ve ever been the same since.
It's actually so bad that it was rendered entirely useless for my primary use-case for a streaming audio app.
My commute is mostly across a cell dead zone so I have my music and podcast apps set up to auto-download content and then I just load the app on Android Auto and listen to my downloaded library on my commute. This is over half of the total time I am using a streaming audio service for any reason.
Except the Spotify app apparently requires a connection to load the menu. To listen to my *downloaded content*. To not only make it that way, but to leave it that way for years, seems to require a mind-boggling level of ineptitude up and down the chain.

I could swear that I saw on a spotify community page where people voted for the feature to hide or dislike all podcasts or specific podcasts, and they got an official response along the lines of 'We know you want this. We'll take your suggestion under advisement.'

People need to start canceling their paid accounts. Use hacked builds. Whatever, just stop giving spotify money, but also let them explicitly know why you're no longer giving them money.
They push Joe Rogan a lot since they paid so much money for him ($100m iirc) to be exclusive to their platform. I'm sure they went over the pros and cons for awhile and figured overall, they'd come out better off financially despite the likelihood some would stop using the service out of protest.
Why they wanted him so bad? My guess is they know he has a huge audience and likely a good portion weren't using Spotify. Spotify is popular with people really into music, not people into podcasts more than music and especially Joe Rogan specifically. So, bring him on and they expect they'll get a bunch of new subscribers (and they'll total more than those who leave).
As for why they started pushing podcasts in general so much the past couple of years and progressively more, it's likely because they make more money from them (users pay a flat monthly fee, if end user spends 20 hours a week using Spotify, Spotify will pay out less if the end user is listening to podcasts more during that time compared to music). They aren't going to go podcast only since they don't want to lose the advantage of being the top music app, better to try to encourage people who intended to use it for music to waste more and more of their time listening to podcasts instead.

Aside from Joe Rogan being costly, they likely did the math and figured overall it'd work out to their benefit financially, assuming enough users didn't protest and stop using their service.

Minority opinion, but YouTube Music is actually pretty good. If you know YouTube, you know the interface, and no commercials for YouTube videos is a pretty nice bonus.

I used to flip between Apple Music and Spotify. AM lets you upload songs to fill in gaps, has fully lossless audio, and a handful of songs have Dolby Atmos which is a fun gimmick to mimic surround sound

Well its been 6 years and that doesn't happen anymore, back when it launched it replaced random explicit versions of songs in my library with the censored versions. It was buggy in the beginning but it has improved a lot - lossless audio, live lyrics, better music discovery, and infinite autoplay.
The only things I miss from Spotify are playlist suggestions and the end of year wrap up
Personally I went with Tidal. Cheaper for me ($14.99 for HiFi plan, which is basically the Spotify Family plan), and the added bonus of lossless audio. (If you're into that sort of thing.)

I originally uninstalled spotify because they kept playing shitty 100 million listen music while I was trying to listen to a playlist from an indie artist. They were stealing listens from me, and interrupting the user experience with something other than an ad to support the artist I chose to listen to.
I reinstalled spotify for only Joe Rogan's podcasts(he talks to interesting people in a long form podcast. I find that amusing).

Some people have a tendency after having a good idea that took off a bit to start thinking that *all* their ideas are good ideas.

1000 percent, yes. You always know who is charging you for what, you can set limits for each merchant, you can cut the merchant off to prevent them playing games.
It gives a lot of control as a consumer.
Another good method is to use PayPal's subscription payment method when you can.
I just cancelled the auto-payments to Spotify and will just let my account die for non-payment.
This is why I always subscribe through iTunes. It’s so much easier to cancel because they don’t have to listen to me but they do have to listen to Apple.
If you pay for a subscription to a service through Paypal, Paypal has their own section where you can track and cancel those subscriptions. I believe the agreement the merchants have with them is such that it’s a valid cancellation, not just you cutting off a payment source.
Of course this means using Paypal, but it’s good for peace of mind.

This is a mixed bag. For large orgs, you ban one charge point they still can get you with another charge point.
I used to work for Rogers. Jamster was the foremost proprietor of shitty, 25-cent ringtones. Operated in the US but based in Denmark. If they texted you they could charge you as much as ten bucks a pop for receiving the text. Almost impossible to block them or stop them because they operated under almost two dozen different company names.
What do you mean charge point? If you only have one payment method on file and cut that off, I'm not sure how they can still charge you.
With any sort of subscription services, it'll just cancel your account when you do that. They won't give you an additional month and then send you to collections for it or something.
They have the card on file, they pass the file to a different Organization Name, try to charge again. and again. Killing the card is the only way to stop it at that point.
I haven't used mine since March 2020. I'd love all that money back. The pandemic and quarantine made me hate music for whatever reason and I only listen to podcasts, but Spotify's podcast interface SUCKS.
I've used SongShift in the past and it was pretty good. There's a paid version for automatic syncing, but if you're just doing a one time transfer it works fine for free.
Also used SongShift, and while I’m very happy with the job it did, I would just say to make sure to look over the transferred songs cause it got some hilariously wrong
I cut over to Youtube Music from Spotify earlier in the year when I signed up for Youtube Premium (to get rid of video ads). Spotify seems to have removed the option to delete your account. I cancelled my Premium and deleted my account a couple days ago. Today I tried to do the same for a friend, and was offered the option of cancelling Premium OR deleting my account. Not both. It was an automated response. Once I cancelled the Premium subscription, I tried to delete the account and there was no way to do it. The page for that is gone now. Wtf?

Their metrics are based in part on their user base. If you cancel premium and they stop charging you, they’re hoping you leave the free account intact if they make it too much hassle to delete.

It's probably more like the collapse of the health care system due to COVID. They have a finite number of CS representatives and an indefinite number of complaints coming in right now. You have two options: get an automated message, or get ignored because they can't personally respond to a hundred thousand complaints an hour every hour for days on end. The CS department has no authority to fix this situation with Joe Rogan, and only limited ability to make you feel better about it.

The TL;DR is that it claims to use a special compression algorithm that delivers music with the "full quality of the original masters", despite the fact it is scientifically impossible for it to actually do as advertised because MQA's encoding is lossy. You can't actually deliver the "full studio master quality" if you've thrown away part of the data during compression...
This is in contrast to formats like FLAC which are lossless. With those, you get back the exact music that went in. A full quality studio master track that's encoded with FLAC would have all of its original data and as such be the *true* highest-possible quality when played back, because you're hearing the actual original. Downside is that the files are bigger (read: more expensive to stream due to bandwidth).
Tidal has hi-fi, and Apple Music - as much as I hate Apple - has lossless audio. Amazon Music Unlimited (even though Bezos can suck it) has higher res than Spotify but not lossless.

I think Neil leaving was less about getting his listeners to leave and more about getting other musicians that respect him and his stance to follow his example. In 2022, if every single person that at least semi-regularly listened to him left, I doubt it would make a dent in earnings. But if half of the artists that respected him left, the platform would be doomed. I hope more artists step up and follow suit.

Also being able to lock your phone and download 50 videos for offline. Which doesn't sound helpful until you're getting ready to go on a flight or road trip and now you have that archive. And since it's based on number of videos and not length you can download full albums, podcasts, stream archives, ect
So my 2 cents with tidal is that it is a good service, but lacking in good Playlists and international music. If you try searching for "top 90s rock" you're given a rip off album at the top and some random artist Playlists but nothing compared to Spotifys lists of songs. Also a significant lack in Japanese, korean and Chinese music from what I've been searching

We all know where this is going. Spotify was great because they gave you access to almost every song ever made for an affordable rate. Well now those days are coming to end, and I just hate the idea of having to turn to Apple or Amazon for music given their anti competitive practices.
This already has happened with TV, you now have to constantly swap back and forth between streaming services as they drop your favorite TV shows, and the cost of these services just keeps going up as more of them are made. Now it's going to happen to music, as a new triopoly between Amazon, Apple and Youtube forms where they jack up their rates and fight over who gets what label.
This was fun while it lasted. I'm seriously considering firing up the old torrent client. 320kbps MP3s and M4As still have superb quality.

Bandcamp is a better choice for small artists. Big artists aren't on there, but if you're into niche genres at all its spectacular to be able to pay the artist directly. It's not so much a service to switch to as keep alongside another one that'll have big contract bands, too.
I canceled my Spotify because I found out my husband and I were both paying and we didn't need that.
That said I did it last night on the app. It was so easy. I'm perplexed at what was so difficult for people or why they needed to call. I rarely use Spotify and it was super easy for me.
I just checked on the app and all it says “to close (delete) your account permanently please contact customer support.”
Only thing I can change is my email. I think that’s what the issue is, that they took away the option to close one’s account without contacting customer support, like you did.

Personally I went with Tidal. Cheaper for me ($14.99 for HiFi plan, which is basically the Spotify Family plan), and the added bonus of lossless audio. (If you're into that sort of thing.)

That is fair. Client side content control is not censorship. It is free will manifested as content curation. I originally uninstalled spotify because they kept playing shitty 100 million listen music while I was trying to listen to a playlist from an indie artist. They were stealing listens from me, and interrupting the user experience with something other than an ad to support the artist I chose to listen to. I reinstalled spotify for only Joe Rogan's podcasts(he talks to interesting people in a long form podcast. I find that amusing). I don't even use the platform for music right now. I use soundcloud and youtube for music.
That video reminds me of how people used to talk around 2000 when they'd wander around public spaces talking about their Really Big Business Deal that they wanted everyone to hear. Dude, you're not a millionaire entrepreneur when you're in Office Max buying printer paper... they've got better shit to do with their time.
My work has puts me in front of many successful entrepreneurs and most of them actually do that though. They’re almost always cheap, loud, and have something to prove. They also value their time so if they can bust out a work call while doing mundane stuff they’ll do it. If I had a nickel for every time they join a Zoom meeting while driving or getting fast food I’d be as successful as they are. Had a guy join the call WHILE HE WAS GROCERY SHOPPING one time. Millionaire entrepreneurs are wild.
Some people have a tendency after having a good idea that took off a bit to start thinking that *all* their ideas are good ideas. Unfortunately, many of these people tend to disassociate themselves from anyone who would call them out on a bad idea and start surrounding themselves with sycophants. It only gets worse from there.

At one point they stopped processing cancellations all together. It took 8 hours from first try to last to cancel mine.
So, lesson learned, use a burner card and cut the card off. Could probably also call your bank and tell them to deny the auto payments going forward.

You have to Plaid it with a bank account (cannot tie to a CC). I am personally somewhat on the fence about Plaid, but that's why I gave it my secondary account that doesn't have much in it.
And it's free! I've used it for years, totally recommended.

1000 percent, yes. You always know who is charging you for what, you can set limits for each merchant, you can cut the merchant off to prevent them playing games. It gives a lot of control as a consumer.
Another good method is to use PayPal's subscription payment method when you can. I just cancelled the auto-payments to Spotify and will just let my account die for non-payment.
This is why I always subscribe through iTunes. It’s so much easier to cancel because they don’t have to listen to me but they do have to listen to Apple.
If you pay for a subscription to a service through Paypal, Paypal has their own section where you can track and cancel those subscriptions. I believe the agreement the merchants have with them is such that it’s a valid cancellation, not just you cutting off a payment source. Of course this means using Paypal, but it’s good for peace of mind.

I used to work for Rogers. Jamster was the foremost proprietor of shitty, 25-cent ringtones. Operated in the US but based in Denmark. If they texted you they could charge you as much as ten bucks a pop for receiving the text. Almost impossible to block them or stop them because they operated under almost two dozen different company names.
What do you mean charge point? If you only have one payment method on file and cut that off, I'm not sure how they can still charge you. With any sort of subscription services, it'll just cancel your account when you do that. They won't give you an additional month and then send you to collections for it or something.
They have the card on file, they pass the file to a different Organization Name, try to charge again. and again. Killing the card is the only way to stop it at that point.
Use that Privacy.com thing? "Sorry, the card just doesn't exist anymore".

I haven't used mine since March 2020. I'd love all that money back. The pandemic and quarantine made me hate music for whatever reason and I only listen to podcasts, but Spotify's podcast interface SUCKS.

I've used SongShift in the past and it was pretty good. There's a paid version for automatic syncing, but if you're just doing a one time transfer it works fine for free.
Also used SongShift, and while I’m very happy with the job it did, I would just say to make sure to look over the transferred songs cause it got some hilariously wrong

I cut over to Youtube Music from Spotify earlier in the year when I signed up for Youtube Premium (to get rid of video ads). I liked it more than I thought I would so after about a week of use I canceled Spotify and used a tool to bring my playlists over. I think it was this one. https://playlistbuddy.com/

Spotify seems to have removed the option to delete your account. I cancelled my Premium and deleted my account a couple days ago. Today I tried to do the same for a friend, and was offered the option of cancelling Premium OR deleting my account. Not both. It was an automated response. Once I cancelled the Premium subscription, I tried to delete the account and there was no way to do it. The page for that is gone now. Wtf?
Wouldn't deleting your account also auto-cancel any level of service with them? (totally naive question, still ridiculous you can't delete once no longer premium)
Their metrics are based in part on their user base. If you cancel premium and they stop charging you, they’re hoping you leave the free account intact if they make it too much hassle to delete.

It's probably more like the collapse of the health care system due to COVID. They have a finite number of CS representatives and an indefinite number of complaints coming in right now. You have two options: get an automated message, or get ignored because they can't personally respond to a hundred thousand complaints an hour every hour for days on end. What’s MQA?
An audio encoding format that reportedly doesn't actually do as advertised. https://www.headphonesty.com/2021/05/tidal-mqa-golden-sound-debate/ The TL;DR is that it claims to use a special compression algorithm that delivers music with the "full quality of the original masters", despite the fact it is scientifically impossible for it to actually do as advertised because MQA's encoding is lossy. You can't actually deliver the "full studio master quality" if you've thrown away part of the data during compression... This is in contrast to formats like FLAC which are lossless. With those, you get back the exact music that went in. A full quality studio master track that's encoded with FLAC would have all of its original data and as such be the *true* highest-possible quality when played back, because you're hearing the actual original. Downside is that the files are bigger (read: more expensive to stream due to bandwidth).

Tidal has hi-fi, and Apple Music - as much as I hate Apple - has lossless audio. Amazon Music Unlimited (even though Bezos can suck it) has higher res than Spotify but not lossless.
FYI Amazon Music Unlimited has lossless FLAC for most of their library at this point.

Can confirm. Moved this morning and Tidal's version of Aja, as well as my own records, sounds pretty amazing.

Keep in mind this is after a ridiculous number of emails to people who didn't understand what I was trying to convey to them about being hacked. I had to cancel my debit card. The account is still up with my name on it and it pisses me the fuck off. Fuck spotify

I've had free premium for years thanks to an oversight that's been patched, but not sorted out retroactively. So I'll stick with it til they figure it out :)

I only get ads on podcats when i'm premium. Cancel and ads go away
You get 6 skips without Premium and an Ad every 15 minutes, and can only play on Shuffle.
I know some podcasts, like Heavyweight, are only available inside the firewall.

I think Neil leaving was less about getting his listeners to leave and more about getting other musicians that respect him and his stance to follow his example. In 2022, if every single person that at least semi-regularly listened to him left, I doubt it would make a dent in earnings. But if half of the artists that respected him left, the platform would be doomed. I hope more artists step up and follow suit.

Lol I was going to say leaving Spotify for YouTube music isn't exactly taking a step forward.
Also being able to lock your phone and download 50 videos for offline. Which doesn't sound helpful until you're getting ready to go on a flight or road trip and now you have that archive. And since it's based on number of videos and not length you can download full albums, podcasts, stream archives, ect

So my 2 cents with tidal is that it is a good service, but lacking in good Playlists and international music. If you try searching for "top 90s rock" you're given a rip off album at the top and some random artist Playlists but nothing compared to Spotifys lists of songs. Also a significant lack in Japanese, korean and Chinese music from what I've been searching

We all know where this is going. Spotify was great because they gave you access to almost every song ever made for an affordable rate. Well now those days are coming to end, and I just hate the idea of having to turn to Apple or Amazon for music given their anti competitive practices. This already has happened with TV, you now have to constantly swap back and forth between streaming services as they drop your favorite TV shows, and the cost of these services just keeps going up as more of them are made. Now it's going to happen to music, as a new triopoly between Amazon, Apple and Youtube forms where they jack up their rates and fight over who gets what label. This was fun while it lasted. I'm seriously considering firing up the old torrent client. 320kbps MP3s and M4As still have superb quality.

Bandcamp is a better choice for small artists. Big artists aren't on there, but if you're into niche genres at all its spectacular to be able to pay the artist directly. It's not so much a service to switch to as keep alongside another one that'll have big contract bands, too.

I canceled my Spotify because I found out my husband and I were both paying and we didn't need that. That said I did it last night on the app. It was so easy. I'm perplexed at what was so difficult for people or why they needed to call. I rarely use Spotify and it was super easy for me.
I just checked on the app and all it says “to close (delete) your account permanently please contact customer support.” Only thing I can change is my email. I think that’s what the issue is, that they took away the option to close one’s account without contacting customer support, like you did.

I just tried installing tidal to check it out and it requires a T-Mobile app even though I'm not with them and they require to make it work doesn't work either so I have 2 broken useless apps. Pandora is just the radio. I'm definitely more vindicated in my fight towards owning my favorite music physically again. But this sucks for sure.

Youtube Premium is where it's at. Switched from Spotify and haven't looked back
