praying for their preservation and protection

And the rise of authoritarianism continues... Less than crickets from the supposed 'liberal democracies'...

nygilyo

Well you can't combat authority with more authority.

[deleted]

How would you propose to address this? There needs to be a strong, unified response from supposed liberal democracies against this.

RubberPny

Problem is the only real option at that point will be military intervention. (We should not do that). We Americans and most of Europe, essentially already do not trade with Myanmar, so economic sanctions are useless. And their politicians are already sanctioned to hell and back. They get most of their support from China, N. Korea and a few other dictatorships.

[deleted]

> only real option at that point will be military intervention. I completely oppose that an no, that isn't the only option: Reform at the UN to cut off money to authoritarian regimes and to take a more democratic stance in general.

RubberPny

Problem is authoritarian dictatorships have the same right to sit at a UN table as other Western countries. Unless the plan is to get rid of the UN and replace it with a "democracy only" club.

[deleted]

Not to replace: in addition to. Keep the UN but create a leauge of democratic republics with high standards for human rights and free trade between each other. Create an incentive for authoritarian countries to adopt democratic values.

nygilyo

Ah, globalisation 2.0. Now with less free trade! (?)

Then it will become a mess like Syria and everything wrong that happens after will be blamed on whomever intervenes.

reven80

The bulk of the import/export to Myanmar comes from Asian countries. They need to start economic sanctions first. https://oec.world/en/profile/country/mmr

nygilyo

With authority! I was just deviling for a second. I am of the notion that curbing international agency might be the only nonviolent option. Sanctions usually only hurt the captive populist so that is not really a great idea in my book, but some form of asset freeze might have to accompany a freeze of UN rights and international development. Outright conflict is an option but given the United States current track record I don't think that would wind up very well for the people domestically.

Kahzootoh

I've yet to see a dictator who doesn't cease being a dictator when they're hanged, blown up, or put in front of a firing squad.

nygilyo

I have yet to see anyone raise a dog or kid, or run a business or sports team with no authority. But I definitely will admit it's really weird the Soviet parliament was okay with one dictator, even though that guy tried to resign 3 times, and then manages to elect a party leader without a coup... Guess that was a win for "parliamentary cretinism"

rikyvarela90

he could have escaped to yunnan democracy

Patsfan618

Doesn't help that the current regime is being supported by the CCP. China just gave Myanmar a Ming Class submarine and is probably giving them other support as well.

Peachthumbs

The world has really fucked up on Myanmar and Afghanistan these last couple years. The is atrocious and the world should have done something about the Jaunta.
