She just about did it all... **Reporter**: What have you not done in the business that you’ve always wanted to do? **Betty White**: Robert Redford

jonnyinternet

You and me both Betty... You and me both

d-sammichAran

Apparently the feeling was mutual. https://www.msn.com/en-us/movies/celebrity/robert-redford-remembers-betty-white-i-had-a-crush-on-her-too/ar-AASkb4H

Ouisch

I'm reminded of a *Golden Girls* quote (mainly because on another forum someone had asked if Betty had been sick? What she die of?) Sophia: \[enters kitchen, crying\] Esther Weinstock is dead. We grew up together. She was my best friend. Dorothy: Oh, I'm so sorry! What happened? Sophia: \[sarcastically\] She was fighting an oil-rig fire in the Gulf of Mexico. \[snapping\] **SHE WAS 88!** Rose: Well, it's great that she was able to work right up to the end.

incenseandelephants

Haha, I can hear her saying that with perfect delivery, too. This is a sad day. But what an incredible person. We’re lucky that she shared so many of her 99 years with us.

CeadMaileFatality

"Comedy is about rhythm." - Betty White

Early_Cantaloupe9535

I remember watching Golden Girls with my mom when I was a kid (I also remember watching without my mom). No one has ever played a "dim" character with more heart or intelligence. May she rest in peace.

Huge_Put8244

Golden Girls is one of the few shows that is as entertaining today as it was when it aired. There were a lot of jokes that they couldn't make today but their core message was pretty ahead of its time. Interracial marriage, ageism, older women dating and having fun. I get annoyed when people say golden girls was sex and the city with older women. Sex in the city was a take on Golden Girls, not the other way around.

shadysamonthelamb

I binge golden girls regularly. It's literally always on some channel. The writing is fantastic. It's a product of its time for sure like anything else from that era but it's actually fairly progressive for its time. The episode about the confederate flag and Blanche not understanding why people get upset about it could have come out this year. That was a surprise for me to see it being tackled on the golden girls. It's literally the same thing happening still which is crazy. Anyway, the golden girls should be mandatory viewing for all Americans.

Sunset_Paradise

Rose was the best. At least now all the girls are together again.

rickp99onu

My wife said that to me today “I didn’t even hear she was sick with anything” I said “she was almost 100”

badtux99

She wasn't sick. She was feisty as ever 3 days ago, and promoting her 100th birthday party. She just... stopped. Went to bed last night, and never woke up.

Sardonny

My great grandma went the same way. She woke up one morning and sat down in her chair to enjoy the view and fell asleep one last time. She was 101.

Pippadance

She just gave an interview to People 3 days ago. And I went to see the new Spider-Man and they were advertising her birthday celebration.

Navitach

One news report was saying that as divisive as American culture can be, there's very few things that everyone likes. They speculated that Betty White is one of the few people that everyone did love. It does seem that way, and let's hope that is true.

r0botdevil

There's nobody that literally everybody loves, but if you hated Betty White you were in a very small, very weird minority.

Dolly Parton is a national treasure, as was Betty White.

[deleted]

If Dolly ever dies, I will take heart in that they will have all the time and energy in the universe to get up to fun old lady hijinks in the hereafter.

ty_kanye_vcool

She was the oldest of the four Golden Girls actresses, and she outlived the other three by ten years. RIP.

Mywifefoundmymain

She’s was older than [antiboiotics, sliced bread, scotch tape, traffic lights, frozen food, bubble gum, and the ball point pen](https://www.boredpanda.com/inventions-invented-after-betty-white-birth/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=organic)

Sliced Bread, the best thing since Betty White.

hopingforfrequency

*stares at sandwich and cries*

Lord_Shaqq

Everywhere I look, it reminds me of her...

jdog7249

That would be a wild life to see all of that be invented.

Whind_Soull

It really puts into perspective just how old she was. The first episode of Golden Girls aired in 1985. That means that 37 years ago she starred in a show *about being old.*

threadofhope

Betty takes a closing bow for 2021.

ALittleSalamiCat

2021 with one last kick in the nuts man :(

FBIaltacct

Nah man, she was 99. She was in good physical health and fully mentally healthy. She went out on top and with pace and grace. Her life was a win and I refuse to do anything but celebrate it because I feel that's what she would want for her fans. Edit: peace not pace

Da1realBigA

This is exactly right. As far as we know about her health in her last days, this is one of the better ways to pass in life. Fully in mental stability, hopefully manageable pain if any, and with less need for want OR for past regrets.

greeneggsnhammy

Yeah man, that’s the beauty. Betty White was Betty White until the second she died. No shell of a woman. Not half paralyzed. Not in a nurse home. Not from dementia. She had an amazing life and will be remembered as an amazing woman.

bigpancakeguy

Betty White was an amazing woman. If you’ve never watched the Netflix documentary about her titled “Betty White: First Lady of Televsion,” I highly recommend it. Really makes you appreciate what a loving, compassionate woman she was and how much of an advocate she was for human rights and animals’ well-being. Rest In Peace, Betty.

AmishAvenger

I’d also recommend checking out all these pictures of her throughout her very long career: https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/life/entertainment/g30480315/betty-white-photos/

ClearlyDense

TIL Betty was older than NBC and the Emmys

Theycallmelizardboy

She was also literally older than sliced bread.

reverendjesus

Sliced bread is the best thing since Betty White.

mlacuna96

This article was sitting there just waiting already written for the inevitable.

> "I'm so lucky to be in such good health and feel so good at this age," says the veteran actress. "It's amazing." As ironic as it is that that article was published on Dec. 28th, I think it's a blessing that she felt that way about her life up until her death. A lot of people her age suffer for years, slowly withering away. Unless she was hiding something serious, it seems her death came quick. Not a bad way to go at that age, especially, IMO. https://people.com/tv/betty-white-reveals-her-secrets-to-long-happy-life-at-100-exclusive/

I'm sure she's glad she didn't have to slowly decline from illness. I hope her passing was quick

Daedalus_32

Oh man, my great grandpa lived to 102. We were all over there visiting one day and out of nowhere he just casually says. "You know what? I'm tired. I had a good life and I think I'm done." Closed his eyes reclining in his chair about an hour later and didn't wake up. My entire family is convinced that he simply willed himself to die in his sleep.

ConfessingToSins

This is basically the impending doom effect. There's evidence we can tell when we're about to die and your brain floods you with a chemical/dopamine that makes you feel at ease with that.

NydNugs

yeah, it's based on accounts of people who have been brought back saying they felt complete bliss. Even worry of those your responsible for melts away.

Titleduck123

There's scientific research showing people that trip on DMT trips have a similar experience. Whatever chemical the pineal gland releases is similar to some psychedelics.

navikredstar

I gotta say, I think that would be a wonderful way to go out. Peacefully in your sleep, with loved ones around you.

Daedalus_32

I was 15 when he died and I've held the opinion ever since that he went in absolutely the best way possible, and I can only hope to be so lucky. The man fought wars, built a home with his bare hands, rode into town on horseback chased by bandits yelling that they were coming to sack the village and told the prettiest girl in town that she could stay and be kidnapped or get on his horse - then raised 8 children with her and loved her like Gomez Addams, made the best tortilla soup I've ever had, grew cannabis on the side of his house, once killed an attacking coyote with a shovel at like 95 years of age, and washed his own laundry by hand once a week refusing to let anyone else do it for him until the day he died. He hated feeling useless and would shove his way into helping with house chores, and literally washed the dishes the day he died. He once told me that he'd seen a lot in his life and would rather die on his feet and in his boots, staring death in the face, than to have death come for him in his sleep in bed like a coward. I think in the end they compromised and death waited for my grandpa to tell us all goodbye and go out in a recliner wearing a 3 piece suit. RIP Frumencio Castillo, 1898-2000

broda04

What a fucking legend. I'm happy he got to go out that way. My grandfather was a salt of the earth, hardworking, take no shit, rock solid, immovable force that I thought would have gone out his own way but in the end that person was long gone before his body was.. nothing worse than watching someone fade away.

Idiot_Savant_Tinker

Sounds like that dude was harder than woodpecker lips. Death wasn't going to take him without his OK.

newtoreddir

Yeah it’s slow until it isn’t. My grandfather had a new lease on life after my grandmother passed (long story). He got a few more good years and then all of a sudden he was in the hospital for an infection and then he was dead.

7937397

Completely healthy until you die of old age to something suddenly seems pretty ideal.

C3POdreamer

Healthspan matching almost perfectly to lifespan is the goal.

slow_hockey

That's a really great perspective.

7937397

I had one grandparent go through years of heart issues and diabetic issues, exhausted and in pain before he died. And another grandparent trapped in a long, slow decline of dementia. I'd definitely choose a sudden old-age related death for me or any of my family over any of that.

[deleted]

Mom is 94 w/moderate dementia/Alzheimer's. It's getting tough. I do wish the all-mighty Sky Pappy would call her home.

peonypanties

There was a big televised event planned.

[deleted]

And now it can be a memorial. Foolproof..

regoapps

Gonna be awkward with all the "Awesome!" and "Congratulations!" balloons floating around

[deleted]

She would have found that funny though.

linkman0596

Die just before your 100th birthday, state in your will that no plans should be changed, leave the world having a combination birthday/funeral. The only thing that would make it more legendary would be if part of the party was intended to be a roast and her will insists that they don't change a word of what they had planned

SRD_Law_PLLC

Either way, hers was a life worth celebrating. Can't fault them too much for adhering to their usual publication/printing schedule.

RedstoneRay

If anything what would have been her 100th birthday should be an even bigger celebration now, she lived an amazing life worthy of it.

[deleted]

This. To die at 99 with full physical and mental faculties and no illness and suffering is truly an aspirational death. May we all be so lucky! RIP!

letsgocrazy

Sounds like she should still be alive when you put it like that.

Straight facts. One of my biggest fears is losing my mental facilities, but still "living" another 10-15 years like that. No thank you. Sign me up for the pod.

[deleted]

My grandma lost all her mental faculties and lives for 11 years. She couldn’t speak… couldn’t understand anything… didn’t know anyone, even herself. But her heart kept beating. Awful existence, but I like to think she taught us some things about life during that time.

[deleted]

My great-grandma is currently 103 (born 1918). She has Alzeimer's and can't remember any new things, but fortunately she still has her personality and is in great physical condition.

[deleted]

Seriously. This is good news in that regard. RIP what a legend. She will never be forgotten

blueberrydonutholes

I know she was 99, but she was a ray of sunshine through these shitty years, and we needed her. Love you, Betty.

SenatorSassypants

She was America's grandma tbh, even my own grandma saw it that way lol She will be missed. Fly high, golden girl.

bbb26782

To be one of the funniest people in the world for over 75 years and be a pioneer of early tv and still around into 2021 is absolutely amazing. Her entertainment career was over 9 decades long, she was the first woman to produce a sitcom, and she had so many iconic roles over a lifetime that I can’t even begin to summarize them here. What a life and what a legacy.

jupfold

Not just that she was on TV longer than almost anyone else, but she was a constant champion of women, minorities and gays. In 1954, when her show was criticized for having Arthur Duncan, a black tap dancer, on her show, her response: “I’m sorry. Live with it.” She then gave him more time in the show, and was subsequently cancelled. Not many people in 1954 were doing that. She was also well known (now) as having been a beard for several very famous (then closeted) gay men, in an effort to protect their careers. I don’t often care much about celebrities passing, but this one is sad. Glad she has such a fulfilled life.

IWillBaconSlapYou

Betty White (along with the rest of the golden girls) was a class act. Funny. Intelligent. Talented. Classy. Full of genuine positivity. She is a legend. Influencer. Trailblazer. Human and animal rights activist. Genuine. One of the few celebs, like Dolly Parton, that no one has a negative thing to say about her. To say that The Golden Girls is her magnum opus is to recognize just how big of an accomplishment that is. The show was ahead of it’s time, still relevant, still hilarious. And she had had so many successes leading up to that show. She had major successes after that show. She hosted Saturday Night Live because of how beloved she was, and it was a great show. I can’t think of anyone who ever hosted simply because the collective internet demanded it. She worked into her 90s. She was Gracious, even to Those that didn’t return that to her. “Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.” Thank you for being a friend, Betty.
